1As soon as it was morning, having held a meeting with the elders, scribes, and the whole Sanhedrin, the chief priests tied Jesus up, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate.1Καὶ εὐθὺς πρωῒ συμβούλιον ποιήσαντες* οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς μετὰ τῶν πρεσβυτέρων καὶ γραμματέων καὶ ὅλον τὸ συνέδριον δήσαντες τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἀπήνεγκαν καὶ παρέδωκαν Πιλάτῳ
2So Pilate asked him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" He answered him, "You say so."2Καὶ ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτὸν Πιλᾶτος Σὺ εἶ Βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς αὐτῷ λέγει Σὺ λέγεις
3And the chief priests accused him of many things.3Καὶ κατηγόρουν αὐτοῦ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς πολλά
4Pilate questioned him again, "Aren't you going to answer? Look how many things they are accusing you of!"4 δὲ Πιλᾶτος πάλιν ἐπηρώτα αὐτὸν λέγων Οὐκ ἀποκρίνῃ οὐδέν ἴδε πόσα σου κατηγοροῦσιν
5But Jesus still did not answer, and so Pilate was amazed.5 δὲ Ἰησοῦς οὐκέτι οὐδὲν ἀπεκρίθη ὥστε θαυμάζειν τὸν Πιλᾶτον
6At the festival Pilate used to release for the people a prisoner whom they requested.6Κατὰ δὲ ἑορτὴν ἀπέλυεν αὐτοῖς ἕνα δέσμιον ὃν παρῃτοῦντο
7There was one named Barabbas, who was in prison with rebels who had committed murder during the rebellion.7ἦν δὲ λεγόμενος Βαραββᾶς μετὰ τῶν στασιαστῶν δεδεμένος οἵτινες ἐν τῇ στάσει φόνον πεποιήκεισαν
8The crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do for them as was his custom.8καὶ ἀναβὰς ὄχλος ἤρξατο αἰτεῖσθαι καθὼς ἐποίει αὐτοῖς
9Pilate answered them, "Do you want me to release the King of the Jews for you?"9 δὲ Πιλᾶτος ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς λέγων Θέλετε ἀπολύσω ὑμῖν τὸν Βασιλέα τῶν Ἰουδαίων
10For he knew it was because of envy that the chief priests had handed him over.10ἐγίνωσκεν γὰρ ὅτι διὰ φθόνον παραδεδώκεισαν αὐτὸν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς
11But the chief priests stirred up the crowd so that he would release Barabbas to them instead.11Οἱ δὲ ἀρχιερεῖς ἀνέσεισαν τὸν ὄχλον ἵνα μᾶλλον τὸν Βαραββᾶν ἀπολύσῃ αὐτοῖς
12Pilate asked them again, "Then what do you want me to do with the one you call the King of the Jews?"12 δὲ Πιλᾶτος πάλιν ἀποκριθεὶς ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς Τί οὖν ‹θέλετε› ποιήσω ὃν λέγετε τὸν Βασιλέα τῶν Ἰουδαίων
13Again they shouted, "Crucify him!"13Οἱ δὲ πάλιν ἔκραξαν Σταύρωσον αὐτόν
14Pilate said to them, "Why? What has he done wrong?" But they shouted all the more, "Crucify him!"14 δὲ Πιλᾶτος ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς Τί γὰρ ἐποίησεν κακόν Οἱ δὲ περισσῶς ἔκραξαν Σταύρωσον αὐτόν
15Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them; and after having Jesus flogged, he handed him over to be crucified.15 δὲ Πιλᾶτος βουλόμενος τῷ ὄχλῳ τὸ ἱκανὸν ποιῆσαι ἀπέλυσεν αὐτοῖς τὸν Βαραββᾶν καὶ παρέδωκεν τὸν Ἰησοῦν φραγελλώσας ἵνα σταυρωθῇ
16The soldiers led him away into the palace (that is, the governor's residence) and called the whole company together.16Οἱ δὲ στρατιῶται ἀπήγαγον αὐτὸν ἔσω τῆς αὐλῆς ἐστιν Πραιτώριον καὶ συνκαλοῦσιν ὅλην τὴν σπεῖραν
17They dressed him in a purple robe, twisted together a crown of thorns, and put it on him.17καὶ ἐνδιδύσκουσιν αὐτὸν πορφύραν καὶ περιτιθέασιν αὐτῷ πλέξαντες ἀκάνθινον στέφανον
18And they began to salute him, "Hail, King of the Jews!"18καὶ ἤρξαντο ἀσπάζεσθαι αὐτόν Χαῖρε Βασιλεῦ τῶν Ἰουδαίων
19They were hitting him on the head with a stick and spitting on him. Getting down on their knees, they were paying him homage.19Καὶ ἔτυπτον αὐτοῦ τὴν κεφαλὴν καλάμῳ καὶ ἐνέπτυον αὐτῷ καὶ τιθέντες τὰ γόνατα προσεκύνουν αὐτῷ
20After they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple robe and put his clothes on him. They led him out to crucify him.20καὶ ὅτε ἐνέπαιξαν αὐτῷ ἐξέδυσαν αὐτὸν τὴν πορφύραν καὶ ἐνέδυσαν αὐτὸν τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ ‹ἴδια› Καὶ ἐξάγουσιν αὐτὸν ἵνα σταυρώσωσιν αὐτόν
21They forced a man coming in from the country, who was passing by, to carry Jesus's cross. He was Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus.21Καὶ ἀγγαρεύουσιν παράγοντά τινα Σίμωνα Κυρηναῖον ἐρχόμενον ἀπ’ ἀγροῦ τὸν πατέρα Ἀλεξάνδρου καὶ Ῥούφου ἵνα ἄρῃ τὸν σταυρὸν αὐτοῦ
22They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of the Skull).22Καὶ φέρουσιν αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τὸν Γολγοθᾶν τόπον ἐστιν μεθερμηνευόμενον* Κρανίου τόπος
23They tried to give him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it.23καὶ ἐδίδουν αὐτῷ ἐσμυρνισμένον οἶνον ὃς δὲ οὐκ ἔλαβεν
24Then they crucified him and divided his clothes, casting lots for them to decide what each would get.24Καὶ σταυροῦσιν αὐτὸν καὶ διαμερίζονται τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ βάλλοντες κλῆρον ἐπ’ αὐτὰ τίς τί ἄρῃ
25Now it was nine in the morning when they crucified him.25Ἦν δὲ ὥρα τρίτη καὶ ἐσταύρωσαν αὐτόν
26The inscription of the charge written against him was: THE KING OF THE JEWS.26καὶ ἦν ἐπιγραφὴ τῆς αἰτίας αὐτοῦ ἐπιγεγραμμένη Ο* ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥΣ ΤΩΝ ΙΟΥΔΑΙΩΝ
27They crucified two criminals with him, one on his right and one on his left.27Καὶ σὺν αὐτῷ σταυροῦσιν δύο λῃστάς ἕνα ἐκ δεξιῶν καὶ ἕνα ἐξ εὐωνύμων αὐτοῦ
2828⧼Καὶ ἐπληρώθη γραφὴ λέγουσα Καὶ μετὰ ἀνόμων ἐλογίσθη⧽
29Those who passed by were yelling insults at him, shaking their heads, and saying, "Ha! The one who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,29Καὶ οἱ παραπορευόμενοι ἐβλασφήμουν αὐτὸν κινοῦντες τὰς κεφαλὰς αὐτῶν καὶ λέγοντες Οὐὰ καταλύων τὸν ναὸν καὶ οἰκοδομῶν ἐν τρισὶν ἡμέραις
30save yourself by coming down from the cross!"30σῶσον σεαυτὸν καταβὰς ἀπὸ τοῦ σταυροῦ
31In the same way, the chief priests with the scribes were mocking him among themselves and saying, "He saved others, but he cannot save himself!31Ὁμοίως καὶ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς ἐμπαίζοντες πρὸς ἀλλήλους μετὰ τῶν γραμματέων ἔλεγον Ἄλλους ἔσωσεν ἑαυτὸν οὐ δύναται σῶσαι
32Let the Messiah, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe." Even those who were crucified with him taunted him.32 Χριστὸς Βασιλεὺς Ἰσραὴλ καταβάτω νῦν ἀπὸ τοῦ σταυροῦ ἵνα ἴδωμεν καὶ πιστεύσωμεν καὶ οἱ συνεσταυρωμένοι σὺν αὐτῷ ὠνείδιζον αὐτόν
33When it was noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.33Καὶ γενομένης ὥρας ἕκτης σκότος ἐγένετο ἐφ’ ὅλην τὴν γῆν ἕως ὥρας ἐνάτης
34And at three Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani? " which is translated, "My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? "34καὶ τῇ ἐνάτῃ ὥρᾳ ἐβόησεν Ἰησοῦς φωνῇ μεγάλῃ Ἐλωῒ Ἐλωῒ λεμὰ* σαβαχθάνι* ἐστιν μεθερμηνευόμενον Θεός μου Θεός μου εἰς τί ἐγκατέλιπές με
35When some of those standing there heard this, they said, "See, he's calling for Elijah."35Καί τινες τῶν παρεστηκότων ἀκούσαντες ἔλεγον Ἴδε Ἠλίαν φωνεῖ
36Someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, fixed it on a stick, offered him a drink, and said, "Let's see if Elijah comes to take him down."36Δραμὼν δέ τις καὶ γεμίσας σπόγγον ὄξους περιθεὶς καλάμῳ ἐπότιζεν αὐτόν λέγων Ἄφετε ἴδωμεν εἰ ἔρχεται Ἠλίας καθελεῖν αὐτόν
37Jesus let out a loud cry and breathed his last.37 δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἀφεὶς φωνὴν μεγάλην ἐξέπνευσεν
38Then the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.38Καὶ τὸ καταπέτασμα τοῦ ναοῦ ἐσχίσθη εἰς δύο ἀπ’ ἄνωθεν ἕως κάτω
39When the centurion, who was standing opposite him, saw the way he breathed his last, he said, "Truly this man was the Son of God!"39Ἰδὼν δὲ κεντυρίων παρεστηκὼς ἐξ ἐναντίας αὐτοῦ ὅτι οὕτως ἐξέπνευσεν εἶπεν Ἀληθῶς οὗτος ἄνθρωπος Υἱὸς Θεοῦ ἦν
40There were also women watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome.40Ἦσαν δὲ καὶ γυναῖκες ἀπὸ μακρόθεν θεωροῦσαι ἐν αἷς καὶ Μαρία Μαγδαληνὴ καὶ Μαρία Ἰακώβου τοῦ μικροῦ καὶ Ἰωσῆτος μήτηρ καὶ Σαλώμη
41In Galilee these women followed him and took care of him. Many other women had come up with him to Jerusalem.41αἳ ὅτε ἦν ἐν τῇ Γαλιλαίᾳ ἠκολούθουν αὐτῷ καὶ διηκόνουν αὐτῷ καὶ ἄλλαι πολλαὶ αἱ συναναβᾶσαι αὐτῷ εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα
42When it was already evening, because it was the day of preparation (that is, the day before the Sabbath),42Καὶ ἤδη ὀψίας γενομένης ἐπεὶ ἦν Παρασκευή ἐστιν προσάββατον
43Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Sanhedrin who was himself looking forward to the kingdom of God, came and boldly went to Pilate and asked for Jesus's body.43ἐλθὼν Ἰωσὴφ ἀπὸ Ἁριμαθαίας εὐσχήμων βουλευτής ὃς καὶ αὐτὸς ἦν προσδεχόμενος τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ Θεοῦ τολμήσας εἰσῆλθεν πρὸς τὸν Πιλᾶτον καὶ ᾐτήσατο τὸ σῶμα τοῦ Ἰησοῦ
44Pilate was surprised that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he had already died.44 δὲ Πιλᾶτος ἐθαύμασεν εἰ ἤδη τέθνηκεν καὶ προσκαλεσάμενος τὸν κεντυρίωνα ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτὸν εἰ πάλαι ἀπέθανεν
45When he found out from the centurion, he gave the corpse to Joseph.45καὶ γνοὺς ἀπὸ τοῦ κεντυρίωνος ἐδωρήσατο τὸ πτῶμα τῷ Ἰωσήφ
46After he bought some linen cloth, Joseph took him down and wrapped him in the linen. Then he laid him in a tomb cut out of the rock and rolled a stone against the entrance to the tomb.46Καὶ ἀγοράσας σινδόνα καθελὼν αὐτὸν ἐνείλησεν τῇ σινδόνι καὶ ἔθηκεν* αὐτὸν ἐν μνημείῳ* ἦν λελατομημένον ἐκ πέτρας καὶ προσεκύλισεν λίθον ἐπὶ τὴν θύραν τοῦ μνημείου
47Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were watching where he was laid.47 δὲ Μαρία Μαγδαληνὴ καὶ Μαρία Ἰωσῆτος ἐθεώρουν ποῦ τέθειται
