As soon as it was morning, the chief priests had a meeting with the elders, scribes, and the whole Sanhedrin. After tying Jesus up, they led Him away and handed Him over to Pilate. 1As soon as it was morning, the high priests convened a meeting with the elders and scribes and the whole Council. They bound Jesus with chains, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate.
So Pilate asked Him, "Are You the King of the Jews?" He answered him, "You have said it." 2Pilate asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" Jesus answered him, "You say so."
And the chief priests began to accuse Him of many things.3The high priests kept accusing him of many things.
Then Pilate questioned Him again, "Are You not answering anything? Look how many things they are accusing You of!"4So Pilate asked him again, "Don't you have any answer? Look how many accusations they're bringing against you!"
But Jesus still did not answer anything, so Pilate was amazed. 5But since Jesus no longer answered, Pilate was astonished.
At the festival it was Pilate's custom to release for the people a prisoner they requested. 6At every festival, Pilate would release any one prisoner whom the people requested.
There was one named Barabbas, who was in prison with rebels who had committed murder during the rebellion.7Now there was a man in prison named Barabbas. He had been with the insurgents who had committed murder during the rebellion.
The crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do for them as was his custom.8So the crowd came and began to request that Pilate do for them what he always did.
So Pilate answered them, "Do you want me to release the King of the Jews for you?"9Pilate answered them, "Do you want me to release the king of the Jews for you?"
For he knew it was because of envy that the chief priests had handed Him over. 10because he knew that the high priests had handed him over due to jealousy.
But the chief priests stirred up the crowd so that he would release Barabbas to them instead. 11But the high priests stirred up the crowd to get him to release Barabbas for them instead.
Pilate asked them again, "Then what do you want me to do with the One you call the King of the Jews?" 12So Pilate asked them again, "Then what should I do with the man you call 'the King of the Jews'?"
Again they shouted, "Crucify Him!" 13"Crucify him!" they shouted back.
Then Pilate said to them, "Why? What has He done wrong?" But they shouted, "Crucify Him!" all the more. 14"Why?" Pilate asked them. "What has he done wrong?" But they shouted even louder, "Crucify him!"
Then, willing to gratify the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. And after having Jesus flogged, he handed Him over to be crucified. 15So Pilate, wanting to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas for them, but he had Jesus whipped and handed over to be crucified.
Then the soldiers led Him away into the courtyard (that is, headquarters) and called the whole company together. 16The soldiers led Jesus into the courtyard of the palace (that is, the governor's headquarters) and called out the whole guard.
They dressed Him in a purple robe, twisted together a crown of thorns, and put it on Him. 17They dressed him in a purple robe, twisted some thorns into a victor's crown, and placed it on his head.
And they began to salute Him, "Hail, King of the Jews!"18They began to greet him, "Long live the king of the Jews!"
They kept hitting Him on the head with a reed and spitting on Him. Getting down on their knees, they were paying Him homage. 19They kept hitting him on the head with a stick, spitting on him, kneeling in front of him, and worshiping him.
When they had mocked Him, they stripped Him of the purple robe, put His clothes on Him, and led Him out to crucify Him. 20When they had finished making fun of him, they stripped him of the purple robe, put his own clothes back on him, and led him away to crucify him.
They forced a man coming in from the country, who was passing by, to carry Jesus' cross. He was Simon, a Cyrenian, the father of Alexander and Rufus.21They forced a certain passer-by named Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus, who happened to be coming in from the country, to carry Jesus' cross.
And they brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means Skull Place).22They took Jesus to a place called Golgotha, which means Skull Place.
They tried to give Him wine mixed with myrrh, but He did not take it.23They tried to give him wine mixed with myrrh, but he wouldn't accept it.
Then they crucified Him and divided His clothes, casting lots for them to decide what each would get. 24Then they crucified him. They divided his clothes among themselves by throwing dice to see what each one would get.
Now it was nine in the morning when they crucified Him. 25It was nine in the morning when they crucified him.
The inscription of the charge written against Him was: THE KING OF THE JEWS. 26The written notice of the charge against him read, "The king of the Jews."
They crucified two criminals with Him, one on His right and one on His left. 27They crucified two bandits with him, one on his right and the other on his left.
So the Scripture was fulfilled that says: And He was counted among outlaws.28
Those who passed by were yelling insults at Him, shaking their heads, and saying, "Ha! The One who would demolish the sanctuary and build it in three days,29Those who passed by kept insulting him, shaking their heads, and saying, "Ha! You who were going to destroy the sanctuary and rebuild it in three days—
save Yourself by coming down from the cross!"30save yourself and come down from the cross!"
In the same way, the chief priests with the scribes were mocking Him to one another and saying, "He saved others; He cannot save Himself! 31In the same way, the high priests, along with the scribes, were also making fun of him among themselves. They kept saying, "He saved others, but can't save himself!
Let the Messiah, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe." Even those who were crucified with Him were taunting Him. 32Let the Messiah, the king of Israel, come down from the cross now, since seeing is believing!" Even the men who were crucified with him kept insulting him.
When it was noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.33At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.
And at three Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?" which is translated, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?" 34At three o'clock, Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eloi, eloi, lema sabachthani?" (which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?")
When some of those standing there heard this, they said, "Look, He's calling for Elijah!"35When some of the people standing there heard this, they said, "Listen! He's calling for Elijah!"
Someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, fixed it on a reed, offered Him a drink, and said, "Let's see if Elijah comes to take Him down!" 36So someone ran and soaked a sponge in some sour wine. Then he put it on a stick and offered Jesus a drink, saying, "Wait! Let's see if Elijah comes to take him down!"
But Jesus let out a loud cry and breathed His last. 37Then Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last.
Then the curtain of the sanctuary was split in two from top to bottom. 38The curtain in the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom.
When the centurion, who was standing opposite Him, saw the way He breathed His last, he said, "This man really was God's Son!" 39When the centurion who stood facing Jesus saw how he had cried out and breathed his last, he said, "This man certainly was the Son of God!"
There were also women looking on from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. 40Now there were women watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of young James and Joseph, and Salome.
When He was in Galilee, they would follow Him and help Him. Many other women had come up with Him to Jerusalem. 41They used to accompany him and care for him while he was in Galilee. Many other women who had come up to Jerusalem with him were there, too.
When it was already evening, because it was preparation day (that is, the day before the Sabbath),42It was the Day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath. Since it was already evening,
Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Sanhedrin who was himself looking forward to the kingdom of God, came and boldly went in to Pilate and asked for Jesus' body.43Joseph of Arimathea, a highly respected member of the Council, who was waiting for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
Pilate was surprised that He was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him whether He had already died. 44Pilate was amazed to hear that Jesus had already died, so he summoned the centurion to ask him if he was in fact dead.
When he found out from the centurion, he gave the corpse to Joseph. 45When he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he let Joseph have the corpse.
After he bought some fine linen, he took Him down and wrapped Him in the linen. Then he placed Him in a tomb cut out of the rock, and rolled a stone against the entrance to the tomb. 46Joseph bought some linen cloth, took the body down, wrapped it in the cloth, laid it in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock, and rolled a stone against the door of the tomb.
Now Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were watching where He was placed. 47Now Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph observed where the body had been laid.
