New Living TranslationBerean Study Bible
“Do not make idols or set up carved images, or sacred pillars, or sculptured stones in your land so you may worship them. I am the LORD your God.1“You must not make idols for yourselves or set up a carved image or sacred pillar; you must not place a sculpted stone in your land to bow down to it. For I am the LORD your God.
You must keep my Sabbath days of rest and show reverence for my sanctuary. I am the LORD.2You must keep My Sabbaths and have reverence for My sanctuary. I am the LORD.
“If you follow my decrees and are careful to obey my commands,3If you follow My statutes and carefully keep My commandments,
I will send you the seasonal rains. The land will then yield its crops, and the trees of the field will produce their fruit.4I will give you rains in their season, and the land will yield its produce, and the trees of the field will bear their fruit.
Your threshing season will overlap with the grape harvest, and your grape harvest will overlap with the season of planting grain. You will eat your fill and live securely in your own land.5Your threshing will continue until the grape harvest, and the grape harvest will continue until sowing time; you will have your fill of food to eat and will dwell securely in your land.
“I will give you peace in the land, and you will be able to sleep with no cause for fear. I will rid the land of wild animals and keep your enemies out of your land.6And I will give peace to the land, and you will lie down with nothing to fear. I will rid the land of dangerous animals, and no sword will pass through your land.
In fact, you will chase down your enemies and slaughter them with your swords.7You will pursue your enemies, and they will fall by the sword before you.
Five of you will chase a hundred, and a hundred of you will chase ten thousand! All your enemies will fall beneath your sword.8Five of you will pursue a hundred, and a hundred of you will pursue ten thousand, and your enemies will fall by the sword before you.
“I will look favorably upon you, making you fertile and multiplying your people. And I will fulfill my covenant with you.9I will turn toward you and make you fruitful and multiply you, and I will establish My covenant with you.
You will have such a surplus of crops that you will need to clear out the old grain to make room for the new harvest!10You will still be eating the old supply of grain when you need to clear it out to make room for the new.
I will live among you, and I will not despise you.11And I will make My dwelling place among you, and My soul will not despise you.
I will walk among you; I will be your God, and you will be my people.12I will walk among you and be your God, and you will be My people.
I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt so you would no longer be their slaves. I broke the yoke of slavery from your neck so you can walk with your heads held high. Punishments for Disobedience13I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt so that you would no longer be slaves to the Egyptians. I broke the bars of your yoke and enabled you to walk in uprightness.
“However, if you do not listen to me or obey all these commands,14If, however, you fail to obey Me and to carry out all these commandments,
and if you break my covenant by rejecting my decrees, treating my regulations with contempt, and refusing to obey my commands,15and if you reject My statutes, despise My ordinances, and neglect to carry out all My commandments, and so break My covenant,
I will punish you. I will bring sudden terrors upon you—wasting diseases and burning fevers that will cause your eyes to fail and your life to ebb away. You will plant your crops in vain because your enemies will eat them.16then this is what I will do to you: I will bring upon you sudden terror, wasting disease, and fever that will destroy your sight and drain your life. You will sow your seed in vain, because your enemies will eat it.
I will turn against you, and you will be defeated by your enemies. Those who hate you will rule over you, and you will run even when no one is chasing you!17And I will set My face against you, so that you will be defeated by your enemies. Those who hate you will rule over you, and you will flee when no one pursues you.
“And if, in spite of all this, you still disobey me, I will punish you seven times over for your sins.18And if after all this you will not obey Me, I will proceed to punish you sevenfold for your sins.
I will break your proud spirit by making the skies as unyielding as iron and the earth as hard as bronze.19I will break down your stubborn pride and make your sky like iron and your land like bronze,
All your work will be for nothing, for your land will yield no crops, and your trees will bear no fruit.20and your strength will be spent in vain. For your land will not yield its produce, and the trees of the land will not bear their fruit.
“If even then you remain hostile toward me and refuse to obey me, I will inflict disaster on you seven times over for your sins.21If you walk in hostility toward Me and refuse to obey Me, I will multiply your plagues seven times, according to your sins.
I will send wild animals that will rob you of your children and destroy your livestock. Your numbers will dwindle, and your roads will be deserted.22I will send wild animals against you to rob you of your children, destroy your livestock, and reduce your numbers, until your roads lie desolate.
“And if you fail to learn the lesson and continue your hostility toward me,23And if in spite of these things you do not accept My discipline, but continue to walk in hostility toward Me,
then I myself will be hostile toward you. I will personally strike you with calamity seven times over for your sins.24then I will act with hostility toward you, and I will strike you sevenfold for your sins.
I will send armies against you to carry out the curse of the covenant you have broken. When you run to your towns for safety, I will send a plague to destroy you there, and you will be handed over to your enemies.25And I will bring a sword against you to execute the vengeance of the covenant. Though you withdraw into your cities, I will send a plague among you, and you will be delivered into the hand of the enemy.
I will destroy your food supply, so that ten women will need only one oven to bake bread for their families. They will ration your food by weight, and though you have food to eat, you will not be satisfied.26When I cut off your supply of bread, ten women will bake your bread in a single oven and dole out your bread by weight, so that you will eat but not be satisfied.
“If in spite of all this you still refuse to listen and still remain hostile toward me,27But if in spite of all this you do not obey Me, but continue to walk in hostility toward Me,
then I will give full vent to my hostility. I myself will punish you seven times over for your sins.28then I will walk in fury against you, and I, even I, will punish you sevenfold for your sins.
Then you will eat the flesh of your own sons and daughters.29You will eat the flesh of your own sons and daughters.
I will destroy your pagan shrines and knock down your places of worship. I will leave your lifeless corpses piled on top of your lifeless idols, and I will despise you.30I will destroy your high places, cut down your incense altars, and heap your lifeless bodies on the lifeless remains of your idols; and My soul will despise you.
I will make your cities desolate and destroy your places of pagan worship. I will take no pleasure in your offerings that should be a pleasing aroma to me.31I will reduce your cities to rubble and lay waste your sanctuaries, and I will refuse to smell the pleasing aroma of your sacrifices.
Yes, I myself will devastate your land, and your enemies who come to occupy it will be appalled at what they see.32And I will lay waste the land, so that your enemies who dwell in it will be appalled.
I will scatter you among the nations and bring out my sword against you. Your land will become desolate, and your cities will lie in ruins.33But I will scatter you among the nations and will draw out a sword after you as your land becomes desolate and your cities are laid waste.
Then at last the land will enjoy its neglected Sabbath years as it lies desolate while you are in exile in the land of your enemies. Then the land will finally rest and enjoy the Sabbaths it missed.34Then the land shall enjoy its Sabbaths all the days it lies desolate, while you are in the land of your enemies. At that time the land will rest and enjoy its Sabbaths.
As long as the land lies in ruins, it will enjoy the rest you never allowed it to take every seventh year while you lived in it.35As long as it lies desolate, the land will have the rest it did not receive during the Sabbaths when you lived in it.
“And for those of you who survive, I will demoralize you in the land of your enemies. You will live in such fear that the sound of a leaf driven by the wind will send you fleeing. You will run as though fleeing from a sword, and you will fall even when no one pursues you.36As for those of you who survive, I will send a faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies, so that even the sound of a windblown leaf will put them to flight. And they will flee as one flees the sword, and fall when no one pursues them.
Though no one is chasing you, you will stumble over each other as though fleeing from a sword. You will have no power to stand up against your enemies.37They will stumble over one another as before the sword, though no one is behind them. So you will not be able to stand against your enemies.
You will die among the foreign nations and be devoured in the land of your enemies.38You will perish among the nations, and the land of your enemies will consume you.
Those of you who survive will waste away in your enemies’ lands because of their sins and the sins of their ancestors.39Those of you who survive in the lands of your enemies will waste away in their iniquity and will decay in the sins of their fathers.
“But at last my people will confess their sins and the sins of their ancestors for betraying me and being hostile toward me.40But if they will confess their iniquity and that of their fathers in the unfaithfulness that they practiced against Me, by which they have also walked in hostility toward Me—
When I have turned their hostility back on them and brought them to the land of their enemies, then at last their stubborn hearts will be humbled, and they will pay for their sins.41and I acted with hostility toward them and brought them into the land of their enemies—and if their uncircumcised hearts will be humbled and they will make amends for their iniquity,
Then I will remember my covenant with Jacob and my covenant with Isaac and my covenant with Abraham, and I will remember the land.42then I will remember My covenant with Jacob and My covenant with Isaac and My covenant with Abraham, and I will remember the land.
For the land must be abandoned to enjoy its years of Sabbath rest as it lies deserted. At last the people will pay for their sins, for they have continually rejected my regulations and despised my decrees.43For the land will be abandoned by them, and it will enjoy its Sabbaths by lying desolate without them. And they will pay the penalty for their iniquity, because they rejected My ordinances and abhorred My statutes.
“But despite all this, I will not utterly reject or despise them while they are in exile in the land of their enemies. I will not cancel my covenant with them by wiping them out, for I am the LORD their God.44Yet in spite of this, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not reject or despise them so as to destroy them and break My covenant with them; for I am the LORD their God.
For their sakes I will remember my ancient covenant with their ancestors, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt in the sight of all the nations, that I might be their God. I am the LORD.”45But for their sake I will remember the covenant with their fathers, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the nations, that I might be their God. I am the LORD.”
These are the decrees, regulations, and instructions that the LORD gave through Moses on Mount Sinai as evidence of the relationship between himself and the Israelites.46These are the statutes, ordinances, and laws that the LORD established between Himself and the Israelites through Moses on Mount Sinai.
