Psalm 89
NET Parallel NLT [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
NET BibleNew Living Translation
A well-written song by Ethan the Ezrachite. I will sing continually about the LORD's faithful deeds; to future generations I will proclaim your faithfulness. 1I will sing of the LORD’s unfailing love forever! Young and old will hear of your faithfulness.
For I say, "Loyal love is permanently established; in the skies you set up your faithfulness." 2Your unfailing love will last forever. Your faithfulness is as enduring as the heavens.
The LORD said, "I have made a covenant with my chosen one; I have made a promise on oath to David, my servant: 3The LORD said, “I have made a covenant with David, my chosen servant. I have sworn this oath to him:
I will give you an eternal dynasty and establish your throne throughout future generations.'" (Selah) 4‘I will establish your descendants as kings forever; they will sit on your throne from now until eternity.’” Interlude
O LORD, the heavens praise your amazing deeds, as well as your faithfulness in the angelic assembly. 5All heaven will praise your great wonders, LORD; myriads of angels will praise you for your faithfulness.
For who in the skies can compare to the LORD? Who is like the LORD among the heavenly beings, 6For who in all of heaven can compare with the LORD? What mightiest angel is anything like the LORD?
a God who is honored in the great angelic assembly, and more awesome than all who surround him? 7The highest angelic powers stand in awe of God. He is far more awesome than all who surround his throne.
O LORD, sovereign God! Who is strong like you, O LORD? Your faithfulness surrounds you. 8O LORD God of Heaven’s Armies! Where is there anyone as mighty as you, O LORD? You are entirely faithful.
You rule over the proud sea. When its waves surge, you calm them. 9You rule the oceans. You subdue their storm-tossed waves.
You crushed the Proud One and killed it; with your strong arm you scattered your enemies. 10You crushed the great sea monster. You scattered your enemies with your mighty arm.
The heavens belong to you, as does the earth. You made the world and all it contains. 11The heavens are yours, and the earth is yours; everything in the world is yours—you created it all.
You created the north and the south. Tabor and Hermon rejoice in your name. 12You created north and south. Mount Tabor and Mount Hermon praise your name.
Your arm is powerful, your hand strong, your right hand victorious. 13Powerful is your arm! Strong is your hand! Your right hand is lifted high in glorious strength.
Equity and justice are the foundation of your throne. Loyal love and faithfulness characterize your rule. 14Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne. Unfailing love and truth walk before you as attendants.
How blessed are the people who worship you! O LORD, they experience your favor. 15Happy are those who hear the joyful call to worship, for they will walk in the light of your presence, LORD.
They rejoice in your name all day long, and are vindicated by your justice. 16They rejoice all day long in your wonderful reputation. They exult in your righteousness.
For you give them splendor and strength. By your favor we are victorious. 17You are their glorious strength. It pleases you to make us strong.
For our shield belongs to the LORD, our king to the Holy One of Israel. 18Yes, our protection comes from the LORD, and he, the Holy One of Israel, has given us our king.
Then you spoke through a vision to your faithful followers and said: "I have energized a warrior; I have raised up a young man from the people. 19Long ago you spoke in a vision to your faithful people. You said, “I have raised up a warrior. I have selected him from the common people to be king.
I have discovered David, my servant. With my holy oil I have anointed him as king. 20I have found my servant David. I have anointed him with my holy oil.
My hand will support him, and my arm will strengthen him. 21I will steady him with my hand; with my powerful arm I will make him strong.
No enemy will be able to exact tribute from him; a violent oppressor will not be able to humiliate him. 22His enemies will not defeat him, nor will the wicked overpower him.
I will crush his enemies before him; I will strike down those who hate him. 23I will beat down his adversaries before him and destroy those who hate him.
He will experience my faithfulness and loyal love, and by my name he will win victories. 24My faithfulness and unfailing love will be with him, and by my authority he will grow in power.
I will place his hand over the sea, his right hand over the rivers. 25I will extend his rule over the sea, his dominion over the rivers.
He will call out to me, 'You are my father, my God, and the protector who delivers me.' 26And he will call out to me, ‘You are my Father, my God, and the Rock of my salvation.’
I will appoint him to be my firstborn son, the most exalted of the earth's kings. 27I will make him my firstborn son, the mightiest king on earth.
I will always extend my loyal love to him, and my covenant with him is secure. 28I will love him and be kind to him forever; my covenant with him will never end.
I will give him an eternal dynasty, and make his throne as enduring as the skies above. 29I will preserve an heir for him; his throne will be as endless as the days of heaven.
If his sons reject my law and disobey my regulations, 30But if his descendants forsake my instructions and fail to obey my regulations,
if they break my rules and do not keep my commandments, 31if they do not obey my decrees and fail to keep my commands,
I will punish their rebellion by beating them with a club, their sin by inflicting them with bruises. 32then I will punish their sin with the rod, and their disobedience with beating.
But I will not remove my loyal love from him, nor be unfaithful to my promise. 33But I will never stop loving him nor fail to keep my promise to him.
I will not break my covenant or go back on what I promised. 34No, I will not break my covenant; I will not take back a single word I said.
Once and for all I have vowed by my own holiness, I will never deceive David. 35I have sworn an oath to David, and in my holiness I cannot lie:
His dynasty will last forever. His throne will endure before me, like the sun, 36His dynasty will go on forever; his kingdom will endure as the sun.
it will remain stable, like the moon, his throne will endure like the skies." (Selah) 37It will be as eternal as the moon, my faithful witness in the sky!” Interlude
But you have spurned and rejected him; you are angry with your chosen king. 38But now you have rejected him and cast him off. You are angry with your anointed king.
You have repudiated your covenant with your servant; you have thrown his crown to the ground. 39You have renounced your covenant with him; you have thrown his crown in the dust.
You have broken down all his walls; you have made his strongholds a heap of ruins. 40You have broken down the walls protecting him and ruined every fort defending him.
All who pass by have robbed him; he has become an object of disdain to his neighbors. 41Everyone who comes along has robbed him, and he has become a joke to his neighbors.
You have allowed his adversaries to be victorious, and all his enemies to rejoice. 42You have strengthened his enemies and made them all rejoice.
You turn back his sword from the adversary, and have not sustained him in battle. 43You have made his sword useless and refused to help him in battle.
You have brought to an end his splendor, and have knocked his throne to the ground. 44You have ended his splendor and overturned his throne.
You have cut short his youth, and have covered him with shame. (Selah) 45You have made him old before his time and publicly disgraced him. Interlude
How long, O LORD, will this last? Will you remain hidden forever? Will your anger continue to burn like fire? 46O LORD, how long will this go on? Will you hide yourself forever? How long will your anger burn like fire?
Take note of my brief lifespan! Why do you make all people so mortal? 47Remember how short my life is, how empty and futile this human existence!
No man can live on without experiencing death, or deliver his life from the power of Sheol. (Selah) 48No one can live forever; all will die. No one can escape the power of the grave. Interlude
Where are your earlier faithful deeds, O Lord, the ones performed in accordance with your reliable oath to David? 49Lord, where is your unfailing love? You promised it to David with a faithful pledge.
Take note, O Lord, of the way your servants are taunted, and of how I must bear so many insults from people! 50Consider, Lord, how your servants are disgraced! I carry in my heart the insults of so many people.
Your enemies, O LORD, hurl insults; they insult your chosen king as they dog his footsteps. 51Your enemies have mocked me, O LORD; they mock your anointed king wherever he goes.
The LORD deserves praise forevermore! We agree! We agree! 52Praise the LORD forever! Amen and amen!
