The People Confess Their Sins

1  וּבְיוֹם֩ (And on the day) עֶשְׂרִ֨ים (twenty) וְאַרְבָּעָ֜ה (and fourth) לַחֹ֣דֶשׁ (of month) הַזֶּ֗ה (this) נֶאֶסְפ֤וּ (were assembled) בְנֵֽי־ (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel) בְּצ֣וֹם (with fasting), וּבְשַׂקִּ֔ים (and in sackcloth), וַאֲדָמָ֖ה (and with dust) עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃ (on their heads). 2  וַיִּבָּֽדְלוּ֙ (And separated themselves) זֶ֣רַע (the seed) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) מִכֹּ֖ל (from all) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) נֵכָ֑ר (of a foreigner), וַיַּעַמְד֗וּ (and they stood) וַיִּתְוַדּוּ֙ (and confessed) עַל־ (concerning) חַטֹּ֣אתֵיהֶ֔ם (their sins) וַעֲוֺנ֖וֹת (and the iniquities) אֲבֹתֵיהֶֽם׃ (of their fathers).

3  וַיָּק֙וּמוּ֙ (And they stood up) עַל־ (in) עָמְדָ֔ם (their place) וַֽיִּקְרְא֗וּ (and read) בְּסֵ֨פֶר (from the Book) תּוֹרַ֧ת (of the Law) יְהוָ֛ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיהֶ֖ם (their God) רְבִעִ֣ית (for a fourth) הַיּ֑וֹם (of the day), וּרְבִעִית֙ (and a fourth) מִתְוַדִּ֣ים (they confessed) וּמִֽשְׁתַּחֲוִ֔ים (and bowed low) לַיהוָ֖ה (to YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיהֶֽם׃פ (their God).

4  וַיָּ֜קָם (And there stood) עַֽל־ (on) מַֽעֲלֵ֣ה (the ascent), הַלְוִיִּ֗ם (of the Levites): יֵשׁ֨וּעַ (Jeshua), וּבָנִ֜י (and Bani), קַדְמִיאֵ֧ל (Kadmiel), שְׁבַנְיָ֛ה (Shebaniah), בֻּנִּ֥י (Bunni), שֵׁרֵבְיָ֖ה (Sherebiah), בָּנִ֣י (Bani), כְנָ֑נִי (and Chenani), וַֽיִּזְעֲקוּ֙ (and they cried out) בְּק֣וֹל (with a voice) גָּד֔וֹל (loud) אֶל־ (to) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיהֶֽם׃ (their God). 5  וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ (And said), הַלְוִיִּ֡ם (the Levites), יֵשׁ֣וּעַ (Jeshua), וְ֠קַדְמִיאֵל (and Kadmiel), בָּנִ֨י (Bani), חֲשַׁבְנְיָ֜ה (Hashabniah), שֵׁרֵֽבְיָ֤ה (Sherebiah), הֽוֹדִיָּה֙ (Hodijah), שְׁבַנְיָ֣ה (Shebaniah), פְתַֽחְיָ֔ה (and Pethahiah), ק֗וּמוּ (Rise) בָּרֲכוּ֙ (and bless) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ God) מִן־ (from) הָעוֹלָ֖ם (forever) עַד־ (even to) הָעוֹלָ֑ם (forever)!

וִיבָֽרְכוּ֙ (And blessed be) שֵׁ֣ם (the name) כְּבוֹדֶ֔ךָ (of your glory),

וּמְרוֹמַ֥ם (and may it be exalted) עַל־ (above) כָּל־ (all) בְּרָכָ֖ה (blessing) וּתְהִלָּֽה׃ (and praise).

6  אַתָּה־ (You) ה֣וּא (are He), יְהוָה֮ (YHWH) לְבַדֶּךָ֒ (You alone);

אַתְּ (You) עָשִׂ֡יתָ (have made) אֶֽת־ (-) הַשָּׁמַיִם֩ (the heavens),

שְׁמֵ֨י (the heavens) הַשָּׁמַ֜יִם (of the heavens), וְכָל־ (and all) צְבָאָ֗ם (their host),

הָאָ֜רֶץ (the earth), וְכָל־ (and all) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) עָלֶ֙יהָ֙ (is on it),

הַיַּמִּים֙ (the seas), וְכָל־ (and all) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that is) בָּהֶ֔ם (in them)

וְאַתָּ֖ה (and You) מְחַיֶּ֣ה (give life) אֶת־ (-) כֻּלָּ֑ם (to all things);

וּצְבָ֥א (and the host) הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם (of the heavens) לְךָ֥ (to You) מִשְׁתַּחֲוִֽים׃ (gives worship).

7  אַתָּה־ (You) הוּא֙ (are He) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH)

הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים (the God), אֲשֶׁ֤ר (who) בָּחַ֙רְתָּ֙ (chose) בְּאַבְרָ֔ם (Abram),

וְהוֹצֵאת֖וֹ (and brought him out) מֵא֣וּר (from Ur) כַּשְׂדִּ֑ים (of the Chaldeans),

וְשַׂ֥מְתָּ (and you set) שְּׁמ֖וֹ (his name to be) אַבְרָהָֽם׃ (Abraham);

8  וּמָצָ֣אתָ (and You found) אֶת־ (-) לְבָבוֹ֮ (his heart) נֶאֱמָ֣ן (faithful) לְפָנֶיךָ֒ (before You)

וְכָר֨וֹת (and You cut) עִמּ֜וֹ (with him) הַבְּרִ֗ית (a covenant)

לָתֵ֡ת (to give him) אֶת־ (-) אֶרֶץ֩ (the land) הַכְּנַעֲנִ֨י (of the Canaanite), הַחִתִּ֜י (the Hittite),

הָאֱמֹרִ֧י (the Amorite), וְהַפְּרִזִּ֛י (and the Perizzite), וְהַיְבוּסִ֥י (and the Jebusite), וְהַגִּרְגָּשִׁ֖י (and the Girgashite),

לָתֵ֣ת (to give it) לְזַרְע֑וֹ (to his seed).

וַתָּ֙קֶם֙ (And You made stand) אֶת־ (-) דְּבָרֶ֔יךָ (Your words),

כִּ֥י (for) צַדִּ֖יק (righteous) אָֽתָּה׃ (You are).

9  וַתֵּ֛רֶא (And You saw) אֶת־ (-) עֳנִ֥י (the affliction) אֲבֹתֵ֖ינוּ (of our fathers) בְּמִצְרָ֑יִם (in Egypt),

וְאֶת־ (and) זַעֲקָתָ֥ם (their cry) שָׁמַ֖עְתָּ (You heard) עַל־ (at) יַם־ (the Sea) סֽוּף׃ (of Reeds).

10  וַ֠תִּתֵּן (And You gave forth) אֹתֹ֨ת (signs) וּמֹֽפְתִ֜ים (and wonders) בְּפַרְעֹ֤ה (against Pharaoh),

וּבְכָל־ (and against all) עֲבָדָיו֙ (his servants), וּבְכָל־ (and against all) עַ֣ם (the people) אַרְצ֔וֹ (of his land).

כִּ֣י (For) יָדַ֔עְתָּ (You knew) כִּ֥י (that) הֵזִ֖ידוּ (they seethed) עֲלֵיהֶ֑ם (against them)

וַתַּֽעַשׂ־ (and You made) לְךָ֥ (for Yourself) שֵׁ֖ם (a name),

כְּהַיּ֥וֹם (as it is the day) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this).

11  וְהַיָּם֙ (And the sea) בָּקַ֣עְתָּ (You divided) לִפְנֵיהֶ֔ם (before them)

וַיַּֽעַבְר֥וּ (and they passed over) בְתוֹךְ־ (in the midst) הַיָּ֖ם (of the sea) בַּיַּבָּשָׁ֑ה (on the dry land).

וְֽאֶת־ (And) רֹ֨דְפֵיהֶ֜ם (those pursuing them) הִשְׁלַ֧כְתָּ (You threw) בִמְצוֹלֹ֛ת (into the depths),

כְּמוֹ־ (like) אֶ֖בֶן (a stone) בְּמַ֥יִם (into waters) עַזִּֽים׃ (mighty).

12  וּבְעַמּ֣וּד (And by a pillar) עָנָ֔ן (of cloud) הִנְחִיתָ֖ם (You led them) יוֹמָ֑ם (by day)

וּבְעַמּ֥וּד (and by a pillar) אֵשׁ֙ (of fire) לַ֔יְלָה (by night),

לְהָאִ֣יר (to give light) לָהֶ֔ם (for them) אֶת־ (-)

הַדֶּ֖רֶךְ (on the way) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (which) יֵֽלְכוּ־ (they should walk) בָֽהּ׃ (in it).

13  וְעַ֤ל (And upon) הַר־ (Mount) סִינַי֙ (Sinai) יָרַ֔דְתָּ (You came down)

וְדַבֵּ֥ר (and spoke) עִמָּהֶ֖ם (with them) מִשָּׁמָ֑יִם (from the heavens),

וַתִּתֵּ֨ן (and You gave) לָהֶ֜ם (to them) מִשְׁפָּטִ֤ים (ordinances) יְשָׁרִים֙ (straight) וְתוֹר֣וֹת (and instructions) אֱמֶ֔ת (true),

חֻקִּ֥ים (statutes) וּמִצְוֺ֖ת (and commandments) טוֹבִֽים׃ (good).

14  וְאֶת־ (And) שַׁבַּ֥ת (the Sabbath) קָדְשְׁךָ֖ (of Your holiness) הוֹדַ֣עַתָ (You made known) לָהֶ֑ם (to them),

וּמִצְו֤וֹת (and the commands) וְחֻקִּים֙ (and statutes) וְתוֹרָ֔ה (and instructions) צִוִּ֣יתָ (You commanded) לָהֶ֔ם (to them)

בְּיַ֖ד (by the hand) מֹשֶׁ֥ה (of Moses) עַבְדֶּֽךָ׃ (Your servant);

15  וְ֠לֶחֶם (and bread) מִשָּׁמַ֜יִם (from the heavens) נָתַ֤תָּה (You gave) לָהֶם֙ (to them) לִרְעָבָ֔ם (for their hunger),

וּמַ֗יִם (and water) מִסֶּ֛לַע (from the cliff) הוֹצֵ֥אתָ (you brought forth) לָהֶ֖ם (to them) לִצְמָאָ֑ם (for their thirst),

וַתֹּ֣אמֶר (and You said) לָהֶ֗ם (to them) לָבוֹא֙ (to go in) לָרֶ֣שֶׁת (to possess) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the land)

אֲשֶׁר־ (that) נָשָׂ֥אתָ (You lifted) אֶת־ (-) יָדְךָ֖ (Your hand) לָתֵ֥ת (to give) לָהֶֽם׃ (to them).

16  וְהֵ֥ם (And they) וַאֲבֹתֵ֖ינוּ (and our fathers) הֵזִ֑ידוּ (seethed) וַיַּקְשׁוּ֙ (and hardened) אֶת־ (-) עָרְפָּ֔ם (their necks),

וְלֹ֥א (and not) שָׁמְע֖וּ (did they listen) אֶל־ (to) מִצְוֺתֶֽיךָ׃ (Your commandments).

17  וַיְמָאֲנ֣וּ (And they refused) לִשְׁמֹ֗עַ (to hear), וְלֹא־ (and not) זָכְר֤וּ (did they remember)

נִפְלְאֹתֶ֙יךָ֙ (Your wonders) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) עָשִׂ֣יתָ (You did) עִמָּהֶ֔ם (among them);

וַיַּקְשׁוּ֙ (and they hardened) אֶת־ (-) עָרְפָּ֔ם (their necks) וַיִּתְּנוּ־ (and appointed) רֹ֛אשׁ (a leader)

לָשׁ֥וּב (for returning) לְעַבְדֻתָ֖ם (to their slavery) בְּמִרְיָ֑ם (in their rebellion).

וְאַתָּה֩ (And You are) אֱל֨וֹהַּ (a God) סְלִיח֜וֹת (of forgiveness),

חַנּ֧וּן (gracious) וְרַח֛וּם (and compassionate),

אֶֽרֶךְ־ (long) אַפַּ֥יִם (of nostrils) וְרַב־ (and abounding) וְחֶסֶד (in loving devotion)—

וְלֹ֥א (and not) עֲזַבְתָּֽם׃ (did You forsake them).

18  אַ֗ף (Also) כִּֽי־ (for) עָשׂ֤וּ (they made) לָהֶם֙ (for themselves)

עֵ֣גֶל (a calf) מַסֵּכָ֔ה (molten) וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ (and said),

זֶ֣ה (This is) אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ (your God) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who) הֶעֶלְךָ֖ (brought you up) מִמִּצְרָ֑יִם (from Egypt),

וַֽיַּעֲשׂ֔וּ (and they did) נֶאָצ֖וֹת (blasphemies) גְּדֹלֽוֹת׃ (great),

19  וְאַתָּה֙ (and You) בְּרַחֲמֶ֣יךָ (in Your mercies) הָֽרַבִּ֔ים (great)

לֹ֥א (not) עֲזַבְתָּ֖ם (did forsake them) בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר (in the wilderness) אֶת־ (-).

עַמּ֣וּד (The pillar) הֶ֠עָנָן (of the cloud) לֹא־ (not) סָ֨ר (He did turn aside) מֵעֲלֵיהֶ֤ם (from them) בְּיוֹמָם֙ (by day),

לְהַנְחֹתָ֣ם (to lead them) בְּהַדֶּ֔רֶךְ (on the path);

וְאֶת־ (and) עַמּ֨וּד (the pillar) הָאֵ֤שׁ (of the fire) בְּלַ֙יְלָה֙ (by night),

לְהָאִ֣יר (to shine) לָהֶ֔ם (on them), וְאֶת־ (and on) הַדֶּ֖רֶךְ (the way) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) יֵֽלְכוּ־ (they should walk) בָֽהּ׃ (in it).

20  וְרוּחֲךָ֨ (And Your Spirit) הַטּוֹבָ֔ה (good) נָתַ֖תָּ (You gave)

לְהַשְׂכִּילָ֑ם (to give them understanding),

וּמַנְךָ֙ (and Your manna) לֹא־ (not) מָנַ֣עְתָּ (did You withhold) מִפִּיהֶ֔ם (from their lips),

וּמַ֛יִם (and water) נָתַ֥תָּה (you gave) לָהֶ֖ם (to them) לִצְמָאָֽם׃ (for their thirst).

21  וְאַרְבָּעִ֥ים (And forty) שָׁנָ֛ה (years) כִּלְכַּלְתָּ֥ם (You sustained them) בַּמִּדְבָּ֖ר (in the wilderness);

לֹ֣א (not) חָסֵ֑רוּ (did they lack).

שַׂלְמֹֽתֵיהֶם֙ (Their clothes) לֹ֣א (not) בָל֔וּ (did wear out),

וְרַגְלֵיהֶ֖ם (and their feet) לֹ֥א (not) בָצֵֽקוּ׃ (did swell).

22  וַתִּתֵּ֨ן (And You gave) לָהֶ֤ם (to them) מַמְלָכוֹת֙ (kingdoms) וַעֲמָמִ֔ים (and nations),

וַֽתַּחְלְקֵ֖ם (and You portioned them) לְפֵאָ֑ה (to the corner).

וַיִּֽירְשׁ֞וּ (And they took possession of) אֶת־ (-) אֶ֣רֶץ (the land) סִיח֗וֹן (of Sihon), וְאֶת־ (and) אֶ֙רֶץ֙ (the land) מֶ֣לֶךְ (of the king) חֶשְׁבּ֔וֹן (of Heshbon),

וְאֶת־ (and) אֶ֖רֶץ (the land) ע֥וֹג (of Og) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) הַבָּשָֽׁן׃ (of Bashan).

23  וּבְנֵיהֶ֣ם (And their children) הִרְבִּ֔יתָ (You multiplied)

כְּכֹכְבֵ֖י (as the stars) הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם (of the heavens),

וַתְּבִיאֵם֙ (and You brought them) אֶל־ (into) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the land)

אֲשֶׁר־ (of which) אָמַ֥רְתָּ (You had said) לַאֲבֹתֵיהֶ֖ם (to their fathers)

לָב֥וֹא (to enter) לָרָֽשֶׁת׃ (to possess it).

24  וַיָּבֹ֤אוּ (And came) הַבָּנִים֙ (the sons) וַיִּֽירְשׁ֣וּ (and possessed) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the land),

וַתַּכְנַ֨ע (and You humbled) לִפְנֵיהֶ֜ם (before their faces) אֶת־ (-) יֹשְׁבֵ֤י (the dwellers) הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ (of the land)— הַכְּנַ֣עֲנִ֔ים (of the Canaanites)—

וַֽתִּתְּנֵ֖ם (and You gave them) בְּיָדָ֑ם (into their hands), וְאֶת־ (and) מַלְכֵיהֶם֙ (their kings)

וְאֶת־ (and) עַֽמְמֵ֣י (the people) הָאָ֔רֶץ (of the land),

לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת (to do) בָּהֶ֖ם (with them) כִּרְצוֹנָֽם׃ (according to their pleasure).

25  וַֽיִּלְכְּד֞וּ (And they took) עָרִ֣ים (cities) בְּצֻרוֹת֮ (fortified) וַאֲדָמָ֣ה (and a land) שְׁמֵנָה֒ (rich),

וַיִּֽירְשׁ֡וּ (and they possessed) בָּתִּ֣ים (houses) מְלֵֽאִים־ (full of) כָּל־ (all) ט֠וּב (good),

בֹּר֨וֹת (wells) חֲצוּבִ֜ים (dug),

כְּרָמִ֧ים (vineyards) וְזֵיתִ֛ים (and olive groves) וְעֵ֥ץ (and trees) מַאֲכָ֖ל (of fruit) לָרֹ֑ב (in abundance).

וַיֹּאכְל֤וּ (And they ate) וַֽיִּשְׂבְּעוּ֙ (and were filled)

וַיַּשְׁמִ֔ינוּ (and grew fat) וַיִּֽתְעַדְּנ֖וּ (and lived luxuriously) בְּטוּבְךָ֥ (in Your goodness) הַגָּדֽוֹל׃ (great).

26  וַיַּמְר֨וּ (And they were disobedient), וַֽיִּמְרְד֜וּ (and rebelled) בָּ֗ךְ (against You)

וַיַּשְׁלִ֤כוּ (and they cast) אֶת־ (-) תּוֹרָֽתְךָ֙ (Your law) אַחֲרֵ֣י (behind) גַוָּ֔ם (their backs),

וְאֶת־ (and) נְבִיאֶ֣יךָ (Your prophets) הָרָ֔גוּ (they killed)

אֲשֶׁר־ (those who) הֵעִ֥ידוּ (testified) בָ֖ם (against them) לַהֲשִׁיבָ֣ם (so as to turn them back) אֵלֶ֑יךָ (to You),

וַֽיַּעֲשׂ֔וּ (and they did) נֶאָצ֖וֹת (blasphemies) גְּדוֹלֹֽת׃ (great).

27  וַֽתִּתְּנֵם֙ (And You gave them) בְּיַ֣ד (into the hand) צָֽרֵיהֶ֔ם (of their enemies),

וַיָּצֵ֖רוּ (and they brought distress) לָהֶ֑ם (to them).

וּבְעֵ֤ת (And in the time) צָֽרָתָם֙ (of their distress) יִצְעֲק֣וּ (they cried) אֵלֶ֔יךָ (to You)

וְאַתָּה֙ (and You) מִשָּׁמַ֣יִם (from the heavens) תִּשְׁמָ֔ע (heard),

וּֽכְרַחֲמֶ֣יךָ (and according to Your mercies) הָֽרַבִּ֗ים (abundant) תִּתֵּ֤ן (You gave) לָהֶם֙ (to them) מֽוֹשִׁיעִ֔ים (saviors),

וְיוֹשִׁיע֖וּם (and they saved them) מִיַּ֥ד (from the hand) צָרֵיהֶֽם׃ (of their enemies).

28  וּכְנ֣וֹחַ (And after rest) לָהֶ֔ם (for them),

יָשׁ֕וּבוּ (again) לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת (they did) רַ֖ע (evil) לְפָנֶ֑יךָ (before You),

וַתַּֽעַזְבֵ֞ם (and you left them) בְּיַ֤ד (to the hand) אֹֽיְבֵיהֶם֙ (of their enemies),

וַיִּרְדּ֣וּ (and they ruled) בָהֶ֔ם (over them).

וַיָּשׁ֙וּבוּ֙ (And they returned) וַיִּזְעָק֔וּךָ (and cried out to You),

וְאַתָּ֞ה (and You) מִשָּׁמַ֧יִם (from the heavens) תִּשְׁמַ֛ע (heard)

וְתַצִּילֵ֥ם (and You delivered them) כְּֽרַחֲמֶ֖יךָ (according to Your mercies)

רַבּ֥וֹת (many) עִתִּֽים׃ (times).

29  וַתָּ֨עַד (And you testified) בָּהֶ֜ם (against them) לַהֲשִׁיבָ֣ם (to bring them back) אֶל־ (to) תּוֹרָתֶ֗ךָ (Your instruction),

וְהֵ֨מָּה (and they) הֵזִ֜ידוּ (still seethed) וְלֹא־ (and not) שָׁמְע֤וּ (did they listen) לְמִצְוֺתֶ֙יךָ֙ (to Your commands).

וּבְמִשְׁפָּטֶ֣יךָ (And Your just laws), חָֽטְאוּ־ (they sinned) בָ֔ם (against them),

אֲשֶׁר־ (which if) יַעֲשֶׂ֥ה (does them) אָדָ֖ם (a man), וְחָיָ֣ה (and shall he live) בָהֶ֑ם (by them);

וַיִּתְּנ֤וּ (and they gave) כָתֵף֙ (the shoulder) סוֹרֶ֔רֶת (to be stubborn),

וְעָרְפָּ֥ם (and their neck) הִקְשׁ֖וּ (they hardened) וְלֹ֥א (and not) שָׁמֵֽעוּ׃ (would they listen).

30  וַתִּמְשֹׁ֤ךְ (And You drew) עֲלֵיהֶם֙ (over them) שָׁנִ֣ים (years) רַבּ֔וֹת (many)

וַתָּ֨עַד (and You testified) בָּ֧ם (with them) בְּרוּחֲךָ֛ (Your Spirit) בְּיַד־ (by the hand) נְבִיאֶ֖יךָ (of Your prophets).

וְלֹ֣א (And not) הֶאֱזִ֑ינוּ (would they give an ear)

וַֽתִּתְּנֵ֔ם (and You gave them) בְּיַ֖ד (into the hand) עַמֵּ֥י (of the peoples) הָאֲרָצֹֽת׃ (of the lands).

31  וּֽבְרַחֲמֶ֧יךָ (And in Your mercies) הָרַבִּ֛ים (great)

לֹֽא־ (not) עֲשִׂיתָ֥ם (You did make of them) כָּלָ֖ה (a complete end),

וְלֹ֣א (and not) עֲזַבְתָּ֑ם (did You abandon them),

כִּ֛י (for) אֵֽל־ (a God) חַנּ֥וּן (gracious) וְרַח֖וּם (and merciful) אָֽתָּה׃ (You are).

32  וְעַתָּ֣ה (And now) אֱ֠לֹהֵינוּ (our God),

הָאֵ֨ל (the God) הַגָּד֜וֹל (the great), הַגִּבּ֣וֹר (the mighty) וְהַנּוֹרָא֮ (and fearsome),

שׁוֹמֵ֣ר (keeping) הַבְּרִ֣ית (the covenant) וְהַחֶסֶד֒ (and the kindness),

אַל־ (not) יִמְעַ֣ט (should it seem little) לְפָנֶ֡יךָ (before Your face) אֵ֣ת (-) כָּל־ (all) הַתְּלָאָ֣ה (the hardship)

אֲֽשֶׁר־ (that) מְ֠צָאַתְנוּ (has found us)—

לִמְלָכֵ֨ינוּ (for our kings), לְשָׂרֵ֧ינוּ (for our princes),

וּלְכֹהֲנֵ֛ינוּ (and for our priests), וְלִנְבִיאֵ֥נוּ (and for our prophets),

וְלַאֲבֹתֵ֖ינוּ (and for our fathers), וּלְכָל־ (and for all) עַמֶּ֑ךָ (Your people),

מִימֵי֙ (from the days) מַלְכֵ֣י (of the kings) אַשּׁ֔וּר (of Assyria) עַ֖ד (until) הַיּ֥וֹם (the day) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this).

33  וְאַתָּ֣ה (And You are) צַדִּ֔יק (righteous) עַ֖ל (over) כָּל־ (all) הַבָּ֣א (that has come) עָלֵ֑ינוּ (upon us),

כִּֽי־ (for) אֱמֶ֥ת (faithfully) עָשִׂ֖יתָ (You have acted),

וַאֲנַ֥חְנוּ (and we) הִרְשָֽׁעְנוּ׃ (have been wicked).

34  וְאֶת־ (And) מְלָכֵ֤ינוּ (our kings), שָׂרֵ֙ינוּ֙ (our princes), כֹּהֲנֵ֣ינוּ (our priests), וַאֲבֹתֵ֔ינוּ (and our fathers)

לֹ֥א (not) עָשׂ֖וּ (have they done) תּוֹרָתֶ֑ךָ (Your law),

וְלֹ֤א (and not) הִקְשִׁ֙יבוּ֙ (they have attended) אֶל־ (to) מִצְוֺתֶ֔יךָ (Your commandments)

וּלְעֵ֣דְוֺתֶ֔יךָ (and to Your testimonies) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) הַעִידֹ֖תָ (You testified) בָּהֶֽם׃ (with them).

35  וְהֵ֣ם (And they) בְּמַלְכוּתָם֩ (in their kingdom)

וּבְטוּבְךָ֨ (and in your goodness) הָרָ֜ב (the abundant)

אֲשֶׁר־ (that) נָתַ֣תָּ (You gave) לָהֶ֗ם (to them),

וּבְאֶ֨רֶץ (and in the land) הָרְחָבָ֧ה (broad) וְהַשְּׁמֵנָ֛ה (and rich)

אֲשֶׁר־ (that) נָתַ֥תָּ (You gave) לִפְנֵיהֶ֖ם (before their face),

לֹ֣א (not) עֲבָד֑וּךָ (did they serve You),

וְֽלֹא־ (and not) שָׁ֔בוּ (did they turn away) מִמַּֽעַלְלֵיהֶ֖ם (from their deeds) הָרָעִֽים׃ (evil).

36  הִנֵּ֛ה (Behold) אֲנַ֥חְנוּ (we are) הַיּ֖וֹם (this day), עֲבָדִ֑ים (slaves),

וְהָאָ֜רֶץ (and the land) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) נָתַ֣תָּה (You gave) לַאֲבֹתֵ֗ינוּ (to our fathers)

לֶאֱכֹ֤ל (to eat) אֶת־ (-) פִּרְיָהּ֙ (its fruit) וְאֶת־ (and) טוּבָ֔הּ (its goodness)

הִנֵּ֛ה (behold)— אֲנַ֥חְנוּ (we are) עֲבָדִ֖ים (slaves) עָלֶֽיהָ׃ (in it).

37  וּתְבוּאָתָ֣הּ (And its produce) מַרְבָּ֗ה (is multiplying) לַמְּלָכִ֛ים (for the kings)

אֲשֶׁר־ (whom) נָתַ֥תָּה (You have given) עָלֵ֖ינוּ (to be over us) בְּחַטֹּאותֵ֑ינוּ (in our sins),

וְעַ֣ל (and over) גְּ֠וִיֹּתֵינוּ (our bodies) מֹשְׁלִ֤ים (to be ruling),

וּבִבְהֶמְתֵּ֙נוּ֙ (and over our livestock), כִּרְצוֹנָ֔ם (according to their pleasure),

וּבְצָרָ֥ה (and in distress) גְדוֹלָ֖ה (great) אֲנָֽחְנוּ׃פ (we are).

38  וּבְכָל־ (And in all) זֹ֕את (this) אֲנַ֛חְנוּ (we) כֹּרְתִ֥ים (are cutting) אֲמָנָ֖ה (a firm covenant) וְכֹתְבִ֑ים (and writing) וְעַל֙ (even on) הֶֽחָת֔וּם (the sealed document) שָׂרֵ֥ינוּ (our leaders), לְוִיֵּ֖נוּ (our Levites), כֹּהֲנֵֽינוּ׃ (and our priests).
