Daniel’s Vision of the Ram and the Goat

1  בִּשְׁנַ֣ת (In year) שָׁל֔וֹשׁ (three) לְמַלְכ֖וּת (of the reign) בֵּלְאשַׁצַּ֣ר (of Belshazzar) הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ (the king) חָז֞וֹן (a vision) נִרְאָ֤ה (appeared) אֵלַי֙ (to me) אֲנִ֣י (I) דָנִיֵּ֔אל (Daniel), אַחֲרֵ֛י (after) הַנִּרְאָ֥ה (that which had appeared) אֵלַ֖י (to me) בַּתְּחִלָּֽה׃ (at the first). 2  וָֽאֶרְאֶה֮ (And I saw) בֶּחָזוֹן֒ (in the vision); וַיְהִי֙ (and it was), בִּרְאֹתִ֔י (in my looking), וַאֲנִי֙ (that I) בְּשׁוּשַׁ֣ן (was in Susa) הַבִּירָ֔ה (the citadel), אֲשֶׁ֖ר (which is) בְּעֵילָ֣ם (in Elam); הַמְּדִינָ֑ה (the province) וָאֶרְאֶה֙ (and I saw) בֶּֽחָז֔וֹן (in the vision), וַאֲנִ֥י (that I) הָיִ֖יתִי (was) עַל־ (by) אוּבַ֥ל (the River) אוּלָֽי׃ (Ulai).

3  וָאֶשָּׂ֤א (And I lifted up) עֵינַי֙ (my eyes), וָאֶרְאֶ֔ה (and looked), וְהִנֵּ֣ה׀ (and behold), אַ֣יִל (a ram) אֶחָ֗ד (one) עֹמֵ֛ד (was standing) לִפְנֵ֥י (at the face) הָאֻבָ֖ל (of the river) וְל֣וֹ (and unto it were) קְרָנָ֑יִם (two horns); וְהַקְּרָנַ֣יִם (and the two horns) גְּבֹה֗וֹת (were high); וְהָאַחַת֙ (and one was) גְּבֹהָ֣ה (higher) מִן־ (than) הַשֵּׁנִ֔ית (the second), וְהַ֨גְּבֹהָ֔ה (and the higher one) עֹלָ֖ה (came up) בָּאַחֲרֹנָֽה׃ (later). 4  רָאִ֣יתִי (I saw) אֶת־ (-) הָאַ֡יִל (the ram) מְנַגֵּחַ֩ (charging) יָ֨מָּה (to the west), וְצָפ֜וֹנָה (and to the north), וָנֶ֗גְבָּה (and to the south); וְכָל־ (and all) חַיּוֹת֙ (living creatures) לֹֽא־ (not) יַֽעַמְד֣וּ (could stand) לְפָנָ֔יו (before him) וְאֵ֥ין (and there was no one) מַצִּ֖יל (to deliver) מִיָּד֑וֹ (from his hand); וְעָשָׂ֥ה (and he did) כִרְצֹנ֖וֹ (according to his will), וְהִגְדִּֽיל׃ (and he became great).

5  וַאֲנִ֣י׀ (And I) הָיִ֣יתִי (was) מֵבִ֗ין (considering), וְהִנֵּ֤ה (and behold), צְפִיר־ (a male) הָֽעִזִּים֙ (of the goats) בָּ֤א (was coming) מִן־ (from) הַֽמַּעֲרָב֙ (the west) עַל־ (over) פְּנֵ֣י (the face) כָל־ (of all) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the earth), וְאֵ֥ין (and without) נוֹגֵ֖עַ (touching) בָּאָ֑רֶץ (on the ground); וְהַ֨צָּפִ֔יר (and the goat had) קֶ֥רֶן (a horn) חָז֖וּת (a conspicuous) בֵּ֥ין (between) עֵינָֽיו׃ (his eyes). 6  וַיָּבֹ֗א (And he came) עַד־ (to) הָאַ֙יִל֙ (the ram) בַּ֣עַל (owner) הַקְּרָנַ֔יִם (of the two horns), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (which) רָאִ֔יתִי (I had seen) עֹמֵ֖ד (standing) לִפְנֵ֣י (at the face) הָאֻבָ֑ל (of the river), וַיָּ֥רָץ (and he ran) אֵלָ֖יו (toward him) בַּחֲמַ֥ת (with the fury) כֹּחֽוֹ׃ (of his power). 7  וּרְאִיתִ֞יו (And I saw him) מַגִּ֣יעַ׀ (coming close) אֵ֣צֶל (beside) הָאַ֗יִל (the ram), וַיִּתְמַרְמַ֤ר (and he was enraged) אֵלָיו֙ (at him) וַיַּ֣ךְ (and he struck) אֶת־ (-) הָאַ֔יִל (the ram), וַיְשַׁבֵּר֙ (and broke) אֶת־ (-) שְׁתֵּ֣י (the two) קְרָנָ֔יו (of his horns), וְלֹא־ (and not) הָ֥יָה (was there) כֹ֛חַ (power) בָּאַ֖יִל (in the ram) לַעֲמֹ֣ד (to stand) לְפָנָ֑יו (before his face) וַיַּשְׁלִיכֵ֤הוּ (and he cast him down) אַ֙רְצָה֙ (to the ground), וַֽיִּרְמְסֵ֔הוּ (and trampled him) וְלֹא־ (no one) הָיָ֥ה (was there any) מַצִּ֛יל (to deliver) לָאַ֖יִל (the ram) מִיָּדֽוֹ׃ (from his hand).

8  וּצְפִ֥יר (And the male) הָעִזִּ֖ים (of the goats) הִגְדִּ֣יל (grew); עַד־ (as far as) מְאֹ֑ד (exceedingly) וּכְעָצְמ֗וֹ (and with his becoming mighty), נִשְׁבְּרָה֙ (was broken); הַקֶּ֣רֶן (the horn) הַגְּדוֹלָ֔ה (large) וַֽתַּעֲלֶ֜נָה (and came up) חָז֤וּת (conspicuous ones) אַרְבַּע֙ (four) תַּחְתֶּ֔יהָ (in place of it) לְאַרְבַּ֖ע (toward the four) רוּח֥וֹת (winds) הַשָּׁמָֽיִם׃ (of the heavens).

9  וּמִן־ (And from) הָאַחַ֣ת (the one) מֵהֶ֔ם (of them) יָצָ֥א (came forth) קֶֽרֶן־ (horn), אַחַ֖ת (one) מִצְּעִירָ֑ה (little) וַתִּגְדַּל־ (and it grew great) יֶ֛תֶר (exceedingly), אֶל־ (toward) הַנֶּ֥גֶב (the south), וְאֶל־ (and toward) הַמִּזְרָ֖ח (the east), וְאֶל־ (and toward) הַצֶּֽבִי׃ (the Beautiful Land). 10  וַתִּגְדַּ֖ל (And he grew), עַד־ (up to) צְבָ֣א (the host) הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם (of the heavens); וַתַּפֵּ֥ל (and he cast down) אַ֛רְצָה (to the ground), מִן־ (some of) הַצָּבָ֥א (the host) וּמִן־ (and some of) הַכּוֹכָבִ֖ים (the stars) וַֽתִּרְמְסֵֽם׃ (and he trampled them). 11  וְעַ֥ד (And to) שַֽׂר־ (the Prince) הַצָּבָ֖א (of the host), הִגְדִּ֑יל (he became great) וּמִמֶּ֙נּוּ֙ (and from Him) הֵרִים (was taken away), הַתָּמִ֔יד (the daily sacrifice) וְהֻשְׁלַ֖ךְ (and was cast down) מְכ֥וֹן (the place) מִקְדָּשֽׁוֹ׃ (of His sanctuary). 12  וְצָבָ֛א (And an army) תִּנָּתֵ֥ן (will be given over) עַל־ (along with) הַתָּמִ֖יד (the daily sacrifice) בְּפָ֑שַׁע (because of transgression), וְתַשְׁלֵ֤ךְ (and he will cast down) אֱמֶת֙ (truth) אַ֔רְצָה (to the ground); וְעָשְׂתָ֖ה (and he will act), וְהִצְלִֽיחָה׃ (and will prosper).

13  וָאֶשְׁמְעָ֥ה (And I heard) אֶֽחָד־ (one) קָד֖וֹשׁ (holy one) מְדַבֵּ֑ר (speaking), וַיֹּאמֶר֩ (said) אֶחָ֨ד (one) קָד֜וֹשׁ (holy one) לַפַּֽלְמוֹנִ֣י (to the one) הַֽמְדַבֵּ֗ר (who was speaking), עַד־ (Until) מָתַ֞י (when) הֶחָז֤וֹן (is the vision) הַתָּמִיד֙ (of the daily sacrifice) וְהַפֶּ֣שַׁע (and the transgression) שֹׁמֵ֔ם (of desolation), תֵּ֛ת (the giving over) וְקֹ֥דֶשׁ (of both the sanctuary) וְצָבָ֖א (and of the host) מִרְמָֽס׃ (to be trampled)?

14  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And he said) אֵלַ֔י (to me) עַ֚ד (Until) עֶ֣רֶב (evenings) בֹּ֔קֶר (and morning); אַלְפַּ֖יִם (two thousand) וּשְׁלֹ֣שׁ (and three) מֵא֑וֹת (hundred) וְנִצְדַּ֖ק (and will be made right) קֹֽדֶשׁ׃ (the sanctuary).

Gabriel Interprets Daniel’s Vision

15  וַיְהִ֗י (And it came to pass), בִּרְאֹתִ֛י (in my seeing) אֲנִ֥י (I) דָנִיֵּ֖אל (Daniel), אֶת־ (-) הֶחָז֑וֹן (the vision), וָאֲבַקְשָׁ֣ה (I sought) בִינָ֔ה (understanding), וְהִנֵּ֛ה (that behold), עֹמֵ֥ד (was standing) לְנֶגְדִּ֖י (before me) כְּמַרְאֵה־ (one having the appearance) גָֽבֶר׃ (of a man). 16  וָאֶשְׁמַ֥ע (And I heard) קוֹל־ (the voice) אָדָ֖ם (of a man) בֵּ֣ין (between) אוּלָ֑י (the Ulai), וַיִּקְרָא֙ (and he called out), וַיֹּאמַ֔ר (and said), גַּבְרִיאֵ֕ל (Gabriel), הָבֵ֥ן (give understanding) לְהַלָּ֖ז (to this one) אֶת־ (-) הַמַּרְאֶֽה׃ (of the vision).

17  וַיָּבֹא֙ (And he came) אֵ֣צֶל (alongside) עָמְדִ֔י (my station) וּבְבֹא֣וֹ (and at his coming), נִבְעַ֔תִּי (I was afraid), וָאֶפְּלָ֖ה (and fell) עַל־ (on) פָּנָ֑י (my face);

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (and he said) אֵלַי֙ (to me) הָבֵ֣ן (Understand), בֶּן־ (O son) אָדָ֔ם (of man), כִּ֖י (that) לְעֶת־ (regarding the time) קֵ֥ץ (of the end) הֶחָזֽוֹן׃ (is the vision).

18  וּבְדַבְּר֣וֹ (And at his speaking) עִמִּ֔י (with me) נִרְדַּ֥מְתִּי (I fell into a deep sleep) עַל־ (with) פָּנַ֖י (my face) אָ֑רְצָה (to the ground);

וַיִּ֨גַּע־ (and he touched) בִּ֔י (me) וַיַּֽעֲמִידֵ֖נִי (and stood me) עַל־ (on) עָמְדִֽי׃ (my station). 19  וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (And he said), הִנְנִ֣י (Behold, I) מוֹדִֽיעֲךָ֔ (I will make known to you) אֵ֥ת (-) אֲשֶׁר־ (what) יִהְיֶ֖ה (will come to be) בְּאַחֲרִ֣ית (at the latter end) הַזָּ֑עַם (of the indignation), כִּ֖י (for) לְמוֹעֵ֥ד (at the appointed time) קֵֽץ׃ (is the end).

20  הָאַ֥יִל (The ram) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) רָאִ֖יתָ (you saw) בַּ֣עַל (owner) הַקְּרָנָ֑יִם (of the two horns) מַלְכֵ֖י (are the kings) מָדַ֥י (of Media) וּפָרָֽס׃ (and Persia). 21  וְהַצָּפִ֥יר (And the goat) הַשָּׂעִ֖יר (male) מֶ֣לֶךְ (is the king) יָוָ֑ן (of Javan), וְהַקֶּ֤רֶן (and the horn) הַגְּדוֹלָה֙ (large) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that is) בֵּין־ (between) עֵינָ֔יו (his eyes) ה֖וּא (is) הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ (the king) הָרִאשֽׁוֹן׃ (first). 22  וְהַ֨נִּשְׁבֶּ֔רֶת (And the broken one), וַתַּֽעֲמֹ֥דְנָה (and that arose) אַרְבַּ֖ע (the four) תַּחְתֶּ֑יהָ (in its place) אַרְבַּ֧ע (is four) מַלְכֻי֛וֹת (kingdoms) מִגּ֥וֹי (from that nation), יַעֲמֹ֖דְנָה (that will rise up) וְלֹ֥א (not) בְכֹחֽוֹ׃ (with its power).

23  וּֽבְאַחֲרִית֙ (And in the latter time) מַלְכוּתָ֔ם (of their reign), כְּהָתֵ֖ם (at the completion), הַפֹּשְׁעִ֑ים (of those transgressing) יַעֲמֹ֛ד (there will arise). מֶ֥לֶךְ (A king) עַז־ (strong) פָּנִ֖ים (of face), וּמֵבִ֥ין (and understanding) חִידֽוֹת׃ (riddles), 24  וְעָצַ֤ם (and will be mighty), כֹּחוֹ֙ (his power) וְלֹ֣א (not) בְכֹח֔וֹ (by his power), וְנִפְלָא֥וֹת (and marvelously), יַשְׁחִ֖ית (He will destroy) וְהִצְלִ֣יחַ (and he will prosper), וְעָשָׂ֑ה (and in what he does), וְהִשְׁחִ֥ית (and He will destroy) עֲצוּמִ֖ים (the mighty ones) וְעַם־ (and the people) קְדֹשִֽׁים׃ (the holy ones). 25  וְעַל־ (And by) שִׂכְל֗וֹ (his cunning) וְהִצְלִ֤יחַ (he will also make prosper) מִרְמָה֙ (deceit) בְּיָד֔וֹ (under his hand); וּבִלְבָב֣וֹ (and in his heart), יַגְדִּ֔יל (he will magnify himself) וּבְשַׁלְוָ֖ה (and when at ease) יַשְׁחִ֣ית (he will destroy) רַבִּ֑ים (many); וְעַ֤ל־ (and against) שַׂר־ (the Prince) שָׂרִים֙ (of princes); יַעֲמֹ֔ד (he will rise) וּבְאֶ֥פֶס (and without) יָ֖ד (human hand) יִשָּׁבֵֽר׃ (he will be broken).

26  וּמַרְאֵ֨ה (And the vision) הָעֶ֧רֶב (of the evenings) וְהַבֹּ֛קֶר (and the mornings) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) נֶאֱמַ֖ר (was told) אֱמֶ֣ת (true); ה֑וּא (is) וְאַתָּה֙ (and you) סְתֹ֣ם (seal up) הֶֽחָז֔וֹן (the vision); כִּ֖י (for) לְיָמִ֥ים (days) רַבִּֽים׃ (it is after many).

27  וַאֲנִ֣י (And I) דָנִיֵּ֗אל (Daniel) נִהְיֵ֤יתִי (was overcome), וְנֶֽחֱלֵ֙יתִי֙ (and was sick) יָמִ֔ים (for days); וָאָק֕וּם (and I rose), וָאֶֽעֱשֶׂ֖ה (and went about) אֶת־ (-) מְלֶ֣אכֶת (the business); הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ (of the king) וָאֶשְׁתּוֹמֵ֥ם (and I was appalled) עַל־ (by) הַמַּרְאֶ֖ה (the vision), וְאֵ֥ין (and it was not) מֵבִֽין׃פ (understood).
