And as soon as it was morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council. And they bound Jesus and led him away and delivered him over to Pilate.1Early in the morning, the chief priests, elders, scribes, and the whole Sanhedrin devised a plan. They bound Jesus, led Him away, and handed Him over to Pilate.
And Pilate asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, “You have said so.”2So Pilate questioned Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” “You have said so,” Jesus replied.
And the chief priests accused him of many things.3And the chief priests began to accuse Him of many things.
And Pilate again asked him, “Have you no answer to make? See how many charges they bring against you.”4Then Pilate questioned Him again, “Have You no answer? Look how many charges they are bringing against You!”
But Jesus made no further answer, so that Pilate was amazed.5But to Pilate’s amazement, Jesus made no further reply.
Now at the feast he used to release for them one prisoner for whom they asked.6Now it was Pilate’s custom at the feast to release to the people a prisoner of their choosing.
And among the rebels in prison, who had committed murder in the insurrection, there was a man called Barabbas.7And a man named Barabbas was imprisoned with the rebels who had committed murder during the insurrection.
And the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do as he usually did for them.8So the crowd went up and began asking Pilate to keep his custom.
And he answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?”9“Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?” Pilate asked.
For he perceived that it was out of envy that the chief priests had delivered him up.10For he knew it was out of envy that the chief priests had handed Jesus over.
But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release for them Barabbas instead.11But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas to them instead.
And Pilate again said to them, “Then what shall I do with the man you call the King of the Jews?”12So Pilate asked them again, “What then do you want me to do with the One you call the King of the Jews?”
And they cried out again, “Crucify him.”13And they shouted back, “Crucify Him!”
And Pilate said to them, “Why? What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him.”14“Why?” asked Pilate. “What evil has He done?” But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify Him!”
So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.15And wishing to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed Him over to be crucified.
And the soldiers led him away inside the palace (that is, the governor’s headquarters), and they called together the whole battalion.16Then the soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium) and called the whole company together.
And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him.17They dressed Him in a purple robe, twisted together a crown of thorns, and set it on His head.
And they began to salute him, “Hail, King of the Jews!”18And they began to salute Him: “Hail, King of the Jews!”
And they were striking his head with a reed and spitting on him and kneeling down in homage to him.19They kept striking His head with a staff and spitting on Him. And they knelt down and bowed before Him.
And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they led him out to crucify him.20After they had mocked Him, they removed the purple robe and put His own clothes back on Him. Then they led Him out to crucify Him.
And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross.21Now Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and the soldiers forced him to carry the cross of Jesus.
And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull).22They brought Jesus to a place called Golgotha, which means The Place of the Skull.
And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it.23There they offered Him wine mixed with myrrh, but He did not take it.
And they crucified him and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take.24And they crucified Him. They also divided His garments by casting lots to decide what each of them would take.
And it was the third hour when they crucified him.25It was the third hour when they crucified Him.
And the inscription of the charge against him read, “The King of the Jews.”26And the charge inscribed against Him read: THE KING OF THE JEWS.
And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left.27Along with Jesus, they crucified two robbers, one on His right and one on His left.

And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,29And those who passed by heaped abuse on Him, shaking their heads and saying, “Aha! You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,
save yourself, and come down from the cross!”30come down from the cross and save Yourself!”
So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, “He saved others; he cannot save himself.31In the same way, the chief priests and scribes mocked Him among themselves, saying, “He saved others, but He cannot save Himself!
Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may see and believe.” Those who were crucified with him also reviled him.32Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe!” And even those who were crucified with Him berated Him.
And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.33From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land.
And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”34At the ninth hour, Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”
And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.”35When some of those standing nearby heard this, they said, “Behold, He is calling Elijah.”
And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.”36And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine. He put it on a reed and held it up for Jesus to drink, saying, “Leave Him alone. Let us see if Elijah comes to take Him down.”
And Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed his last.37But Jesus let out a loud cry and breathed His last.
And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.38And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.
And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”39When the centurion standing there in front of Jesus saw how He had breathed His last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”
There were also women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome.40And there were also women watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome.
When he was in Galilee, they followed him and ministered to him, and there were also many other women who came up with him to Jerusalem.41These women had followed Jesus and ministered to Him while He was in Galilee, and there were many other women who had come up to Jerusalem with Him.
And when evening had come, since it was the day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath,42Now it was already evening. Since it was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath),
Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.43Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent Council member who himself was waiting for the kingdom of God, boldly went to Pilate to ask for the body of Jesus.
Pilate was surprised to hear that he should have already died. And summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he was already dead.44Pilate was surprised to hear that Jesus was already dead, so he summoned the centurion to ask if this was so.
And when he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he granted the corpse to Joseph.45When Pilate had confirmed it with the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph.
And Joseph bought a linen shroud, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen shroud and laid him in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock. And he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.46So Joseph bought a linen cloth, took down the body of Jesus, wrapped it in the cloth, and placed it in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance to the tomb.
Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid.47Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph saw where His body was placed.
