The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God,1Ἀρχὴ τοῦ εὐαγγελίου Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ Υἱοῦ Θεοῦ
as it is written in Isaiah the prophet: "I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way" --2Καθὼς γέγραπται ἐν τῷ Ἠσαΐᾳ τῷ προφήτῃ Ἰδοὺ ἀποστέλλω τὸν ἄγγελόν μου πρὸ προσώπου σου ὃς κατασκευάσει τὴν ὁδόν σου
"a voice of one calling in the wilderness, 'Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.'"3Φωνὴ βοῶντος ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ Ἑτοιμάσατε τὴν ὁδὸν Κυρίου εὐθείας ποιεῖτε τὰς τρίβους αὐτοῦ
And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.4Ἐγένετο Ἰωάννης βαπτίζων ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ [καὶ] κηρύσσων βάπτισμα μετανοίας εἰς ἄφεσιν ἁμαρτιῶν
The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.5καὶ ἐξεπορεύετο πρὸς αὐτὸν πᾶσα Ἰουδαία χώρα καὶ οἱ Ἱεροσολυμῖται πάντες καὶ ἐβαπτίζοντο ὑπ’ αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ Ἰορδάνῃ ποταμῷ ἐξομολογούμενοι τὰς ἁμαρτίας αὐτῶν
John wore clothing made of camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.6Καὶ ἦν Ἰωάννης ἐνδεδυμένος τρίχας καμήλου καὶ ζώνην δερματίνην περὶ τὴν ὀσφὺν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔσθων ἀκρίδας καὶ μέλι ἄγριον
And this was his message: "After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.7καὶ ἐκήρυσσεν λέγων Ἔρχεται ἰσχυρότερός μου ὀπίσω μου οὗ οὐκ εἰμὶ ἱκανὸς κύψας λῦσαι τὸν ἱμάντα τῶν ὑποδημάτων αὐτοῦ
I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."8ἐγὼ ἐβάπτισα ὑμᾶς ὕδατι αὐτὸς δὲ βαπτίσει ὑμᾶς ‹ἐν› Πνεύματι Ἁγίῳ
At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.9Καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν ἐκείναις ταῖς ἡμέραις ἦλθεν Ἰησοῦς ἀπὸ Ναζαρὲτ τῆς Γαλιλαίας καὶ ἐβαπτίσθη εἰς τὸν Ἰορδάνην ὑπὸ Ἰωάννου
Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.10καὶ εὐθὺς ἀναβαίνων ἐκ τοῦ ὕδατος εἶδεν σχιζομένους τοὺς οὐρανοὺς καὶ τὸ Πνεῦμα ὡς περιστερὰν καταβαῖνον εἰς αὐτόν
And a voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased."11καὶ φωνὴ ἐγένετο ἐκ τῶν οὐρανῶν Σὺ εἶ Υἱός μου ἀγαπητός ἐν σοὶ εὐδόκησα
At once the Spirit sent him out into the wilderness,12Καὶ εὐθὺς τὸ Πνεῦμα αὐτὸν ἐκβάλλει εἰς τὴν ἔρημον
and he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him.13καὶ ἦν ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ τεσσεράκοντα ἡμέρας πειραζόμενος ὑπὸ τοῦ Σατανᾶ καὶ ἦν μετὰ τῶν θηρίων καὶ οἱ ἄγγελοι διηκόνουν αὐτῷ
After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God.14Καὶ μετὰ τὸ παραδοθῆναι τὸν Ἰωάννην ἦλθεν Ἰησοῦς εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν κηρύσσων τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τοῦ Θεοῦ
"The time has come," he said. "The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!"15καὶ λέγων ὅτι Πεπλήρωται καιρὸς καὶ ἤγγικεν βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ μετανοεῖτε καὶ πιστεύετε ἐν τῷ εὐαγγελίῳ
As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen.16Καὶ παράγων παρὰ τὴν θάλασσαν τῆς Γαλιλαίας εἶδεν Σίμωνα καὶ Ἀνδρέαν τὸν ἀδελφὸν Σίμωνος ἀμφιβάλλοντας ἐν τῇ θαλάσσῃ ἦσαν γὰρ ἁλιεῖς
"Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will send you out to fish for people."17καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς Δεῦτε ὀπίσω μου καὶ ποιήσω ὑμᾶς γενέσθαι ἁλιεῖς ἀνθρώπων
At once they left their nets and followed him.18καὶ εὐθὺς ἀφέντες τὰ δίκτυα ἠκολούθησαν αὐτῷ
When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets.19Καὶ προβὰς ὀλίγον εἶδεν Ἰάκωβον τὸν τοῦ Ζεβεδαίου καὶ Ἰωάννην τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ αὐτοὺς ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ καταρτίζοντας τὰ δίκτυα
Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.20καὶ εὐθὺς ἐκάλεσεν αὐτούς καὶ ἀφέντες τὸν πατέρα αὐτῶν Ζεβεδαῖον ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ μετὰ τῶν μισθωτῶν ἀπῆλθον ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ
They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach.21Καὶ εἰσπορεύονται εἰς Καφαρναούμ καὶ εὐθὺς τοῖς σάββασιν εἰσελθὼν εἰς τὴν συναγωγὴν ἐδίδασκεν
The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law.22καὶ ἐξεπλήσσοντο ἐπὶ τῇ διδαχῇ αὐτοῦ ἦν γὰρ διδάσκων αὐτοὺς ὡς ἐξουσίαν ἔχων καὶ οὐχ ὡς οἱ γραμματεῖς
Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out,23Καὶ εὐθὺς ἦν ἐν τῇ συναγωγῇ αὐτῶν ἄνθρωπος ἐν πνεύματι ἀκαθάρτῳ καὶ ἀνέκραξεν
"What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God!"24λέγων Τί ἡμῖν καὶ σοί Ἰησοῦ Ναζαρηνέ ἦλθες ἀπολέσαι ἡμᾶς οἶδά σε τίς εἶ Ἅγιος τοῦ Θεοῦ
"Be quiet!" said Jesus sternly. "Come out of him!"25Καὶ ἐπετίμησεν αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς ‹λέγων› Φιμώθητι καὶ ἔξελθε ἐξ αὐτοῦ
The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.26καὶ σπαράξαν αὐτὸν τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ ἀκάθαρτον καὶ φωνῆσαν φωνῇ μεγάλῃ ἐξῆλθεν ἐξ αὐτοῦ
The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, "What is this? A new teaching--and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him."27Καὶ ἐθαμβήθησαν ἅπαντες ὥστε ‹συζητεῖν πρὸς ἑαυτοὺς› λέγοντας Τί ἐστιν τοῦτο διδαχὴ καινή κατ’ ἐξουσίαν καὶ τοῖς πνεύμασι τοῖς ἀκαθάρτοις ἐπιτάσσει καὶ ὑπακούουσιν αὐτῷ
News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.28καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ἀκοὴ αὐτοῦ εὐθὺς πανταχοῦ εἰς ὅλην τὴν περίχωρον τῆς Γαλιλαίας
As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew.29Καὶ εὐθὺς ἐκ τῆς συναγωγῆς ἐξελθόντες ἦλθον εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν Σίμωνος καὶ Ἀνδρέου μετὰ Ἰακώβου καὶ Ἰωάννου
Simon's mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they immediately told Jesus about her.30 δὲ πενθερὰ Σίμωνος κατέκειτο πυρέσσουσα καὶ εὐθὺς λέγουσιν αὐτῷ περὶ αὐτῆς
So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them.31καὶ προσελθὼν ἤγειρεν αὐτὴν κρατήσας τῆς χειρός καὶ ἀφῆκεν αὐτὴν πυρετός καὶ διηκόνει αὐτοῖς
That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed.32Ὀψίας δὲ γενομένης ὅτε ἔδυ* ἥλιος ἔφερον πρὸς αὐτὸν πάντας τοὺς κακῶς ἔχοντας καὶ τοὺς δαιμονιζομένους
The whole town gathered at the door,33καὶ ἦν ὅλη πόλις ἐπισυνηγμένη πρὸς τὴν θύραν
and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was.34καὶ ἐθεράπευσεν πολλοὺς κακῶς ἔχοντας ποικίλαις νόσοις καὶ δαιμόνια πολλὰ ἐξέβαλεν καὶ οὐκ ἤφιεν λαλεῖν τὰ δαιμόνια ὅτι ᾔδεισαν αὐτόν (Χριστὸν εἶναι)
Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.35Καὶ πρωῒ ἔννυχα λίαν ἀναστὰς ἐξῆλθεν καὶ ἀπῆλθεν εἰς ἔρημον τόπον κἀκεῖ προσηύχετο
Simon and his companions went to look for him,36καὶ κατεδίωξεν αὐτὸν Σίμων καὶ οἱ μετ’ αὐτοῦ
and when they found him, they exclaimed: "Everyone is looking for you!"37καὶ εὗρον αὐτὸν καὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ ὅτι Πάντες ζητοῦσίν σε
Jesus replied, "Let us go somewhere else--to the nearby villages--so I can preach there also. That is why I have come."38Καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς Ἄγωμεν ἀλλαχοῦ εἰς τὰς ἐχομένας κωμοπόλεις ἵνα καὶ ἐκεῖ κηρύξω εἰς τοῦτο γὰρ ἐξῆλθον
So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.39καὶ ἦλθεν κηρύσσων εἰς τὰς συναγωγὰς αὐτῶν εἰς ὅλην τὴν Γαλιλαίαν καὶ τὰ δαιμόνια ἐκβάλλων
A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees, "If you are willing, you can make me clean."40Καὶ ἔρχεται πρὸς αὐτὸν λεπρὸς παρακαλῶν αὐτὸν καὶ γονυπετῶν [καὶ] λέγων αὐτῷ ὅτι Ἐὰν θέλῃς δύνασαί με καθαρίσαι
Jesus was indignant. He reached out his hand and touched the man. "I am willing," he said. "Be clean!"41Καὶ σπλαγχνισθεὶς ἐκτείνας τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ ἥψατο καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ Θέλω καθαρίσθητι
Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed.42Καὶ εὐθὺς ἀπῆλθεν ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ λέπρα καὶ ἐκαθαρίσθη*
Jesus sent him away at once with a strong warning:43Καὶ ἐμβριμησάμενος αὐτῷ εὐθὺς ἐξέβαλεν αὐτόν
"See that you don't tell this to anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them."44καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ Ὅρα μηδενὶ μηδὲν εἴπῃς ἀλλὰ ὕπαγε σεαυτὸν δεῖξον τῷ ἱερεῖ καὶ προσένεγκε περὶ τοῦ καθαρισμοῦ σου προσέταξεν Μωϋσῆς εἰς μαρτύριον αὐτοῖς
Instead he went out and began to talk freely, spreading the news. As a result, Jesus could no longer enter a town openly but stayed outside in lonely places. Yet the people still came to him from everywhere.45 δὲ ἐξελθὼν ἤρξατο κηρύσσειν πολλὰ καὶ διαφημίζειν τὸν λόγον ὥστε μηκέτι αὐτὸν δύνασθαι φανερῶς εἰς πόλιν εἰσελθεῖν ἀλλ’ ἔξω ἐπ’ ἐρήμοις τόποις ἦν καὶ ἤρχοντο πρὸς αὐτὸν πάντοθεν
