The Builders of the Walls

1  וַיָּ֡קָם (And rose up) אֶלְיָשִׁיב֩ (Eliashib) הַכֹּהֵ֨ן (the priest) הַגָּד֜וֹל (high) וְאֶחָ֣יו (and his brothers) הַכֹּהֲנִ֗ים (the priests) וַיִּבְנוּ֙ (and they built) אֶת־ (-) שַׁ֣עַר (the Gate) הַצֹּ֔אן (of the Sheep). הֵ֣מָּה (They) קִדְּשׁ֔וּהוּ (consecrated it) וַֽיַּעֲמִ֖ידוּ (and hung) דַּלְתֹתָ֑יו (its doors), וְעַד־ (and they built as far as) מִגְדַּ֤ל (the Tower) הַמֵּאָה֙ (of the Hundred) קִדְּשׁ֔וּהוּ (and consecrated it) עַ֖ד (as far as) מִגְדַּ֥ל (the Tower) חֲנַנְאֵֽל׃ס (of Hananel). 2  וְעַל־ (And next to) יָד֥וֹ (his hand) בָנ֖וּ (built) אַנְשֵׁ֣י (the men) יְרֵח֑וֹס (of Jericho). וְעַל־ (And next to) יָד֣וֹ (their hand) בָנָ֔ה (built) זַכּ֖וּר (Zaccur) בֶּן־ (son) אִמְרִֽי׃ס (of Imri).

3  וְאֵת֙ (And) שַׁ֣עַר (the Gate) הַדָּגִ֔ים (of the Fish) בָּנ֖וּ (built) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) הַסְּנָאָ֑ה (of Hassenaah). הֵ֣מָּה (They) קֵר֔וּהוּ (laid its beams) וַֽיַּעֲמִ֙ידוּ֙ (and set up) דַּלְתֹתָ֔יו (its doors), מַנְעוּלָ֖יו (its bolts), וּבְרִיחָֽיו׃ס (and its bars). 4  וְעַל־ (And next to) יָדָ֣ם (their hand) הֶחֱזִ֗יק (strengthened it) מְרֵמ֤וֹת (Meremoth) בֶּן־ (son) אוּרִיָּה֙ (of Urijah) בֶּן־ (son) הַקּ֔וֹץס (of Hakkoz). וְעַל־ (And next to) יָדָ֣ם (their hand) הֶחֱזִ֔יק (strengthened it) מְשֻׁלָּ֥ם (Meshullam) בֶּן־ (son) בֶּרֶכְיָ֖ה (of Berechiah) בֶּן־ (son) מְשֵׁיזַבְאֵ֑לס (of Meshezabel). וְעַל־ (And next to) יָדָ֣ם (their hand) הֶֽחֱזִ֔יק (strengthened it) צָד֖וֹק (Zadok) בֶּֽן־ (son) בַּעֲנָֽא׃ס (of Baanah). 5  וְעַל־ (And next to) יָדָ֖ם (their hand) הֶחֱזִ֣יקוּ (strengthened it) הַתְּקוֹעִ֑ים (the Tekoites). וְאַדִּֽירֵיהֶם֙ (And their nobles) לֹא־ (not) הֵבִ֣יאוּ (did put) צַוָּרָ֔ם (their shoulders) בַּעֲבֹדַ֖ת (to the work) אֲדֹנֵיהֶֽם׃ס (of their Lord).

6  וְאֵת֩ (And) שַׁ֨עַר (the Gate) הַיְשָׁנָ֜ה (of Jeshanah) הֶחֱזִ֗יקוּ (was strengthened) יֽוֹיָדָע֙ (by Joiada) בֶּן־ (son) פָּסֵ֔חַ (of Paseah) וּמְשֻׁלָּ֖ם (and Meshullam) בֶּן־ (son) בְּסֽוֹדְיָ֑ה (of Besodeiah). הֵ֣מָּה (They) קֵר֔וּהוּ (laid its beams) וַֽיַּעֲמִ֙ידוּ֙ (and set up) דַּלְתֹתָ֔יו (its doors) וּמַנְעֻלָ֖יו (and its bolts) וּבְרִיחָֽיו׃ס (and bars). 7  וְעַל־ (And next to) יָדָ֨ם (their hand) הֶחֱזִ֜יק (strengthened it) מְלַטְיָ֣ה (Melatiah) הַגִּבְעֹנִ֗י (the Gibeonite) וְיָדוֹן֙ (and Jadon) הַמֵּרֹ֣נֹתִ֔י (the Meronothite), אַנְשֵׁ֥י (the men) גִבְע֖וֹן (of Gibeon) וְהַמִּצְפָּ֑ה (and of Mizpah) לְכִסֵּ֕א (of the throne) פַּחַ֖ת (of the governor) עֵ֥בֶר (beyond) הַנָּהָֽר׃ס (the River). 8  עַל־ (Next to) יָד֣וֹ (his hand) הֶחֱזִ֗יק (strengthened it) עֻזִּיאֵ֤ל (Uzziel) בֶּֽן־ (son) חַרְהֲיָה֙ (of Harhaiah) צֽוֹרְפִ֔יםס (of the refiners), וְעַל־ (and next to) יָד֣וֹ (his hand) הֶחֱזִ֔יק (strengthened it) חֲנַנְיָ֖ה (Hananiah) בֶּן־ (son) הָרַקָּחִ֑ים (of the perfumers). וַיַּֽעַזְבוּ֙ (And they fortified) יְר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם (Jerusalem) עַ֖ד (as far as) הַחוֹמָ֥ה (the Wall) הָרְחָבָֽה׃ס (Broad).

9  וְעַל־ (And next to) יָדָ֤ם (their hand) הֶחֱזִיק֙ (strengthened it) רְפָיָ֣ה (Rephaiah) בֶן־ (son) ח֔וּר (of Hur), שַׂ֕ר (leader) חֲצִ֖י (of half) פֶּ֥לֶךְ (the district) יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ס (of Jerusalem). 10  וְעַל־ (And next to) יָדָ֧ם (their hand) הֶחֱזִ֛יק (strengthened it) יְדָיָ֥ה (Jedaiah) בֶן־ (son) חֲרוּמַ֖ף (of Harumaph), וְנֶ֣גֶד (and in front) בֵּית֑וֹס (of his house). וְעַל־ (And next to) יָד֣וֹ (his hand) הֶחֱזִ֔יק (strengthened it) חַטּ֖וּשׁ (Hattush) בֶּן־ (son) חֲשַׁבְנְיָֽה׃ (of Hashabniah). 11  מִדָּ֣ה (Measure) שֵׁנִ֗ית (a second) הֶחֱזִיק֙ (strengthened) מַלְכִּיָּ֣ה (Malchijah) בֶן־ (son) חָרִ֔ם (of Harim) וְחַשּׁ֖וּב (and Hasshub) בֶּן־ (son) פַּחַ֣ת (of Pahath-) מוֹאָ֑ב (moab), וְאֵ֖ת (along with) מִגְדַּ֥ל (the Tower) הַתַּנּוּרִֽים׃ס (of the Ovens). 12  וְעַל־ (And next to) יָד֣וֹ (his hand) הֶחֱזִ֗יק (strengthened it) שַׁלּוּם֙ (Shallum) בֶּן־ (son) הַלּוֹחֵ֔שׁ (of Hallohesh), שַׂ֕ר (leader) חֲצִ֖י (of half) פֶּ֣לֶךְ (the district) יְרוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (of Jerusalem)— ה֖וּא (he) וּבְנוֹתָֽיו׃ס (and his daughters).

13  אֵת֩ (-) שַׁ֨עַר (the Gate) הַגַּ֜יְא (of the Valley) הֶחֱזִ֣יק (strengthened) חָנוּן֮ (Hanun) וְיֹשְׁבֵ֣י (and the dwellers) זָנוֹחַ֒ (of Zanoah). הֵ֣מָּה (They) בָנ֔וּהוּ (built it) וַֽיַּעֲמִ֙ידוּ֙ (and set up) דַּלְתֹתָ֔יו (its doors) מַנְעֻלָ֖יו (and its bolts) וּבְרִיחָ֑יו (and bars) וְאֶ֤לֶף (and a thousand) אַמָּה֙ (cubits) בַּחוֹמָ֔ה (of the wall) עַ֖ד (as far as) שַׁ֥עַר (the Gate) הָשֲׁפֽוֹת׃ (of the Dunghill).

14  וְאֵ֣ת׀ (And) שַׁ֣עַר (the Gate) הָאַשְׁפּ֗וֹת (of the Dunghill) הֶחֱזִיק֙ (was strengthened) מַלְכִּיָּ֣ה (by Malchijah) בֶן־ (son) רֵכָ֔ב (of Rechab), שַׂ֖ר (leader) פֶּ֣לֶךְ (of the district) בֵּית־ (of Beth-) הַכָּ֑רֶם (haccherem). ה֣וּא (He) יִבְנֶ֔נּוּ (built it) וְיַעֲמִיד֙ (and set up) דַּלְתֹתָ֔יו (its doors) מַנְעֻלָ֖יו (and its bolts) וּבְרִיחָֽיו׃ס (and bars).

15  וְאֵת֩ (And) שַׁ֨עַר (the Gate) הָעַ֜יִן (of the Fountain) הֶ֠חֱזִיק (strengthened) שַׁלּ֣וּן (Shallun) בֶּן־ (son) כָּל־ (of Col-) חֹזֶה֮ (hozeh) שַׂ֣ר (leader) פֶּ֣לֶךְ (of the district) הַמִּצְפָּה֒ (of Mizpah). ה֤וּא (He) יִבְנֶ֙נּוּ֙ (built it) וִיטַֽלְלֶ֔נּוּ (and covered it) וְיַעֲמִידוּ (and set up) דַּלְתֹתָ֔יו (its doors) מַנְעֻלָ֖יו (with its bolts) וּבְרִיחָ֑יו (and bars), וְ֠אֵת (and) חוֹמַ֞ת (the wall) בְּרֵכַ֤ת (of the Pool) הַשֶּׁ֙לַח֙ (of Shelah) לְגַן־ (by the Garden) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (of the King), וְעַד־ (and as far as) הַֽמַּעֲל֔וֹת (the stairs) הַיּוֹרְד֖וֹת (going down) מֵעִ֥יר (from the City) דָּוִֽיד׃ס (of David).

16  אַחֲרָ֤יו (After him) הֶחֱזִיק֙ (strengthened it) נְחֶמְיָ֣ה (Nehemiah) בֶן־ (son) עַזְבּ֔וּק (of Azbuk), שַׂ֕ר (leader) חֲצִ֖י (of half) פֶּ֣לֶךְ (of the district) בֵּֽית־ (of Beth-) צ֑וּר (zur), עַד־ (as far as) נֶ֙גֶד֙ (in front) קִבְרֵ֣י (of the tombs) דָוִ֔יד (of David), וְעַד־ (and to) הַבְּרֵכָה֙ (the pool) הָעֲשׂוּיָ֔ה (fashioned), וְעַ֖ד (and as far as) בֵּ֥ית (the House) הַגִּבֹּרִֽים׃ס (of the Mighty).

17  אַחֲרָ֛יו (After him) הֶחֱזִ֥יקוּ (strengthened it) הַלְוִיִּ֖ם (the Levites) רְח֣וּם (under Rehum) בֶּן־ (son) בָּנִ֑י (of Bani). עַל־ (Next to) יָד֣וֹ (his hand) הֶחֱזִ֗יק (strengthened it) חֲשַׁבְיָ֛ה (Hashabiah), שַׂר־ (leader) חֲצִי־ (of half) פֶ֥לֶךְ (of the district) קְעִילָ֖ה (of Keilah), לְפִלְכּֽוֹ׃ס (for his district). 18  אַחֲרָיו֙ (After him) הֶחֱזִ֣יקוּ (strengthened it) אֲחֵיהֶ֔ם (their brothers) בַּוַּ֖י (under Bavvai) בֶּן־ (son) חֵנָדָ֑ד (of Henadad), שַׂ֕ר (leader) חֲצִ֖י (of half) פֶּ֥לֶךְ (of the district) קְעִילָֽה׃ס (of Keilah). 19  וַיְחַזֵּ֨ק (And strengthened it) עַל־ (next to) יָד֜וֹ (his hand) עֵ֧זֶר (Ezer) בֶּן־ (son) יֵשׁ֛וּעַ (of Jeshua), שַׂ֥ר (leader) הַמִּצְפָּ֖ה (of Mizpah), מִדָּ֣ה (a measure) שֵׁנִ֑ית (second) מִנֶּ֕גֶד (opposite) עֲלֹ֥ת (the Ascent) הַנֶּ֖שֶׁק (to the Armory), הַמִּקְצֹֽעַ׃ס (at the angle).

20  אַחֲרָ֨יו (After him) הֶחֱרָ֧ה (heatedly) הֶחֱזִ֛יק (strengthened) בָּר֥וּךְ (Baruch) בֶּן־ (son) זַבַּי (Zaccai) מִדָּ֣ה (a measure) שֵׁנִ֑ית (second), מִן־ (from) הַ֨מִּקְצ֔וֹעַ (the angle) עַד־ (to) פֶּ֙תַח֙ (the door) בֵּ֣ית (of the house) אֶלְיָשִׁ֔יב (of Eliashib) הַכֹּהֵ֖ן (the priest) הַגָּדֽוֹל׃ס (high). 21  אַחֲרָ֣יו (After him) הֶחֱזִ֗יק (strengthened) מְרֵמ֧וֹת (Meremoth) בֶּן־ (son) אוּרִיָּ֛ה (of Urijah) בֶּן־ (son) הַקּ֖וֹץ (of Koz) מִדָּ֣ה (section) שֵׁנִ֑ית (a second), מִפֶּ֙תַח֙ (from the door) בֵּ֣ית (of the house) אֶלְיָשִׁ֔יב (of Eliashib) וְעַד־ (and to) תַּכְלִ֖ית (the end) בֵּ֥ית (of the house) אֶלְיָשִֽׁיב׃ס (of Eliashib). 22  וְאַחֲרָ֛יו (And after him) הֶחֱזִ֥יקוּ (strengthened it) הַכֹּהֲנִ֖ים (the priests), אַנְשֵׁ֥י (the men) הַכִּכָּֽר׃ (of the circuit).

23  אַחֲרָ֨יו (After him) הֶחֱזִ֧יק (strengthened it) בִּנְיָמִ֛ן (Benjamin) וְחַשּׁ֖וּב (and Hasshub) נֶ֣גֶד (opposite) בֵּיתָ֑םס (their house). אַחֲרָ֣יו (After them) הֶחֱזִ֗יק (strengthened it) עֲזַרְיָ֧ה (Azariah) בֶן־ (son) מַעֲשֵׂיָ֛ה (of Maaseiah) בֶּן־ (son) עֲנָֽנְיָ֖ה (of Ananiah), אֵ֥צֶל (beside) בֵּיתֽוֹ׃ס (his house). 24  אַחֲרָ֣יו (After him) הֶחֱזִ֗יק (strengthened) בִּנּ֛וּי (Binnui) בֶּן־ (son) חֵנָדָ֖ד (of Henadad) מִדָּ֣ה (a measure) שֵׁנִ֑ית (second) מִבֵּ֣ית (from the house) עֲזַרְיָ֔ה (of Azariah) עַד־ (to) הַמִּקְצ֖וֹעַ (the angle) וְעַד־ (and as far as) הַפִּנָּֽה׃ (the corner). 25  פָּלָ֣ל (Palal) בֶּן־ (son) אוּזַי֮ (of Uzai did so) מִנֶּ֣גֶד (opposite) הַמִּקְצוֹעַ֒ (the angle) וְהַמִּגְדָּ֗ל (and the tower) הַיּוֹצֵא֙ (going out) מִבֵּ֤ית (from the house) הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ (of the king) הָֽעֶלְי֔וֹן (upper) אֲשֶׁ֖ר (that was) לַחֲצַ֣ר (by the court) הַמַּטָּרָ֑ה (of the guard). אַחֲרָ֖יו (After him was) פְּדָיָ֥ה (Pedaiah) בֶן־ (son) פַּרְעֹֽשׁ׃ס (of Parosh). 26  וְהַ֨נְּתִינִ֔ים (And the Nethinim) הָי֥וּ (have been) יֹשְׁבִ֖ים (dwelling) בָּעֹ֑פֶל (in Ophel), עַ֠ד (as far as) נֶ֜גֶד (in front) שַׁ֤עַר (of the Gate) הַמַּ֙יִם֙ (Water) לַמִּזְרָ֔ח (toward the east), וְהַמִּגְדָּ֖ל (and on the tower) הַיּוֹצֵֽא׃ס (that goes out). 27  אַחֲרָ֛יו (After them) הֶחֱזִ֥יקוּ (strengthened) הַתְּקֹעִ֖ים (the Tekoites) מִדָּ֣ה (a measure) שֵׁנִ֑ית (second) מִנֶּ֜גֶד (from opposite) הַמִּגְדָּ֤ל (the tower) הַגָּדוֹל֙ (great) הַיּוֹצֵ֔א (that goes out), וְעַ֖ד (and as far as) חוֹמַ֥ת (the wall) הָעֹֽפֶל׃ (of Ophel).

28  מֵעַ֣ל׀ (From above) שַׁ֣עַר (the Gate) הַסּוּסִ֗ים (of the Horses) הֶחֱזִ֙יקוּ֙ (strengthened it) הַכֹּ֣הֲנִ֔ים (the priests), אִ֖ישׁ (each) לְנֶ֥גֶד (in front) בֵּיתֽוֹ׃ס (of his house). 29  אַחֲרָ֧יו (After them) הֶחֱזִ֛יק (strengthened it) צָד֥וֹק (Zadok) בֶּן־ (son) אִמֵּ֖ר (of Immer) נֶ֣גֶד (in front) בֵּית֑וֹס (of his house). וְאַחֲרָ֤יו (And after him) הֶחֱזִיק֙ (strengthened it) שְׁמַֽעְיָ֣ה (Shemaiah) בֶן־ (son) שְׁכַנְיָ֔ה (of Shechaniah), שֹׁמֵ֖ר (the keeper) שַׁ֥עַר (of Gate) הַמִּזְרָֽח׃ס (the East).

30  אַחֲרַי (After him) הֶחֱזִ֜יק (strengthened it) חֲנַנְיָ֣ה (Hananiah) בֶן־ (son) שֶׁלֶמְיָ֗ה (of Shelemiah) וְחָנ֧וּן (and Hanun) בֶּן־ (son) צָלָ֛ף (of Zalaph) הַשִּׁשִּׁ֖י (the sixth) מִדָּ֣ה (measure), שֵׁנִ֑יס (a second). אַחֲרָ֣יו (After him) הֶחֱזִ֗יק (strengthened it) מְשֻׁלָּם֙ (Meshullam) בֶּן־ (son) בֶּ֣רֶכְיָ֔ה (of Berechiah) נֶ֖גֶד (in front) נִשְׁכָּתֽוֹ׃ס (of his dwelling). 31  אַחֲרֵי (After him) הֶחֱזִ֗יק (strengthened it) מַלְכִּיָּה֙ (Malchijah), בֶּן־ (one) הַצֹּ֣רְפִ֔י (of the goldsmiths), עַד־ (as far as) בֵּ֥ית (the house) הַנְּתִינִ֖ים (of the Nethinim), וְהָרֹכְלִ֑ים (and of the merchants), נֶ֚גֶד (in front) שַׁ֣עַר (of the Gate) הַמִּפְקָ֔ד (of the Inspection), וְעַ֖ד (and as far as) עֲלִיַּ֥ת (the upper room) הַפִּנָּֽה׃ (on the corner). 32  וּבֵ֨ין (And between) עֲלִיַּ֤ת (the upper room) הַפִּנָּה֙ (on the corner), לְשַׁ֣עַר (as far as the Gate) הַצֹּ֔אן (of the Sheep), הֶחֱזִ֥יקוּ (strengthened it) הַצֹּרְפִ֖ים (the goldsmiths) וְהָרֹכְלִֽים׃פ (and the merchants).
