Hebrews 10

New International VersionHolman Christian Standard Bible
The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming--not the realities themselves. For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship.1Since the law has only a shadow of the good things to come, and not the actual form of those realities, it can never perfect the worshipers by the same sacrifices they continually offer year after year.
Otherwise, would they not have stopped being offered? For the worshipers would have been cleansed once for all, and would no longer have felt guilty for their sins.2Otherwise, wouldn't they have stopped being offered, since the worshipers, once purified, would no longer have any consciousness of sins?
But those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins.3But in the sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year.
It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.4For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
Therefore, when Christ came into the world, he said: "Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you prepared for me;5Therefore, as He was coming into the world, He said: You did not want sacrifice and offering, but You prepared a body for Me.
with burnt offerings and sin offerings you were not pleased.6You did not delight in whole burnt offerings and sin offerings.
Then I said, 'Here I am--it is written about me in the scroll-- I have come to do your will, my God.'"7Then I said, "See-- it is written about Me in the volume of the scroll-- I have come to do Your will, God!"
First he said, "Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them"--though they were offered in accordance with the law.8After He says above, You did not want or delight in sacrifices and offerings, whole burnt offerings and sin offerings (which are offered according to the law),
Then he said, "Here I am, I have come to do your will." He sets aside the first to establish the second.9He then says, See, I have come to do Your will. He takes away the first to establish the second.
And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.10By this will of God, we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once and for all.
Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.11Every priest stands day after day ministering and offering the same sacrifices time after time, which can never take away sins.
But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God,12But this man, after offering one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God.
and since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool.13He is now waiting until His enemies are made His footstool.
For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.14For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are sanctified.
The Holy Spirit also testifies to us about this. First he says:15The Holy Spirit also testifies to us about this. For after He says:
"This is the covenant I will make with them after that time, says the Lord. I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds."16This is the covenant I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws on their hearts and write them on their minds,
Then he adds: "Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more."17He adds: I will never again remember their sins and their lawless acts.
And where these have been forgiven, sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary.18Now where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer an offering for sin.
Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus,19Therefore, brothers, since we have boldness to enter the sanctuary through the blood of Jesus,
by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body,20by a new and living way He has opened for us through the curtain (that is, His flesh),
and since we have a great priest over the house of God,21and since we have a great high priest over the house of God,
let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.22let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed in pure water.
Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.23Let us hold on to the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.
And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds,24And let us be concerned about one another in order to promote love and good works,
not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another--and all the more as you see the Day approaching.25not staying away from our worship meetings, as some habitually do, but encouraging each other, and all the more as you see the day drawing near.
If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left,26For if we deliberately sin after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,
but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God.27but a terrifying expectation of judgment and the fury of a fire about to consume the adversaries.
Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.28If anyone disregards Moses' law, he dies without mercy, based on the testimony of two or three witnesses.
How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace?29How much worse punishment do you think one will deserve who has trampled on the Son of God, regarded as profane the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and insulted the Spirit of grace?
For we know him who said, "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," and again, "The Lord will judge his people."30For we know the One who has said, Vengeance belongs to Me, I will repay, and again, The Lord will judge His people.
It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.31It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God!
Remember those earlier days after you had received the light, when you endured in a great conflict full of suffering.32Remember the earlier days when, after you had been enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings.
Sometimes you were publicly exposed to insult and persecution; at other times you stood side by side with those who were so treated.33Sometimes you were publicly exposed to taunts and afflictions, and at other times you were companions of those who were treated that way.
You suffered along with those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions.34For you sympathized with the prisoners and accepted with joy the confiscation of your possessions, knowing that you yourselves have a better and enduring possession.
So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded.35So don't throw away your confidence, which has a great reward.
You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.36For you need endurance, so that after you have done God's will, you may receive what was promised.
For, "In just a little while, he who is coming will come and will not delay."37For yet in a very little while, the Coming One will come and not delay.
And, "But my righteous one will live by faith. And I take no pleasure in the one who shrinks back."38But My righteous one will live by faith; and if he draws back, I have no pleasure in him.
But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved.39But we are not those who draw back and are destroyed, but those who have faith and obtain life.
