Holman Christian Standard BibleEnglish Standard Version
He entered Jericho and was passing through. 1He entered Jericho and was passing through.
There was a man named Zacchaeus who was a chief tax collector, and he was rich. 2And behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector and was rich.
He was trying to see who Jesus was, but he was not able because of the crowd, since he was a short man.3And he was seeking to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was small in stature.
So running ahead, he climbed up a sycamore tree to see Jesus, since He was about to pass that way.4So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was about to pass that way.
When Jesus came to the place, He looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, hurry and come down because today I must stay at your house." 5And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.”
So he quickly came down and welcomed Him joyfully. 6So he hurried and came down and received him joyfully.
All who saw it began to complain, "He's gone to lodge with a sinful man!" 7And when they saw it, they all grumbled, “He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.”
But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, "Look, I'll give half of my possessions to the poor, Lord! And if I have extorted anything from anyone, I'll pay back four times as much!" 8And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.”
"Today salvation has come to this house," Jesus told him, "because he too is a son of Abraham. 9And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham.
For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save the lost." 10For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
As they were listening to this, He went on to tell a parable because He was near Jerusalem, and they thought the kingdom of God was going to appear right away. 11As they heard these things, he proceeded to tell a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem, and because they supposed that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately.
Therefore He said: "A nobleman traveled to a far country to receive for himself authority to be king and then return. 12He said therefore, “A nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and then return.
He called 10 of his slaves, gave them 10 minas, and told them, Engage in business until I come back.' 13Calling ten of his servants, he gave them ten minas, and said to them, ‘Engage in business until I come.’
"But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, We don't want this man to rule over us!' 14But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man to reign over us.’
"At his return, having received the authority to be king, he summoned those slaves he had given the money to, so he could find out how much they had made in business. 15When he returned, having received the kingdom, he ordered these servants to whom he had given the money to be called to him, that he might know what they had gained by doing business.
The first came forward and said, Master, your mina has earned 10 more minas.' 16The first came before him, saying, ‘Lord, your mina has made ten minas more.’
"Well done, good slave!' he told him. Because you have been faithful in a very small matter, have authority over 10 towns.' 17And he said to him, ‘Well done, good servant! Because you have been faithful in a very little, you shall have authority over ten cities.’
"The second came and said, Master, your mina has made five minas.' 18And the second came, saying, ‘Lord, your mina has made five minas.’
"So he said to him, You will be over five towns.' 19And he said to him, ‘And you are to be over five cities.’
"And another came and said, Master, here is your mina. I have kept it hidden away in a cloth20Then another came, saying, ‘Lord, here is your mina, which I kept laid away in a handkerchief;
because I was afraid of you, for you're a tough man: you collect what you didn't deposit and reap what you didn't sow.' 21for I was afraid of you, because you are a severe man. You take what you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.’
"He told him, I will judge you by what you have said, you evil slave! If you knew I was a tough man, collecting what I didn't deposit and reaping what I didn't sow, 22He said to him, ‘I will condemn you with your own words, you wicked servant! You knew that I was a severe man, taking what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow?
why didn't you put my money in the bank? And when I returned, I would have collected it with interest!'23Why then did you not put my money in the bank, and at my coming I might have collected it with interest?’
So he said to those standing there, Take the mina away from him and give it to the one who has 10 minas.' 24And he said to those who stood by, ‘Take the mina from him, and give it to the one who has the ten minas.’
"But they said to him, Master, he has 10 minas.' 25And they said to him, ‘Lord, he has ten minas!’
"I tell you, that to everyone who has, more will be given; and from the one who does not have, even what he does have will be taken away. 26‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.
But bring here these enemies of mine, who did not want me to rule over them, and slaughter them in my presence.'" 27But as for these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slaughter them before me.’”
When He had said these things, He went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.28And when he had said these things, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.
As He approached Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, He sent two of the disciples29When he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount that is called Olivet, he sent two of the disciples,
and said, "Go into the village ahead of you. As you enter it, you will find a young donkey tied there, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it here.30saying, “Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat. Untie it and bring it here.
If anyone asks you, Why are you untying it?' say this: The Lord needs it.'" 31If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say this: ‘The Lord has need of it.’”
So those who were sent left and found it just as He had told them.32So those who were sent went away and found it just as he had told them.
As they were untying the young donkey, its owners said to them, "Why are you untying the donkey?"" 33And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?”
The Lord needs it," they said. 34And they said, “The Lord has need of it.”
Then they brought it to Jesus, and after throwing their robes on the donkey, they helped Jesus get on it.35And they brought it to Jesus, and throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it.
As He was going along, they were spreading their robes on the road.36And as he rode along, they spread their cloaks on the road.
Now He came near the path down the Mount of Olives, and the whole crowd of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles they had seen: 37As he was drawing near—already on the way down the Mount of Olives—the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen,
The King who comes in the name of the Lord is the blessed One. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest heaven! 38saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
Some of the Pharisees from the crowd told Him, "Teacher, rebuke Your disciples." 39And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.”
He answered, "I tell you, if they were to keep silent, the stones would cry out!" 40He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”
As He approached and saw the city, He wept over it, 41And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it,
saying, "If you knew this day what would bring peace--but now it is hidden from your eyes. 42saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.
For the days will come on you when your enemies will build an embankment against you, surround you, and hem you in on every side. 43For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side
They will crush you and your children within you to the ground, and they will not leave one stone on another in you, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation." 44and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”
He went into the temple complex and began to throw out those who were selling,45And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold,
and He said, "It is written, My house will be a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves!" 46saying to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a den of robbers.”
Every day He was teaching in the temple complex. The chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people were looking for a way to destroy Him, 47And he was teaching daily in the temple. The chief priests and the scribes and the principal men of the people were seeking to destroy him,
but they could not find a way to do it, because all the people were captivated by what they heard. 48but they did not find anything they could do, for all the people were hanging on his words.
