1He entered Jericho and was passing through.

1Καὶ εἰσελθὼν διήρχετο τὴν Ἰεριχώ

2There was a man named Zacchaeus who was a chief tax collector, and he was rich.

2Καὶ ἰδοὺ ἀνὴρ ὀνόματι καλούμενος Ζακχαῖος καὶ αὐτὸς ἦν ἀρχιτελώνης καὶ αὐτὸς πλούσιος

3He was trying to see who Jesus was, but he was not able because of the crowd, since he was a short man.

3καὶ ἐζήτει ἰδεῖν τὸν Ἰησοῦν τίς ἐστιν καὶ οὐκ ἠδύνατο ἀπὸ τοῦ ὄχλου ὅτι τῇ ἡλικίᾳ μικρὸς ἦν

4So running ahead, he climbed up a sycamore tree to see Jesus, since He was about to pass that way.

4καὶ προδραμὼν εἰς τὸ ἔμπροσθεν ἀνέβη ἐπὶ συκομορέαν ἵνα ἴδῃ αὐτόν ὅτι ἐκείνης ἤμελλεν διέρχεσθαι

5When Jesus came to the place, He looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, hurry and come down because today I must stay at your house."

5Καὶ ὡς ἦλθεν ἐπὶ τὸν τόπον ἀναβλέψας ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτόν Ζακχαῖε σπεύσας κατάβηθι σήμερον γὰρ ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ σου δεῖ με μεῖναι

6So he quickly came down and welcomed Him joyfully.

6Καὶ σπεύσας κατέβη καὶ ὑπεδέξατο αὐτὸν χαίρων

7All who saw it began to complain, "He's gone to lodge with a sinful man!"

7καὶ ἰδόντες πάντες διεγόγγυζον λέγοντες ὅτι Παρὰ ἁμαρτωλῷ ἀνδρὶ εἰσῆλθεν καταλῦσαι

8But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, "Look, I'll give half of my possessions to the poor, Lord! And if I have extorted anything from anyone, I'll pay back four times as much!"

8Σταθεὶς δὲ Ζακχαῖος εἶπεν πρὸς τὸν Κύριον Ἰδοὺ τὰ ἡμίσιά* μου τῶν ὑπαρχόντων Κύριε τοῖς πτωχοῖς δίδωμι καὶ εἴ τινός τι ἐσυκοφάντησα ἀποδίδωμι τετραπλοῦν

9"Today salvation has come to this house," Jesus told him, "because he too is a son of Abraham.

9Εἶπεν δὲ πρὸς αὐτὸν ὁ Ἰησοῦς ὅτι Σήμερον σωτηρία τῷ οἴκῳ τούτῳ ἐγένετο καθότι καὶ αὐτὸς υἱὸς Ἀβραάμ ἐστιν

10For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save the lost."

10ἦλθεν γὰρ ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ζητῆσαι καὶ σῶσαι τὸ ἀπολωλός

11As they were listening to this, He went on to tell a parable because He was near Jerusalem, and they thought the kingdom of God was going to appear right away.

11Ἀκουόντων δὲ αὐτῶν ταῦτα προσθεὶς εἶπεν παραβολὴν διὰ τὸ ἐγγὺς εἶναι Ἰερουσαλὴμ αὐτὸν καὶ δοκεῖν αὐτοὺς ὅτι παραχρῆμα μέλλει ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀναφαίνεσθαι

12Therefore He said: "A nobleman traveled to a far country to receive for himself authority to be king and then return.

12εἶπεν οὖν Ἄνθρωπός τις εὐγενὴς ἐπορεύθη εἰς χώραν μακρὰν λαβεῖν ἑαυτῷ βασιλείαν καὶ ὑποστρέψαι

13He called 10 of his slaves, gave them 10 minas, and told them, Engage in business until I come back.'

13καλέσας δὲ δέκα δούλους ἑαυτοῦ ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς δέκα μνᾶς καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Πραγματεύσασθε ἐν ᾧ ἔρχομαι

14"But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, We don't want this man to rule over us!'

14Οἱ δὲ πολῖται αὐτοῦ ἐμίσουν αὐτόν καὶ ἀπέστειλαν πρεσβείαν ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ λέγοντες Οὐ θέλομεν τοῦτον βασιλεῦσαι ἐφ’ ἡμᾶς

15"At his return, having received the authority to be king, he summoned those slaves he had given the money to, so he could find out how much they had made in business.

15Καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ ἐπανελθεῖν αὐτὸν λαβόντα τὴν βασιλείαν καὶ εἶπεν φωνηθῆναι αὐτῷ τοὺς δούλους τούτους οἷς δεδώκει τὸ ἀργύριον ἵνα γνοῖ 〈τίς〉 τί διεπραγματεύσαντο

16The first came forward and said, Master, your mina has earned 10 more minas.'

16Παρεγένετο δὲ ὁ πρῶτος λέγων Κύριε ἡ μνᾶ σου δέκα προσηργάσατο μνᾶς

17"Well done, good slave!' he told him. Because you have been faithful in a very small matter, have authority over 10 towns.'

17Καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Εὖγε ἀγαθὲ δοῦλε ὅτι ἐν ἐλαχίστῳ πιστὸς ἐγένου ἴσθι ἐξουσίαν ἔχων ἐπάνω δέκα πόλεων

18"The second came and said, Master, your mina has made five minas.'

18Καὶ ἦλθεν ὁ δεύτερος λέγων Ἡ μνᾶ σου κύριε ἐποίησεν πέντε μνᾶς

19"So he said to him, You will be over five towns.'

19Εἶπεν δὲ καὶ τούτῳ Καὶ σὺ ἐπάνω γίνου πέντε πόλεων

20"And another came and said, Master, here is your mina. I have kept it hidden away in a cloth

20Καὶ ὁ ἕτερος ἦλθεν λέγων Κύριε ἰδοὺ ἡ μνᾶ σου ἣν εἶχον ἀποκειμένην ἐν σουδαρίῳ

21because I was afraid of you, for you're a tough man: you collect what you didn't deposit and reap what you didn't sow.'

21ἐφοβούμην γάρ σε ὅτι ἄνθρωπος αὐστηρὸς εἶ αἴρεις ὃ οὐκ ἔθηκας καὶ θερίζεις ὃ οὐκ ἔσπειρας

22"He told him, I will judge you by what you have said, you evil slave! If you knew I was a tough man, collecting what I didn't deposit and reaping what I didn't sow,

22Λέγει αὐτῷ Ἐκ τοῦ στόματός σου κρίνω σε πονηρὲ δοῦλε ᾔδεις ὅτι ἐγὼ ἄνθρωπος αὐστηρός εἰμι αἴρων ὃ οὐκ ἔθηκα καὶ θερίζων ὃ οὐκ ἔσπειρα

23why didn't you put my money in the bank? And when I returned, I would have collected it with interest!'

23καὶ διὰ τί οὐκ ἔδωκάς μου τὸ ἀργύριον ἐπὶ τράπεζαν κἀγὼ ἐλθὼν σὺν τόκῳ ἂν αὐτὸ ἔπραξα

24So he said to those standing there, Take the mina away from him and give it to the one who has 10 minas.'

24Καὶ τοῖς παρεστῶσιν εἶπεν Ἄρατε ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ τὴν μνᾶν καὶ δότε τῷ τὰς δέκα μνᾶς ἔχοντι

25"But they said to him, Master, he has 10 minas.'

25Καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Κύριε ἔχει δέκα μνᾶς

26"I tell you, that to everyone who has, more will be given; and from the one who does not have, even what he does have will be taken away.

26Λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι παντὶ τῷ ἔχοντι δοθήσεται ἀπὸ δὲ τοῦ μὴ ἔχοντος καὶ ὃ ἔχει ἀρθήσεται

27But bring here these enemies of mine, who did not want me to rule over them, and slaughter them in my presence.'"

27πλὴν τοὺς ἐχθρούς μου τούτους τοὺς μὴ θελήσαντάς με βασιλεῦσαι ἐπ’ αὐτοὺς ἀγάγετε ὧδε καὶ κατασφάξατε αὐτοὺς ἔμπροσθέν μου

28When He had said these things, He went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.

28Καὶ εἰπὼν ταῦτα ἐπορεύετο ἔμπροσθεν ἀναβαίνων εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα

29As He approached Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, He sent two of the disciples

29Καὶ ἐγένετο ὡς ἤγγισεν εἰς Βηθφαγὴ καὶ Βηθανίαν πρὸς τὸ ὄρος τὸ καλούμενον Ἐλαιῶν ἀπέστειλεν δύο τῶν μαθητῶν

30and said, "Go into the village ahead of you. As you enter it, you will find a young donkey tied there, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it here.

30λέγων Ὑπάγετε εἰς τὴν κατέναντι κώμην ἐν ᾗ εἰσπορευόμενοι εὑρήσετε πῶλον δεδεμένον ἐφ’ ὃν οὐδεὶς πώποτε ἀνθρώπων ἐκάθισεν καὶ λύσαντες αὐτὸν ἀγάγετε

31If anyone asks you, Why are you untying it?' say this: The Lord needs it.'"

31καὶ ἐάν τις ὑμᾶς ἐρωτᾷ Διὰ τί λύετε οὕτως ἐρεῖτε Ὅτι Ὁ Κύριος αὐτοῦ χρείαν ἔχει

32So those who were sent left and found it just as He had told them.

32Ἀπελθόντες δὲ οἱ ἀπεσταλμένοι εὗρον καθὼς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς

33As they were untying the young donkey, its owners said to them, "Why are you untying the donkey?""

33λυόντων δὲ αὐτῶν τὸν πῶλον εἶπαν οἱ κύριοι αὐτοῦ πρὸς αὐτούς Τί λύετε τὸν πῶλον

34The Lord needs it," they said.

34Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν ὅτι Ὁ Κύριος αὐτοῦ χρείαν ἔχει

35Then they brought it to Jesus, and after throwing their robes on the donkey, they helped Jesus get on it.

35Καὶ ἤγαγον αὐτὸν πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ ἐπιρίψαντες αὐτῶν τὰ ἱμάτια ἐπὶ τὸν πῶλον ἐπεβίβασαν τὸν Ἰησοῦν

36As He was going along, they were spreading their robes on the road.

36Πορευομένου δὲ αὐτοῦ ὑπεστρώννυον τὰ ἱμάτια ἑαυτῶν ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ

37Now He came near the path down the Mount of Olives, and the whole crowd of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles they had seen:

37ἐγγίζοντος δὲ αὐτοῦ ἤδη πρὸς τῇ καταβάσει τοῦ ὄρους τῶν Ἐλαιῶν ἤρξαντο ἅπαν τὸ πλῆθος τῶν μαθητῶν χαίροντες αἰνεῖν τὸν Θεὸν φωνῇ μεγάλῃ περὶ πασῶν ὧν εἶδον δυνάμεων

38The King who comes in the name of the Lord is the blessed One. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest heaven!

38λέγοντες Εὐλογημένος ὁ ἐρχόμενος ὁ Βασιλεὺς ἐν ὀνόματι Κυρίου Ἐν οὐρανῷ εἰρήνη καὶ δόξα ἐν ὑψίστοις

39Some of the Pharisees from the crowd told Him, "Teacher, rebuke Your disciples."

39Καί τινες τῶν Φαρισαίων ἀπὸ τοῦ ὄχλου εἶπαν πρὸς αὐτόν Διδάσκαλε ἐπιτίμησον τοῖς μαθηταῖς σου

40He answered, "I tell you, if they were to keep silent, the stones would cry out!"

40Καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν Λέγω ὑμῖν ‹ὅτι› ἐὰν οὗτοι σιωπήσουσιν οἱ λίθοι κράξουσιν

41As He approached and saw the city, He wept over it,

41Καὶ ὡς ἤγγισεν ἰδὼν τὴν πόλιν ἔκλαυσεν ἐπ’ αὐτήν

42saying, "If you knew this day what would bring peace--but now it is hidden from your eyes.

42λέγων ὅτι Εἰ ἔγνως ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ταύτῃ καὶ σὺ τὰ πρὸς εἰρήνην νῦν δὲ ἐκρύβη ἀπὸ ὀφθαλμῶν σου

43For the days will come on you when your enemies will build an embankment against you, surround you, and hem you in on every side.

43ὅτι ἥξουσιν ἡμέραι ἐπὶ σὲ καὶ παρεμβαλοῦσιν οἱ ἐχθροί σου χάρακά σοι καὶ περικυκλώσουσίν σε καὶ συνέξουσίν σε πάντοθεν

44They will crush you and your children within you to the ground, and they will not leave one stone on another in you, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation."

44καὶ ἐδαφιοῦσίν σε καὶ τὰ τέκνα σου ἐν σοί καὶ οὐκ ἀφήσουσιν λίθον ἐπὶ λίθον ἐν σοί ἀνθ’ ὧν οὐκ ἔγνως τὸν καιρὸν τῆς ἐπισκοπῆς σου

45He went into the temple complex and began to throw out those who were selling,

45Καὶ εἰσελθὼν εἰς τὸ ἱερὸν ἤρξατο ἐκβάλλειν τοὺς πωλοῦντας

46and He said, "It is written, My house will be a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves!"

46λέγων αὐτοῖς Γέγραπται Καὶ ἔσται ὁ οἶκός μου οἶκος προσευχῆς ὑμεῖς δὲ αὐτὸν ἐποιήσατε Σπήλαιον λῃστῶν

47Every day He was teaching in the temple complex. The chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people were looking for a way to destroy Him,

47Καὶ ἦν διδάσκων τὸ καθ’ ἡμέραν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ οἱ δὲ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς ἐζήτουν αὐτὸν ἀπολέσαι καὶ οἱ πρῶτοι τοῦ λαοῦ

48but they could not find a way to do it, because all the people were captivated by what they heard.

48καὶ οὐχ εὕρισκον τὸ τί ποιήσωσιν ὁ λαὸς γὰρ ἅπας ἐξεκρέματο* αὐτοῦ ἀκούων
