| 1If a man marries a woman and she does not please him because he has found something offensive in her, then he may draw up a divorce document, give it to her, and evict her from his house. | 1“Suppose a man marries a woman but she does not please him. Having discovered something wrong with her, he writes a document of divorce, hands it to her, and sends her away from his house. |
| 2When she has left him she may go and become someone else's wife. | 2When she leaves his house, she is free to marry another man. |
| 3If the second husband rejects her and then divorces her, gives her the papers, and evicts her from his house, or if the second husband who married her dies, | 3But if the second husband also turns against her, writes a document of divorce, hands it to her, and sends her away, or if he dies, |
| 4her first husband who divorced her is not permitted to remarry her after she has become ritually impure, for that is offensive to the LORD. You must not bring guilt on the land which the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance. | 4the first husband may not marry her again, for she has been defiled. That would be detestable to the LORD. You must not bring guilt upon the land the LORD your God is giving you as a special possession. |
| 5When a man is newly married, he need not go into the army nor be obligated in any way; he must be free to stay at home for a full year and bring joy to the wife he has married. | 5“A newly married man must not be drafted into the army or be given any other official responsibilities. He must be free to spend one year at home, bringing happiness to the wife he has married. |
| 6One must not take either lower or upper millstones as security on a loan, for that is like taking a life itself as security. | 6“It is wrong to take a set of millstones, or even just the upper millstone, as security for a loan, for the owner uses it to make a living. |
| 7If a man is found kidnapping a person from among his fellow Israelites, and regards him as mere property and sells him, that kidnapper must die. In this way you will purge evil from among you. | 7“If anyone kidnaps a fellow Israelite and treats him as a slave or sells him, the kidnapper must die. In this way, you will purge the evil from among you. |
| 8Be careful during an outbreak of leprosy to follow precisely all that the Levitical priests instruct you; as I have commanded them, so you should do. | 8“In all cases involving serious skin diseases, be careful to follow the instructions of the Levitical priests; obey all the commands I have given them. |
| 9Remember what the LORD your God did to Miriam along the way after you left Egypt. | 9Remember what the LORD your God did to Miriam as you were coming from Egypt. |
| 10When you make any kind of loan to your neighbor, you may not go into his house to claim what he is offering as security. | 10“If you lend anything to your neighbor, do not enter his house to pick up the item he is giving as security. |
| 11You must stand outside and the person to whom you are making the loan will bring out to you what he is offering as security. | 11You must wait outside while he goes in and brings it out to you. |
| 12If the person is poor you may not use what he gives you as security for a covering. | 12If your neighbor is poor and gives you his cloak as security for a loan, do not keep the cloak overnight. |
| 13You must by all means return to him at sunset the item he gave you as security so that he may sleep in his outer garment and bless you for it; it will be considered a just deed by the LORD your God. | 13Return the cloak to its owner by sunset so he can stay warm through the night and bless you, and the LORD your God will count you as righteous. |
| 14You must not oppress a lowly and poor servant, whether one from among your fellow Israelites or from the resident foreigners who are living in your land and villages. | 14“Never take advantage of poor and destitute laborers, whether they are fellow Israelites or foreigners living in your towns. |
| 15You must pay his wage that very day before the sun sets, for he is poor and his life depends on it. Otherwise he will cry out to the LORD against you, and you will be guilty of sin. | 15You must pay them their wages each day before sunset because they are poor and are counting on it. If you don’t, they might cry out to the LORD against you, and it would be counted against you as sin. |
| 16Fathers must not be put to death for what their children do, nor children for what their fathers do; each must be put to death for his own sin. | 16“Parents must not be put to death for the sins of their children, nor children for the sins of their parents. Those deserving to die must be put to death for their own crimes. |
| 17You must not pervert justice due a resident foreigner or an orphan, or take a widow's garment as security for a loan. | 17“True justice must be given to foreigners living among you and to orphans, and you must never accept a widow’s garment as security for her debt. |
| 18Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the LORD your God redeemed you from there; therefore I am commanding you to do all this. | 18Always remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the LORD your God redeemed you from your slavery. That is why I have given you this command. |
| 19Whenever you reap your harvest in your field and leave some unraked grain there, you must not return to get it; it should go to the resident foreigner, orphan, and widow so that the LORD your God may bless all the work you do. | 19“When you are harvesting your crops and forget to bring in a bundle of grain from your field, don’t go back to get it. Leave it for the foreigners, orphans, and widows. Then the LORD your God will bless you in all you do. |
| 20When you beat your olive tree you must not repeat the procedure; the remaining olives belong to the resident foreigner, orphan, and widow. | 20When you beat the olives from your olive trees, don’t go over the boughs twice. Leave the remaining olives for the foreigners, orphans, and widows. |
| 21When you gather the grapes of your vineyard you must not do so a second time; they should go to the resident foreigner, orphan, and widow. | 21When you gather the grapes in your vineyard, don’t glean the vines after they are picked. Leave the remaining grapes for the foreigners, orphans, and widows. |
| 22Remember that you were slaves in the land of Egypt; therefore, I am commanding you to do all this. | 22Remember that you were slaves in the land of Egypt. That is why I am giving you this command. |
