Proverbs 15
Berean Study Bible

A Gentle Answer Turns Away Wrath

A gentle answer turns away wrath,

Calm and gracious speech can restrain anger before it grows into open conflict. The Hebrew word for “gentle” can also mean “soft” or “tender.” In a culture where insults could quickly bring shame, retaliation, or violence, a measured response helped preserve peace and honor. Such restraint reflects wisdom and self-control, choosing reconciliation rather than escalation.

Pro 25:15 Through patience a ruler can be persuaded,…
Jas 1:19-20 My beloved brothers, understand this: Be quick to listen…
2Ti 2:24-25 And a servant of the Lord must not be quarrelsome…

but a harsh word stirs up anger.

Cutting, insulting, or reckless speech inflames resentment and can deepen division. Words carry moral weight and often shape the course of a conflict, either calming a wounded spirit or provoking further hostility.

Jas 3:5-10 In the same way, the tongue is a small part of the body,…
Eph 4:29-31 Let no unwholesome talk come out of your mouths,…
Col 3:8-9 But now you must put aside anger, rage, malice…

The tongue of the wise commends knowledge,

Wise speech rightly presents truth and understanding. In Israel’s oral culture, words carried great weight in teaching, judgment, worship, and family life. Wisdom begins with reverence for God and shapes both what a person says and how it is said. Such speech strengthens others, preserves what is true, and reflects a heart governed by understanding.

Pro 10:13 Wisdom is found on the lips of the discerning,…
Pro 16:23 The heart of the wise man instructs his mouth…
Pro 20:15 There is an abundance of gold and rubies,…

but the mouth of the fool spouts folly.

A fool rejects God’s instruction and speaks without restraint or discernment. His words pour out recklessly, revealing a corrupt character and often bringing harm, conflict, and confusion. The contrast shows that speech is not neutral: it exposes whether a person is guided by godly wisdom or by foolish rebellion.

Pro 12:23 A shrewd man keeps his knowledge to himself,…
Pro 13:16 Every prudent man acts with knowledge…
Ecc 10:12-14 The words of a wise man’s mouth are gracious,…

The eyes of the LORD

“The eyes of the LORD” portray Yahweh’s complete knowledge of all He has made. Nothing escapes His notice, and His watchful care extends over every person and circumstance.

2Ch 16:9 For the eyes of the LORD roam to and fro over all the earth,…
Zec 4:10 For who has despised the day of small things?…
Psa 33:18 Surely the eyes of the LORD are on those who fear Him…

are in every place,

“The eyes of the Lord are in every place” declares that God is present throughout heaven and earth, unrestricted by distance, darkness, or human concealment.

Psa 139:7-10 Where can I go to escape Your Spirit?…
Jer 23:24 Can a man hide in secret places where I cannot see him?…
Amo 9:2-4 Though they dig down to Sheol, from there My hand will take them…

observing the evil and the good.

He sees every deed and motive, holding the wicked accountable while recognizing the faithfulness of the righteous.

Ecc 12:14 For God will bring every deed into judgment,…
1Pe 3:12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous…
Psa 11:4-5 The LORD is in His holy temple; the LORD is on His throne…

A soothing tongue is a tree of life,

Gentle, truthful words strengthen those who hear them, bringing comfort, encouragement, and renewed hope. Like the tree of life in Eden, such speech reflects God’s goodness and sustains life within the community. Wisdom expressed with patience and mercy can restore relationships and steady troubled hearts.

Pro 12:18 Speaking rashly is like a piercing sword,…
Pro 16:24 Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul…
Pro 11:30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life…

but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit.

Crooked, deceitful, or cruel speech wounds deeply and can rob a person of courage and peace. In a society where families and communities depended on trust, destructive words could bring lasting division and grief. The proverb warns that the tongue has power either to nourish life or to inflict serious harm.

Pro 18:14 The spirit of a man can endure his sickness…
Psa 34:18 The LORD is near to the brokenhearted; He saves the contrite…
Jas 3:6-8 The tongue also is a fire, a world of wickedness…

A fool rejects his father’s discipline,

In Israel’s covenant life, parents bore primary responsibility for forming their children in the fear of the Lord. A son who despised his father’s correction rejected both family authority and the wisdom meant to guard his life from sin and ruin.

Pro 13:1 A wise son heeds his father’s discipline……
Pro 1:8-9 Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction,…
Deu 21:18-21 If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son…

but whoever heeds correction is prudent.

Receiving reproof marks a prudent person who recognizes his need to learn and change. Such humility produces wisdom, understanding, and sound judgment, helping him walk wisely before God and avoid the consequences that follow stubbornness.

Pro 19:20 Listen to counsel and accept discipline…
Pro 9:9 Instruct a wise man, and he will be wiser still;…
Pro 12:1 Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge,…

The house of the righteous has great treasure,

A life ordered by obedience to God brings lasting benefit to the household. The treasure includes material provision when God grants it, but also the stability, peace, wisdom, and security that accompany faithful living. Righteousness shapes the family, its work, and its relationships under God’s blessing.

Psa 112:3 Wealth and riches are in his house…
Pro 24:3-4 By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding…
Pro 3:33 The curse of the LORD is on the house of the wicked…

but the income of the wicked is trouble.

Wealth gained through dishonesty, oppression, or disregard for God carries trouble rather than security. Such income refers to profits accumulated through deceit or injustice, bringing anxiety, conflict, fear, ruined relationships, and accountability before God. Though it may appear profitable for a time, it cannot provide the lasting good found in a righteous household.

Pro 10:2 Ill-gotten treasures profit nothing, but righteousness…
Pro 21:6 Making a fortune by a lying tongue is a vanishing mist,…
Hab 2:9-10 Woe to him who builds his house by unjust gain,…

The lips of the wise spread knowledge,

Those who fear the Lord and order their lives by His truth use their lips, symbolizing speech, to instruct, correct, and strengthen others. In Israel, wisdom was commonly passed from parents, elders, priests, and teachers through spoken instruction, helping preserve faithfulness to God and moral order within the community.

Mal 2:7 For the lips of a priest should preserve knowledge…
Ecc 12:9 Not only was the Teacher wise, but he also taught…
Col 3:16 Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you…

but not so the hearts of fools.

Fools reject God’s instruction and follow their own desires. Because their inner lives lack truth and discernment, their speech cannot reliably guide others. Their words often spread error, disorder, or harm rather than the knowledge that leads to righteous living.

Psa 14:1 The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.”…
Rom 1:21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified Him…
Pro 18:2 A fool does not delight in understanding,…

The sacrifice of the wicked is detestable to the LORD,

Sacrifices commanded under the Mosaic Law were never intended to excuse rebellion or conceal sin. Those who defied God’s commands while continuing religious observances offered worship without repentance, and their outward acts were offensive to Him.

Pro 21:27 The sacrifice of the wicked is detestable—…
1Sa 15:22 But Samuel declared: “Does the LORD delight in…
Isa 1:13-15 Bring your worthless offerings no more; your incense…

but the prayer of the upright is His delight.

The upright seek to live faithfully before God and approach Him with sincerity. Their prayers reflect humble dependence, obedience, and fellowship with the LORD, who receives genuine worship from those whose hearts are devoted to Him.

Jas 5:16 Therefore confess your sins to each other…
Psa 34:15 The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous…
1Pe 3:12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous…

The LORD detests the way of the wicked,

God’s holy character stands opposed to lives marked by rebellion, idolatry, injustice, and immorality. The wicked choose a course that rejects His authority and disregards His commands. Their conduct is not merely a series of isolated acts but a settled path leading away from the Lord.

Psa 1:6 For the LORD guards the path of the righteous,…
Psa 5:4-5 You are not a God who delights in wickedness;…
Pro 6:16-19 There are six things that the LORD hates,…

but He loves those who pursue righteousness.

God delights in those who seek to live according to His will. Righteousness involves faithful obedience, integrity, justice, and devotion to Him from the heart. Though no one attains righteousness apart from God’s grace, He receives and sustains those who turn from sin and follow His ways.

2Ti 2:22 Flee from youthful passions and pursue righteousness…
Pro 21:21 He who pursues righteousness and loving devotion…
Psa 146:8 the LORD opens the eyes of the blind,…

Discipline is harsh for him who leaves the path;

Departing from God’s way brings painful consequences. The path of wisdom requires obedience to the Lord’s commands, while turning aside leads to sin, disorder, and corrective judgment. Discipline may come through the results of one’s choices, the rebuke of others, or God’s direct chastening.

Pro 10:17 Whoever heeds instruction is on the path to life,…
Pro 13:18 Poverty and shame come to him who ignores discipline…
Heb 12:11 No discipline seems enjoyable at the time, but painful.…

he who hates correction will die.

Refusing rebuke reveals a hardened heart unwilling to turn from sin. Such stubbornness leads toward destruction, including spiritual death under God’s judgment. Wisdom requires humility to receive correction and abandon a sinful course.

Pro 12:1 Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge,…
Pro 5:12-14 “How I hated discipline, and my heart despised”…
Pro 29:1 A man who remains stiff-necked after much reproof…

Sheol and Abaddon lie open before the LORD—

Sheol, the shadowy realm of the dead, a place of darkness and silence for departed spirits, and Abaddon, meaning “destruction,” the place of ruin, are fully exposed before God. No realm beyond human sight, including death and judgment, is hidden from His knowledge or authority.

Job 26:6 Sheol is naked before God, and Abaddon has no covering.
Psa 139:8 If I ascend to the heavens, You are there;…

how much more the hearts of men!

God sees every person’s thoughts, motives, desires, and intentions. Human secrecy cannot conceal sin or unbelief from Him, and He judges the inward life with perfect righteousness.

1Ki 8:39 For You alone know the hearts of all men—…
Jer 17:10 I, the LORD, search the heart; I examine the mind…
1Sa 16:7 But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance…

A mocker does not love to be reproved,

A mocker treats correction as an insult because pride resists the exposure of sin and error. Rather than receiving reproof as an opportunity to turn from folly, he scorns the one who gives it. His contempt reveals a settled resistance to truth and a refusal to submit to God’s instruction.

Pro 9:8 Do not rebuke a mocker, or he will hate you;…
Pro 12:1 Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge,…
Pro 13:1 A wise son heeds his father’s discipline……

nor will he consult the wise.

Because he rejects correction, he also avoids those whose counsel might challenge his course. Wisdom requires humility, the fear of the Lord, and a willingness to learn. By refusing godly counsel, the mocker isolates himself in his own judgment and presses on toward the consequences of his folly.

Pro 12:15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes,…
Pro 19:20 Listen to counsel and accept discipline…
Pro 11:14 For lack of guidance, a nation falls,…

A joyful heart makes a cheerful countenance,

Joy rooted in trust in God affects the whole person and becomes visible in one’s demeanor. Even amid hardship, those who know God’s faithfulness can show a settled confidence and gratitude that strengthens others.

Pro 17:22 A joyful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit…
Psa 34:5 Those who look to Him are radiant with joy;…
Ecc 8:1 Who is like the wise man? Who knows the interpretation…

but sorrow of the heart crushes the spirit.

Deep grief can weigh heavily on the inner person, draining courage and hope. Scripture recognizes the reality of such suffering while directing the afflicted to the God who sees, comforts, and sustains the brokenhearted.

Pro 18:14 The spirit of a man can endure his sickness…
Psa 34:18 The LORD is near to the brokenhearted; He saves the contrite…
Isa 61:3 to console the mourners in Zion—to give them a crown…

A discerning heart seeks knowledge,

Wisdom recognizes its own need for instruction and actively pursues truth. In Scripture, the heart encompasses the mind, will, and inner life; therefore, discernment directs a person toward sound judgment and godly understanding. Such a heart refuses complacency and seeks to grow in knowledge that leads to righteous living.

Pro 18:15 The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge…
Pro 14:6 A mocker seeks wisdom and finds none, but knowledge comes…
Pro 2:3-5 if you truly call out to insight…

but the mouth of a fool feeds on folly.

The fool is satisfied with empty, corrupt, or careless speech because he rejects wisdom’s correction. His words reveal what he values, and continued devotion to folly shapes his conduct and brings harmful results. The contrast shows that people are formed by what they pursue: wisdom strengthens discernment, while folly deepens moral blindness.

Pro 10:14 The wise store up knowledge, but the mouth of the fool…
Pro 18:7 A fool’s mouth is his ruin, and his lips…
Pro 26:11 As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool repeats his folly.

All the days of the oppressed are bad,

Oppression makes life a continual burden, whether caused by cruel rulers, unjust treatment, poverty, or affliction. Israel knew such suffering under Egypt’s bondage and later in exile. The proverb recognizes the real hardship of those whose circumstances seem unrelentingly painful.

Ecc 4:1 I looked, and I considered all the oppression under the sun.…
Job 3:20-23 Why is light given to the miserable, and life to the bitter…
Exo 3:7 The LORD said, “I have indeed seen the affliction…

but a cheerful heart has a continual feast.

A heart marked by gratitude, faith, and contentment finds lasting refreshment even in difficult conditions. Such joy does not deny suffering but rests in God’s care and provision, giving inward abundance that circumstances cannot remove.

Pro 17:22 A joyful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit…
Psa 4:7 You have filled my heart with more joy than…
Ecc 9:7 Go, eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine…

Better a little with the fear of the LORD

Reverent obedience to God gives lasting security and contentment even when possessions are few. A household that honors the LORD possesses a peace and wisdom that material abundance cannot provide.

Pro 16:8 Better a little with righteousness than great gain…
Pro 22:4 The rewards of humility and the fear of the LORD…
Pro 19:23 The fear of the LORD leads to life, that one may rest…

than great treasure with turmoil.

Wealth may bring pressure, conflict, injustice, and divided loyalties when it is pursued apart from God. Great possessions are not condemned, but they cannot replace the peace that comes from fearing the LORD.

Pro 17:1 Better a dry morsel in quietness than house full of feasting…
Ecc 4:6 Better one handful with tranquility than two handfuls…
Jas 3:16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist,…

Better a dish of vegetables where there is love

A simple meal shared in a home marked by affection, peace, and faithfulness brings greater satisfaction than outward prosperity. Vegetables were an ordinary and inexpensive food, yet contentment does not depend on abundance when family relationships are sound.

Pro 17:1 Better a dry morsel in quietness than house full of feasting…
Col 3:14 And over all these virtues put on love…
Ecc 4:6 Better one handful with tranquility than two handfuls…

than a fattened ox with hatred.

A fattened ox represented a costly meal, usually associated with celebration and wealth. But hostility, resentment, and strife turn even a lavish table into a miserable setting. Material provision cannot replace the security and joy found in a household governed by love.

1Jn 4:20 If anyone says, “I love God,” but hates his brother,…
Jas 4:1-2 What causes conflicts and quarrels among you?…
Pro 21:9 Better to live on a corner of the roof…

A hot-tempered man stirs up strife,

Uncontrolled anger readily turns small offenses into larger conflicts. Such a man disrupts families, communities, and relationships by provoking harsh words and retaliatory actions. His temper becomes a source of division rather than justice or peace.

Pro 29:22 An angry man stirs up dissension, and a hot-tempered man…
Jas 1:20 man’s anger does not bring about the righteousness…
Pro 14:29 A patient man has great understanding, but…

but he who is slow to anger calms dispute.

Patience restrains conflict before it spreads. A person who governs his spirit can answer without escalating hostility, helping restore order where anger has created tension. Self-control is therefore a strength that preserves peace and reflects wise conduct.

Pro 16:32 He who is slow to anger is better than a warrior,…
Jas 1:19 My beloved brothers, understand this: Be quick to listen…
Pro 20:3 It is honorable for a man to resolve a dispute,…

The way of the slacker is like a hedge of thorns,

Laziness brings avoidable hardship. Like an uncultivated field overrun with thorns, the slacker’s life becomes hindered by neglected duties, missed opportunities, and the consequences of inaction.

Hos 2:6 Therefore, behold, I will hedge up her path with thorns;…
Pro 24:30-31 I went past the field of a slacker and by the vineyard…
Pro 22:5 Thorns and snares lie on the path of the perverse;…

but the path of the upright is a highway.

Those who live with integrity and diligence walk a clear and stable course. Their obedience to God’s wisdom removes many of the obstacles created by carelessness and sin, allowing steady progress in life.

Isa 26:7 The path of the righteous is level; You clear a straight path…
Isa 35:8 And there will be a highway called the Way of Holiness.…
Pro 3:6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths…

A wise son brings joy to his father,

Wisdom is shown in a life ordered by the fear of the Lord, obedience, and sound judgment. In Israel’s family-centered society, a son’s conduct affected both his household’s honor and its standing within the community. His faithful choices brought genuine joy to his father and reflected the blessings of living under God’s instruction.

Pro 10:1 The proverbs of Solomon: A wise son brings joy…
Pro 23:24 The father of a righteous man will greatly rejoice…
Pro 29:3 A man who loves wisdom brings joy to his father,…

but a foolish man despises his mother.

Foolishness is moral rebellion expressed through contempt for God’s ways and disregard for parental authority. A man who rejects his mother’s instruction brings grief and shame upon the household. Such dishonor violates the duty God gave children to honor their parents and reveals a heart resistant to rightful authority.

Pro 30:17 As for the eye that mocks a father and scorns obedience…
Pro 17:25 A foolish son brings grief to his father…
Pro 19:26 He who assaults his father or evicts his mother…

Folly is joy to one who lacks judgment,

Those without wisdom may delight in sinful and reckless choices because they do not see their consequences. What appears enjoyable for a moment reveals a heart unwilling to receive God’s instruction.

Pro 10:23 The fool delights in shameful conduct, but…
Pro 1:22 “How long, O simple ones, will you love your simple ways?”…
Ecc 7:4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning…

but a man of understanding walks a straight path.

A discerning person orders his life by what is right, choosing honesty, self-control, and obedience to God. His path is steady because it is directed by wisdom rather than impulse.

Pro 3:6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths…
Pro 4:11 I will guide you in the way of wisdom; I will lead you…
Pro 11:5 The righteousness of the blameless directs their path,…

Plans fail for lack of counsel,

Leaders in Israel and the surrounding nations commonly consulted elders, military officers, and trusted advisers before acting. Rehoboam’s refusal to heed the counsel of experienced elders led to a division in the kingdom. Plans formed in isolation often overlook dangers, consequences, and wiser alternatives.

Pro 20:18 Set plans by consultation, and wage war…
Pro 19:20 Listen to counsel and accept discipline…

but with many advisers they succeed.

Sound counsel from several trustworthy people brings broader understanding and helps establish wise action. Joseph’s counsel enabled Pharaoh to prepare Egypt for famine, showing how prudent guidance can preserve a nation. Success does not come merely from numbers, but from receiving wise counsel and acting with humility before God.

Pro 11:14 For lack of guidance, a nation falls,…
Pro 24:6 Only with sound guidance should you wage war,…

A man takes joy in a fitting reply—

A wise and appropriate answer brings satisfaction to both the speaker and the hearer. Such speech reflects discernment, truthfulness, and concern for the good of others. It can settle disputes, give needed counsel, and strengthen relationships.

Pro 25:11 A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold…
Pro 24:26 An honest answer given is like a kiss on the lips.
Job 6:25 How painful are honest words! But what does your argument…

and how good is a timely word!

Words spoken at the right moment carry particular weight. In the close daily life of Israel’s families and communities, a well-timed response could encourage the discouraged, correct wrongdoing, avert conflict, or bring clarity in uncertainty. Good speech requires not only wisdom about what to say but judgment about when to say it.

Isa 50:4 The Lord GOD has given Me the tongue of discipleship,…
Col 4:6 Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt…
Ecc 3:7 a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent…

The path of life leads upward for the wise,

Wisdom directs a person toward God, obedience, and life. In Israel’s wisdom tradition, the fear of the Lord shaped moral judgment and separated the faithful from the destructive course of sin and folly. The upward path pictures movement toward God and the life He gives.

Psa 16:11 You have made known to me the path of life;…
Pro 4:18 The path of the righteous is like the first gleam…
Php 3:14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize…

that he may avoid going down to Sheol.

Sheol was understood as the realm of the dead, associated with darkness, silence, and separation from the activities of earthly life. The contrast between upward and downward presents the consequences of moral choices: wisdom leads toward life, while folly leads to death. In Christ, the promise of life is fulfilled through His victory over death and the grave.

Job 33:28 He redeemed my soul from going down to the Pit,…
Psa 49:15 But God will redeem my life from Sheol,…
Psa 30:3 O LORD, You pulled me up from Sheol; You spared…

The LORD tears down the house of the proud,

God judges those who build their lives, families, and security on self-exaltation rather than submission to Him. Human power and achievement cannot withstand His sovereignty, as seen in the downfall of proud rulers and nations throughout Scripture. Pride ultimately brings ruin because it rejects the rightful rule of God.

Pro 16:18 Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit…
Pro 18:12 Before his downfall a man’s heart is proud,…
Psa 52:5 Surely God will bring you down to everlasting ruin;…

but He protects the boundaries of the widow.

Widows were especially vulnerable in Israel, often dependent on inherited land for their livelihood. God guards their rightful inheritance and property boundaries, which secured their land and means of sustenance, and acts against those who would exploit or dispossess them. His care for the widow reveals His justice toward the weak and His opposition to those who abuse power.

Pro 23:10-11 Do not move an ancient boundary stone…
Deu 10:18 He executes justice for the fatherless and widow,…
Psa 146:9 The LORD protects foreigners; He sustains the fatherless…

The LORD detests the thoughts of the wicked,

God sees the inward purposes behind human conduct, not merely outward appearances. Wickedness begins in a heart set against His will, producing plans marked by pride, deceit, injustice, and harm. Such thoughts stand under God’s judgment because they reject His holy standard.

Pro 6:16-19 There are six things that the LORD hates,…
Gen 6:5 Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man…
Jer 17:10 I, the LORD, search the heart; I examine the mind…

but the words of the pure are pleasant to Him.

Those whose hearts are devoted to God speak with truth, integrity, and grace. Their words reflect a life ordered by His will and bring Him pleasure. God values speech that proceeds from a clean heart and serves what is good.

Psa 19:14 May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart…
Psa 141:2 May my prayer be set before You like incense;…
Col 4:6 Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt…

He who is greedy for unjust gain

He who is greedy for unjust gain pursues wealth without regard for God’s standards of honesty and justice, whether through theft, extortion, deceit, or exploitation. Such gain may appear profitable for a time, but it is obtained at the cost of righteousness.

Pro 1:19 Such is the fate of all who are greedy, whose unjust gain…
Ezk 22:27 Her officials within her are like wolves tearing their prey…
Mic 2:2 They covet fields and seize them; they take away houses.…

brings trouble on his household,

Sin rarely remains confined to one person. In Israel’s family-centered society, a man’s corruption could bring financial loss, disgrace, conflict, and judgment upon those under his care.

Hab 2:9 Woe to him who builds his house by unjust gain,…
Pro 11:29 He who brings trouble on his house will inherit the wind…
Jer 22:13 Woe to him who builds his palace by unrighteousness,…

but he who hates bribes

“He who hates bribes” refuses dishonest gain that corrupts judgment and exploits others. Rejecting bribery demonstrates reverence for God, protects the innocent, and upholds justice.

Deu 16:19 Do not deny justice or show partiality…
Psa 15:5 who lends his money without interest and refuses a bribe…
Deu 10:17 For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords,…

will live.

Integrity preserves a person from the ruin that follows dishonest gain. God’s way leads to enduring life and security, while corruption ultimately brings destruction.

Pro 28:16 A leader who lacks judgment is also a great oppressor,…
Pro 11:19 Genuine righteousness leads to life, but the pursuit…
Pro 12:28 There is life in the path of righteousness, but…

The heart of the righteous ponders how to answer,

The righteous do not treat words casually. Their inner life is shaped by the fear of the Lord, leading them to consider what is true, fitting, and beneficial before speaking. Proverbs repeatedly connects wisdom with restraint, recognizing that careful speech reflects sound judgment and a life ordered by God.

Pro 18:13 He who answers a matter before he hears it—…
Pro 16:23 The heart of the wise man instructs his mouth…
Jas 1:19 My beloved brothers, understand this: Be quick to listen…

but the mouth of the wicked blurts out evil.

The wicked speak from hearts resistant to God’s ways. Their words erupt without restraint and bring harm, falsehood, contention, or corruption. The contrast shows that speech reveals moral character: wise restraint marks the righteous, while reckless evil exposes the condition of the wicked.

Pro 29:11 A fool vents all his anger, but a wise man holds it back.
Pro 10:19 When words are many, sin is unavoidable,…
Psa 52:2 Your tongue devises destruction like a sharpened razor,…

The LORD is far from the wicked,

Sin separates the wicked from God’s favor and fellowship. Those who persist in rebellion against His commands cannot expect His approval or blessing. Israel’s history showed this reality when disobedience brought judgment, defeat, and exile from the land God had given them.

Psa 34:16 But the face of the LORD is against those who do evil,…
Isa 59:2 But your iniquities have built barriers…
Jhn 9:31 We know that God does not listen to sinners…

but He hears the prayer of the righteous.

God receives the prayers of those who fear Him, trust His word, and seek to walk in obedience. Their righteousness is not sinless perfection but a faithful relationship with God, ultimately made possible through Jesus Christ, who brings believers near to God.

Psa 34:15 The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous…
Jas 5:16 Therefore confess your sins to each other…
1Jn 3:22 and we will receive from Him whatever we ask,…

The light of the eyes cheers the heart,

A bright and healthy countenance often reveals inward joy and brings encouragement to others. In Israel’s wisdom tradition, outward appearance could reflect the condition of the heart, and a person marked by gladness could strengthen those around him.

Psa 4:6-7 Many ask, “Who can show us the good?” Shine the light…
Ecc 11:7 Light is sweet, and it pleases the eyes to see the sun.
Psa 19:8 The precepts of the LORD are right, bringing joy…

and good news nourishes the bones.

Welcome reports of peace, deliverance, provision, or restored relationships renew a person deeply. The bones represent physical strength and vitality, so good news—gospel, meaning “good news”—is pictured as restoring vigor to the whole person.

Pro 17:22 A joyful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit…
Pro 25:25 Like cold water to a weary soul is good news…
Pro 16:24 Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul…

He who listens to life-giving reproof

He who listens to life-giving, nurturing reproof receives correction that preserves him from foolish and destructive paths. God uses rebuke to expose sin, redirect conduct, and cultivate the humility necessary for righteous living. Such discipline evidences God’s care, leading not merely to outward improvement but to spiritual and moral vitality and steadfast obedience.

Pro 10:17 Whoever heeds instruction is on the path to life,…
Pro 13:18 Poverty and shame come to him who ignores discipline…
Pro 25:12 Like an earring of gold or an ornament of fine gold…

will dwell among the wise.

Those who accept correction become fit companions of the wise. In Israel, wisdom was rooted in reverence for the Lord and expressed in just, disciplined, and faithful living. A teachable person benefits from the counsel of others and contributes to a community marked by maturity, truth, and godly judgment.

Pro 13:20 He who walks with the wise will become wise,…
Pro 9:9 Instruct a wise man, and he will be wiser still;…
Pro 1:5 let the wise listen and gain instruction,…

He who ignores discipline despises himself,

Discipline provides needed correction for conduct, character, and understanding. Refusing it leaves a person committed to harmful paths and unwilling to learn from God-given instruction. Such rejection is self-destructive because it resists the wisdom that preserves life and promotes righteousness.

Job 5:17 Blessed indeed is the man whom God corrects; …
Pro 3:11-12 My son, do not reject the discipline of the LORD,…
Pro 12:1 Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge,…

but whoever heeds correction gains understanding.
