| 2Now behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus who was a chief tax collector, and he was rich. | 2A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. |
| 3And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not because of the crowd, for he was of short stature. | 3He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. |
| 4So he ran ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see Him, for He was going to pass that way. | 4So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way. |
| 5And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up and saw him, and said to him, “Zacchaeus, make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house.” | 5When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today." |
| 6So he made haste and came down, and received Him joyfully. | 6So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly. |
| 7But when they saw it, they all complained, saying, “He has gone to be a guest with a man who is a sinner.” | 7All the people saw this and began to mutter, "He has gone to be the guest of a sinner." |
| 8Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold.” | 8But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, "Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount." |
| 9And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham; | 9Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. |
| 10for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.” | 10For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost." |
| 11Now as they heard these things, He spoke another parable, because He was near Jerusalem and because they thought the kingdom of God would appear immediately. | 11While they were listening to this, he went on to tell them a parable, because he was near Jerusalem and the people thought that the kingdom of God was going to appear at once. |
| 12Therefore He said: “A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and to return. | 12He said: "A man of noble birth went to a distant country to have himself appointed king and then to return. |
| 13So he called ten of his servants, delivered to them ten minas, and said to them, ‘Do business till I come.’ | 13So he called ten of his servants and gave them ten minas. 'Put this money to work,' he said, 'until I come back.' |
| 14But his citizens hated him, and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We will not have this man to reign over us.’ | 14"But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, 'We don't want this man to be our king.' |
| 15“And so it was that when he returned, having received the kingdom, he then commanded these servants, to whom he had given the money, to be called to him, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading. | 15"He was made king, however, and returned home. Then he sent for the servants to whom he had given the money, in order to find out what they had gained with it. |
| 16Then came the first, saying, ‘Master, your mina has earned ten minas.’ | 16"The first one came and said, 'Sir, your mina has earned ten more.' |
| 17And he said to him, ‘Well done, good servant; because you were faithful in a very little, have authority over ten cities.’ | 17"'Well done, my good servant!' his master replied. 'Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.' |
| 18And the second came, saying, ‘Master, your mina has earned five minas.’ | 18"The second came and said, 'Sir, your mina has earned five more.' |
| 19Likewise he said to him, ‘You also be over five cities.’ | 19"His master answered, 'You take charge of five cities.' |
| 20“Then another came, saying, ‘Master, here is your mina, which I have kept put away in a handkerchief. | 20"Then another servant came and said, 'Sir, here is your mina; I have kept it laid away in a piece of cloth. |
| 21For I feared you, because you are an austere man. You collect what you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.’ | 21I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man. You take out what you did not put in and reap what you did not sow.' |
| 22And he said to him, ‘Out of your own mouth I will judge you, you wicked servant. You knew that I was an austere man, collecting what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow. | 22"His master replied, 'I will judge you by your own words, you wicked servant! You knew, did you, that I am a hard man, taking out what I did not put in, and reaping what I did not sow? |
| 23Why then did you not put my money in the bank, that at my coming I might have collected it with interest?’ | 23Why then didn't you put my money on deposit, so that when I came back, I could have collected it with interest?' |
| 24“And he said to those who stood by, ‘Take the mina from him, and give it to him who has ten minas.’ | 24"Then he said to those standing by, 'Take his mina away from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.' |
| 25(But they said to him, ‘Master, he has ten minas.’) | 25"'Sir,' they said, 'he already has ten!' |
| 26‘For I say to you, that to everyone who has will be given; and from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him. | 26"He replied, 'I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what they have will be taken away. |
| 27But bring here those enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, and slay them before me.’ ” | 27But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them--bring them here and kill them in front of me.'" |
| 28When He had said this, He went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. | 28After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. |
| 29And it came to pass, when He drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mountain called Olivet, that He sent two of His disciples, | 29As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the hill called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, |
| 30saying, “Go into the village opposite you, where as you enter you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat. Loose it and bring it here. | 30"Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. |
| 31And if anyone asks you, ‘Why are you loosing it?’ thus you shall say to him, ‘Because the Lord has need of it.’ ” | 31If anyone asks you, 'Why are you untying it?' say, 'The Lord needs it.'" |
| 32So those who were sent went their way and found it just as He had said to them. | 32Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them. |
| 33But as they were loosing the colt, the owners of it said to them, “Why are you loosing the colt?” | 33As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, "Why are you untying the colt?" |
| 34And they said, “The Lord has need of him.” | 34They replied, "The Lord needs it." |
| 35Then they brought him to Jesus. And they threw their own clothes on the colt, and they set Jesus on him. | 35They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it. |
| 36And as He went, many spread their clothes on the road. | 36As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road. |
| 37Then, as He was now drawing near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen, | 37When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen: |
| 38saying: “ ‘Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the LORD!’ Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” | 38"Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!" "Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!" |
| 39And some of the Pharisees called to Him from the crowd, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.” | 39Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, "Teacher, rebuke your disciples!" |
| 40But He answered and said to them, “I tell you that if these should keep silent, the stones would immediately cry out.” | 40"I tell you," he replied, "if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out." |
| 41Now as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it, | 41As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it |
| 42saying, “If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. | 42and said, "If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace--but now it is hidden from your eyes. |
| 43For days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment around you, surround you and close you in on every side, | 43The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side. |
| 44and level you, and your children within you, to the ground; and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not know the time of your visitation.” | 44They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of God's coming to you." |
| 45Then He went into the temple and began to drive out those who bought and sold in it, | 45When Jesus entered the temple courts, he began to drive out those who were selling. |
| 46saying to them, “It is written, ‘My house is a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a ‘den of thieves.’ ” | 46"It is written," he said to them, "'My house will be a house of prayer'; but you have made it 'a den of robbers.'" |
| 47And He was teaching daily in the temple. But the chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people sought to destroy Him, | 47Every day he was teaching at the temple. But the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the leaders among the people were trying to kill him. |
| 48and were unable to do anything; for all the people were very attentive to hear Him. | 48Yet they could not find any way to do it, because all the people hung on his words. |
