The Linen Belt

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
1This is what the LORD said to me: "Go and buy a linen belt and put it around your waist, but do not let it touch water."1Thus says the LORD to me, “Go and buy a linen loincloth and put it around your waist, and do not dip it in water.”1Thus the LORD said to me, "Go and buy yourself a linen waistband and put it around your waist, but do not put it in water."1Thus saith the LORD unto me, Go and get thee a linen girdle, and put it upon thy loins, and put it not in water.1This is what the LORD said to me: "Go and buy yourself a linen undergarment and put it on, but do not put it in water."
2So I bought a belt, as the LORD directed, and put it around my waist.2So I bought a loincloth according to the word of the LORD, and put it around my waist.2So I bought the waistband in accordance with the word of the LORD and put it around my waist.2So I got a girdle according to the word of the LORD, and put it on my loins.2So I bought underwear as the LORD instructed me and put it on.
3Then the word of the LORD came to me a second time:3And the word of the LORD came to me a second time,3Then the word of the LORD came to me a second time, saying,3And the word of the LORD came unto me the second time, saying,3Then the word of the LORD came to me a second time:
4"Take the belt you bought and are wearing around your waist, and go now to Perath and hide it there in a crevice in the rocks."4“Take the loincloth that you have bought, which is around your waist, and arise, go to the Euphrates and hide it there in a cleft of the rock.”4"Take the waistband that you have bought, which is around your waist, and arise, go to the Euphrates and hide it there in a crevice of the rock."4Take the girdle that thou hast got, which is upon thy loins, and arise, go to Euphrates, and hide it there in a hole of the rock.4"Take the underwear that you bought and are wearing, and go at once to the Euphrates and hide it in a rocky crevice."
NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
5So I went and hid it at Perath, as the LORD told me.5So I went and hid it by the Euphrates, as the LORD commanded me.5So I went and hid it by the Euphrates, as the LORD had commanded me.5So I went, and hid it by Euphrates, as the LORD commanded me.5So I went and hid it by the Euphrates, as the LORD commanded me.
6Many days later the LORD said to me, "Go now to Perath and get the belt I told you to hide there."6And after many days the LORD said to me, “Arise, go to the Euphrates, and take from there the loincloth that I commanded you to hide there.”6After many days the LORD said to me, "Arise, go to the Euphrates and take from there the waistband which I commanded you to hide there."6And it came to pass after many days, that the LORD said unto me, Arise, go to Euphrates, and take the girdle from thence, which I commanded thee to hide there.6A long time later the LORD said to me, "Go at once to the Euphrates and get the underwear that I commanded you to hide there."
7So I went to Perath and dug up the belt and took it from the place where I had hidden it, but now it was ruined and completely useless.7Then I went to the Euphrates, and dug, and I took the loincloth from the place where I had hidden it. And behold, the loincloth was spoiled; it was good for nothing.7Then I went to the Euphrates and dug, and I took the waistband from the place where I had hidden it; and lo, the waistband was ruined, it was totally worthless.7Then I went to Euphrates, and digged, and took the girdle from the place where I had hid it: and, behold, the girdle was marred, it was profitable for nothing.7So I went to the Euphrates and dug up the underwear and got it from the place where I had hidden it, but it was ruined--of no use at all.
8Then the word of the LORD came to me:8Then the word of the LORD came to me:8Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,8Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,8Then the word of the LORD came to me:
9"This is what the LORD says: 'In the same way I will ruin the pride of Judah and the great pride of Jerusalem.9“Thus says the LORD: Even so will I spoil the pride of Judah and the great pride of Jerusalem.9"Thus says the LORD, 'Just so will I destroy the pride of Judah and the great pride of Jerusalem.9Thus saith the LORD, After this manner will I mar the pride of Judah, and the great pride of Jerusalem.9"This is what the LORD says: Just like this I will ruin the great pride of both Judah and Jerusalem.
NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
10These wicked people, who refuse to listen to my words, who follow the stubbornness of their hearts and go after other gods to serve and worship them, will be like this belt--completely useless!10This evil people, who refuse to hear my words, who stubbornly follow their own heart and have gone after other gods to serve them and worship them, shall be like this loincloth, which is good for nothing.10'This wicked people, who refuse to listen to My words, who walk in the stubbornness of their hearts and have gone after other gods to serve them and to bow down to them, let them be just like this waistband which is totally worthless.10This evil people, which refuse to hear my words, which walk in the imagination of their heart, and walk after other gods, to serve them, and to worship them, shall even be as this girdle, which is good for nothing.10These evil people, who refuse to listen to Me, who follow the stubbornness of their own hearts, and who have followed other gods to serve and worship--they will be like this underwear, of no use at all.
11For as a belt is bound around the waist, so I bound all the people of Israel and all the people of Judah to me,' declares the LORD, 'to be my people for my renown and praise and honor. But they have not listened.'11For as the loincloth clings to the waist of a man, so I made the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah cling to me, declares the LORD, that they might be for me a people, a name, a praise, and a glory, but they would not listen.11'For as the waistband clings to the waist of a man, so I made the whole household of Israel and the whole household of Judah cling to Me,' declares the LORD, 'that they might be for Me a people, for renown, for praise and for glory; but they did not listen.'11For as the girdle cleaveth to the loins of a man, so have I caused to cleave unto me the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah, saith the LORD; that they might be unto me for a people, and for a name, and for a praise, and for a glory: but they would not hear.11Just as underwear clings to one's waist, so I fastened the whole house of Israel and of Judah to Me"--this is the LORD's declaration--"so that they might be My people for My fame, praise, and glory, but they would not obey.

The Wineskins

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
12"Say to them: 'This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Every wineskin should be filled with wine.' And if they say to you, 'Don't we know that every wineskin should be filled with wine?'12“You shall speak to them this word: ‘Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, “Every jar shall be filled with wine.”’ And they will say to you, ‘Do we not indeed know that every jar will be filled with wine?’12"Therefore you are to speak this word to them, 'Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, "Every jug is to be filled with wine."' And when they say to you, 'Do we not very well know that every jug is to be filled with wine?'12Therefore thou shalt speak unto them this word; Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Every bottle shall be filled with wine: and they shall say unto thee, Do we not certainly know that every bottle shall be filled with wine?12"Say this to them: This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Every jar should be filled with wine. Then they will respond to you, 'Don't we know that every jar should be filled with wine?
13then tell them, 'This is what the LORD says: I am going to fill with drunkenness all who live in this land, including the kings who sit on David's throne, the priests, the prophets and all those living in Jerusalem.13Then you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the LORD: Behold, I will fill with drunkenness all the inhabitants of this land: the kings who sit on David’s throne, the priests, the prophets, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem.13then say to them, 'Thus says the LORD, "Behold I am about to fill all the inhabitants of this land-- the kings that sit for David on his throne, the priests, the prophets and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem-- with drunkenness!13Then shalt thou say unto them, Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will fill all the inhabitants of this land, even the kings that sit upon David's throne, and the priests, and the prophets, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, with drunkenness.13And you will say to them: This is what the LORD says: I am about to fill all who live in this land--the kings who reign for David on his throne, the priests, the prophets and all the residents of Jerusalem--with drunkenness.
14I will smash them one against the other, parents and children alike, declares the LORD. I will allow no pity or mercy or compassion to keep me from destroying them.'"14And I will dash them one against another, fathers and sons together, declares the LORD. I will not pity or spare or have compassion, that I should not destroy them.’”14"I will dash them against each other, both the fathers and the sons together," declares the LORD. "I will not show pity nor be sorry nor have compassion so as not to destroy them."'"14And I will dash them one against another, even the fathers and the sons together, saith the LORD: I will not pity, nor spare, nor have mercy, but destroy them.14I will smash them against each other, fathers and sons alike"--this is the LORD's declaration. "I will allow no mercy, pity, or compassion to keep Me from destroying them."

Captivity Threatened

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
15Hear and pay attention, do not be arrogant, for the LORD has spoken.15Hear and give ear; be not proud, for the LORD has spoken.15Listen and give heed, do not be haughty, For the LORD has spoken.15Hear ye, and give ear; be not proud: for the LORD hath spoken.15Listen and pay attention. Do not be proud, for the LORD has spoken.
16Give glory to the LORD your God before he brings the darkness, before your feet stumble on the darkening hills. You hope for light, but he will turn it to utter darkness and change it to deep gloom.16Give glory to the LORD your God before he brings darkness, before your feet stumble on the twilight mountains, and while you look for light he turns it into gloom and makes it deep darkness.16Give glory to the LORD your God, Before He brings darkness And before your feet stumble On the dusky mountains, And while you are hoping for light He makes it into deep darkness, And turns it into gloom.16Give glory to the LORD your God, before he cause darkness, and before your feet stumble upon the dark mountains, and, while ye look for light, he turn it into the shadow of death, and make it gross darkness.16Give glory to the LORD your God before He brings darkness, before your feet stumble on the mountains at dusk. You wait for light, but He brings darkest gloom and makes thick darkness.
17If you do not listen, I will weep in secret because of your pride; my eyes will weep bitterly, overflowing with tears, because the LORD's flock will be taken captive.17But if you will not listen, my soul will weep in secret for your pride; my eyes will weep bitterly and run down with tears, because the LORD’s flock has been taken captive.17But if you will not listen to it, My soul will sob in secret for such pride; And my eyes will bitterly weep And flow down with tears, Because the flock of the LORD has been taken captive.17But if ye will not hear it, my soul shall weep in secret places for your pride; and mine eye shall weep sore, and run down with tears, because the LORD'S flock is carried away captive.17But if you will not listen, my innermost being will weep in secret because of your pride. My eyes will overflow with tears, for the LORD's flock has been taken captive.
18Say to the king and to the queen mother, "Come down from your thrones, for your glorious crowns will fall from your heads."18Say to the king and the queen mother: “Take a lowly seat, for your beautiful crown has come down from your head.”18Say to the king and the queen mother, "Take a lowly seat, For your beautiful crown Has come down from your head."18Say unto the king and to the queen, Humble yourselves, sit down: for your principalities shall come down, even the crown of your glory.18Say to the king and the queen mother: Take a humble seat, for your glorious crowns have fallen from your heads.
NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
19The cities in the Negev will be shut up, and there will be no one to open them. All Judah will be carried into exile, carried completely away.19The cities of the Negeb are shut up, with none to open them; all Judah is taken into exile, wholly taken into exile.19The cities of the Negev have been locked up, And there is no one to open them; All Judah has been carried into exile, Wholly carried into exile.19The cities of the south shall be shut up, and none shall open them: Judah shall be carried away captive all of it, it shall be wholly carried away captive.19The cities of the Negev are under siege; no one can help them. All of Judah has been taken into exile, taken completely into exile.
20Look up and see those who are coming from the north. Where is the flock that was entrusted to you, the sheep of which you boasted?20“Lift up your eyes and see those who come from the north. Where is the flock that was given you, your beautiful flock?20"Lift up your eyes and see Those coming from the north. Where is the flock that was given you, Your beautiful sheep?20Lift up your eyes, and behold them that come from the north: where is the flock that was given thee, thy beautiful flock?20Look up and see those coming from the north. Where is the flock entrusted to you, the sheep that were your pride?
21What will you say when the LORD sets over you those you cultivated as your special allies? Will not pain grip you like that of a woman in labor?21What will you say when they set as head over you those whom you yourself have taught to be friends to you? Will not pangs take hold of you like those of a woman in labor?21"What will you say when He appoints over you-- And you yourself had taught them-- Former companions to be head over you? Will not pangs take hold of you Like a woman in childbirth?21What wilt thou say when he shall punish thee? for thou hast taught them to be captains, and as chief over thee: shall not sorrows take thee, as a woman in travail?21What will you say when He appoints close friends as leaders over you, ones you yourself trained? Won't labor pains seize you, as they do a woman in labor?
22And if you ask yourself, "Why has this happened to me?"-- it is because of your many sins that your skirts have been torn off and your body mistreated.22And if you say in your heart, ‘Why have these things come upon me?’ it is for the greatness of your iniquity that your skirts are lifted up and you suffer violence.22"If you say in your heart, 'Why have these things happened to me?' Because of the magnitude of your iniquity Your skirts have been removed And your heels have been exposed.22And if thou say in thine heart, Wherefore come these things upon me? For the greatness of thine iniquity are thy skirts discovered, and thy heels made bare.22And when you ask yourself, "Why have these things happened to me?" It is because of your great guilt that your skirts have been stripped off, your body exposed.
23Can an Ethiopian change his skin or a leopard its spots? Neither can you do good who are accustomed to doing evil.23Can the Ethiopian change his skin or the leopard his spots? Then also you can do good who are accustomed to do evil.23"Can the Ethiopian change his skin Or the leopard his spots? Then you also can do good Who are accustomed to doing evil.23Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? then may ye also do good, that are accustomed to do evil.23Can the Cushite change his skin, or a leopard his spots? If so, you might be able to do what is good, you who are instructed in evil.

24"I will scatter you like chaff driven by the desert wind.24I will scatter you like chaff driven by the wind from the desert.24"Therefore I will scatter them like drifting straw To the desert wind.24Therefore will I scatter them as the stubble that passeth away by the wind of the wilderness.24I will scatter you like drifting chaff before the desert wind.
25This is your lot, the portion I have decreed for you," declares the LORD, "because you have forgotten me and trusted in false gods.25This is your lot, the portion I have measured out to you, declares the LORD, because you have forgotten me and trusted in lies.25"This is your lot, the portion measured to you From Me," declares the LORD, "Because you have forgotten Me And trusted in falsehood.25This is thy lot, the portion of thy measures from me, saith the LORD; because thou hast forgotten me, and trusted in falsehood.25This is your lot, what I have decreed for you-- this is the LORD's declaration-- because you have forgotten Me and trusted in Falsehood.
26I will pull up your skirts over your face that your shame may be seen--26I myself will lift up your skirts over your face, and your shame will be seen.26"So I Myself have also stripped your skirts off over your face, That your shame may be seen.26Therefore will I discover thy skirts upon thy face, that thy shame may appear.26I will pull your skirts up over your face so that your shame might be seen.
27your adulteries and lustful neighings, your shameless prostitution! I have seen your detestable acts on the hills and in the fields. Woe to you, Jerusalem! How long will you be unclean?"27I have seen your abominations, your adulteries and neighings, your lewd whorings, on the hills in the field. Woe to you, O Jerusalem! How long will it be before you are made clean?”27"As for your adulteries and your lustful neighings, The lewdness of your prostitution On the hills in the field, I have seen your abominations. Woe to you, O Jerusalem! How long will you remain unclean?"27I have seen thine adulteries, and thy neighings, the lewdness of thy whoredom, and thine abominations on the hills in the fields. Woe unto thee, O Jerusalem! wilt thou not be made clean? when shall it once be?27Your adulteries and your lustful neighing, your heinous prostitution on the hills, in the fields-- I have seen your detestable acts. Woe to you, Jerusalem! You are unclean-- for how long yet?
