Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him.1Τότε οὖν ἔλαβεν Πιλᾶτος τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ ἐμαστίγωσεν
And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe,2καὶ οἱ στρατιῶται πλέξαντες στέφανον ἐξ ἀκανθῶν ἐπέθηκαν αὐτοῦ τῇ κεφαλῇ καὶ ἱμάτιον πορφυροῦν περιέβαλον αὐτόν
And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands.3καὶ ἤρχοντο πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ ἔλεγον Χαῖρε Βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων καὶ ἐδίδοσαν αὐτῷ ῥαπίσματα
Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him.4Καὶ ἐξῆλθεν πάλιν ἔξω Πιλᾶτος καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς Ἴδε ἄγω ὑμῖν αὐτὸν ἔξω ἵνα γνῶτε ὅτι οὐδεμίαν αἰτίαν εὑρίσκω ἐν αὐτῷ
Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man!5ἐξῆλθεν οὖν Ἰησοῦς ἔξω φορῶν τὸν ἀκάνθινον στέφανον καὶ τὸ πορφυροῦν ἱμάτιον καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς Ἰδοὺ ἄνθρωπος
When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him.6Ὅτε οὖν εἶδον αὐτὸν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ ὑπηρέται ἐκραύγασαν λέγοντες Σταύρωσον σταύρωσον Λέγει αὐτοῖς Πιλᾶτος Λάβετε αὐτὸν ὑμεῖς καὶ σταυρώσατε ἐγὼ γὰρ οὐχ εὑρίσκω ἐν αὐτῷ αἰτίαν
The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.7Ἀπεκρίθησαν αὐτῷ οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι Ἡμεῖς νόμον ἔχομεν καὶ κατὰ τὸν νόμον ὀφείλει ἀποθανεῖν ὅτι Υἱὸν Θεοῦ ἑαυτὸν ἐποίησεν
When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid;8Ὅτε οὖν ἤκουσεν Πιλᾶτος τοῦτον τὸν λόγον μᾶλλον ἐφοβήθη
And went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer.9καὶ εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὸ πραιτώριον πάλιν καὶ λέγει τῷ Ἰησοῦ Πόθεν εἶ σύ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἀπόκρισιν οὐκ ἔδωκεν αὐτῷ
Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee?10Λέγει οὖν αὐτῷ Πιλᾶτος Ἐμοὶ οὐ λαλεῖς οὐκ οἶδας ὅτι ἐξουσίαν ἔχω ἀπολῦσαί σε καὶ ἐξουσίαν ἔχω σταυρῶσαί σε
Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.11Ἀπεκρίθη ‹αὐτῷ› Ἰησοῦς Οὐκ εἶχες ἐξουσίαν κατ’ ἐμοῦ οὐδεμίαν εἰ μὴ ἦν δεδομένον σοι ἄνωθεν διὰ τοῦτο παραδούς μέ σοι μείζονα ἁμαρτίαν ἔχει
And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar's friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar.12Ἐκ τούτου Πιλᾶτος ἐζήτει ἀπολῦσαι αὐτόν οἱ δὲ Ἰουδαῖοι ἐκραύγασαν λέγοντες Ἐὰν τοῦτον ἀπολύσῃς οὐκ εἶ φίλος τοῦ Καίσαρος πᾶς βασιλέα ἑαυτὸν ποιῶν ἀντιλέγει τῷ Καίσαρι
When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.13 οὖν Πιλᾶτος ἀκούσας τῶν λόγων τούτων ἤγαγεν ἔξω τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ ἐκάθισεν ἐπὶ βήματος εἰς τόπον λεγόμενον Λιθόστρωτον Ἑβραϊστὶ δὲ Γαββαθα
And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!14ἦν δὲ Παρασκευὴ τοῦ πάσχα ὥρα ἦν ὡς ἕκτη καὶ λέγει τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις Ἴδε Βασιλεὺς ὑμῶν
But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.15Ἐκραύγασαν οὖν Ἐκεῖνοι Ἆρον ἆρον σταύρωσον αὐτόν Λέγει αὐτοῖς Πιλᾶτος Τὸν Βασιλέα ὑμῶν σταυρώσω Ἀπεκρίθησαν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς Οὐκ ἔχομεν βασιλέα εἰ μὴ Καίσαρα
Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.16Τότε οὖν παρέδωκεν αὐτὸν αὐτοῖς ἵνα σταυρωθῇ Παρέλαβον οὖν τὸν Ἰησοῦν
And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:17Καὶ βαστάζων ἑαυτῷ τὸν σταυρὸν ἐξῆλθεν εἰς τὸν λεγόμενον Κρανίου τόπον λέγεται Ἑβραϊστὶ Γολγοθᾶ
Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.18ὅπου αὐτὸν ἐσταύρωσαν καὶ μετ’ αὐτοῦ ἄλλους δύο ἐντεῦθεν καὶ ἐντεῦθεν μέσον δὲ τὸν Ἰησοῦν
And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.19Ἔγραψεν δὲ καὶ τίτλον Πιλᾶτος καὶ ἔθηκεν ἐπὶ τοῦ σταυροῦ ἦν δὲ γεγραμμένον ΙΗΣΟΥΣ Ο* ΝΑΖΩΡΑΙΟΣ Ο* ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥΣ ΤΩΝ ΙΟΥΔΑΙΩΝ
This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin.20Τοῦτον οὖν τὸν τίτλον πολλοὶ ἀνέγνωσαν τῶν Ἰουδαίων ὅτι ἐγγὺς ἦν τόπος τῆς πόλεως ὅπου ἐσταυρώθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ ἦν γεγραμμένον Ἑβραϊστί Ῥωμαϊστί Ἑλληνιστί
Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.21ἔλεγον οὖν τῷ Πιλάτῳ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς τῶν Ἰουδαίων Μὴ γράφε Βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων ἀλλ’ ὅτι ἐκεῖνος εἶπεν Βασιλεύς εἰμι «τῶν Ἰουδαίων»
Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.22Ἀπεκρίθη Πιλᾶτος γέγραφα γέγραφα
Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.23Οἱ οὖν στρατιῶται ὅτε ἐσταύρωσαν τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἔλαβον τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐποίησαν τέσσαρα μέρη ἑκάστῳ στρατιώτῃ μέρος καὶ τὸν χιτῶνα ἦν δὲ χιτὼν ἄραφος ἐκ τῶν ἄνωθεν ὑφαντὸς δι’ ὅλου
They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.24εἶπαν οὖν πρὸς ἀλλήλους Μὴ σχίσωμεν αὐτόν ἀλλὰ λάχωμεν περὶ αὐτοῦ τίνος ἔσται ἵνα γραφὴ πληρωθῇ ‹ἡ λέγουσα› Διεμερίσαντο τὰ ἱμάτιά μου ἑαυτοῖς καὶ ἐπὶ τὸν ἱματισμόν μου ἔβαλον κλῆρον Οἱ μὲν οὖν στρατιῶται ταῦτα ἐποίησαν
Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.25Εἱστήκεισαν δὲ παρὰ τῷ σταυρῷ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ μήτηρ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀδελφὴ τῆς μητρὸς αὐτοῦ Μαρία τοῦ Κλωπᾶ καὶ Μαρία Μαγδαληνή
When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!26Ἰησοῦς οὖν ἰδὼν τὴν μητέρα καὶ τὸν μαθητὴν παρεστῶτα ὃν ἠγάπα λέγει τῇ μητρί Γύναι ἴδε υἱός σου
Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.27εἶτα λέγει τῷ μαθητῇ Ἴδε μήτηρ σου καὶ ἀπ’ ἐκείνης τῆς ὥρας ἔλαβεν μαθητὴς αὐτὴν εἰς τὰ ἴδια
After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.28Μετὰ τοῦτο εἰδὼς Ἰησοῦς ὅτι ἤδη πάντα τετέλεσται ἵνα τελειωθῇ γραφὴ λέγει Διψῶ
Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.29σκεῦος ἔκειτο ὄξους μεστόν σπόγγον οὖν μεστὸν τοῦ ὄξους ὑσσώπῳ περιθέντες προσήνεγκαν αὐτοῦ τῷ στόματι
When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.30ὅτε οὖν ἔλαβεν τὸ ὄξος Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν Τετέλεσται καὶ κλίνας τὴν κεφαλὴν παρέδωκεν τὸ πνεῦμα
The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.31Οἱ οὖν Ἰουδαῖοι ἐπεὶ Παρασκευὴ ἦν ἵνα μὴ μείνῃ ἐπὶ τοῦ σταυροῦ τὰ σώματα ἐν τῷ σαββάτῳ ἦν γὰρ μεγάλη ἡμέρα ἐκείνου τοῦ σαββάτου ἠρώτησαν τὸν Πιλᾶτον ἵνα κατεαγῶσιν αὐτῶν τὰ σκέλη καὶ ἀρθῶσιν
Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him.32ἦλθον οὖν οἱ στρατιῶται καὶ τοῦ μὲν πρώτου κατέαξαν τὰ σκέλη καὶ τοῦ ἄλλου τοῦ συσταυρωθέντος αὐτῷ
But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:33ἐπὶ δὲ τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἐλθόντες ὡς εἶδον ἤδη αὐτὸν τεθνηκότα οὐ κατέαξαν αὐτοῦ τὰ σκέλη
But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.34ἀλλ’ εἷς τῶν στρατιωτῶν λόγχῃ αὐτοῦ τὴν πλευρὰν ἔνυξεν καὶ ἐξῆλθεν εὐθὺς αἷμα καὶ ὕδωρ
And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.35καὶ ἑωρακὼς μεμαρτύρηκεν καὶ ἀληθινὴ αὐτοῦ ἐστιν μαρτυρία καὶ ἐκεῖνος οἶδεν ὅτι ἀληθῆ λέγει ἵνα καὶ ὑμεῖς πιστεύητε
For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.36Ἐγένετο γὰρ ταῦτα ἵνα γραφὴ πληρωθῇ Ὀστοῦν οὐ συντριβήσεται αὐτοῦ
And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.37καὶ πάλιν ἑτέρα γραφὴ λέγει Ὄψονται εἰς ὃν ἐξεκέντησαν
And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus.38Μετὰ δὲ ταῦτα ἠρώτησεν τὸν Πιλᾶτον Ἰωσὴφ [ὁ] ἀπὸ Ἁριμαθαίας ὢν μαθητὴς τοῦ Ἰησοῦ κεκρυμμένος δὲ διὰ τὸν φόβον τῶν Ἰουδαίων ἵνα ἄρῃ τὸ σῶμα τοῦ Ἰησοῦ καὶ ἐπέτρεψεν Πιλᾶτος ἦλθεν οὖν καὶ ἦρεν τὸ σῶμα αὐτοῦ
And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.39ἦλθεν δὲ καὶ Νικόδημος ἐλθὼν πρὸς αὐτὸν νυκτὸς τὸ πρῶτον φέρων μίγμα σμύρνης καὶ ἀλόης ὡς λίτρας ἑκατόν
Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.40ἔλαβον οὖν τὸ σῶμα τοῦ Ἰησοῦ καὶ ἔδησαν αὐτὸ ὀθονίοις μετὰ τῶν ἀρωμάτων καθὼς ἔθος ἐστὶν τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις ἐνταφιάζειν
Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid.41Ἦν δὲ ἐν τῷ τόπῳ ὅπου ἐσταυρώθη κῆπος καὶ ἐν τῷ κήπῳ μνημεῖον καινόν ἐν οὐδέπω οὐδεὶς ἦν τεθειμένος
There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews' preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.42ἐκεῖ οὖν διὰ τὴν Παρασκευὴν τῶν Ἰουδαίων ὅτι ἐγγὺς ἦν τὸ μνημεῖον ἔθηκαν τὸν Ἰησοῦν
