Israel received Canaan as the Lord’s gift, fulfilling the covenant He made with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Their possession of the land rested on God’s faithfulness, not on their own labor or merit.

The conquest brought Israel into fortified towns, homes, and established settlements prepared before their arrival. God provided the conditions needed for the tribes to dwell securely in the land.

Verse 13. - Labour. The word here used is expressive of the fatigue of labour, and is more equivalent to our word toil. The whole passage is suggested by Deuteronomy 6:10.

Joshua 24:13 magnifies the sheer grace of God: He fought, built, and planted so His people could rest, dwell, and feast. The verse calls us to gratitude, humility, and obedient loyalty, echoing through both Testaments that every good thing—earthly or eternal—comes from the Lord’s hand, not our own striving.
