Then David spoke to the LORD the words of this song, on the day when the LORD had delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul.1David sang to the LORD the words of this song when the LORD rescued him from the power of all his enemies, including Saul.
And he said: “The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer;2He said: "The LORD is my high ridge, my stronghold, my deliverer.
The God of my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, My stronghold and my refuge; My Savior, You save me from violence.3My God is my rocky summit where I take shelter, my shield, the horn that saves me, my stronghold, my refuge, my savior. You save me from violence!
I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised; So shall I be saved from my enemies.4I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I was delivered from my enemies.
“When the waves of death surrounded me, The floods of ungodliness made me afraid.5The waves of death engulfed me; the currents of chaos overwhelmed me.
The sorrows of Sheol surrounded me; The snares of death confronted me.6The ropes of Sheol tightened around me; the snares of death trapped me.
In my distress I called upon the LORD, And cried out to my God; He heard my voice from His temple, And my cry entered His ears.7In my distress I called to the LORD; I called to my God. From his heavenly temple he heard my voice; he listened to my cry for help.
“Then the earth shook and trembled; The foundations of heaven quaked and were shaken, Because He was angry.8The earth heaved and shook; the foundations of the sky trembled. They heaved because he was angry.
Smoke went up from His nostrils, And devouring fire from His mouth; Coals were kindled by it.9Smoke ascended from his nose; fire devoured as it came from his mouth; he hurled down fiery coals.
He bowed the heavens also, and came down With darkness under His feet.10He made the sky sink as he descended; a thick cloud was under his feet.
He rode upon a cherub, and flew; And He was seen upon the wings of the wind.11He mounted a winged angel and flew; he glided on the wings of the wind.
He made darkness canopies around Him, Dark waters and thick clouds of the skies.12He shrouded himself in darkness, in thick rain clouds.
From the brightness before Him Coals of fire were kindled.13From the brightness in front of him came coals of fire.
“The LORD thundered from heaven, And the Most High uttered His voice.14The LORD thundered from the sky; the sovereign One shouted loudly.
He sent out arrows and scattered them; Lightning bolts, and He vanquished them.15He shot arrows and scattered them, lightning and routed them.
Then the channels of the sea were seen, The foundations of the world were uncovered, At the rebuke of the LORD, At the blast of the breath of His nostrils.16The depths of the sea were exposed; the inner regions of the world were uncovered by the LORD's battle cry, by the powerful breath from his nose.
“He sent from above, He took me, He drew me out of many waters.17He reached down from above and grabbed me; he pulled me from the surging water.
He delivered me from my strong enemy, From those who hated me; For they were too strong for me.18He rescued me from my strong enemy, from those who hate me, for they were too strong for me.
They confronted me in the day of my calamity, But the LORD was my support.19They confronted me in my day of calamity, but the LORD helped me.
He also brought me out into a broad place; He delivered me because He delighted in me.20He brought me out into a wide open place; he delivered me because he was pleased with me.
“The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness; According to the cleanness of my hands He has recompensed me.21The LORD repaid me for my godly deeds; he rewarded my blameless behavior.
For I have kept the ways of the LORD, And have not wickedly departed from my God.22For I have obeyed the LORD's commands; I have not rebelled against my God.
For all His judgments were before me; And as for His statutes, I did not depart from them.23For I am aware of all his regulations, and I do not reject his rules.
I was also blameless before Him, And I kept myself from my iniquity.24I was blameless before him; I kept myself from sinning.
Therefore the LORD has recompensed me according to my righteousness, According to my cleanness in His eyes.25The LORD rewarded me for my godly deeds; he took notice of my blameless behavior.
“With the merciful You will show Yourself merciful; With a blameless man You will show Yourself blameless;26You prove to be loyal to one who is faithful; you prove to be trustworthy to one who is innocent.
With the pure You will show Yourself pure; And with the devious You will show Yourself shrewd.27You prove to be reliable to one who is blameless, but you prove to be deceptive to one who is perverse.
You will save the humble people; But Your eyes are on the haughty, that You may bring them down.28You deliver oppressed people, but you watch the proud and bring them down.
“For You are my lamp, O LORD; The LORD shall enlighten my darkness.29Indeed, you are my lamp, LORD. The LORD illumines the darkness around me.
For by You I can run against a troop; By my God I can leap over a wall.30Indeed,with your help I can charge against an army; by my God's power I can jump over a wall.
As for God, His way is perfect; The word of the LORD is proven; He is a shield to all who trust in Him.31The one true God acts in a faithful manner; the LORD's promise is reliable; he is a shield to all who take shelter in him.
“For who is God, except the LORD? And who is a rock, except our God?32Indeed, who is God besides the LORD? Who is a protector besides our God?
God is my strength and power, And He makes my way perfect.33The one true God is my mighty refuge; he removes the obstacles in my way.
He makes my feet like the feet of deer, And sets me on my high places.34He gives me the agility of a deer; he enables me to negotiate the rugged terrain.
He teaches my hands to make war, So that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.35He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend even the strongest bow.
“You have also given me the shield of Your salvation; Your gentleness has made me great.36You give me your protective shield; your willingness to help enables me to prevail.
You enlarged my path under me; So my feet did not slip.37You widen my path; my feet do not slip.
“I have pursued my enemies and destroyed them; Neither did I turn back again till they were destroyed.38I chase my enemies and destroy them; I do not turn back until I wipe them out.
And I have destroyed them and wounded them, So that they could not rise; They have fallen under my feet.39I wipe them out and beat them to death; they cannot get up; they fall at my feet.
For You have armed me with strength for the battle; You have subdued under me those who rose against me.40You give me strength for battle; you make my foes kneel before me.
You have also given me the necks of my enemies, So that I destroyed those who hated me.41You make my enemies retreat; I destroy those who hate me.
They looked, but there was none to save; Even to the LORD, but He did not answer them.42They cry out, but there is no one to help them; they cry out to the LORD, but he does not answer them.
Then I beat them as fine as the dust of the earth; I trod them like dirt in the streets, And I spread them out.43I grind them as fine as the dust of the ground; I crush them and stomp on them like clay in the streets.
“You have also delivered me from the strivings of my people; You have kept me as the head of the nations. A people I have not known shall serve me.44You rescue me from a hostile army; you preserve me as a leader of nations; people over whom I had no authority are now my subjects.
The foreigners submit to me; As soon as they hear, they obey me.45Foreigners are powerless before me; when they hear of my exploits, they submit to me.
The foreigners fade away, And come frightened from their hideouts.46Foreigners lose their courage; they shake with fear as they leave their strongholds.
“The LORD lives! Blessed be my Rock! Let God be exalted, The Rock of my salvation!47The LORD is alive! My protector is praiseworthy! The God who delivers me is exalted as king!
It is God who avenges me, And subdues the peoples under me;48The one true God completely vindicates me; he makes nations submit to me.
He delivers me from my enemies. You also lift me up above those who rise against me; You have delivered me from the violent man.49He delivers me from my enemies; you snatch me away from those who attack me; you rescue me from violent men.
Therefore I will give thanks to You, O LORD, among the Gentiles, And sing praises to Your name.50So I will give you thanks, O LORD, before the nations! I will sing praises to you.
He is the tower of salvation to His king, And shows mercy to His anointed, To David and his descendants forevermore.”51He gives his chosen king magnificent victories; he is faithful to his chosen ruler, to David and to his descendants forever!"
