Then Jesus entered and passed through Jericho.1As Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through it,
Now behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus who was a chief tax collector, and he was rich.2a man named Zacchaeus appeared. He was a leading tax collector, and a rich one at that!
And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not because of the crowd, for he was of short stature.3He was trying to see who Jesus was, but he couldn't do so due to the crowd, since he was a short man.
So he ran ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see Him, for He was going to pass that way.4So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see Jesus, who was going to pass that way.
And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up and saw him, and said to him, “Zacchaeus, make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house.”5When Jesus came to the tree, he looked up and said, "Zacchaeus, hurry and come down! I must stay at your house today."
So he made haste and came down, and received Him joyfully.6Zacchaeus came down quickly and was glad to welcome him into his home.
But when they saw it, they all complained, saying, “He has gone to be a guest with a man who is a sinner.”7But all the people who saw this began to complain: "Jesus is going to be the guest of a notorious sinner!"
Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold.”8Later, Zacchaeus stood up and announced to the Lord, "Look! I'm giving half of my possessions to the destitute, and if I have accused anyone falsely, I'm repaying four times as much as I owe."
And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham;9Then Jesus told him, "Today salvation has come to this home, because this man is also a descendant of Abraham,
for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”10and the Son of Man has come to seek and to save the lost."
Now as they heard these things, He spoke another parable, because He was near Jerusalem and because they thought the kingdom of God would appear immediately.11As they were listening to this, Jesus went on to tell a parable because he was near Jerusalem and because the people thought that the kingdom of God would appear immediately.
Therefore He said: “A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and to return.12So he said, "A prince went to a distant country to be appointed king and then to return.
So he called ten of his servants, delivered to them ten minas, and said to them, ‘Do business till I come.’13He called ten of his servants and gave them ten coins. He told them, 'Invest this money until I come back.'
But his citizens hated him, and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We will not have this man to reign over us.’14But the citizens of his country hated him and sent a delegation to follow him and to announce, 'We don't want this man to rule over us!'
“And so it was that when he returned, having received the kingdom, he then commanded these servants, to whom he had given the money, to be called to him, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading.15"After he was appointed king, the prince came back. He ordered the servants to whom he had given the money to be called so he could find out what they had earned by investing.
Then came the first, saying, ‘Master, your mina has earned ten minas.’16The first servant came and said, 'Sir, your coin has earned ten more coins.'
And he said to him, ‘Well done, good servant; because you were faithful in a very little, have authority over ten cities.’17The king told him, 'Well done, good servant! Because you have been trustworthy in a very small thing, take charge of ten cities.'
And the second came, saying, ‘Master, your mina has earned five minas.’18"The second servant came and said, 'Your coin, sir, has earned five coins.'
Likewise he said to him, ‘You also be over five cities.’19The king told him, 'You take charge of five cities.'
“Then another came, saying, ‘Master, here is your mina, which I have kept put away in a handkerchief.20"Then the other servant came and said, 'Sir, look! Here's your coin. I've kept it in a cloth for safekeeping
For I feared you, because you are an austere man. You collect what you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.’21because I was afraid of you. You are a hard man. You withdraw what you didn't deposit and harvest what you didn't plant.'
And he said to him, ‘Out of your own mouth I will judge you, you wicked servant. You knew that I was an austere man, collecting what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow.22The king told him, 'I will judge you by your own words, you evil servant! You knew, did you, that I was a hard man, and that I withdraw what I didn't deposit and harvest what I didn't plant?
Why then did you not put my money in the bank, that at my coming I might have collected it with interest?’23Then why didn't you put my money in the bank? When I returned, I could have collected it with interest.'
“And he said to those who stood by, ‘Take the mina from him, and give it to him who has ten minas.’24"So the king told those standing nearby, 'Take the coin away from him and give it to the man who has the ten coins.'
(But they said to him, ‘Master, he has ten minas.’)25They answered him, 'Sir, he already has ten coins!'
‘For I say to you, that to everyone who has will be given; and from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.26I tell you, to everyone who has something, more will be given, but from the person who has nothing, even what he has will be taken away.
But bring here those enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, and slay them before me.’ ”27But as for these enemies of mine who didn't want me to be their king—bring them here and slaughter them in my presence!'"
When He had said this, He went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.28After Jesus had said this, he traveled on and went up to Jerusalem.
And it came to pass, when He drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mountain called Olivet, that He sent two of His disciples,29As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples on ahead.
saying, “Go into the village opposite you, where as you enter you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat. Loose it and bring it here.30"Go into the village ahead of you," he said. "As you enter, you will find a colt tied up that no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it along.
And if anyone asks you, ‘Why are you loosing it?’ thus you shall say to him, ‘Because the Lord has need of it.’ ”31If anyone asks you why you are untying it, say this: 'The Lord needs it.'"
So those who were sent went their way and found it just as He had said to them.32So those who were sent went off and found it as Jesus had told them.
But as they were loosing the colt, the owners of it said to them, “Why are you loosing the colt?”33While they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, "Why are you untying the colt?"
And they said, “The Lord has need of him.”34The disciples answered, "The Lord needs it."
Then they brought him to Jesus. And they threw their own clothes on the colt, and they set Jesus on him.35Then they brought the colt to Jesus and put their coats on it, and Jesus sat upon it.
And as He went, many spread their clothes on the road.36As he was riding along, people kept spreading their coats on the road.
Then, as He was now drawing near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen,37He was now approaching the descent from the Mount of Olives. The whole crowd of disciples began to rejoice and to praise God with a loud voice because of all the miracles they had seen.
saying: “ ‘Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the LORD!’ Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”38They said, "How blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven!"
And some of the Pharisees called to Him from the crowd, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.”39Some of the Pharisees in the crowd told Jesus, "Teacher, tell your disciples to be quiet."
But He answered and said to them, “I tell you that if these should keep silent, the stones would immediately cry out.”40He replied, "I tell you, if they were quiet, the stones would cry out!"
Now as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it,41When he came closer and saw the city, he began to grieve over it:
saying, “If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.42"If you had only known today what could have brought you peace! But now it is hidden from your sight,
For days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment around you, surround you and close you in on every side,43because the days will come when your enemies will build walls around you, surround you, and close you in on every side.
and level you, and your children within you, to the ground; and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”44They will level you to the ground—you and those who live within your city limits. They will not leave one stone on another within your walls, because you didn't recognize the time when you were visited."
Then He went into the temple and began to drive out those who bought and sold in it,45Then Jesus went into the Temple and began to throw out those who were selling things.
saying to them, “It is written, ‘My house is a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a ‘den of thieves.’ ”46He told them, "It is written, 'My house is to be called a house of prayer,' but you have turned it into a hideout for bandits!"
And He was teaching daily in the temple. But the chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people sought to destroy Him,47Then he began teaching in the Temple every day. The high priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people kept looking for a way to kill him,
and were unable to do anything; for all the people were very attentive to hear Him.48but they couldn't find a way to do it, because all the people were eager to hear him.
