Now, the descendants of Reuben and descendants of Gad happened to be joint owners of a very large herd of cattle. When they observed that Jazer and Gilead were good grazing lands for cattle, 1Now the Reubenites and the Gadites possessed a very large number of cattle. When they saw that the lands of Jazer and Gilead were ideal for cattle,
the descendants of Gad and descendants of Reuben approached Moses, Eleazar the priest, and the leaders of the community and said, 2the Gadites and the Reubenites came and addressed Moses, Eleazar the priest, and the leaders of the community. They said,
"Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and Beon—3"Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and Beon,
the land that the LORD defeated in the sight of the community of Israel—is perfect for cattle and your servants have cattle. 4the land that the LORD subdued before the community of Israel, is ideal for cattle, and your servants have cattle."
If we've found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants as our possession instead of us crossing the Jordan River." 5So they said, "If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants for our inheritance. Do not have us cross the Jordan River."
"Will your relatives have to go to war while you remain here?" Moses asked the descendants of Gad and descendants of Reuben in response. 6Moses said to the Gadites and the Reubenites, "Must your brothers go to war while you remain here?
"Why would you discourage the Israelis from crossing over to the land that the LORD has given them? 7Why do you frustrate the intent of the Israelites to cross over into the land which the LORD has given them?
That's what your ancestors did when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to explore the land. 8Your fathers did the same thing when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to see the land.
When they arrived in the Eshcol Valley and saw the land, they discouraged the Israelis from entering the land that the LORD had given them. 9When they went up to the Eshcol Valley and saw the land, they frustrated the intent of the Israelites so that they did not enter the land that the LORD had given them.
That's why the LORD's anger flared up that day and he promised by an oath that 10So the anger of the LORD was kindled that day, and he swore,
Not one of the men who went up from Egypt, from 20 years old and above, will see the land that I promised to give to their ancestors, that is, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, because none of them followed me wholeheartedly,11Because they have not followed me wholeheartedly, not one of the men twenty years old and upward who came from Egypt will see the land that I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,
except Jephunneh's son Caleb, the Kenizzite, and Nun's son Joshua. They've wholeheartedly followed the LORD.'12except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, and Joshua son of Nun, for they followed the LORD wholeheartedly.'
"The LORD's anger had flared up against Israel so that he made them wander in the wilderness for 40 years until that whole generation, who committed evil in the eyes of the LORD, had died. 13So the LORD's anger was kindled against the Israelites, and he made them wander in the wilderness for forty years, until all that generation that had done wickedly before the LORD was finished.
And now, look! You're acting just like your ancestors, like a brood of sinful men, who are provoking the fierce anger of the LORD against the Israelis one step at a time. 14Now look, you are standing in your fathers' place, a brood of sinners, to increase still further the fierce wrath of the LORD against the Israelites.
If you stop following him, he will once again abandon them in the wilderness. You'll end up destroying this entire people."15For if you turn away from following him, he will once again abandon them in the wilderness, and you will be the reason for their destruction."
Then they approached him and said, "Here's where we're going to build corrals for our cattle and cities for our families,16Then they came very close to him and said, "We will build sheep folds here for our flocks and cities for our families,
but we will keep ourselves armed and stay ready to go with the Israelis until we've brought them to their own places. Our families intend to live in fortified cities in the presence of the inhabitants of the land, 17but we will maintain ourselves in armed readiness and go before the Israelites until whenever we have brought them to their place. Our descendants will be living in fortified towns as a protection against the inhabitants of the land.
but we won't return to our homes until every Israeli has taken possession of each of their inheritances, 18We will not return to our homes until every Israelite has his inheritance.
since our inheritance will not be with them across the Jordan River and beyond. Instead, our inheritance is on this side of the Jordan River, facing eastward."19For we will not accept any inheritance on the other side of the Jordan River and beyond, because our inheritance has come to us on this eastern side of the Jordan."
"If you do this," Moses replied to them, "that is, if you equip yourselves for war in the LORD's presence 20Then Moses replied, "If you will do this thing, and if you will arm yourselves for battle before the LORD,
and every one of your armed soldiers crosses over the Jordan River in the presence of the LORD until he has dispossessed his enemies ahead of him 21and if all your armed men cross the Jordan before the LORD until he drives out his enemies from his presence
and subjugated the land before him, then afterwards when you return, you'll be able to stand blameless before the LORD and before Israel. This land will then be your possession before the LORD. 22and the land is subdued before the LORD, then afterward you may return and be free of your obligation to the LORD and to Israel. This land will then be your possession in the LORD's sight.
"But if you won't do so, look out! You will be sinning against the LORD. Be certain of this, that your sin will catch up to you! 23"But if you do not do this, then look, you will have sinned against the LORD. And know that your sin will find you out.
So after you've built cities for your families and corrals for your cattle, be sure to keep your promises."24So build cities for your descendants and pens for your sheep, but do what you have said you would do."
Then the descendants of Gad and descendants of Reuben spoke up. "Your servants will do exactly what our master has commanded." They said. 25So the Gadites and the Reubenites replied to Moses, "Your servants will do as my lord commands.
"Our children, wives, flocks, and all our cattle will be settled in the cities of Gilead, 26Our children, our wives, our flocks, and all our livestock will be there in the cities of Gilead,
but every soldier that we've equipped for battle will cross the Jordan River in the presence of the LORD, as our master has spoken."27but your servants will cross over, every man armed for war, to do battle in the LORD's presence, just as my lord says."
So Moses instructed Eleazar the priest and Nun's son Joshua, and the officers of the ancestral tribes of the Israelis, 28So Moses gave orders about them to Eleazar the priest, to Joshua son of Nun, and to the heads of the families of the Israelite tribes.
telling them, "If the descendants of Gad and descendants of Reuben cross over the Jordan River with you, that is, all of their soldiers who've been equipped for battle in the LORD's presence, so that the land is subjugated right before your eyes, then you are to give them the land of Gilead as their possession. 29Moses said to them: "If the Gadites and the Reubenites cross the Jordan with you, each one equipped for battle in the LORD's presence, and you conquer the land, then you must allot them the territory of Gilead as their possession.
But if the armed men don't cross over with you, then they won't have any possession in the land of Canaan."30But if they do not cross over with you armed, they must receive possessions among you in Canaan."
"We'll do just what the LORD told your servants," the descendants of Gad and the descendants of Reuben responded. 31Then the Gadites and the Reubenites answered, "Your servants will do what the LORD has spoken.
"We are to cross over in battle array in the LORD's presence into the land of Canaan, and afterwards the possession of our inheritance will be on this side of the Jordan River."32We will cross armed in the LORD's presence into the land of Canaan, and then the possession of our inheritance that we inherit will be ours on this side of the Jordan River."
So Moses gave to the descendants of Gad, to the descendants of Reuben, and to the half-tribe of Joseph's son Manasseh the kingdom of Sihon, the king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og, the king of Bashan, the whole land with its cities, and even the territories surrounding it.33So Moses gave to the Gadites, the Reubenites, and to half the tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph the realm of King Sihon of the Amorites, and the realm of King Og of Bashan, the entire land with its cities and the territory surrounding them.
The descendants of Gad rebuilt Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer, 34The Gadites rebuilt Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer,
Atrothshophan, Jazer, Jogbehah, 35Atroth Shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah,
Beth-nimrah, and Beth-haran as fortified cities with corrals for sheep. 36Beth Nimrah, and Beth Haran as fortified cities, and constructed pens for their flocks.
The descendants of Reuben rebuilt Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim, 37The Reubenites rebuilt Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim,
Nebo, Baal-meon (after having changed their names), and Sibmah. The cities that they rebuilt were renamed. 38Nebo, Baal Meon (with a change of name), and Sibmah. They renamed the cities they built.
The descendants of Manasseh's son Machir attacked Gilead and then captured and dispossessed the Amorites who were there. 39The descendants of Machir son of Manasseh went to Gilead, took it, and dispossessed the Amorites who were in it.
That's why Moses gave Gilead to Manasseh's son Machir, who lived there at the time. 40So Moses gave Gilead to Machir, son of Manasseh, and he lived there.
Manasseh's son Jair captured their towns and renamed them Havvoth-jair. 41Now Jair son of Manasseh went and captured their small towns and named them Havvoth Jair.
Nobah captured Kenath and its towns and renamed it Nobah after himself.42Then Nobah went and captured Kenath and its villages and called it Nobah after his own name.
