Then Pilate took Jesus and had Him flogged.1Τότε οὖν ἔλαβεν Πιλᾶτος τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ ἐμαστίγωσεν
The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns, set it on His head, and dressed Him in a purple robe.2καὶ οἱ στρατιῶται πλέξαντες στέφανον ἐξ ἀκανθῶν ἐπέθηκαν αὐτοῦ τῇ κεφαλῇ καὶ ἱμάτιον πορφυροῦν περιέβαλον αὐτόν
And they went up to Him again and again, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and slapping Him in the face.3καὶ ἤρχοντο πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ ἔλεγον Χαῖρε Βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων καὶ ἐδίδοσαν αὐτῷ ῥαπίσματα
Once again Pilate came out and said to the Jews, “Look, I am bringing Him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against Him.”4Καὶ ἐξῆλθεν πάλιν ἔξω Πιλᾶτος καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς Ἴδε ἄγω ὑμῖν αὐτὸν ἔξω ἵνα γνῶτε ὅτι οὐδεμίαν αἰτίαν εὑρίσκω ἐν αὐτῷ
When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!”5ἐξῆλθεν οὖν Ἰησοῦς ἔξω φορῶν τὸν ἀκάνθινον στέφανον καὶ τὸ πορφυροῦν ἱμάτιον καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς Ἰδοὺ ἄνθρωπος
As soon as the chief priests and officers saw Him, they shouted, “Crucify Him! Crucify Him!” “You take Him and crucify Him,” Pilate replied, “for I find no basis for a charge against Him.”6Ὅτε οὖν εἶδον αὐτὸν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ ὑπηρέται ἐκραύγασαν λέγοντες Σταύρωσον σταύρωσον Λέγει αὐτοῖς Πιλᾶτος Λάβετε αὐτὸν ὑμεῖς καὶ σταυρώσατε ἐγὼ γὰρ οὐχ εὑρίσκω ἐν αὐτῷ αἰτίαν
“We have a law,” answered the Jews, “and according to that law He must die, because He declared Himself to be the Son of God.”7Ἀπεκρίθησαν αὐτῷ οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι Ἡμεῖς νόμον ἔχομεν καὶ κατὰ τὸν νόμον ὀφείλει ἀποθανεῖν ὅτι Υἱὸν Θεοῦ ἑαυτὸν ἐποίησεν
When Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid,8Ὅτε οὖν ἤκουσεν Πιλᾶτος τοῦτον τὸν λόγον μᾶλλον ἐφοβήθη
and he went back into the Praetorium. “Where are You from?” he asked.
So Pilate said to Him, “Do You refuse to speak to me? Do You not know that I have authority to release You and authority to crucify You?”10Λέγει οὖν αὐτῷ Πιλᾶτος Ἐμοὶ οὐ λαλεῖς οὐκ οἶδας ὅτι ἐξουσίαν ἔχω ἀπολῦσαί σε καὶ ἐξουσίαν ἔχω σταυρῶσαί σε
Jesus answered, “You would have no authority over Me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed Me over to you is guilty of greater sin.”11Ἀπεκρίθη ‹αὐτῷ› Ἰησοῦς Οὐκ εἶχες ἐξουσίαν κατ’ ἐμοῦ οὐδεμίαν εἰ μὴ ἦν δεδομένον σοι ἄνωθεν διὰ τοῦτο παραδούς μέ σοι μείζονα ἁμαρτίαν ἔχει
From then on, Pilate tried to release Him, but the Jews kept shouting, “If you release this man, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who declares himself a king is defying Caesar.”12Ἐκ τούτου Πιλᾶτος ἐζήτει ἀπολῦσαι αὐτόν οἱ δὲ Ἰουδαῖοι ἐκραύγασαν λέγοντες Ἐὰν τοῦτον ἀπολύσῃς οὐκ εἶ φίλος τοῦ Καίσαρος πᾶς βασιλέα ἑαυτὸν ποιῶν ἀντιλέγει τῷ Καίσαρι
When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat on the judgment seat at a place called the Stone Pavement, which in Hebrew is Gabbatha.13 οὖν Πιλᾶτος ἀκούσας τῶν λόγων τούτων ἤγαγεν ἔξω τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ ἐκάθισεν ἐπὶ βήματος εἰς τόπον λεγόμενον Λιθόστρωτον Ἑβραϊστὶ δὲ Γαββαθα
It was the day of Preparation for the Passover, about the sixth hour. And Pilate said to the Jews, “Here is your King!”14ἦν δὲ Παρασκευὴ τοῦ πάσχα ὥρα ἦν ὡς ἕκτη καὶ λέγει τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις Ἴδε Βασιλεὺς ὑμῶν
At this, they shouted, “Away with Him! Away with Him! Crucify Him!” “Shall I crucify your King?” Pilate asked. “We have no king but Caesar,” replied the chief priests.15Ἐκραύγασαν οὖν Ἐκεῖνοι Ἆρον ἆρον σταύρωσον αὐτόν Λέγει αὐτοῖς Πιλᾶτος Τὸν Βασιλέα ὑμῶν σταυρώσω Ἀπεκρίθησαν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς Οὐκ ἔχομεν βασιλέα εἰ μὴ Καίσαρα
Then Pilate handed Jesus over to be crucified, and the soldiers took Him away.16Τότε οὖν παρέδωκεν αὐτὸν αὐτοῖς ἵνα σταυρωθῇ Παρέλαβον οὖν τὸν Ἰησοῦν
Carrying His own cross, He went out to The Place of the Skull, which in Hebrew is called Golgotha.17Καὶ βαστάζων ἑαυτῷ τὸν σταυρὸν ἐξῆλθεν εἰς τὸν λεγόμενον Κρανίου τόπον λέγεται Ἑβραϊστὶ Γολγοθᾶ
There they crucified Him, and with Him two others, one on each side, with Jesus in the middle.18ὅπου αὐτὸν ἐσταύρωσαν καὶ μετ’ αὐτοῦ ἄλλους δύο ἐντεῦθεν καὶ ἐντεῦθεν μέσον δὲ τὸν Ἰησοῦν
Pilate also had a notice posted on the cross. It read: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.19Ἔγραψεν δὲ καὶ τίτλον Πιλᾶτος καὶ ἔθηκεν ἐπὶ τοῦ σταυροῦ ἦν δὲ γεγραμμένον ΙΗΣΟΥΣ Ο* ΝΑΖΩΡΑΙΟΣ Ο* ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥΣ ΤΩΝ ΙΟΥΔΑΙΩΝ
Many of the Jews read this sign, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek.20Τοῦτον οὖν τὸν τίτλον πολλοὶ ἀνέγνωσαν τῶν Ἰουδαίων ὅτι ἐγγὺς ἦν τόπος τῆς πόλεως ὅπου ἐσταυρώθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ ἦν γεγραμμένον Ἑβραϊστί Ῥωμαϊστί Ἑλληνιστί
So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but only that He said, ‘I am the King of the Jews.’ ”21ἔλεγον οὖν τῷ Πιλάτῳ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς τῶν Ἰουδαίων Μὴ γράφε Βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων ἀλλ’ ὅτι ἐκεῖνος εἶπεν Βασιλεύς εἰμι «τῶν Ἰουδαίων»
Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”22Ἀπεκρίθη Πιλᾶτος γέγραφα γέγραφα
When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they divided His garments into four parts, one for each soldier, with the tunic remaining. It was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.23Οἱ οὖν στρατιῶται ὅτε ἐσταύρωσαν τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἔλαβον τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐποίησαν τέσσαρα μέρη ἑκάστῳ στρατιώτῃ μέρος καὶ τὸν χιτῶνα ἦν δὲ χιτὼν ἄραφος ἐκ τῶν ἄνωθεν ὑφαντὸς δι’ ὅλου
So they said to one another, “Let us not tear it. Instead, let us cast lots to see who will get it.” This was to fulfill the Scripture: “They divided My garments among them, and cast lots for My clothing.” So that is what the soldiers did.24εἶπαν οὖν πρὸς ἀλλήλους Μὴ σχίσωμεν αὐτόν ἀλλὰ λάχωμεν περὶ αὐτοῦ τίνος ἔσται ἵνα γραφὴ πληρωθῇ ‹ἡ λέγουσα› Διεμερίσαντο τὰ ἱμάτιά μου ἑαυτοῖς καὶ ἐπὶ τὸν ἱματισμόν μου ἔβαλον κλῆρον Οἱ μὲν οὖν στρατιῶται ταῦτα ἐποίησαν
Near the cross of Jesus stood His mother and her sister, as well as Mary the wife of Clopas and Mary Magdalene.25Εἱστήκεισαν δὲ παρὰ τῷ σταυρῷ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ μήτηρ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀδελφὴ τῆς μητρὸς αὐτοῦ Μαρία τοῦ Κλωπᾶ καὶ Μαρία Μαγδαληνή
When Jesus saw His mother and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Woman, here is your son.”26Ἰησοῦς οὖν ἰδὼν τὴν μητέρα καὶ τὸν μαθητὴν παρεστῶτα ὃν ἠγάπα λέγει τῇ μητρί Γύναι ἴδε υἱός σου
Then He said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” So from that hour, this disciple took her into his home.27εἶτα λέγει τῷ μαθητῇ Ἴδε μήτηρ σου καὶ ἀπ’ ἐκείνης τῆς ὥρας ἔλαβεν μαθητὴς αὐτὴν εἰς τὰ ἴδια
After this, knowing that everything had now been accomplished, and to fulfill the Scripture, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.”28Μετὰ τοῦτο εἰδὼς Ἰησοῦς ὅτι ἤδη πάντα τετέλεσται ἵνα τελειωθῇ γραφὴ λέγει Διψῶ
A jar of sour wine was sitting there. So they soaked a sponge in the wine, put it on a stalk of hyssop, and lifted it to His mouth.29σκεῦος ἔκειτο ὄξους μεστόν σπόγγον οὖν μεστὸν τοῦ ὄξους ὑσσώπῳ περιθέντες προσήνεγκαν αὐτοῦ τῷ στόματι
When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished.” And bowing His head, He yielded up His spirit.30ὅτε οὖν ἔλαβεν τὸ ὄξος Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν Τετέλεσται καὶ κλίνας τὴν κεφαλὴν παρέδωκεν τὸ πνεῦμα
It was the day of Preparation, and the next day was a High Sabbath. In order that the bodies would not remain on the cross during the Sabbath, the Jews asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies removed.31Οἱ οὖν Ἰουδαῖοι ἐπεὶ Παρασκευὴ ἦν ἵνα μὴ μείνῃ ἐπὶ τοῦ σταυροῦ τὰ σώματα ἐν τῷ σαββάτῳ ἦν γὰρ μεγάλη ἡμέρα ἐκείνου τοῦ σαββάτου ἠρώτησαν τὸν Πιλᾶτον ἵνα κατεαγῶσιν αὐτῶν τὰ σκέλη καὶ ἀρθῶσιν
So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and those of the other.32ἦλθον οὖν οἱ στρατιῶται καὶ τοῦ μὲν πρώτου κατέαξαν τὰ σκέλη καὶ τοῦ ἄλλου τοῦ συσταυρωθέντος αὐτῷ
But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs.33ἐπὶ δὲ τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἐλθόντες ὡς εἶδον ἤδη αὐτὸν τεθνηκότα οὐ κατέαξαν αὐτοῦ τὰ σκέλη
Instead, one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water flowed out.34ἀλλ’ εἷς τῶν στρατιωτῶν λόγχῃ αὐτοῦ τὴν πλευρὰν ἔνυξεν καὶ ἐξῆλθεν εὐθὺς αἷμα καὶ ὕδωρ
The one who saw it has testified to this, and his testimony is true. He knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe.35καὶ ἑωρακὼς μεμαρτύρηκεν καὶ ἀληθινὴ αὐτοῦ ἐστιν μαρτυρία καὶ ἐκεῖνος οἶδεν ὅτι ἀληθῆ λέγει ἵνα καὶ ὑμεῖς πιστεύητε
Now these things happened so that the Scripture would be fulfilled: “Not one of His bones will be broken.”36Ἐγένετο γὰρ ταῦτα ἵνα γραφὴ πληρωθῇ Ὀστοῦν οὐ συντριβήσεται αὐτοῦ
And, as another Scripture says: “They will look on the One they have pierced.”37καὶ πάλιν ἑτέρα γραφὴ λέγει Ὄψονται εἰς ὃν ἐξεκέντησαν
Afterward, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus (but secretly for fear of the Jews), asked Pilate to let him remove the body of Jesus. Pilate gave him permission, so he came and removed His body.38Μετὰ δὲ ταῦτα ἠρώτησεν τὸν Πιλᾶτον Ἰωσὴφ [ὁ] ἀπὸ Ἁριμαθαίας ὢν μαθητὴς τοῦ Ἰησοῦ κεκρυμμένος δὲ διὰ τὸν φόβον τῶν Ἰουδαίων ἵνα ἄρῃ τὸ σῶμα τοῦ Ἰησοῦ καὶ ἐπέτρεψεν Πιλᾶτος ἦλθεν οὖν καὶ ἦρεν τὸ σῶμα αὐτοῦ
Nicodemus, who had previously come to Jesus at night, also brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds.39ἦλθεν δὲ καὶ Νικόδημος ἐλθὼν πρὸς αὐτὸν νυκτὸς τὸ πρῶτον φέρων μίγμα σμύρνης καὶ ἀλόης ὡς λίτρας ἑκατόν
So they took the body of Jesus and wrapped it in linen cloths with the spices, according to the Jewish burial custom.40ἔλαβον οὖν τὸ σῶμα τοῦ Ἰησοῦ καὶ ἔδησαν αὐτὸ ὀθονίοις μετὰ τῶν ἀρωμάτων καθὼς ἔθος ἐστὶν τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις ἐνταφιάζειν
Now there was a garden in the place where Jesus was crucified, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid.41Ἦν δὲ ἐν τῷ τόπῳ ὅπου ἐσταυρώθη κῆπος καὶ ἐν τῷ κήπῳ μνημεῖον καινόν ἐν οὐδέπω οὐδεὶς ἦν τεθειμένος
And because it was the Jewish day of Preparation and the tomb was nearby, they placed Jesus there.42ἐκεῖ οὖν διὰ τὴν Παρασκευὴν τῶν Ἰουδαίων ὅτι ἐγγὺς ἦν τὸ μνημεῖον ἔθηκαν τὸν Ἰησοῦν
