As soon as it was morning, the chief priests had a meeting with the elders, scribes, and the whole Sanhedrin. After tying Jesus up, they led Him away and handed Him over to Pilate. 1Early in the morning, after forming a plan, the chief priests with the elders and the experts in the law and the whole Sanhedrin tied Jesus up, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate.
So Pilate asked Him, "Are You the King of the Jews?" He answered him, "You have said it." 2So Pilate asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" He replied, "You say so."
And the chief priests began to accuse Him of many things.3Then the chief priests began to accuse him repeatedly.
Then Pilate questioned Him again, "Are You not answering anything? Look how many things they are accusing You of!"4So Pilate asked him again, "Have you nothing to say? See how many charges they are bringing against you!"
But Jesus still did not answer anything, so Pilate was amazed. 5But Jesus made no further reply, so that Pilate was amazed.
At the festival it was Pilate's custom to release for the people a prisoner they requested. 6During the feast it was customary to release one prisoner to the people, whomever they requested.
There was one named Barabbas, who was in prison with rebels who had committed murder during the rebellion.7A man named Barabbas was imprisoned with rebels who had committed murder during an insurrection.
The crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do for them as was his custom.8Then the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to release a prisoner for them, as was his custom.
So Pilate answered them, "Do you want me to release the King of the Jews for you?"9So Pilate asked them, "Do you want me to release the king of the Jews for you?"
For he knew it was because of envy that the chief priests had handed Him over. 10(For he knew that the chief priests had handed him over because of envy.)
But the chief priests stirred up the crowd so that he would release Barabbas to them instead. 11But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas instead.
Pilate asked them again, "Then what do you want me to do with the One you call the King of the Jews?" 12So Pilate spoke to them again, "Then what do you want me to do with the one you call king of the Jews?"
Again they shouted, "Crucify Him!" 13They shouted back, "Crucify him!"
Then Pilate said to them, "Why? What has He done wrong?" But they shouted, "Crucify Him!" all the more. 14Pilate asked them, "Why? What has he done wrong?" But they shouted more insistently, "Crucify him!"
Then, willing to gratify the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. And after having Jesus flogged, he handed Him over to be crucified. 15Because he wanted to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas for them. Then, after he had Jesus flogged, he handed him over to be crucified.
Then the soldiers led Him away into the courtyard (that is, headquarters) and called the whole company together. 16So the soldiers led him into the palace (that is, the governor's residence) and called together the whole cohort.
They dressed Him in a purple robe, twisted together a crown of thorns, and put it on Him. 17They put a purple cloak on him and after braiding a crown of thorns, they put it on him.
And they began to salute Him, "Hail, King of the Jews!"18They began to salute him: "Hail, king of the Jews!"
They kept hitting Him on the head with a reed and spitting on Him. Getting down on their knees, they were paying Him homage. 19Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Then they knelt down and paid homage to him.
When they had mocked Him, they stripped Him of the purple robe, put His clothes on Him, and led Him out to crucify Him. 20When they had finished mocking him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes back on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.
They forced a man coming in from the country, who was passing by, to carry Jesus' cross. He was Simon, a Cyrenian, the father of Alexander and Rufus.21The soldiers forced a passerby to carry his cross, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country (he was the father of Alexander and Rufus).
And they brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means Skull Place).22They brought Jesus to a place called Golgotha (which is translated, "Place of the Skull").
They tried to give Him wine mixed with myrrh, but He did not take it.23They offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it.
Then they crucified Him and divided His clothes, casting lots for them to decide what each would get. 24Then they crucified him and divided his clothes, throwing dice for them, to decide what each would take.
Now it was nine in the morning when they crucified Him. 25It was nine o'clock in the morning when they crucified him.
The inscription of the charge written against Him was: THE KING OF THE JEWS. 26The inscription of the charge against him read, "The king of the Jews."
They crucified two criminals with Him, one on His right and one on His left. 27And they crucified two outlaws with him, one on his right and one on his left.
So the Scripture was fulfilled that says: And He was counted among outlaws.28
Those who passed by were yelling insults at Him, shaking their heads, and saying, "Ha! The One who would demolish the sanctuary and build it in three days,29Those who passed by defamed him, shaking their heads and saying, "Aha! You who can destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,
save Yourself by coming down from the cross!"30save yourself and come down from the cross!"
In the same way, the chief priests with the scribes were mocking Him to one another and saying, "He saved others; He cannot save Himself! 31In the same way even the chief priests--together with the experts in the law--were mocking him among themselves: "He saved others, but he cannot save himself!
Let the Messiah, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe." Even those who were crucified with Him were taunting Him. 32Let the Christ, the king of Israel, come down from the cross now, that we may see and believe!" Those who were crucified with him also spoke abusively to him.
When it was noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.33Now when it was noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.
And at three Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?" which is translated, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?" 34Around three o'clock Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?" which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
When some of those standing there heard this, they said, "Look, He's calling for Elijah!"35When some of the bystanders heard it they said, "Listen, he is calling for Elijah!"
Someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, fixed it on a reed, offered Him a drink, and said, "Let's see if Elijah comes to take Him down!" 36Then someone ran, filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a stick, and gave it to him to drink, saying, "Leave him alone! Let's see if Elijah will come to take him down!"
But Jesus let out a loud cry and breathed His last. 37But Jesus cried out with a loud voice and breathed his last.
Then the curtain of the sanctuary was split in two from top to bottom. 38And the temple curtain was torn in two, from top to bottom.
When the centurion, who was standing opposite Him, saw the way He breathed His last, he said, "This man really was God's Son!" 39Now when the centurion, who stood in front of him, saw how he died, he said, "Truly this man was God's Son!"
There were also women looking on from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. 40There were also women, watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome.
When He was in Galilee, they would follow Him and help Him. Many other women had come up with Him to Jerusalem. 41When he was in Galilee, they had followed him and given him support. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were there too.
When it was already evening, because it was preparation day (that is, the day before the Sabbath),42Now when evening had already come, since it was the day of preparation (that is, the day before the Sabbath),
Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Sanhedrin who was himself looking forward to the kingdom of God, came and boldly went in to Pilate and asked for Jesus' body.43Joseph of Arimathea, a highly regarded member of the council, who was himself looking forward to the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
Pilate was surprised that He was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him whether He had already died. 44Pilate was surprised that he was already dead. He called the centurion and asked him if he had been dead for some time.
When he found out from the centurion, he gave the corpse to Joseph. 45When Pilate was informed by the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.
After he bought some fine linen, he took Him down and wrapped Him in the linen. Then he placed Him in a tomb cut out of the rock, and rolled a stone against the entrance to the tomb. 46After Joseph bought a linen cloth and took down the body, he wrapped it in the linen and placed it in a tomb cut out of the rock. Then he rolled a stone across the entrance of the tomb.
Now Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were watching where He was placed. 47Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where the body was placed.
