Then David spoke to the LORD the words of this song, on the day when the LORD had delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul.1David spoke the words of this song to the LORD on the day the LORD rescued him from the grasp of all his enemies and from the grasp of Saul.
And he said: “The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer;2He said: The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer,
The God of my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, My stronghold and my refuge; My Savior, You save me from violence.3my God, my rock where I seek refuge. My shield, the horn of my salvation, my stronghold, my refuge, and my Savior, you save me from violence.
I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised; So shall I be saved from my enemies.4I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I was saved from my enemies.
“When the waves of death surrounded me, The floods of ungodliness made me afraid.5For the waves of death engulfed me; the torrents of destruction terrified me.
The sorrows of Sheol surrounded me; The snares of death confronted me.6The ropes of Sheol entangled me; the snares of death confronted me.
In my distress I called upon the LORD, And cried out to my God; He heard my voice from His temple, And my cry entered His ears.7I called to the LORD in my distress; I called to my God. From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry for help reached his ears.
“Then the earth shook and trembled; The foundations of heaven quaked and were shaken, Because He was angry.8Then the earth shook and quaked; the foundations of the heavens trembled; they shook because he burned with anger.
Smoke went up from His nostrils, And devouring fire from His mouth; Coals were kindled by it.9Smoke rose from his nostrils, and consuming fire came from his mouth; coals were set ablaze by it.
He bowed the heavens also, and came down With darkness under His feet.10He bent the heavens and came down, total darkness beneath his feet.
He rode upon a cherub, and flew; And He was seen upon the wings of the wind.11He rode on a cherub and flew, soaring on the wings of the wind.
He made darkness canopies around Him, Dark waters and thick clouds of the skies.12He made darkness a canopy around him, a gathering of water and thick clouds.
From the brightness before Him Coals of fire were kindled.13From the radiance of his presence, blazing coals were ignited.
“The LORD thundered from heaven, And the Most High uttered His voice.14The LORD thundered from heaven; the Most High made his voice heard.
He sent out arrows and scattered them; Lightning bolts, and He vanquished them.15He shot arrows and scattered them; he hurled lightning bolts and routed them.
Then the channels of the sea were seen, The foundations of the world were uncovered, At the rebuke of the LORD, At the blast of the breath of His nostrils.16The depths of the sea became visible, the foundations of the world were exposed at the rebuke of the LORD, at the blast of the breath of his nostrils.
“He sent from above, He took me, He drew me out of many waters.17He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he pulled me out of deep water.
He delivered me from my strong enemy, From those who hated me; For they were too strong for me.18He rescued me from my powerful enemy and from those who hated me, for they were too strong for me.
They confronted me in the day of my calamity, But the LORD was my support.19They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but the LORD was my support.
He also brought me out into a broad place; He delivered me because He delighted in me.20He brought me out to a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me.
“The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness; According to the cleanness of my hands He has recompensed me.21The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness; he repaid me according to the cleanness of my hands.
For I have kept the ways of the LORD, And have not wickedly departed from my God.22For I have kept the ways of the LORD and have not turned from my God to wickedness.
For all His judgments were before me; And as for His statutes, I did not depart from them.23Indeed, I let all his ordinances guide me and have not disregarded his statutes.
I was also blameless before Him, And I kept myself from my iniquity.24I was blameless before him and kept myself from my iniquity.
Therefore the LORD has recompensed me according to my righteousness, According to my cleanness in His eyes.25So the LORD repaid me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness in his sight.
“With the merciful You will show Yourself merciful; With a blameless man You will show Yourself blameless;26With the faithful you prove yourself faithful, with the blameless you prove yourself blameless,
With the pure You will show Yourself pure; And with the devious You will show Yourself shrewd.27with the pure you prove yourself pure; but with the crooked you prove yourself shrewd.
You will save the humble people; But Your eyes are on the haughty, that You may bring them down.28You rescue an oppressed people, but your eyes are set against the proud--you humble them.
“For You are my lamp, O LORD; The LORD shall enlighten my darkness.29LORD, you are my lamp; the LORD illuminates my darkness.
For by You I can run against a troop; By my God I can leap over a wall.30With you I can attack a barricade, and with my God I can leap over a wall.
As for God, His way is perfect; The word of the LORD is proven; He is a shield to all who trust in Him.31God--his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is pure. He is a shield to all who take refuge in him.
“For who is God, except the LORD? And who is a rock, except our God?32For who is God besides the LORD? And who is a rock? Only our God.
God is my strength and power, And He makes my way perfect.33God is my strong refuge; he makes my way perfect.
He makes my feet like the feet of deer, And sets me on my high places.34He makes my feet like the feet of a deer and sets me securely on the heights.
He teaches my hands to make war, So that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.35He trains my hands for war; my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
“You have also given me the shield of Your salvation; Your gentleness has made me great.36You have given me the shield of your salvation; your help exalts me.
You enlarged my path under me; So my feet did not slip.37You make a spacious place beneath me for my steps, and my ankles do not give way.
“I have pursued my enemies and destroyed them; Neither did I turn back again till they were destroyed.38I pursue my enemies and destroy them; I do not turn back until they are wiped out.
And I have destroyed them and wounded them, So that they could not rise; They have fallen under my feet.39I wipe them out and crush them, and they do not rise; they fall beneath my feet.
For You have armed me with strength for the battle; You have subdued under me those who rose against me.40You have clothed me with strength for battle; you subdue my adversaries beneath me.
You have also given me the necks of my enemies, So that I destroyed those who hated me.41You have made my enemies retreat before me; I annihilate those who hate me.
They looked, but there was none to save; Even to the LORD, but He did not answer them.42They look, but there is no one to save them--they look to the LORD, but he does not answer them.
Then I beat them as fine as the dust of the earth; I trod them like dirt in the streets, And I spread them out.43I pulverize them like dust of the earth; I crush them and trample them like mud in the streets.
“You have also delivered me from the strivings of my people; You have kept me as the head of the nations. A people I have not known shall serve me.44You have freed me from the feuds among my people; you have preserved me as head of nations; a people I had not known serve me.
The foreigners submit to me; As soon as they hear, they obey me.45Foreigners submit to me cringing; as soon as they hear, they obey me.
The foreigners fade away, And come frightened from their hideouts.46Foreigners lose heart and come trembling from their fortifications.
“The LORD lives! Blessed be my Rock! Let God be exalted, The Rock of my salvation!47The LORD lives--blessed be my rock! God, the rock of my salvation, is exalted.
It is God who avenges me, And subdues the peoples under me;48God--he grants me vengeance and casts down peoples under me.
He delivers me from my enemies. You also lift me up above those who rise against me; You have delivered me from the violent man.49He frees me from my enemies. You exalt me above my adversaries; you rescue me from violent men.
Therefore I will give thanks to You, O LORD, among the Gentiles, And sing praises to Your name.50Therefore I will give thanks to you among the nations, LORD; I will sing praises about your name.
He is the tower of salvation to His king, And shows mercy to His anointed, To David and his descendants forevermore.”51He is a tower of salvation for his king; he shows loyalty to his anointed, to David and his descendants forever.
