A Contemplation of Ethan the Ezrahite. I will sing of the mercies of the LORD forever; With my mouth will I make known Your faithfulness to all generations.1A Maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite. I will sing of the loving devotion of the LORD forever; with my mouth I will proclaim Your faithfulness to all generations.
For I have said, “Mercy shall be built up forever; Your faithfulness You shall establish in the very heavens.”2For I have said, “Loving devotion is built up forever; in the heavens You establish Your faithfulness.”
“I have made a covenant with My chosen, I have sworn to My servant David:3You said, “I have made a covenant with My chosen one, I have sworn to David My servant:
‘Your seed I will establish forever, And build up your throne to all generations.’ ” Selah4‘I will establish your offspring forever and build up your throne for all generations.’ ” Selah
And the heavens will praise Your wonders, O LORD; Your faithfulness also in the assembly of the saints.5The heavens praise Your wonders, O LORD—Your faithfulness as well—in the assembly of the holy ones.
For who in the heavens can be compared to the LORD? Who among the sons of the mighty can be likened to the LORD?6For who in the skies can compare with the LORD? Who among the heavenly beings is like the LORD?
God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, And to be held in reverence by all those around Him.7In the council of the holy ones, God is greatly feared, and awesome above all who surround Him.
O LORD God of hosts, Who is mighty like You, O LORD? Your faithfulness also surrounds You.8O LORD God of Hosts, who is like You? O mighty LORD, Your faithfulness surrounds You.
You rule the raging of the sea; When its waves rise, You still them.9You rule the raging sea; when its waves mount up, You still them.
You have broken Rahab in pieces, as one who is slain; You have scattered Your enemies with Your mighty arm.10You crushed Rahab like a carcass; You scattered Your enemies with Your mighty arm.
The heavens are Yours, the earth also is Yours; The world and all its fullness, You have founded them.11The heavens are Yours, and also the earth. The earth and its fullness You founded.
The north and the south, You have created them; Tabor and Hermon rejoice in Your name.12North and south You created; Tabor and Hermon shout for joy at Your name.
You have a mighty arm; Strong is Your hand, and high is Your right hand.13Mighty is Your arm; strong is Your hand. Your right hand is exalted.
Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; Mercy and truth go before Your face.14Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; loving devotion and faithfulness go before You.
Blessed are the people who know the joyful sound! They walk, O LORD, in the light of Your countenance.15Blessed are those who know the joyful sound, who walk, O LORD, in the light of Your presence.
In Your name they rejoice all day long, And in Your righteousness they are exalted.16They rejoice in Your name all day long, and in Your righteousness they exult.
For You are the glory of their strength, And in Your favor our horn is exalted.17For You are the glory of their strength, and by Your favor our horn is exalted.
For our shield belongs to the LORD, And our king to the Holy One of Israel.18Surely our shield belongs to the LORD, and our king to the Holy One of Israel.
Then You spoke in a vision to Your holy one, And said: “I have given help to one who is mighty; I have exalted one chosen from the people.19You once spoke in a vision; to Your godly ones You said, “I have bestowed help on a warrior; I have exalted one chosen from the people.
I have found My servant David; With My holy oil I have anointed him,20I have found My servant David; with My sacred oil I have anointed him.
With whom My hand shall be established; Also My arm shall strengthen him.21My hand will sustain him; surely My arm will strengthen him.
The enemy shall not outwit him, Nor the son of wickedness afflict him.22No enemy will exact tribute; no wicked man will oppress him.
I will beat down his foes before his face, And plague those who hate him.23I will crush his foes before him and strike down those who hate him.
“But My faithfulness and My mercy shall be with him, And in My name his horn shall be exalted.24My faithfulness and loving devotion will be with him, and through My name his horn will be exalted.
Also I will set his hand over the sea, And his right hand over the rivers.25I will set his hand over the sea, and his right hand upon the rivers.
He shall cry to Me, ‘You are my Father, My God, and the rock of my salvation.’26He will call to Me, ‘You are my Father, my God, the Rock of my salvation.’
Also I will make him My firstborn, The highest of the kings of the earth.27I will indeed appoint him as My firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth.
My mercy I will keep for him forever, And My covenant shall stand firm with him.28I will forever preserve My loving devotion for him, and My covenant with him will stand fast.
His seed also I will make to endure forever, And his throne as the days of heaven.29I will establish his line forever, his throne as long as the heavens endure.
“If his sons forsake My law And do not walk in My judgments,30If his sons forsake My law and do not walk in My judgments,
If they break My statutes And do not keep My commandments,31if they violate My statutes and fail to keep My commandments,
Then I will punish their transgression with the rod, And their iniquity with stripes.32I will attend to their transgression with the rod, and to their iniquity with stripes.
Nevertheless My lovingkindness I will not utterly take from him, Nor allow My faithfulness to fail.33But I will not withdraw My loving devotion from him, nor ever betray My faithfulness.
My covenant I will not break, Nor alter the word that has gone out of My lips.34I will not violate My covenant or alter the utterance of My lips.
Once I have sworn by My holiness; I will not lie to David:35Once and for all I have sworn by My holiness—I will not lie to David—
His seed shall endure forever, And his throne as the sun before Me;36his offspring shall endure forever, and his throne before Me like the sun,
It shall be established forever like the moon, Even like the faithful witness in the sky.” Selah37like the moon, established forever, a faithful witness in the sky.” Selah
But You have cast off and abhorred, You have been furious with Your anointed.38Now, however, You have spurned and rejected him; You are enraged by Your anointed one.
You have renounced the covenant of Your servant; You have profaned his crown by casting it to the ground.39You have renounced the covenant with Your servant and sullied his crown in the dust.
You have broken down all his hedges; You have brought his strongholds to ruin.40You have broken down all his walls; You have reduced his strongholds to rubble.
All who pass by the way plunder him; He is a reproach to his neighbors.41All who pass by plunder him; he has become a reproach to his neighbors.
You have exalted the right hand of his adversaries; You have made all his enemies rejoice.42You have exalted the right hand of his foes; You have made all his enemies rejoice.
You have also turned back the edge of his sword, And have not sustained him in the battle.43You have bent the edge of his sword and have not sustained him in battle.
You have made his glory cease, And cast his throne down to the ground.44You have ended his splendor and cast his throne to the ground.
The days of his youth You have shortened; You have covered him with shame. Selah45You have cut short the days of his youth; You have covered him with shame. Selah
How long, LORD? Will You hide Yourself forever? Will Your wrath burn like fire?46How long, O LORD? Will You hide Yourself forever? Will Your wrath keep burning like fire?
Remember how short my time is; For what futility have You created all the children of men?47Remember the briefness of my lifespan! For what futility You have created all men!
What man can live and not see death? Can he deliver his life from the power of the grave? Selah48What man can live and never see death? Can he deliver his soul from the power of Sheol? Selah
Lord, where are Your former lovingkindnesses, Which You swore to David in Your truth?49Where, O Lord, is Your loving devotion of old, which You faithfully swore to David?
Remember, Lord, the reproach of Your servants— How I bear in my bosom the reproach of all the many peoples,50Remember, O Lord, the reproach of Your servants, which I bear in my heart from so many people—
With which Your enemies have reproached, O LORD, With which they have reproached the footsteps of Your anointed.51how Your enemies have taunted, O LORD, and have mocked every step of Your anointed one!
Blessed be the LORD forevermore! Amen and Amen.52Blessed be the LORD forever! Amen and amen.
