He entered Jericho and was passing through. 1And Jesus entered and passed through Jericho.
There was a man named Zacchaeus who was a chief tax collector, and he was rich. 2And, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich.
He was trying to see who Jesus was, but he was not able because of the crowd, since he was a short man.3And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature.
So running ahead, he climbed up a sycamore tree to see Jesus, since He was about to pass that way.4And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way.
When Jesus came to the place, He looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, hurry and come down because today I must stay at your house." 5And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house.
So he quickly came down and welcomed Him joyfully. 6And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully.
All who saw it began to complain, "He's gone to lodge with a sinful man!" 7And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner.
But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, "Look, I'll give half of my possessions to the poor, Lord! And if I have extorted anything from anyone, I'll pay back four times as much!" 8And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold.
"Today salvation has come to this house," Jesus told him, "because he too is a son of Abraham. 9And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham.
For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save the lost." 10For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.
As they were listening to this, He went on to tell a parable because He was near Jerusalem, and they thought the kingdom of God was going to appear right away. 11And as they heard these things, he added and spake a parable, because he was nigh to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear.
Therefore He said: "A nobleman traveled to a far country to receive for himself authority to be king and then return. 12He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return.
He called 10 of his slaves, gave them 10 minas, and told them, Engage in business until I come back.' 13And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come.
"But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, We don't want this man to rule over us!' 14But his citizens hated him, and sent a message after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us.
"At his return, having received the authority to be king, he summoned those slaves he had given the money to, so he could find out how much they had made in business. 15And it came to pass, that when he was returned, having received the kingdom, then he commanded these servants to be called unto him, to whom he had given the money, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading.
The first came forward and said, Master, your mina has earned 10 more minas.' 16Then came the first, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained ten pounds.
"Well done, good slave!' he told him. Because you have been faithful in a very small matter, have authority over 10 towns.' 17And he said unto him, Well, thou good servant: because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities.
"The second came and said, Master, your mina has made five minas.' 18And the second came, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained five pounds.
"So he said to him, You will be over five towns.' 19And he said likewise to him, Be thou also over five cities.
"And another came and said, Master, here is your mina. I have kept it hidden away in a cloth20And another came, saying, Lord, behold, here is thy pound, which I have kept laid up in a napkin:
because I was afraid of you, for you're a tough man: you collect what you didn't deposit and reap what you didn't sow.' 21For I feared thee, because thou art an austere man: thou takest up that thou layedst not down, and reapest that thou didst not sow.
"He told him, I will judge you by what you have said, you evil slave! If you knew I was a tough man, collecting what I didn't deposit and reaping what I didn't sow, 22And he saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow:
why didn't you put my money in the bank? And when I returned, I would have collected it with interest!'23Wherefore then gavest not thou my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have required mine own with usury?
So he said to those standing there, Take the mina away from him and give it to the one who has 10 minas.' 24And he said unto them that stood by, Take from him the pound, and give it to him that hath ten pounds.
"But they said to him, Master, he has 10 minas.' 25(And they said unto him, Lord, he hath ten pounds.)
"I tell you, that to everyone who has, more will be given; and from the one who does not have, even what he does have will be taken away. 26For I say unto you, That unto every one which hath shall be given; and from him that hath not, even that he hath shall be taken away from him.
But bring here these enemies of mine, who did not want me to rule over them, and slaughter them in my presence.'" 27But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.
When He had said these things, He went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.28And when he had thus spoken, he went before, ascending up to Jerusalem.
As He approached Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, He sent two of the disciples29And it came to pass, when he was come nigh to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount called the mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples,
and said, "Go into the village ahead of you. As you enter it, you will find a young donkey tied there, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it here.30Saying, Go ye into the village over against you; in the which at your entering ye shall find a colt tied, whereon yet never man sat: loose him, and bring him hither.
If anyone asks you, Why are you untying it?' say this: The Lord needs it.'" 31And if any man ask you, Why do ye loose him? thus shall ye say unto him, Because the Lord hath need of him.
So those who were sent left and found it just as He had told them.32And they that were sent went their way, and found even as he had said unto them.
As they were untying the young donkey, its owners said to them, "Why are you untying the donkey?"" 33And as they were loosing the colt, the owners thereof said unto them, Why loose ye the colt?
The Lord needs it," they said. 34And they said, The Lord hath need of him.
Then they brought it to Jesus, and after throwing their robes on the donkey, they helped Jesus get on it.35And they brought him to Jesus: and they cast their garments upon the colt, and they set Jesus thereon.
As He was going along, they were spreading their robes on the road.36And as he went, they spread their clothes in the way.
Now He came near the path down the Mount of Olives, and the whole crowd of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles they had seen: 37And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen;
The King who comes in the name of the Lord is the blessed One. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest heaven! 38Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.
Some of the Pharisees from the crowd told Him, "Teacher, rebuke Your disciples." 39And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples.
He answered, "I tell you, if they were to keep silent, the stones would cry out!" 40And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.
As He approached and saw the city, He wept over it, 41And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it,
saying, "If you knew this day what would bring peace--but now it is hidden from your eyes. 42Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.
For the days will come on you when your enemies will build an embankment against you, surround you, and hem you in on every side. 43For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side,
They will crush you and your children within you to the ground, and they will not leave one stone on another in you, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation." 44And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.
He went into the temple complex and began to throw out those who were selling,45And he went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold therein, and them that bought;
and He said, "It is written, My house will be a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves!" 46Saying unto them, It is written, My house is the house of prayer: but ye have made it a den of thieves.
Every day He was teaching in the temple complex. The chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people were looking for a way to destroy Him, 47And he taught daily in the temple. But the chief priests and the scribes and the chief of the people sought to destroy him,
but they could not find a way to do it, because all the people were captivated by what they heard. 48And could not find what they might do: for all the people were very attentive to hear him.
