1At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus 1Ἐν ἐκείνῳ τῷ καιρῷ ἤκουσεν Ἡρῴδης ὁ τετραάρχης τὴν ἀκοὴν Ἰησοῦ
2and said to his servants, “This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead! This is why miraculous powers are at work in him.” 2καὶ εἶπεν τοῖς παισὶν αὐτοῦ Οὗτός ἐστιν Ἰωάννης ὁ Βαπτιστής αὐτὸς ἠγέρθη ἀπὸ τῶν νεκρῶν καὶ διὰ τοῦτο αἱ δυνάμεις ἐνεργοῦσιν ἐν αὐτῷ
3[Now] Herod had arrested John [and] bound him and put [him] in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, 3Ὁ γὰρ Ἡρῴδης κρατήσας τὸν Ἰωάνην ἔδησεν ‹αὐτὸν› καὶ ἐν φυλακῇ ἀπέθετο διὰ Ἡρῳδιάδα τὴν γυναῖκα Φιλίππου τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ
4because John had been telling him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.” 4ἔλεγεν γὰρ «ὁ Ἰωάννης» αὐτῷ Οὐκ ἔξεστίν σοι ἔχειν αὐτήν
5Although [Herod] wanted to kill [John], he was afraid of the people, because they considered him a prophet. 5καὶ θέλων αὐτὸν ἀποκτεῖναι ἐφοβήθη τὸν ὄχλον ὅτι ὡς προφήτην αὐτὸν εἶχον
6On Herod’s birthday, however, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod 6Γενεσίοις δὲ γενομένοις τοῦ Ἡρῴδου ὠρχήσατο ἡ θυγάτηρ τῆς Ἡρῳδιάδος ἐν τῷ μέσῳ καὶ ἤρεσεν τῷ Ἡρῴδῃ
7so much that he promised with an oath to give to her whatever she asked. 7ὅθεν μεθ’ ὅρκου ὡμολόγησεν αὐτῇ δοῦναι ὃ ἐὰν αἰτήσηται
8Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.” 8Ἡ δὲ προβιβασθεῖσα ὑπὸ τῆς μητρὸς αὐτῆς Δός μοι φησίν Ὧδε ἐπὶ πίνακι τὴν κεφαλὴν Ἰωάννου τοῦ Βαπτιστοῦ
9The king was grieved, but because of [his] oaths and his guests, he ordered that [her wish] be granted 9Καὶ λυπηθεὶς ὁ βασιλεὺς διὰ τοὺς ὅρκους καὶ τοὺς συνανακειμένους ἐκέλευσεν δοθῆναι
10and sent {to have} John beheaded in the prison. 10καὶ πέμψας ἀπεκεφάλισεν ‹τὸν› Ἰωάννην ἐν τῇ φυλακῇ
11[John’s] head was brought in on a platter and presented to the girl, [who] carried [it] to her mother. 11Καὶ ἠνέχθη ἡ κεφαλὴ αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ πίνακι καὶ ἐδόθη τῷ κορασίῳ καὶ ἤνεγκεν τῇ μητρὶ αὐτῆς
12Then [John’s] disciples came [and] took [his] body and buried it. And they went [and] informed Jesus. 12καὶ προσελθόντες οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ἦραν τὸ πτῶμα καὶ ἔθαψαν αὐτόν καὶ ἐλθόντες ἀπήγγειλαν τῷ Ἰησοῦ
13When Jesus heard [ about John ], He withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. But the crowds found out [and] followed Him on foot from the towns. 13Ἀκούσας δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἀνεχώρησεν ἐκεῖθεν ἐν πλοίῳ εἰς ἔρημον τόπον κατ’ ἰδίαν καὶ ἀκούσαντες οἱ ὄχλοι ἠκολούθησαν αὐτῷ πεζῇ ἀπὸ τῶν πόλεων
14When He stepped ashore [and] saw a large crowd, He had compassion on them and healed their sick. 14Καὶ ἐξελθὼν εἶδεν πολὺν ὄχλον καὶ ἐσπλαγχνίσθη ἐπ’ αὐτοῖς καὶ ἐθεράπευσεν τοὺς ἀρρώστους αὐτῶν
15When evening came, the disciples came to Him [and] said, “This is a desolate place, and the hour is already late. Dismiss the crowds, so they can go to the villages [and] buy food for themselves.” 15Ὀψίας δὲ γενομένης προσῆλθον αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ λέγοντες Ἔρημός ἐστιν ὁ τόπος καὶ ἡ ὥρα ἤδη παρῆλθεν ἀπόλυσον 〈οὖν〉 τοὺς ὄχλους ἵνα ἀπελθόντες εἰς τὰς κώμας ἀγοράσωσιν ἑαυτοῖς βρώματα
16“They do not need to go away,” Jesus replied. “You give them [something] to eat.” 16Ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Οὐ χρείαν ἔχουσιν ἀπελθεῖν δότε αὐτοῖς ὑμεῖς φαγεῖν
17“We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered. 17Οἱ δὲ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ Οὐκ ἔχομεν ὧδε εἰ μὴ πέντε ἄρτους καὶ δύο ἰχθύας
18“Bring them here to Me,” [Jesus] said. 18Ὁ δὲ εἶπεν Φέρετέ μοι ὧδε αὐτούς
19And He instructed the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish [and] looking up to heaven, He spoke a blessing. Then He broke the loaves [and] gave [them] to the disciples, and the disciples [gave them] to the people. 19καὶ κελεύσας τοὺς ὄχλους ἀνακλιθῆναι ἐπὶ τοῦ χόρτου λαβὼν τοὺς πέντε ἄρτους καὶ τοὺς δύο ἰχθύας ἀναβλέψας εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν εὐλόγησεν καὶ κλάσας ἔδωκεν τοῖς μαθηταῖς τοὺς ἄρτους οἱ δὲ μαθηταὶ τοῖς ὄχλοις
20They all ate and were satisfied, and [the disciples] picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 20Καὶ ἔφαγον πάντες καὶ ἐχορτάσθησαν καὶ ἦραν τὸ περισσεῦον τῶν κλασμάτων δώδεκα κοφίνους πλήρεις
21About five thousand men were fed, in addition to women and children. 21οἱ δὲ ἐσθίοντες ἦσαν ἄνδρες ὡσεὶ πεντακισχίλιοι χωρὶς γυναικῶν καὶ παιδίων
22Immediately [Jesus] made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of Him to the other side, while He dismissed the crowds. 22Καὶ εὐθέως ἠνάγκασεν τοὺς μαθητὰς ἐμβῆναι εἰς τὸ πλοῖον καὶ προάγειν αὐτὸν εἰς τὸ πέραν ἕως οὗ ἀπολύσῃ τοὺς ὄχλους
23After He had sent [them] away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. When evening came, He was there alone, 23καὶ ἀπολύσας τοὺς ὄχλους ἀνέβη εἰς τὸ ὄρος κατ’ ἰδίαν προσεύξασθαι ὀψίας δὲ γενομένης μόνος ἦν ἐκεῖ
24but the boat was already far from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it. 24τὸ δὲ πλοῖον ἤδη σταδίους πολλοὺς ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς ἀπεῖχεν βασανιζόμενον ὑπὸ τῶν κυμάτων ἦν γὰρ ἐναντίος ὁ ἄνεμος
25During the fourth watch of the night, [Jesus] went out to them, walking on the sea. 25Τετάρτῃ δὲ φυλακῇ τῆς νυκτὸς ἦλθεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς περιπατῶν ἐπὶ τὴν θάλασσαν
26When the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost!” they said, and cried out in fear. 26οἱ δὲ μαθηταὶ ἰδόντες αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τῆς θαλάσσης περιπατοῦντα ἐταράχθησαν λέγοντες ὅτι Φάντασμά ἐστιν καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ φόβου ἔκραξαν
27But Jesus immediately spoke up: “Take courage! It is I. [Do] not be afraid.” 27Εὐθὺς δὲ ἐλάλησεν «ὁ Ἰησοῦς» αὐτοῖς λέγων Θαρσεῖτε ἐγώ εἰμι μὴ φοβεῖσθε
28“Lord, if [it] is You,” Peter replied, “command me to come to You on the water.” 28Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ αὐτῷ ὁ Πέτρος εἶπεν Κύριε εἰ σὺ εἶ κέλευσόν με ἐλθεῖν πρὸς σὲ ἐπὶ τὰ ὕδατα
29“Come ,” said [Jesus]. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water, and came toward Jesus. 29Ὁ δὲ εἶπεν Ἐλθέ Καὶ καταβὰς ἀπὸ τοῦ πλοίου [ὁ] Πέτρος περιεπάτησεν ἐπὶ τὰ ὕδατα καὶ ἦλθεν πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν
30But when he saw the strength of the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” 30βλέπων δὲ τὸν ἄνεμον ‹ἰσχυρὸν› ἐφοβήθη καὶ ἀρξάμενος καταποντίζεσθαι ἔκραξεν λέγων Κύριε σῶσόν με
31Immediately Jesus reached out [His] hand [and] took hold of [Peter]. “[You] of little faith,” He said, “why did you doubt?” 31Εὐθέως δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐκτείνας τὴν χεῖρα ἐπελάβετο αὐτοῦ καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ Ὀλιγόπιστε εἰς τί ἐδίστασας
32And when they had climbed back into the boat, the wind died down. 32Καὶ ἀναβάντων αὐτῶν εἰς τὸ πλοῖον ἐκόπασεν ὁ ἄνεμος
33Then those who [were] in the boat worshiped Him, saying, “Truly You are the Son of God!” 33οἱ δὲ ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ προσεκύνησαν αὐτῷ λέγοντες Ἀληθῶς Θεοῦ Υἱὸς εἶ
34When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret. 34Καὶ διαπεράσαντες ἦλθον ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν εἰς Γεννησαρέτ
35And when the men of that place recognized [Jesus], they sent word to all the surrounding region. [People] brought all the sick to Him, 35καὶ ἐπιγνόντες αὐτὸν οἱ ἄνδρες τοῦ τόπου ἐκείνου ἀπέστειλαν εἰς ὅλην τὴν περίχωρον ἐκείνην καὶ προσήνεγκαν αὐτῷ πάντας τοὺς κακῶς ἔχοντας
36and begged Him just to let them touch the fringe of His cloak. And all who touched [Him] were healed. 36καὶ παρεκάλουν αὐτὸν ἵνα μόνον ἅψωνται τοῦ κρασπέδου τοῦ ἱματίου αὐτοῦ καὶ ὅσοι ἥψαντο διεσώθησαν
