1When it was decided [that] we would sail for Italy, Paul and some other prisoners were handed over to a centurion named Julius, [who belonged to the] Augustan Regiment. 1Ὡς δὲ ἐκρίθη τοῦ ἀποπλεῖν ἡμᾶς εἰς τὴν Ἰταλίαν παρεδίδουν τόν τε Παῦλον καί τινας ἑτέρους δεσμώτας ἑκατοντάρχῃ ὀνόματι Ἰουλίῳ σπείρης Σεβαστῆς
2We boarded an Adramyttian ship about to sail for ports along [the coast of] Asia, [and] we put out to sea. Aristarchus, a Macedonian from Thessalonica, was with us. 2ἐπιβάντες δὲ πλοίῳ Ἀδραμυττηνῷ μέλλοντι πλεῖν εἰς τοὺς κατὰ τὴν Ἀσίαν τόπους ἀνήχθημεν ὄντος σὺν ἡμῖν Ἀριστάρχου Μακεδόνος Θεσσαλονικέως
3The next [day] we landed at Sidon, and Julius treated Paul with consideration, allowing [him] to visit his friends [and] receive [their] care. 3Τῇ τε ἑτέρᾳ κατήχθημεν εἰς Σιδῶνα φιλανθρώπως τε ὁ Ἰούλιος τῷ Παύλῳ χρησάμενος ἐπέτρεψεν πρὸς τοὺς φίλους πορευθέντι ἐπιμελείας τυχεῖν
4[After] putting out from there, we sailed to the lee of Cyprus because the winds were against us. 4κἀκεῖθεν ἀναχθέντες ὑπεπλεύσαμεν τὴν Κύπρον διὰ τὸ τοὺς ἀνέμους εἶναι ἐναντίους
5And [when] we had sailed across the open sea off the coast of Cilicia and Pamphylia, we came to Myra in Lycia. 5τό τε πέλαγος τὸ κατὰ τὴν Κιλικίαν καὶ Παμφυλίαν διαπλεύσαντες κατήλθομεν* εἰς Μύρα* τῆς Λυκίας
6There the centurion found an Alexandrian ship sailing for Italy, [and] he put us on [board]. 6Κἀκεῖ εὑρὼν ὁ ἑκατοντάρχης πλοῖον Ἀλεξανδρῖνον πλέον εἰς τὴν Ἰταλίαν ἐνεβίβασεν ἡμᾶς εἰς αὐτό
7[After] sailing slowly for many days, we arrived off Cnidus. [When] the wind impeded us, we sailed to the lee of Crete, opposite Salmone. 7Ἐν ἱκαναῖς δὲ ἡμέραις βραδυπλοοῦντες καὶ μόλις γενόμενοι κατὰ τὴν Κνίδον μὴ προσεῶντος ἡμᾶς τοῦ ἀνέμου ὑπεπλεύσαμεν τὴν Κρήτην κατὰ Σαλμώνην
8[After] we had moved along the coast with difficulty, we came to a place called Fair Havens, near [the] town of Lasea. 8μόλις τε παραλεγόμενοι αὐτὴν ἤλθομεν εἰς τόπον τινὰ καλούμενον Καλοὺς Λιμένας ᾧ ἐγγὺς ἦν πόλις Λασαία
9By now much time had passed, and the voyage had already become dangerous because it was after the Fast. [So] Paul advised [them], 9Ἱκανοῦ δὲ χρόνου διαγενομένου καὶ ὄντος ἤδη ἐπισφαλοῦς τοῦ πλοὸς διὰ τὸ καὶ τὴν Νηστείαν ἤδη παρεληλυθέναι παρῄνει ὁ Παῦλος
10“Men, I can see that [our] voyage will be [filled] with disaster and great loss, not only to ship and cargo, but to our [own] lives as well.” 10λέγων αὐτοῖς Ἄνδρες θεωρῶ ὅτι μετὰ ὕβρεως καὶ πολλῆς ζημίας οὐ μόνον τοῦ φορτίου καὶ τοῦ πλοίου ἀλλὰ καὶ τῶν ψυχῶν ἡμῶν μέλλειν ἔσεσθαι τὸν πλοῦν
11But contrary to Paul’s advice, the centurion was persuaded by the pilot and the owner of the ship. 11Ὁ δὲ ἑκατοντάρχης τῷ κυβερνήτῃ καὶ τῷ ναυκλήρῳ μᾶλλον ἐπείθετο ἢ τοῖς ὑπὸ Παύλου λεγομένοις
12Since the harbor was unsuitable to winter in, the majority decided to sail on, if somehow they could reach Phoenix to winter [there]. [Phoenix was] a harbor in Crete facing [both] southwest and northwest. 12ἀνευθέτου δὲ τοῦ λιμένος ὑπάρχοντος πρὸς παραχειμασίαν οἱ πλείονες ἔθεντο βουλὴν ἀναχθῆναι ἐκεῖθεν εἴ πως δύναιντο καταντήσαντες εἰς Φοίνικα παραχειμάσαι λιμένα τῆς Κρήτης βλέποντα κατὰ λίβα καὶ κατὰ χῶρον
13[When] a {gentle} south wind began to blow, they thought they had [their] opportunity. [So] they weighed [anchor] [and] sailed along, hugging {the coast} of Crete. 13Ὑποπνεύσαντος δὲ νότου δόξαντες τῆς προθέσεως κεκρατηκέναι ἄραντες ἆσσον παρελέγοντο τὴν Κρήτην
14But [it was] not long [before] a cyclone called the Northeaster swept down across [the island]. 14μετ’ οὐ πολὺ δὲ ἔβαλεν κατ’ αὐτῆς ἄνεμος τυφωνικὸς ὁ καλούμενος Εὐρακύλων
15Unable to head into the wind, the ship was caught up. [So] we gave way [and] let ourselves be driven along. 15συναρπασθέντος δὲ τοῦ πλοίου καὶ μὴ δυναμένου ἀντοφθαλμεῖν τῷ ἀνέμῳ ἐπιδόντες ἐφερόμεθα
16Passing to the lee of a small island called Cauda, we barely managed to secure the lifeboat. 16Νησίον δέ τι ὑποδραμόντες καλούμενον Καῦδα ἰσχύσαμεν μόλις περικρατεῖς γενέσθαι τῆς σκάφης
17After hoisting it up, [the crew] used ropes to undergird the ship. Fearing they would run aground on the sandbars of Syrtis, they lowered the sea anchor [and] were driven along. 17ἣν ἄραντες βοηθείαις ἐχρῶντο ὑποζωννύντες τὸ πλοῖον φοβούμενοί τε μὴ εἰς τὴν Σύρτιν ἐκπέσωσιν χαλάσαντες τὸ σκεῦος οὕτως ἐφέροντο
18We were tossed so violently [that] the next [day] [the men] began to jettison the cargo. 18Σφοδρῶς δὲ χειμαζομένων ἡμῶν τῇ ἑξῆς ἐκβολὴν ἐποιοῦντο
19On the third [day], they threw the ship’s tackle {overboard} with [their] own hands. 19καὶ τῇ τρίτῃ αὐτόχειρες τὴν σκευὴν τοῦ πλοίου ἔρριψαν*
20[When] neither sun nor stars appeared for many days and [the great] storm continued to batter us, we abandoned all hope of being saved. 20μήτε δὲ ἡλίου μήτε ἄστρων ἐπιφαινόντων ἐπὶ πλείονας ἡμέρας χειμῶνός τε οὐκ ὀλίγου ἐπικειμένου λοιπὸν περιῃρεῖτο ἐλπὶς πᾶσα τοῦ σῴζεσθαι ἡμᾶς
21[After] [the men] had gone a long time without food, Paul stood up among them [and] said, “Men, you should have followed my advice not to sail from Crete. Then [you would have averted] this disaster and loss. 21Πολλῆς τε ἀσιτίας ὑπαρχούσης τότε σταθεὶς ὁ Παῦλος ἐν μέσῳ αὐτῶν εἶπεν Ἔδει μέν ὦ ἄνδρες πειθαρχήσαντάς μοι μὴ ἀνάγεσθαι ἀπὸ τῆς Κρήτης κερδῆσαί τε τὴν ὕβριν ταύτην καὶ τὴν ζημίαν
22[But] now I urge you to keep up your courage, because you will not experience [any] loss of life, but only of the ship. 22καὶ τὰ νῦν παραινῶ ὑμᾶς εὐθυμεῖν ἀποβολὴ γὰρ ψυχῆς οὐδεμία ἔσται ἐξ ὑμῶν πλὴν τοῦ πλοίου
23[Just last] night an angel of God, whose I am and whom I serve, stood beside me 23παρέστη γάρ μοι ταύτῃ τῇ νυκτὶ τοῦ Θεοῦ οὗ εἰμι [ἐγώ] ᾧ καὶ λατρεύω ἄγγελος
24[and] said, ‘{Do} not be afraid, Paul; you must stand before Caesar. And look, God has granted you [the lives of] all who sail with you.’ 24λέγων Μὴ φοβοῦ Παῦλε Καίσαρί σε δεῖ παραστῆναι καὶ ἰδοὺ κεχάρισταί σοι ὁ Θεὸς πάντας τοὺς πλέοντας μετὰ σοῦ
25So take courage, men, for I believe God that it will happen just as He told me. 25Διὸ εὐθυμεῖτε ἄνδρες πιστεύω γὰρ τῷ Θεῷ ὅτι οὕτως ἔσται καθ’ ὃν τρόπον λελάληταί μοι
26However, we must run aground on some island.” 26εἰς νῆσον δέ τινα δεῖ ἡμᾶς ἐκπεσεῖν
27[On] the fourteenth night we were still being driven across the Adriatic Sea. About midnight the sailors sensed they were approaching land. 27Ὡς δὲ τεσσαρεσκαιδεκάτη νὺξ ἐγένετο διαφερομένων ἡμῶν ἐν τῷ Ἀδρίᾳ κατὰ μέσον τῆς νυκτὸς ὑπενόουν οἱ ναῦται προσάγειν τινὰ αὐτοῖς χώραν
28They took soundings [and] found that [the water] [was] twenty fathoms [deep]. Going a little farther, they took another set of soundings that read fifteen fathoms. 28καὶ βολίσαντες εὗρον ὀργυιὰς εἴκοσι βραχὺ δὲ διαστήσαντες καὶ πάλιν βολίσαντες εὗρον ὀργυιὰς δεκαπέντε
29Fearing that we would run aground on [the] rocks, they dropped four anchors from [the] stern [and] prayed for daybreak. 29φοβούμενοί τε μή που κατὰ τραχεῖς τόπους ἐκπέσωμεν ἐκ πρύμνης ῥίψαντες ἀγκύρας τέσσαρας ηὔχοντο ἡμέραν γενέσθαι
30Meanwhile, the sailors attempted to escape from the ship. Pretending to lower anchors from [the] bow, they let the lifeboat {down} into the sea. 30Τῶν δὲ ναυτῶν ζητούντων φυγεῖν ἐκ τοῦ πλοίου καὶ χαλασάντων τὴν σκάφην εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν προφάσει ὡς ἐκ πρῴρης ἀγκύρας μελλόντων ἐκτείνειν
31[But] Paul said to the centurion and the soldiers, “Unless these [men] remain with the ship, you cannot be saved.” 31εἶπεν ὁ Παῦλος τῷ ἑκατοντάρχῃ καὶ τοῖς στρατιώταις Ἐὰν μὴ οὗτοι μείνωσιν ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ ὑμεῖς σωθῆναι οὐ δύνασθε
32[So] the soldiers cut the ropes to the lifeboat and set it adrift. 32τότε ἀπέκοψαν οἱ στρατιῶται τὰ σχοινία τῆς σκάφης καὶ εἴασαν αὐτὴν ἐκπεσεῖν
33Right up to daybreak, Paul kept urging them all to eat: “Today [is your] fourteenth day in constant suspense, without taking any food. 33Ἄχρι δὲ οὗ ἡμέρα ἤμελλεν γίνεσθαι παρεκάλει ὁ Παῦλος ἅπαντας μεταλαβεῖν τροφῆς λέγων Τεσσαρεσκαιδεκάτην σήμερον ἡμέραν προσδοκῶντες ἄσιτοι διατελεῖτε μηθὲν προσλαβόμενοι
34So for your [own] preservation, I urge you to eat something, because not a single hair of your head will be lost.” 34διὸ παρακαλῶ ὑμᾶς μεταλαβεῖν τροφῆς τοῦτο γὰρ πρὸς τῆς ὑμετέρας σωτηρίας ὑπάρχει οὐδενὸς γὰρ ὑμῶν θρὶξ ἀπὸ τῆς κεφαλῆς ἀπολεῖται
35[After] he had said this, [Paul] took bread [and] gave thanks to God in front of them all. Then he broke [it] [and] began to eat. 35Εἴπας δὲ ταῦτα καὶ λαβὼν ἄρτον εὐχαρίστησεν τῷ Θεῷ ἐνώπιον πάντων καὶ κλάσας ἤρξατο ἐσθίειν
36They were all encouraged and took [some] food themselves. 36εὔθυμοι δὲ γενόμενοι πάντες καὶ αὐτοὶ προσελάβοντο τροφῆς
37Altogether there were 276 {} of us on [board]. 37ἤμεθα δὲ αἱ πᾶσαι ψυχαὶ ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ διακόσιαι ἑβδομήκοντα ἕξ
38[After] [the men] had eaten their fill, they lightened the ship by throwing the grain into the sea. 38κορεσθέντες δὲ τροφῆς ἐκούφιζον τὸ πλοῖον ἐκβαλλόμενοι τὸν σῖτον εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν
39When daylight came, they did not recognize the land, but they sighted a bay with a sandy beach, where they decided to run the ship {aground} if they could. 39Ὅτε δὲ ἡμέρα ἐγένετο τὴν γῆν οὐκ ἐπεγίνωσκον κόλπον δέ τινα κατενόουν ἔχοντα αἰγιαλὸν εἰς ὃν ἐβουλεύοντο εἰ δύναιντο ἐξῶσαι τὸ πλοῖον
40Cutting away the anchors, they left [them] in the sea as they loosened the ropes [that held] the rudders. Then they hoisted the foresail to the [wind] [and] made for the beach. 40καὶ τὰς ἀγκύρας περιελόντες εἴων εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν ἅμα ἀνέντες τὰς ζευκτηρίας τῶν πηδαλίων καὶ ἐπάραντες τὸν ἀρτέμωνα τῇ πνεούσῃ κατεῖχον εἰς τὸν αἰγιαλόν
41But the vessel struck a sandbar [and] ran aground. The bow stuck fast [and] would not move, and the stern was being tattered by the pounding of the waves. 41περιπεσόντες δὲ εἰς τόπον διθάλασσον ἐπέκειλαν τὴν ναῦν καὶ ἡ μὲν πρῷρα ἐρείσασα ἔμεινεν ἀσάλευτος ἡ δὲ πρύμνα ἐλύετο ὑπὸ τῆς βίας [τῶν κυμάτων]
42The soldiers planned to kill the prisoners so none of them could swim to freedom. 42Τῶν δὲ στρατιωτῶν βουλὴ ἐγένετο ἵνα τοὺς δεσμώτας ἀποκτείνωσιν μή τις ἐκκολυμβήσας διαφύγῃ
43But the centurion, wanting to spare Paul’s [ life ], thwarted their plan. He commanded those who could swim to jump overboard first [and] get to land. 43ὁ δὲ ἑκατοντάρχης βουλόμενος διασῶσαι τὸν Παῦλον ἐκώλυσεν αὐτοὺς τοῦ βουλήματος ἐκέλευσέν τε τοὺς δυναμένους κολυμβᾶν ἀπορίψαντας πρώτους ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν ἐξιέναι
44The rest [were to follow] on planks and various parts of the ship. In this way everyone was brought safely to land. 44καὶ τοὺς λοιποὺς οὓς μὲν ἐπὶ σανίσιν οὓς δὲ ἐπί τινων τῶν ἀπὸ τοῦ πλοίου καὶ οὕτως ἐγένετο πάντας διασωθῆναι ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν
