How lonely lies the city, once so full of people! She who was great among the nations has become like a widow. The princess of the provinces has become a slave.
Look, O LORD, and consider: Whom have You ever treated like this? Should women eat their offspring, the infants they have nurtured? Should priests and prophets be killed in the sanctuary of the Lord?
Those near and far will mock you, O infamous city, full of turmoil.
This carefree city that dwells securely, that thinks to herself: 'I am it, and there is none besides me,' what a ruin she has become, a resting place for beasts. Everyone who passes by her hisses and shakes his fist.
