Daniel’s Prayer for His People

1  בִּשְׁנַ֣ת (In the year) אַחַ֗ת (first) לְדָרְיָ֛וֶשׁ (of Darius) בֶּן־ (son) אֲחַשְׁוֵר֖וֹשׁ (of Ahasuerus), מִזֶּ֣רַע (of the seed) מָדָ֑י (of the Medes), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who) הָמְלַ֔ךְ (was made king) עַ֖ל (over) מַלְכ֥וּת (the realm) כַּשְׂדִּֽים׃ (of the Chaldeans); 2  בִּשְׁנַ֤ת (in the year) אַחַת֙ (first) לְמָלְכ֔וֹ (of his reign) אֲנִי֙ (I) דָּֽנִיֵּ֔אל (Daniel) בִּינֹ֖תִי (perceived) בַּסְּפָרִ֑ים (in the books) מִסְפַּ֣ר (the number) הַשָּׁנִ֗ים (of the years), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) הָיָ֤ה (must be) דְבַר־ (according to the word) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH) אֶל־ (to) יִרְמִיָ֣ה (Jeremiah) הַנָּבִ֔יא (the prophet), לְמַלֹּ֛אות (to bring fulfillment) לְחָרְב֥וֹת (to the desolations) יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם (of Jerusalem) שִׁבְעִ֥ים (seventy) שָׁנָֽה׃ (years). 3  וָאֶתְּנָ֣ה (And I set) אֶת־ (-) פָּנַ֗י (my face) אֶל־ (toward) אֲדֹנָי֙ (the Lord) הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים (God), לְבַקֵּ֥שׁ (to seek) תְּפִלָּ֖ה (by prayer) וְתַחֲנוּנִ֑ים (and supplications), בְּצ֖וֹם (with fasting), וְשַׂ֥ק (and sackcloth), וָאֵֽפֶר׃ (and ashes).

4  וָֽאֶתְפַּֽלְלָ֛ה (And I prayed) לַיהוָ֥ה (to YHWH) אֱלֹהַ֖י (my God), וָאֶתְוַדֶּ֑ה (and I made confession), וָאֹֽמְרָ֗ה (and said), אָנָּ֤א (O) אֲדֹנָי֙ (Lord), הָאֵ֤ל (God), הַגָּדוֹל֙ (the great) וְהַנּוֹרָ֔א (and fearsome One) שֹׁמֵ֤ר (the One keeping) הַבְּרִית֙ (the covenant) וְֽהַחֶ֔סֶד (and the loving devotion) לְאֹהֲבָ֖יו (to those loving Him) וּלְשֹׁמְרֵ֥י (and those keeping) מִצְוֺתָֽיו׃ (His commandments); 5  חָטָ֥אנוּ (we have sinned), וְעָוִ֖ינוּ (and we have done wrong), וְהִרְשַׁעְנוּ (we have been wicked), וּמָרָ֑דְנוּ (and we have rebelled), וְס֥וֹר (and turned aside) מִמִּצְוֺתֶ֖ךָ (from Your precepts) וּמִמִּשְׁפָּטֶֽיךָ׃ (and Your ordinances). 6  וְלֹ֤א (And not) שָׁמַ֙עְנוּ֙ (have we listened) אֶל־ (to) עֲבָדֶ֣יךָ (Your servants) הַנְּבִיאִ֔ים (the prophets), אֲשֶׁ֤ר (those who) דִּבְּרוּ֙ (spoke) בְּשִׁמְךָ֔ (in Your name) אֶל־ (to) מְלָכֵ֥ינוּ (our kings), שָׂרֵ֖ינוּ (and our princes), וַאֲבֹתֵ֑ינוּ (and our fathers), וְאֶ֖ל (and to) כָּל־ (all) עַ֥ם (the people) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (of the land).

7  לְךָ֤ (Unto You) אֲדֹנָי֙ (O Lord), הַצְּדָקָ֔ה (is the righteousness) וְלָ֛נוּ (and unto us) בֹּ֥שֶׁת (is shame) הַפָּנִ֖ים (of face), כַּיּ֣וֹם (as on the day); הַזֶּ֑ה (this) לְאִ֤ישׁ (to the men) יְהוּדָה֙ (of Judah), וּלְיוֹשְׁבֵ֣י (and to the dwellers) יְרֽוּשָׁלִַ֔ם (of Jerusalem), וּֽלְכָל־ (and to all) יִשְׂרָאֵ֞ל (of Israel), הַקְּרֹבִ֣ים (those near), וְהָרְחֹקִ֗ים (and those far off), בְּכָל־ (in all) הָֽאֲרָצוֹת֙ (the lands) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (to which) הִדַּחְתָּ֣ם (You have driven them) שָׁ֔ם (there) בְּמַעֲלָ֖ם (because of their unfaithfulness) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (with which) מָֽעֲלוּ־ (they were unfaithful) בָֽךְ׃ (to You). 8  יְהוָ֗ה (O YHWH), לָ֚נוּ (to us) בֹּ֣שֶׁת (is shame) הַפָּנִ֔ים (of face), לִמְלָכֵ֥ינוּ (to our kings), לְשָׂרֵ֖ינוּ (to our princes), וְלַאֲבֹתֵ֑ינוּ (and to our fathers), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (because) חָטָ֖אנוּ (we have sinned) לָֽךְ׃ (against You).

9  לַֽאדֹנָ֣י (Unto the Lord) אֱלֹהֵ֔ינוּ (our God) הָרַחֲמִ֖ים (belongs compassion) וְהַסְּלִח֑וֹת (and forgiveness), כִּ֥י (though) מָרַ֖דְנוּ (we have rebelled) בּֽוֹ׃ (against Him). 10  וְלֹ֣א (And not) שָׁמַ֔עְנוּ (did we listen) בְּק֖וֹל (to the voice) יְהוָ֣ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ (our God), לָלֶ֤כֶת (to walk) בְּתֽוֹרֹתָיו֙ (in His laws), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) נָתַ֣ן (He gave) לְפָנֵ֔ינוּ (before our faces) בְּיַ֖ד (by the hand) עֲבָדָ֥יו (of His servants) הַנְּבִיאִֽים׃ (the prophets).

11  וְכָל־ (And all) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (Israel) עָֽבְרוּ֙ (has transgressed) אֶת־ (-) תּ֣וֹרָתֶ֔ךָ (Your law), וְס֕וֹר (and turning aside from it), לְבִלְתִּ֖י (not) שְׁמ֣וֹעַ (to listen) בְּקֹלֶ֑ךָ (to Your voice); וַתִּתַּ֨ךְ (and has been poured out) עָלֵ֜ינוּ (on us) הָאָלָ֣ה (the oath) וְהַשְּׁבֻעָ֗ה (and the curse) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) כְּתוּבָה֙ (is written) בְּתוֹרַת֙ (in the Law) מֹשֶׁ֣ה (of Moses) עֶֽבֶד־ (the servant) הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים (of God), כִּ֥י (because) חָטָ֖אנוּ (we have sinned) לֽוֹ׃ (against Him). 12  וַיָּ֜קֶם (And He has made stand) אֶת־ (-) דְּבָרָיו (His word), אֲשֶׁר־ (which) דִּבֶּ֣ר (He spoke) עָלֵ֗ינוּ (against us) וְעַ֤ל (and against) שֹֽׁפְטֵ֙ינוּ֙ (our judges) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who) שְׁפָט֔וּנוּ (judged us) לְהָבִ֥יא (by bringing) עָלֵ֖ינוּ (upon us) רָעָ֣ה (calamity); גְדֹלָ֑ה (great) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (which) לֹֽא־ (not) נֶעֶשְׂתָ֗ה (has been done) תַּ֚חַת (under) כָּל־ (all) הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם (the heavens) כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (like what) נֶעֶשְׂתָ֖ה (has been done) בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ (to Jerusalem).

13  כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר (As) כָּתוּב֙ (it is written) בְּתוֹרַ֣ת (in the Law) מֹשֶׁ֔ה (of Moses), אֵ֛ת (-) כָּל־ (all) הָרָעָ֥ה (the calamity) הַזֹּ֖את (this) בָּ֣אָה (has come) עָלֵ֑ינוּ (upon us) וְלֹֽא־ (and not) חִלִּ֜ינוּ (we have pleaded) אֶת־ (-) פְּנֵ֣י׀ (before the face) יְהוָ֣ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֗ינוּ (our God), לָשׁוּב֙ (to turn back) מֵֽעֲוֺנֵ֔נוּ (from our iniquity), וּלְהַשְׂכִּ֖יל (and to gain discernment) בַּאֲמִתֶּֽךָ׃ (of Your truth). 14  וַיִּשְׁקֹ֤ד (And has kept watch) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) עַל־ (over) הָ֣רָעָ֔ה (the calamity), וַיְבִיאֶ֖הָ (and has brought it) עָלֵ֑ינוּ (upon us) כִּֽי־ (for) צַדִּ֞יק (righteous is) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֗ינוּ (our God) עַל־ (in) כָּל־ (all) מַֽעֲשָׂיו֙ (His deeds) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) עָשָׂ֔ה (He does), וְלֹ֥א (and not) שָׁמַ֖עְנוּ (have we listened) בְּקֹלֽוֹ׃ (to His voice).

15  וְעַתָּ֣ה׀ (And now), אֲדֹנָ֣י (O Lord) אֱלֹהֵ֗ינוּ (our God), אֲשֶׁר֩ (who) הוֹצֵ֨אתָ (brought out) אֶֽת־ (-) עַמְּךָ֜ (Your people) מֵאֶ֤רֶץ (from the land) מִצְרַ֙יִם֙ (of Egypt) בְּיָ֣ד (with a hand), חֲזָקָ֔ה (mighty) וַתַּֽעַשׂ־ (and made) לְךָ֥ (for Yourself) שֵׁ֖ם (a name), כַּיּ֣וֹם (as on the day); הַזֶּ֑ה (this) חָטָ֖אנוּ (we have sinned), רָשָֽׁעְנוּ׃ (we have acted wickedly). 16  אֲדֹנָ֗י (O Lord), כְּכָל־ (according to all) צִדְקֹתֶ֙ךָ֙ (Your righteousness), יָֽשָׁב־ (let be turned back) נָ֤א (please), אַפְּךָ֙ (Your anger) וַחֲמָ֣תְךָ֔ (and Your fury) מֵעִֽירְךָ֥ (from Your city) יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם (Jerusalem), הַר־ (the mountain); קָדְשֶׁ֑ךָ (of Your holiness) כִּ֤י (for) בַחֲטָאֵ֙ינוּ֙ (because of our sins), וּבַעֲוֺנ֣וֹת (and the iniquities) אֲבֹתֵ֔ינוּ (of our fathers), יְרוּשָׁלִַ֧ם (Jerusalem) וְעַמְּךָ֛ (and Your people) לְחֶרְפָּ֖ה (are a reproach) לְכָל־ (to all) סְבִיבֹתֵֽינוּ׃ (around us).

17  וְעַתָּ֣ה׀ (And now) שְׁמַ֣ע (listen) אֱלֹהֵ֗ינוּ (our God), אֶל־ (to) תְּפִלַּ֤ת (the prayer) עַבְדְּךָ֙ (of Your servant), וְאֶל־ (and to) תַּ֣חֲנוּנָ֔יו (his supplications), וְהָאֵ֣ר (and cause to shine) פָּנֶ֔יךָ (Your face) עַל־ (on) מִקְדָּשְׁךָ֖ (Your sanctuary) הַשָּׁמֵ֑ם (that is desolate), לְמַ֖עַן (for the sake) אֲדֹנָֽי׃ (of the Lord). 18  הַטֵּ֨ה (Incline) אֱלֹהַ֥י׀ (O my God), אָזְנְךָ֮ (Your ear), וּֽשֲׁמָע֒ (and hear); פִּקְחָה (open) עֵינֶ֗יךָ (Your eyes), וּרְאֵה֙ (and see) שֹֽׁמְמֹתֵ֔ינוּ (our desolations) וְהָעִ֕יר (and the city) אֲשֶׁר־ (which) נִקְרָ֥א (is called) שִׁמְךָ֖ (Your name); עָלֶ֑יהָ (upon) כִּ֣י׀ (For) לֹ֣א (it is not) עַל־ (because of) צִדְקֹתֵ֗ינוּ (our righteous acts), אֲנַ֨חְנוּ (that we) מַפִּילִ֤ים (are letting fall) תַּחֲנוּנֵ֙ינוּ֙ (our supplications) לְפָנֶ֔יךָ (before Your face) כִּ֖י (but) עַל־ (because of) רַחֲמֶ֥יךָ (Your mercies) הָרַבִּֽים׃ (many).

19  אֲדֹנָ֤י׀ (O Lord), שְׁמָ֙עָה֙ (may You hear); אֲדֹנָ֣י׀ (O Lord), סְלָ֔חָה (may You forgive); אֲדֹנָ֛י (O Lord), הַֽקֲשִׁ֥יבָה (may You be attentive) וַעֲשֵׂ֖ה (and act); אַל־ (not), תְּאַחַ֑ר (should You delay) לְמַֽעֲנְךָ֣ (for Your sake), אֱלֹהַ֔י (O my God), כִּֽי־ (for) שִׁמְךָ֣ (Your name). נִקְרָ֔א (Is called) עַל־ (upon) עִירְךָ֖ (Your city) וְעַל־ (and upon) עַמֶּֽךָ׃ (Your people).

Gabriel’s Prophecy of the Seventy Weeks

20  וְע֨וֹד (And still) אֲנִ֤י (I) מְדַבֵּר֙ (was speaking), וּמִתְפַּלֵּ֔ל (and praying), וּמִתְוַדֶּה֙ (and confessing) חַטָּאתִ֔י (my sin) וְחַטַּ֖את (and the sin) עַמִּ֣י (of my people) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (Israel), וּמַפִּ֣יל (and letting fall) תְּחִנָּתִ֗י (my supplication) לִפְנֵי֙ (before) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהַ֔י (my God) עַ֖ל (over) הַר־ (the mountain) קֹ֥דֶשׁ (of the holiness) אֱלֹהָֽי׃ (of my God); 21  וְע֛וֹד (and still) אֲנִ֥י (I) מְדַבֵּ֖ר (was speaking) בַּתְּפִלָּ֑ה (in prayer), וְהָאִ֣ישׁ (when the man) גַּבְרִיאֵ֡ל (Gabriel), אֲשֶׁר֩ (whom) רָאִ֨יתִי (I had seen) בֶחָז֤וֹן (in the vision) בַּתְּחִלָּה֙ (at the beginning), מֻעָ֣ף (was flying) בִּיעָ֔ף (swiftly), נֹגֵ֣עַ (reaching) אֵלַ֔י (to me) כְּעֵ֖ת (at the time) מִנְחַת־ (of the sacrifice) עָֽרֶב׃ (of the evening). 22  וַיָּ֖בֶן (And he gave understanding) וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר (and spoke) עִמִּ֑י (with me) וַיֹּאמַ֕ר (and he said), דָּנִיֵּ֕אל (O Daniel), עַתָּ֥ה (now) יָצָ֖אתִי (I have come forth) לְהַשְׂכִּילְךָ֥ (to give you insight) בִינָֽה׃ (for understanding). 23  בִּתְחִלַּ֨ת (At the beginning) תַּחֲנוּנֶ֜יךָ (of your supplications) יָצָ֣א (went forth), דָבָ֗ר (the command) וַאֲנִי֙ (and I) בָּ֣אתִי (have come) לְהַגִּ֔יד (to declare it) כִּ֥י (for) חֲמוּד֖וֹת (precious); אָ֑תָּה (you are) וּבִין֙ (and understand) בַּדָּבָ֔ר (the word), וְהָבֵ֖ן (and understand) בַּמַּרְאֶֽה׃ (the vision).

24  שָׁבֻעִ֨ים (Sevens) שִׁבְעִ֜ים (Seventy) נֶחְתַּ֥ךְ (are determined) עַֽל־ (for) עַמְּךָ֣׀ (your people) וְעַל־ (and for) עִ֣יר (the city), קָדְשֶׁ֗ךָ (of your holiness) לְכַלֵּ֨א (to finish) הַפֶּ֜שַׁע (the transgression), וּלַחְתֹּם (and to seal off) חַטָּאוֹת (sin), וּלְכַפֵּ֣ר (and to make atonement for) עָוֺ֔ן (iniquity), וּלְהָבִ֖יא (and to bring in) צֶ֣דֶק (righteousness), עֹֽלָמִ֑ים (everlasting) וְלַחְתֹּם֙ (and to seal up) חָז֣וֹן (vision) וְנָבִ֔יא (and prophecy), וְלִמְשֹׁ֖חַ (and to anoint) קֹ֥דֶשׁ (the Holy) קָֽדָשִֽׁים׃ (of Holies).

25  וְתֵדַ֨ע (And you shall know) וְתַשְׂכֵּ֜ל (and you shall understand), מִן־ (that from) מֹצָ֣א (the going forth) דָבָ֗ר (of the word) לְהָשִׁיב֙ (to return) וְלִבְנ֤וֹת (and to rebuild) יְרֽוּשָׁלִַ֙ם֙ (Jerusalem) עַד־ (until) מָשִׁ֣יחַ (Messiah) נָגִ֔יד (a Prince) שָׁבֻעִ֖ים (sevens), שִׁבְעָ֑ה (seven) וְשָׁבֻעִ֞ים (and sevens); שִׁשִּׁ֣ים (sixty) וּשְׁנַ֗יִם (and two) תָּשׁוּב֙ (it will return), וְנִבְנְתָה֙ (and it will be built) רְח֣וֹב (street) וְחָר֔וּץ (and trench), וּבְצ֖וֹק (and in distress) הָעִתִּֽים׃ (of the times).

26  וְאַחֲרֵ֤י (And after) הַשָּׁבֻעִים֙ (sevens) שִׁשִּׁ֣ים (sixty) וּשְׁנַ֔יִם (and two) יִכָּרֵ֥ת (will be cut off), מָשִׁ֖יחַ (Messiah) וְאֵ֣ין (and not) ל֑וֹ (for Him)

וְהָעִ֨יר (and the city) וְהַקֹּ֜דֶשׁ (and the sanctuary); יַ֠שְׁחִית (will destroy) עַ֣ם (the people) נָגִ֤יד (of the leader) הַבָּא֙ (who is coming) וְקִצּ֣וֹ (and its end is) בַשֶּׁ֔טֶף (in a flood), וְעַד֙ (and until) קֵ֣ץ (the end) מִלְחָמָ֔ה (war) נֶחֱרֶ֖צֶת (are determined) שֹׁמֵמֽוֹת׃ (and desolations). 27  וְהִגְבִּ֥יר (And he will make strong) בְּרִ֛ית (a covenant) לָרַבִּ֖ים (with the many) שָׁב֣וּעַ (for a seven), אֶחָ֑ד (one) וַחֲצִ֨י (and in the middle) הַשָּׁב֜וּעַ (of the seven) יַשְׁבִּ֣ית׀ (he will make cease), זֶ֣בַח (the sacrifice) וּמִנְחָ֗ה (and offering) וְעַ֨ל (and on) כְּנַ֤ף (a wing) שִׁקּוּצִים֙ (of abominations) מְשֹׁמֵ֔ם (he shall make it desolate), וְעַד־ (and until) כָּלָה֙ (the consummation), וְנֶ֣חֱרָצָ֔ה (that is decreed) תִּתַּ֖ךְ (is poured out) עַל־ (on) שֹׁמֵֽם׃פ (the one bringing desolation).
