And He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury,1Ἀναβλέψας δὲ εἶδεν τοὺς βάλλοντας εἰς τὸ γαζοφυλάκιον τὰ δῶρα αὐτῶν πλουσίους
and He saw also a certain poor widow putting in two mites.2εἶδεν δέ τινα χήραν πενιχρὰν βάλλουσαν ἐκεῖ λεπτὰ δύο
So He said, “Truly I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all;3Καὶ εἶπεν Ἀληθῶς λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι χήρα αὕτη «ἡ πτωχὴ» πλεῖον πάντων ἔβαλεν
for all these out of their abundance have put in offerings for God, but she out of her poverty put in all the livelihood that she had.”4πάντες γὰρ οὗτοι ἐκ τοῦ περισσεύοντος αὐτοῖς ἔβαλον εἰς τὰ δῶρα αὕτη δὲ ἐκ τοῦ ὑστερήματος αὐτῆς πάντα τὸν βίον ὃν εἶχεν ἔβαλεν
Then, as some spoke of the temple, how it was adorned with beautiful stones and donations, He said,5Καί τινων λεγόντων περὶ τοῦ ἱεροῦ ὅτι λίθοις καλοῖς καὶ ἀναθήμασιν κεκόσμηται εἶπεν
“These things which you see—the days will come in which not one stone shall be left upon another that shall not be thrown down.”6Ταῦτα θεωρεῖτε ἐλεύσονται ἡμέραι ἐν αἷς οὐκ ἀφεθήσεται λίθος ἐπὶ λίθῳ (ὧδε) ὃς οὐ καταλυθήσεται
So they asked Him, saying, “Teacher, but when will these things be? And what sign will there be when these things are about to take place?”7Ἐπηρώτησαν δὲ αὐτὸν λέγοντες Διδάσκαλε πότε οὖν ταῦτα ἔσται καὶ τί τὸ σημεῖον ὅταν μέλλῃ ταῦτα γίνεσθαι
And He said: “Take heed that you not be deceived. For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He,’ and, ‘The time has drawn near.’ Therefore do not go after them.8 δὲ εἶπεν Βλέπετε μὴ πλανηθῆτε πολλοὶ γὰρ ἐλεύσονται ἐπὶ τῷ ὀνόματί μου λέγοντες Ἐγώ εἰμι καί καιρὸς ἤγγικεν μὴ πορευθῆτε ὀπίσω αὐτῶν
But when you hear of wars and commotions, do not be terrified; for these things must come to pass first, but the end will not come immediately.”9ὅταν δὲ ἀκούσητε πολέμους καὶ ἀκαταστασίας μὴ πτοηθῆτε δεῖ γὰρ ταῦτα γενέσθαι πρῶτον ἀλλ’ οὐκ εὐθέως τὸ τέλος
Then He said to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.10Τότε ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς Ἐγερθήσεται ἔθνος ἐπ’ ἔθνος καὶ βασιλεία ἐπὶ βασιλείαν
And there will be great earthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences; and there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven.11σεισμοί τε μεγάλοι καὶ κατὰ τόπους λιμοὶ* καὶ λοιμοὶ* ἔσονται φόβητρά τε καὶ «ἀπ’ οὐρανοῦ» σημεῖα μεγάλα ἔσται
But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons. You will be brought before kings and rulers for My name’s sake.12Πρὸ δὲ τούτων πάντων ἐπιβαλοῦσιν ἐφ’ ὑμᾶς τὰς χεῖρας αὐτῶν καὶ διώξουσιν παραδιδόντες εἰς τὰς συναγωγὰς καὶ φυλακάς ἀπαγομένους ἐπὶ βασιλεῖς καὶ ἡγεμόνας ἕνεκεν τοῦ ὀνόματός μου
But it will turn out for you as an occasion for testimony.13ἀποβήσεται ὑμῖν εἰς μαρτύριον
Therefore settle it in your hearts not to meditate beforehand on what you will answer;14θέτε οὖν ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν μὴ προμελετᾶν ἀπολογηθῆναι
for I will give you a mouth and wisdom which all your adversaries will not be able to contradict or resist.15ἐγὼ γὰρ δώσω ὑμῖν στόμα καὶ σοφίαν οὐ δυνήσονται ἀντιστῆναι ἀντειπεῖν ἅπαντες οἱ ἀντικείμενοι ὑμῖν
You will be betrayed even by parents and brothers, relatives and friends; and they will put some of you to death.16Παραδοθήσεσθε δὲ καὶ ὑπὸ γονέων καὶ ἀδελφῶν καὶ συγγενῶν καὶ φίλων καὶ θανατώσουσιν ἐξ ὑμῶν
And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake.17καὶ ἔσεσθε μισούμενοι ὑπὸ πάντων διὰ τὸ ὄνομά μου
But not a hair of your head shall be lost.18καὶ θρὶξ ἐκ τῆς κεφαλῆς ὑμῶν οὐ μὴ ἀπόληται
By your patience possess your souls.19ἐν τῇ ὑπομονῇ ὑμῶν κτήσασθε* τὰς ψυχὰς ὑμῶν
“But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation is near.20Ὅταν δὲ ἴδητε κυκλουμένην ὑπὸ στρατοπέδων Ἰερουσαλήμ τότε γνῶτε ὅτι ἤγγικεν ἐρήμωσις αὐτῆς
Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those who are in the midst of her depart, and let not those who are in the country enter her.21τότε οἱ ἐν τῇ Ἰουδαίᾳ φευγέτωσαν εἰς τὰ ὄρη καὶ οἱ ἐν μέσῳ αὐτῆς ἐκχωρείτωσαν καὶ οἱ ἐν ταῖς χώραις μὴ εἰσερχέσθωσαν εἰς αὐτήν
For these are the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled.22ὅτι ἡμέραι ἐκδικήσεως αὗταί εἰσιν τοῦ πλησθῆναι πάντα τὰ γεγραμμένα
But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! For there will be great distress in the land and wrath upon this people.23Οὐαὶ ταῖς ἐν γαστρὶ ἐχούσαις καὶ ταῖς θηλαζούσαις ἐν ἐκείναις ταῖς ἡμέραις ἔσται γὰρ ἀνάγκη μεγάλη ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς καὶ ὀργὴ τῷ λαῷ τούτῳ
And they will fall by the edge of the sword, and be led away captive into all nations. And Jerusalem will be trampled by Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.24καὶ πεσοῦνται στόματι μαχαίρης καὶ αἰχμαλωτισθήσονται εἰς τὰ ἔθνη πάντα καὶ Ἰερουσαλὴμ ἔσται πατουμένη ὑπὸ ἐθνῶν ἄχρι οὗ πληρωθῶσιν (καὶ ἔσονται) καιροὶ ἐθνῶν
“And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring;25Καὶ ἔσονται σημεῖα ἐν ἡλίῳ καὶ σελήνῃ καὶ ἄστροις καὶ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς συνοχὴ ἐθνῶν ἐν ἀπορίᾳ ἤχους θαλάσσης καὶ σάλου
men’s hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.26ἀποψυχόντων ἀνθρώπων ἀπὸ φόβου καὶ προσδοκίας τῶν ἐπερχομένων τῇ οἰκουμένῃ αἱ γὰρ δυνάμεις τῶν οὐρανῶν σαλευθήσονται
Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.27καὶ τότε ὄψονται τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐρχόμενον ἐν νεφέλῃ μετὰ δυνάμεως καὶ δόξης πολλῆς
Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.”28ἀρχομένων δὲ τούτων γίνεσθαι ἀνακύψατε καὶ ἐπάρατε τὰς κεφαλὰς ὑμῶν διότι ἐγγίζει ἀπολύτρωσις ὑμῶν
Then He spoke to them a parable: “Look at the fig tree, and all the trees.29Καὶ εἶπεν παραβολὴν αὐτοῖς Ἴδετε τὴν συκῆν καὶ πάντα τὰ δένδρα
When they are already budding, you see and know for yourselves that summer is now near.30ὅταν προβάλωσιν ἤδη βλέποντες ἀφ’ ἑαυτῶν γινώσκετε ὅτι ἤδη ἐγγὺς τὸ θέρος ἐστίν
So you also, when you see these things happening, know that the kingdom of God is near.31οὕτως καὶ ὑμεῖς ὅταν ἴδητε ταῦτα γινόμενα γινώσκετε ὅτι ἐγγύς ἐστιν βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ
Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all things take place.32ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι οὐ μὴ παρέλθῃ γενεὰ αὕτη ἕως ἂν πάντα γένηται
Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.33 οὐρανὸς καὶ γῆ παρελεύσονται οἱ δὲ λόγοι μου οὐ μὴ παρελεύσονται
“But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly.34Προσέχετε δὲ ἑαυτοῖς μή‿ ποτε βαρηθῶσιν ὑμῶν αἱ καρδίαι ἐν κραιπάλῃ καὶ μέθῃ καὶ μερίμναις βιωτικαῖς καὶ ἐπιστῇ ἐφ’ ὑμᾶς αἰφνίδιος ἡμέρα ἐκείνη ὡς παγίς
For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth.35ἐπεισελεύσεται γὰρ ἐπὶ πάντας τοὺς καθημένους ἐπὶ πρόσωπον πάσης τῆς γῆς
Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.”36ἀγρυπνεῖτε δὲ ἐν παντὶ καιρῷ δεόμενοι ἵνα κατισχύσητε ἐκφυγεῖν ταῦτα πάντα τὰ μέλλοντα γίνεσθαι καὶ σταθῆναι ἔμπροσθεν τοῦ Υἱοῦ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου
And in the daytime He was teaching in the temple, but at night He went out and stayed on the mountain called Olivet.37Ἦν δὲ τὰς ἡμέρας ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ διδάσκων τὰς δὲ νύκτας ἐξερχόμενος ηὐλίζετο εἰς τὸ ὄρος τὸ καλούμενον Ἐλαιῶν
Then early in the morning all the people came to Him in the temple to hear Him.38καὶ πᾶς λαὸς ὤρθριζεν πρὸς αὐτὸν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ ἀκούειν αὐτοῦ
