Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.1Ἔλεγεν δὲ παραβολὴν αὐτοῖς πρὸς τὸ δεῖν πάντοτε προσεύχεσθαι αὐτοὺς καὶ μὴ ἐνκακεῖν
He said: "In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared what people thought.2λέγων Κριτής τις ἦν ἔν τινι πόλει τὸν Θεὸν μὴ φοβούμενος καὶ ἄνθρωπον μὴ ἐντρεπόμενος
And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, 'Grant me justice against my adversary.'3χήρα δὲ ἦν ἐν τῇ πόλει ἐκείνῃ καὶ ἤρχετο πρὸς αὐτὸν λέγουσα Ἐκδίκησόν με ἀπὸ τοῦ ἀντιδίκου μου
"For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, 'Even though I don't fear God or care what people think,4Καὶ οὐκ ἤθελεν ἐπὶ χρόνον μετὰ ταῦτα δὲ εἶπεν ἐν ἑαυτῷ Εἰ καὶ τὸν Θεὸν οὐ φοβοῦμαι οὐδὲ ἄνθρωπον ἐντρέπομαι
yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won't eventually come and attack me!'"5διά γε τὸ παρέχειν μοι κόπον τὴν χήραν ταύτην ἐκδικήσω αὐτήν ἵνα μὴ εἰς τέλος ἐρχομένη ὑπωπιάζῃ με
And the Lord said, "Listen to what the unjust judge says.6Εἶπεν δὲ Κύριος Ἀκούσατε τί κριτὴς τῆς ἀδικίας λέγει
And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off?7 δὲ Θεὸς οὐ μὴ ποιήσῃ τὴν ἐκδίκησιν τῶν ἐκλεκτῶν αὐτοῦ τῶν βοώντων αὐτῷ ἡμέρας καὶ νυκτός καὶ μακροθυμεῖ ἐπ’ αὐτοῖς
I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?"8λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι ποιήσει τὴν ἐκδίκησιν αὐτῶν ἐν τάχει πλὴν Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐλθὼν ἆρα εὑρήσει τὴν πίστιν ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς
To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable:9Εἶπεν δὲ καὶ πρός τινας τοὺς πεποιθότας ἐφ’ ἑαυτοῖς ὅτι εἰσὶν δίκαιοι καὶ ἐξουθενοῦντας τοὺς λοιποὺς τὴν παραβολὴν ταύτην
"Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.10Ἄνθρωποι δύο ἀνέβησαν εἰς τὸ ἱερὸν προσεύξασθαι εἷς Φαρισαῖος καὶ ἕτερος τελώνης
The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: 'God, I thank you that I am not like other people--robbers, evildoers, adulterers--or even like this tax collector.11 Φαρισαῖος σταθεὶς ταῦτα «πρὸς ἑαυτὸν» προσηύχετο Θεός εὐχαριστῶ σοι ὅτι οὐκ εἰμὶ ὥσπερ οἱ λοιποὶ τῶν ἀνθρώπων ἅρπαγες ἄδικοι μοιχοί καὶ ὡς οὗτος τελώνης
I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.'12νηστεύω δὶς τοῦ σαββάτου ἀποδεκατῶ πάντα ὅσα κτῶμαι
"But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, 'God, have mercy on me, a sinner.'13 δὲ τελώνης μακρόθεν ἑστὼς οὐκ ἤθελεν οὐδὲ τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς ἐπᾶραι εἰς τὸν οὐρανόν ἀλλ’ ἔτυπτεν τὸ στῆθος αὐτοῦ λέγων Θεός ἱλάσθητί μοι τῷ ἁμαρτωλῷ
"I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted."14λέγω ὑμῖν κατέβη οὗτος δεδικαιωμένος εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ παρ’ ἐκεῖνον ὅτι πᾶς ὑψῶν ἑαυτὸν ταπεινωθήσεται δὲ ταπεινῶν ἑαυτὸν ὑψωθήσεται
People were also bringing babies to Jesus for him to place his hands on them. When the disciples saw this, they rebuked them.15Προσέφερον δὲ αὐτῷ καὶ τὰ βρέφη ἵνα αὐτῶν ἅπτηται ἰδόντες δὲ οἱ μαθηταὶ ἐπετίμων αὐτοῖς
But Jesus called the children to him and said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.16 δὲ Ἰησοῦς προσεκαλέσατο αὐτὰ λέγων Ἄφετε τὰ παιδία ἔρχεσθαι πρός με καὶ μὴ κωλύετε αὐτά τῶν γὰρ τοιούτων ἐστὶν βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ
Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it."17ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὃς ἂν μὴ δέξηται τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ Θεοῦ ὡς παιδίον οὐ μὴ εἰσέλθῃ εἰς αὐτήν
A certain ruler asked him, "Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?"18Καὶ ἐπηρώτησέν τις αὐτὸν ἄρχων λέγων Διδάσκαλε ἀγαθέ τί ποιήσας ζωὴν αἰώνιον κληρονομήσω
"Why do you call me good?" Jesus answered. "No one is good--except God alone.19Εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς Τί με λέγεις ἀγαθόν οὐδεὶς ἀγαθὸς εἰ μὴ εἷς Θεός
You know the commandments: 'You shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.'"20τὰς ἐντολὰς οἶδας Μὴ μοιχεύσῃς Μὴ φονεύσῃς Μὴ κλέψῃς Μὴ ψευδομαρτυρήσῃς Τίμα τὸν πατέρα σου καὶ τὴν μητέρα
"All these I have kept since I was a boy," he said.21 δὲ εἶπεν Ταῦτα πάντα ἐφύλαξα ἐκ νεότητος ‹μου›
When Jesus heard this, he said to him, "You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."22Ἀκούσας δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἔτι ἕν σοι λείπει πάντα ὅσα ἔχεις πώλησον καὶ διάδος πτωχοῖς καὶ ἕξεις θησαυρὸν ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς καὶ δεῦρο ἀκολούθει μοι
When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was very wealthy.23 δὲ ἀκούσας ταῦτα περίλυπος ἐγενήθη ἦν γὰρ πλούσιος σφόδρα
Jesus looked at him and said, "How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!24Ἰδὼν δὲ αὐτὸν Ἰησοῦς [περίλυπον γενόμενον] εἶπεν Πῶς δυσκόλως οἱ τὰ χρήματα ἔχοντες εἰς τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ Θεοῦ εἰσπορεύονται
Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God."25εὐκοπώτερον γάρ ἐστιν κάμηλον διὰ τρήματος βελόνης εἰσελθεῖν πλούσιον εἰς τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ Θεοῦ εἰσελθεῖν
Those who heard this asked, "Who then can be saved?"26Εἶπαν δὲ οἱ ἀκούσαντες Καὶ τίς δύναται σωθῆναι
Jesus replied, "What is impossible with man is possible with God."27 δὲ εἶπεν Τὰ ἀδύνατα παρὰ ἀνθρώποις δυνατὰ παρὰ τῷ Θεῷ ἐστιν
Peter said to him, "We have left all we had to follow you!"28Εἶπεν δὲ Πέτρος Ἰδοὺ ἡμεῖς ἀφέντες τὰ ἴδια ἠκολουθήσαμέν σοι
"Truly I tell you," Jesus said to them, "no one who has left home or wife or brothers or sisters or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God29 δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι οὐδείς ἐστιν ὃς ἀφῆκεν οἰκίαν γυναῖκα ἀδελφοὺς γονεῖς τέκνα ἕνεκεν τῆς βασιλείας τοῦ Θεοῦ
will fail to receive many times as much in this age, and in the age to come eternal life."30ὃς οὐχὶ μὴ ἀπολάβῃ* πολλαπλασίονα ἐν τῷ καιρῷ τούτῳ καὶ ἐν τῷ αἰῶνι τῷ ἐρχομένῳ ζωὴν αἰώνιον
Jesus took the Twelve aside and told them, "We are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written by the prophets about the Son of Man will be fulfilled.31Παραλαβὼν δὲ τοὺς δώδεκα εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Ἰδοὺ ἀναβαίνομεν εἰς Ἰερουσαλήμ καὶ τελεσθήσεται πάντα τὰ γεγραμμένα διὰ τῶν προφητῶν τῷ Υἱῷ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου
He will be delivered over to the Gentiles. They will mock him, insult him and spit on him;32παραδοθήσεται γὰρ τοῖς ἔθνεσιν καὶ ἐμπαιχθήσεται καὶ ὑβρισθήσεται καὶ ἐμπτυσθήσεται
they will flog him and kill him. On the third day he will rise again."33καὶ μαστιγώσαντες ἀποκτενοῦσιν αὐτόν καὶ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ τρίτῃ ἀναστήσεται
The disciples did not understand any of this. Its meaning was hidden from them, and they did not know what he was talking about.34Καὶ αὐτοὶ οὐδὲν τούτων συνῆκαν καὶ ἦν τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο κεκρυμμένον ἀπ’ αὐτῶν καὶ οὐκ ἐγίνωσκον τὰ λεγόμενα
As Jesus approached Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging.35Ἐγένετο δὲ ἐν τῷ ἐγγίζειν αὐτὸν εἰς Ἰεριχὼ τυφλός τις ἐκάθητο παρὰ τὴν ὁδὸν ἐπαιτῶν
When he heard the crowd going by, he asked what was happening.36ἀκούσας δὲ ὄχλου διαπορευομένου ἐπυνθάνετο τί εἴη τοῦτο
They told him, "Jesus of Nazareth is passing by."37Ἀπήγγειλαν δὲ αὐτῷ ὅτι Ἰησοῦς Ναζωραῖος παρέρχεται
He called out, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!"38Καὶ ἐβόησεν λέγων Ἰησοῦ υἱὲ Δαυίδ ἐλέησόν με
Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, "Son of David, have mercy on me!"39Καὶ οἱ προάγοντες ἐπετίμων αὐτῷ ἵνα σιγήσῃ αὐτὸς δὲ πολλῷ μᾶλλον ἔκραζεν Υἱὲ Δαυίδ ἐλέησόν με
Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him. When he came near, Jesus asked him,40Σταθεὶς δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἐκέλευσεν αὐτὸν ἀχθῆναι πρὸς αὐτόν ἐγγίσαντος δὲ αὐτοῦ ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτόν
"What do you want me to do for you?" "Lord, I want to see," he replied.41Τί σοι θέλεις ποιήσω δὲ εἶπεν Κύριε ἵνα ἀναβλέψω
Jesus said to him, "Receive your sight; your faith has healed you."42Καὶ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἀνάβλεψον πίστις σου σέσωκέν σε
Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus, praising God. When all the people saw it, they also praised God.43καὶ παραχρῆμα ἀνέβλεψεν καὶ ἠκολούθει αὐτῷ δοξάζων τὸν Θεόν καὶ πᾶς λαὸς ἰδὼν ἔδωκεν αἶνον τῷ Θεῷ
