Christian Standard BibleEnglish Standard Version
As soon as it was morning, having held a meeting with the elders, scribes, and the whole Sanhedrin, the chief priests tied Jesus up, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate.1And as soon as it was morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council. And they bound Jesus and led him away and delivered him over to Pilate.
So Pilate asked him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" He answered him, "You say so."2And Pilate asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, “You have said so.”
And the chief priests accused him of many things.3And the chief priests accused him of many things.
Pilate questioned him again, "Aren't you going to answer? Look how many things they are accusing you of!"4And Pilate again asked him, “Have you no answer to make? See how many charges they bring against you.”
But Jesus still did not answer, and so Pilate was amazed.5But Jesus made no further answer, so that Pilate was amazed.
At the festival Pilate used to release for the people a prisoner whom they requested.6Now at the feast he used to release for them one prisoner for whom they asked.
There was one named Barabbas, who was in prison with rebels who had committed murder during the rebellion.7And among the rebels in prison, who had committed murder in the insurrection, there was a man called Barabbas.
The crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do for them as was his custom.8And the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do as he usually did for them.
Pilate answered them, "Do you want me to release the King of the Jews for you?"9And he answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?”
For he knew it was because of envy that the chief priests had handed him over.10For he perceived that it was out of envy that the chief priests had delivered him up.
But the chief priests stirred up the crowd so that he would release Barabbas to them instead.11But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release for them Barabbas instead.
Pilate asked them again, "Then what do you want me to do with the one you call the King of the Jews?"12And Pilate again said to them, “Then what shall I do with the man you call the King of the Jews?”
Again they shouted, "Crucify him!"13And they cried out again, “Crucify him.”
Pilate said to them, "Why? What has he done wrong?" But they shouted all the more, "Crucify him!"14And Pilate said to them, “Why? What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him.”
Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them; and after having Jesus flogged, he handed him over to be crucified.15So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.
The soldiers led him away into the palace (that is, the governor's residence) and called the whole company together.16And the soldiers led him away inside the palace (that is, the governor’s headquarters), and they called together the whole battalion.
They dressed him in a purple robe, twisted together a crown of thorns, and put it on him.17And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him.
And they began to salute him, "Hail, King of the Jews!"18And they began to salute him, “Hail, King of the Jews!”
They were hitting him on the head with a stick and spitting on him. Getting down on their knees, they were paying him homage.19And they were striking his head with a reed and spitting on him and kneeling down in homage to him.
After they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple robe and put his clothes on him. They led him out to crucify him.20And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they led him out to crucify him.
They forced a man coming in from the country, who was passing by, to carry Jesus's cross. He was Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus.21And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross.
They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of the Skull).22And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull).
They tried to give him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it.23And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it.
Then they crucified him and divided his clothes, casting lots for them to decide what each would get.24And they crucified him and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take.
Now it was nine in the morning when they crucified him.25And it was the third hour when they crucified him.
The inscription of the charge written against him was: THE KING OF THE JEWS.26And the inscription of the charge against him read, “The King of the Jews.”
They crucified two criminals with him, one on his right and one on his left.27And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left.

Those who passed by were yelling insults at him, shaking their heads, and saying, "Ha! The one who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,29And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,
save yourself by coming down from the cross!"30save yourself, and come down from the cross!”
In the same way, the chief priests with the scribes were mocking him among themselves and saying, "He saved others, but he cannot save himself!31So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, “He saved others; he cannot save himself.
Let the Messiah, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe." Even those who were crucified with him taunted him.32Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may see and believe.” Those who were crucified with him also reviled him.
When it was noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.33And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.
And at three Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani? " which is translated, "My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? "34And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
When some of those standing there heard this, they said, "See, he's calling for Elijah."35And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.”
Someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, fixed it on a stick, offered him a drink, and said, "Let's see if Elijah comes to take him down."36And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.”
Jesus let out a loud cry and breathed his last.37And Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed his last.
Then the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.38And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.
When the centurion, who was standing opposite him, saw the way he breathed his last, he said, "Truly this man was the Son of God!"39And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”
There were also women watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome.40There were also women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome.
In Galilee these women followed him and took care of him. Many other women had come up with him to Jerusalem.41When he was in Galilee, they followed him and ministered to him, and there were also many other women who came up with him to Jerusalem.
When it was already evening, because it was the day of preparation (that is, the day before the Sabbath),42And when evening had come, since it was the day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath,
Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Sanhedrin who was himself looking forward to the kingdom of God, came and boldly went to Pilate and asked for Jesus's body.43Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
Pilate was surprised that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he had already died.44Pilate was surprised to hear that he should have already died. And summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he was already dead.
When he found out from the centurion, he gave the corpse to Joseph.45And when he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he granted the corpse to Joseph.
After he bought some linen cloth, Joseph took him down and wrapped him in the linen. Then he laid him in a tomb cut out of the rock and rolled a stone against the entrance to the tomb.46And Joseph bought a linen shroud, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen shroud and laid him in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock. And he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.
Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were watching where he was laid.47Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid.
