One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and his disciples began to pick some heads of grain, rub them in their hands and eat the kernels.1Ἐγένετο δὲ ἐν σαββάτῳ διαπορεύεσθαι αὐτὸν διὰ σπορίμων καὶ ἔτιλλον οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἤσθιον τοὺς στάχυας ψώχοντες ταῖς χερσίν
Some of the Pharisees asked, "Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?"2τινὲς δὲ τῶν Φαρισαίων εἶπαν Τί ποιεῖτε οὐκ ἔξεστιν τοῖς σάββασιν
Jesus answered them, "Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?3Καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς πρὸς αὐτοὺς εἶπεν Ἰησοῦς Οὐδὲ τοῦτο ἀνέγνωτε ἐποίησεν Δαυὶδ ὁπότε ἐπείνασεν αὐτὸς καὶ οἱ μετ’ αὐτοῦ ὄντες
He entered the house of God, and taking the consecrated bread, he ate what is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions."4ὡς εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὸν οἶκον τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ τοὺς ἄρτους τῆς προθέσεως λαβὼν ἔφαγεν καὶ ἔδωκεν τοῖς μετ’ αὐτοῦ οὓς οὐκ ἔξεστιν φαγεῖν εἰ μὴ μόνους τοὺς ἱερεῖς
Then Jesus said to them, "The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath."5καὶ ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς Κύριός ἐστιν τοῦ σαββάτου Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου
On another Sabbath he went into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was shriveled.6Ἐγένετο δὲ ἐν ἑτέρῳ σαββάτῳ εἰσελθεῖν αὐτὸν εἰς τὴν συναγωγὴν καὶ διδάσκειν καὶ ἦν ἄνθρωπος ἐκεῖ καὶ χεὶρ αὐτοῦ δεξιὰ ἦν ξηρά
The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath.7παρετηροῦντο δὲ αὐτὸν οἱ γραμματεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι εἰ ἐν τῷ σαββάτῳ θεραπεύει ἵνα εὕρωσιν κατηγορεῖν αὐτοῦ
But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said to the man with the shriveled hand, "Get up and stand in front of everyone." So he got up and stood there.8Αὐτὸς δὲ ᾔδει τοὺς διαλογισμοὺς αὐτῶν εἶπεν δὲ τῷ ἀνδρὶ τῷ ξηρὰν ἔχοντι τὴν χεῖρα Ἔγειρε καὶ στῆθι εἰς τὸ μέσον καὶ ἀναστὰς ἔστη
Then Jesus said to them, "I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?"9εἶπεν δὲ Ἰησοῦς πρὸς αὐτούς Ἐπερωτῶ ὑμᾶς εἰ ἔξεστιν τῷ σαββάτῳ ἀγαθοποιῆσαι κακοποιῆσαι ψυχὴν σῶσαι ἀπολέσαι
He looked around at them all, and then said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He did so, and his hand was completely restored.10Καὶ περιβλεψάμενος πάντας αὐτοὺς εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἔκτεινον τὴν χεῖρά σου δὲ ἐποίησεν καὶ ἀπεκατεστάθη χεὶρ αὐτοῦ
But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law were furious and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus.11αὐτοὶ δὲ ἐπλήσθησαν ἀνοίας καὶ διελάλουν πρὸς ἀλλήλους τί ἂν ποιήσαιεν τῷ Ἰησοῦ
One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God.12Ἐγένετο δὲ ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ταύταις ἐξελθεῖν αὐτὸν εἰς τὸ ὄρος προσεύξασθαι καὶ ἦν διανυκτερεύων ἐν τῇ προσευχῇ τοῦ Θεοῦ
When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles:13καὶ ὅτε ἐγένετο ἡμέρα προσεφώνησεν τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐκλεξάμενος ἀπ’ αὐτῶν δώδεκα οὓς καὶ ἀποστόλους ὠνόμασεν
Simon (whom he named Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew,14Σίμωνα ὃν καὶ ὠνόμασεν Πέτρον καὶ Ἀνδρέαν τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ Ἰάκωβον καὶ Ἰωάννην καὶ Φίλιππον καὶ Βαρθολομαῖον
Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot,15καὶ Μαθθαῖον καὶ Θωμᾶν καὶ Ἰάκωβον Ἁλφαίου καὶ Σίμωνα τὸν καλούμενον Ζηλωτὴν
Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.16καὶ Ἰούδαν Ἰακώβου καὶ Ἰούδαν Ἰσκαριὼθ ὃς ἐγένετο προδότης
He went down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of his disciples was there and a great number of people from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the coastal region around Tyre and Sidon,17Καὶ καταβὰς μετ’ αὐτῶν ἔστη ἐπὶ τόπου πεδινοῦ καὶ ὄχλος πολὺς μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ καὶ πλῆθος πολὺ τοῦ λαοῦ ἀπὸ πάσης τῆς Ἰουδαίας καὶ Ἰερουσαλὴμ καὶ τῆς παραλίου Τύρου καὶ Σιδῶνος
who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. Those troubled by impure spirits were cured,18οἳ ἦλθον ἀκοῦσαι αὐτοῦ καὶ ἰαθῆναι ἀπὸ τῶν νόσων αὐτῶν καὶ οἱ ἐνοχλούμενοι ἀπὸ πνευμάτων ἀκαθάρτων ἐθεραπεύοντο
and the people all tried to touch him, because power was coming from him and healing them all.19καὶ πᾶς ὄχλος ἐζήτουν ἅπτεσθαι αὐτοῦ ὅτι δύναμις παρ’ αὐτοῦ ἐξήρχετο καὶ ἰᾶτο πάντας
Looking at his disciples, he said: "Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.20Καὶ αὐτὸς ἐπάρας τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς αὐτοῦ εἰς τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ ἔλεγεν Μακάριοι οἱ πτωχοί Ὅτι ὑμετέρα ἐστὶν βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ
Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.21Μακάριοι οἱ πεινῶντες νῦν Ὅτι χορτασθήσεσθε Μακάριοι οἱ κλαίοντες νῦν Ὅτι γελάσετε
Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.22Μακάριοί ἐστε ὅταν μισήσωσιν ὑμᾶς οἱ ἄνθρωποι καὶ ὅταν ἀφορίσωσιν ὑμᾶς καὶ ὀνειδίσωσιν καὶ ἐκβάλωσιν τὸ ὄνομα ὑμῶν ὡς πονηρὸν ἕνεκα τοῦ Υἱοῦ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου
"Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their ancestors treated the prophets.23χάρητε ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ καὶ σκιρτήσατε ἰδοὺ γὰρ μισθὸς ὑμῶν πολὺς ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ κατὰ τὰ αὐτὰ γὰρ ἐποίουν τοῖς προφήταις οἱ πατέρες αὐτῶν
"But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort.24Πλὴν οὐαὶ ὑμῖν τοῖς πλουσίοις Ὅτι ἀπέχετε τὴν παράκλησιν ὑμῶν
Woe to you who are well fed now, for you will go hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep.25Οὐαὶ ὑμῖν οἱ ἐμπεπλησμένοι νῦν Ὅτι πεινάσετε Οὐαί οἱ γελῶντες νῦν Ὅτι πενθήσετε καὶ κλαύσετε
Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you, for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets.26Οὐαὶ ὅταν καλῶς ὑμᾶς εἴπωσιν πάντες οἱ ἄνθρωποι Κατὰ τὰ αὐτὰ γὰρ ἐποίουν τοῖς ψευδοπροφήταις οἱ πατέρες αὐτῶν
"But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,27Ἀλλὰ ὑμῖν λέγω τοῖς ἀκούουσιν Ἀγαπᾶτε τοὺς ἐχθροὺς ὑμῶν καλῶς ποιεῖτε τοῖς μισοῦσιν ὑμᾶς
bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.28εὐλογεῖτε τοὺς καταρωμένους ὑμᾶς προσεύχεσθε περὶ τῶν ἐπηρεαζόντων ὑμᾶς
If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them.29τῷ τύπτοντί σε ἐπὶ τὴν σιαγόνα πάρεχε καὶ τὴν ἄλλην καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ αἴροντός σου τὸ ἱμάτιον καὶ τὸν χιτῶνα μὴ κωλύσῃς
Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back.30παντὶ αἰτοῦντί σε δίδου καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ αἴροντος τὰ σὰ μὴ ἀπαίτει
Do to others as you would have them do to you.31καὶ καθὼς θέλετε ἵνα ποιῶσιν ὑμῖν οἱ ἄνθρωποι ποιεῖτε αὐτοῖς ὁμοίως
"If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them.32Καὶ εἰ ἀγαπᾶτε τοὺς ἀγαπῶντας ὑμᾶς ποία ὑμῖν χάρις ἐστίν καὶ γὰρ οἱ ἁμαρτωλοὶ τοὺς ἀγαπῶντας αὐτοὺς ἀγαπῶσιν
And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that.33καὶ γὰρ ἐὰν ἀγαθοποιῆτε τοὺς ἀγαθοποιοῦντας ὑμᾶς ποία ὑμῖν χάρις ἐστίν καὶ οἱ ἁμαρτωλοὶ τὸ αὐτὸ ποιοῦσιν
And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full.34καὶ ἐὰν δανίσητε παρ’ ὧν ἐλπίζετε λαβεῖν ποία ὑμῖν χάρις ἐστίν καὶ ἁμαρτωλοὶ ἁμαρτωλοῖς δανίζουσιν ἵνα ἀπολάβωσιν τὰ ἴσα
But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.35Πλὴν ἀγαπᾶτε τοὺς ἐχθροὺς ὑμῶν καὶ ἀγαθοποιεῖτε καὶ δανίζετε μηδὲν ἀπελπίζοντες καὶ ἔσται μισθὸς ὑμῶν πολύς καὶ ἔσεσθε υἱοὶ Ὑψίστου ὅτι αὐτὸς χρηστός ἐστιν ἐπὶ τοὺς ἀχαρίστους καὶ πονηρούς
Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.36Γίνεσθε οἰκτίρμονες καθὼς [καὶ] Πατὴρ ὑμῶν οἰκτίρμων ἐστίν
"Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.37Καὶ μὴ κρίνετε καὶ οὐ μὴ κριθῆτε καὶ μὴ καταδικάζετε καὶ οὐ μὴ καταδικασθῆτε ἀπολύετε καὶ ἀπολυθήσεσθε
Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you."38δίδοτε καὶ δοθήσεται ὑμῖν μέτρον καλὸν πεπιεσμένον σεσαλευμένον ὑπερεκχυννόμενον δώσουσιν εἰς τὸν κόλπον ὑμῶν γὰρ μέτρῳ μετρεῖτε ἀντιμετρηθήσεται ὑμῖν
He also told them this parable: "Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into a pit?39Εἶπεν δὲ καὶ παραβολὴν αὐτοῖς Μήτι δύναται τυφλὸς τυφλὸν ὁδηγεῖν οὐχὶ ἀμφότεροι εἰς βόθυνον ἐμπεσοῦνται
The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher.40οὐκ ἔστιν μαθητὴς ὑπὲρ τὸν διδάσκαλον κατηρτισμένος δὲ πᾶς ἔσται ὡς διδάσκαλος αὐτοῦ
"Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?41Τί δὲ βλέπεις τὸ κάρφος τὸ ἐν τῷ ὀφθαλμῷ τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ σου τὴν δὲ δοκὸν τὴν ἐν τῷ ἰδίῳ ὀφθαλμῷ οὐ κατανοεῖς
How can you say to your brother, 'Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,' when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.42πῶς δύνασαι λέγειν τῷ ἀδελφῷ σου Ἀδελφέ ἄφες ἐκβάλω τὸ κάρφος τὸ ἐν τῷ ὀφθαλμῷ σου αὐτὸς τὴν ἐν τῷ ὀφθαλμῷ σοῦ δοκὸν οὐ βλέπων ὑποκριτά ἔκβαλε πρῶτον τὴν δοκὸν ἐκ τοῦ ὀφθαλμοῦ σοῦ καὶ τότε διαβλέψεις τὸ κάρφος τὸ ἐν τῷ ὀφθαλμῷ τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ σου ἐκβαλεῖν
"No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.43Οὐ γάρ ἐστιν δένδρον καλὸν ποιοῦν καρπὸν σαπρόν οὐδὲ πάλιν δένδρον σαπρὸν ποιοῦν καρπὸν καλόν
Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers.44ἕκαστον γὰρ δένδρον ἐκ τοῦ ἰδίου καρποῦ γινώσκεται οὐ γὰρ ἐξ ἀκανθῶν συλλέγουσιν σῦκα οὐδὲ ἐκ βάτου σταφυλὴν τρυγῶσιν
A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.45 ἀγαθὸς ἄνθρωπος ἐκ τοῦ ἀγαθοῦ θησαυροῦ τῆς καρδίας ‹αὐτοῦ› προφέρει τὸ ἀγαθόν καὶ πονηρὸς ἐκ τοῦ πονηροῦ προφέρει τὸ πονηρόν ἐκ γὰρ περισσεύματος καρδίας λαλεῖ τὸ στόμα αὐτοῦ
"Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?46Τί δέ με καλεῖτε Κύριε κύριε καὶ οὐ ποιεῖτε λέγω
As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like.47Πᾶς ἐρχόμενος πρός με καὶ ἀκούων μου τῶν λόγων καὶ ποιῶν αὐτούς ὑποδείξω ὑμῖν τίνι ἐστὶν ὅμοιος
They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.48ὅμοιός ἐστιν ἀνθρώπῳ οἰκοδομοῦντι οἰκίαν ὃς ἔσκαψεν καὶ ἐβάθυνεν καὶ ἔθηκεν θεμέλιον ἐπὶ τὴν πέτραν πλημμύρης δὲ γενομένης προσέρηξεν ποταμὸς τῇ οἰκίᾳ ἐκείνῃ καὶ οὐκ ἴσχυσεν σαλεῦσαι αὐτὴν διὰ τὸ καλῶς οἰκοδομῆσθαι αὐτήν
But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete."49 δὲ ἀκούσας καὶ μὴ ποιήσας ὅμοιός ἐστιν ἀνθρώπῳ οἰκοδομήσαντι οἰκίαν ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν χωρὶς θεμελίου προσέρηξεν ποταμός καὶ εὐθὺς συνέπεσεν καὶ ἐγένετο τὸ ῥῆγμα τῆς οἰκίας ἐκείνης μέγα
