Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked,1Τότε προσέρχονται τῷ Ἰησοῦ ἀπὸ Ἱεροσολύμων Φαρισαῖοι καὶ γραμματεῖς λέγοντες
"Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don't wash their hands before they eat!"2Διὰ τί οἱ μαθηταί σου παραβαίνουσιν τὴν παράδοσιν τῶν πρεσβυτέρων οὐ γὰρ νίπτονται τὰς χεῖρας ‹αὐτῶν› ὅταν ἄρτον ἐσθίωσιν
Jesus replied, "And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition?3 δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Διὰ τί καὶ ὑμεῖς παραβαίνετε τὴν ἐντολὴν τοῦ Θεοῦ διὰ τὴν παράδοσιν ὑμῶν
For God said, 'Honor your father and mother' and 'Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.'4 γὰρ Θεὸς εἶπεν Τίμα τὸν πατέρα καὶ τὴν μητέρα καί κακολογῶν πατέρα μητέρα θανάτῳ τελευτάτω
But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is 'devoted to God,'5ὑμεῖς δὲ λέγετε Ὃς ἂν εἴπῃ τῷ πατρὶ τῇ μητρί Δῶρον ἐὰν ἐξ ἐμοῦ ὠφεληθῇς
they are not to 'honor their father or mother' with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition.6οὐ μὴ τιμήσει τὸν πατέρα αὐτοῦ 〈ἢ τὴν μητέρα αὐτοῦ〉 καὶ ἠκυρώσατε τὸν λόγον τοῦ Θεοῦ διὰ τὴν παράδοσιν ὑμῶν
You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:7ὑποκριταί καλῶς ἐπροφήτευσεν περὶ ὑμῶν Ἠσαΐας λέγων
"'These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.8 λαὸς οὗτος τοῖς χείλεσίν με τιμᾷ δὲ καρδία αὐτῶν πόρρω ἀπέχει ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ
They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.'"9Μάτην δὲ σέβονταί με Διδάσκοντες διδασκαλίας ἐντάλματα ἀνθρώπων
Jesus called the crowd to him and said, "Listen and understand.10Καὶ προσκαλεσάμενος τὸν ὄχλον εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἀκούετε καὶ συνίετε
What goes into someone's mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them."11οὐ τὸ εἰσερχόμενον εἰς τὸ στόμα κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον ἀλλὰ τὸ ἐκπορευόμενον ἐκ τοῦ στόματος τοῦτο κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον
Then the disciples came to him and asked, "Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?"12Τότε προσελθόντες οἱ μαθηταὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ Οἶδας ὅτι οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ἀκούσαντες τὸν λόγον ἐσκανδαλίσθησαν
He replied, "Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by the roots.13 δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν Πᾶσα φυτεία ἣν οὐκ ἐφύτευσεν Πατήρ μου οὐράνιος ἐκριζωθήσεται
Leave them; they are blind guides. If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit."14ἄφετε αὐτούς τυφλοί εἰσιν ὁδηγοί τυφλῶν τυφλὸς δὲ τυφλὸν ἐὰν ὁδηγῇ ἀμφότεροι εἰς βόθυνον πεσοῦνται
Peter said, "Explain the parable to us."15Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ Πέτρος εἶπεν αὐτῷ Φράσον ἡμῖν τὴν παραβολήν ‹ταύτην›
"Are you still so dull?" Jesus asked them.16 δὲ εἶπεν Ἀκμὴν καὶ ὑμεῖς ἀσύνετοί ἐστε
"Don't you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body?17οὐ νοεῖτε ὅτι πᾶν τὸ εἰσπορευόμενον εἰς τὸ στόμα εἰς τὴν κοιλίαν χωρεῖ καὶ εἰς ἀφεδρῶνα ἐκβάλλεται
But the things that come out of a person's mouth come from the heart, and these defile them.18τὰ δὲ ἐκπορευόμενα ἐκ τοῦ στόματος ἐκ τῆς καρδίας ἐξέρχεται κἀκεῖνα κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον
For out of the heart come evil thoughts--murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.19ἐκ γὰρ τῆς καρδίας ἐξέρχονται διαλογισμοὶ πονηροί φόνοι μοιχεῖαι πορνεῖαι κλοπαί ψευδομαρτυρίαι βλασφημίαι
These are what defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them."20ταῦτά ἐστιν τὰ κοινοῦντα τὸν ἄνθρωπον τὸ δὲ ἀνίπτοις χερσὶν φαγεῖν οὐ κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον
Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon.21Καὶ ἐξελθὼν ἐκεῖθεν Ἰησοῦς ἀνεχώρησεν εἰς τὰ μέρη Τύρου καὶ Σιδῶνος
A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly."22καὶ ἰδοὺ γυνὴ Χαναναία ἀπὸ τῶν ὁρίων ἐκείνων ἐξελθοῦσα ἔκραζεν λέγουσα Ἐλέησόν με Κύριε υἱὸς Δαυίδ θυγάτηρ μου κακῶς δαιμονίζεται
Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, "Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us."23 δὲ οὐκ ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῇ λόγον καὶ προσελθόντες οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ἠρώτουν αὐτὸν λέγοντες Ἀπόλυσον αὐτήν ὅτι κράζει ὄπισθεν ἡμῶν
He answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel."24 δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν Οὐκ ἀπεστάλην εἰ μὴ εἰς τὰ πρόβατα τὰ ἀπολωλότα οἴκου Ἰσραήλ
The woman came and knelt before him. "Lord, help me!" she said.25 δὲ ἐλθοῦσα προσεκύνει αὐτῷ λέγουσα Κύριε βοήθει μοι
He replied, "It is not right to take the children's bread and toss it to the dogs."26 δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν Οὐκ ἔστιν καλὸν λαβεῖν τὸν ἄρτον τῶν τέκνων καὶ βαλεῖν τοῖς κυναρίοις
"Yes it is, Lord," she said. "Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master's table."27 δὲ εἶπεν Ναί κύριε καὶ γὰρ τὰ κυνάρια ἐσθίει ἀπὸ τῶν ψιχίων τῶν πιπτόντων ἀπὸ τῆς τραπέζης τῶν κυρίων αὐτῶν
Then Jesus said to her, "Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted." And her daughter was healed at that moment.28Τότε ἀποκριθεὶς Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτῇ γύναι μεγάλη σου πίστις γενηθήτω σοι ὡς θέλεις καὶ ἰάθη θυγάτηρ αὐτῆς ἀπὸ τῆς ὥρας ἐκείνης
Jesus left there and went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up on a mountainside and sat down.29Καὶ μεταβὰς ἐκεῖθεν Ἰησοῦς ἦλθεν παρὰ τὴν θάλασσαν τῆς Γαλιλαίας καὶ ἀναβὰς εἰς τὸ ὄρος ἐκάθητο ἐκεῖ
Great crowds came to him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute and many others, and laid them at his feet; and he healed them.30καὶ προσῆλθον αὐτῷ ὄχλοι πολλοὶ ἔχοντες μεθ’ ἑαυτῶν χωλούς κυλλούς τυφλούς κωφούς καὶ ἑτέρους πολλούς καὶ ἔρριψαν* αὐτοὺς παρὰ τοὺς πόδας αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐθεράπευσεν αὐτούς
The people were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled made well, the lame walking and the blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel.31ὥστε τὸν ὄχλον θαυμάσαι βλέποντας κωφοὺς λαλοῦντας κυλλοὺς ὑγιεῖς καὶ χωλοὺς περιπατοῦντας καὶ τυφλοὺς βλέποντας καὶ ἐδόξασαν τὸν Θεὸν Ἰσραήλ
Jesus called his disciples to him and said, "I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way."32 δὲ Ἰησοῦς προσκαλεσάμενος τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ εἶπεν Σπλαγχνίζομαι ἐπὶ τὸν ὄχλον ὅτι ἤδη ἡμέραι τρεῖς προσμένουσίν μοι καὶ οὐκ ἔχουσιν τί φάγωσιν καὶ ἀπολῦσαι αὐτοὺς νήστεις οὐ θέλω μή‿ ποτε ἐκλυθῶσιν ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ
His disciples answered, "Where could we get enough bread in this remote place to feed such a crowd?"33Καὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταί Πόθεν ἡμῖν ἐν ἐρημίᾳ ἄρτοι τοσοῦτοι ὥστε χορτάσαι ὄχλον τοσοῦτον
"How many loaves do you have?" Jesus asked. "Seven," they replied, "and a few small fish."34Καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς Πόσους ἄρτους ἔχετε Οἱ δὲ εἶπαν Ἑπτά καὶ ὀλίγα ἰχθύδια
He told the crowd to sit down on the ground.35Καὶ παραγγείλας τῷ ὄχλῳ ἀναπεσεῖν ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν
Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, and when he had given thanks, he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and they in turn to the people.36ἔλαβεν τοὺς ἑπτὰ ἄρτους καὶ τοὺς ἰχθύας καὶ εὐχαριστήσας ἔκλασεν καὶ ἐδίδου τοῖς μαθηταῖς οἱ δὲ μαθηταὶ τοῖς ὄχλοις
They all ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.37Καὶ ἔφαγον πάντες καὶ ἐχορτάσθησαν καὶ τὸ περισσεῦον τῶν κλασμάτων ἦραν ἑπτὰ σπυρίδας πλήρεις
The number of those who ate was four thousand men, besides women and children.38οἱ δὲ ἐσθίοντες ἦσαν τετρακισχίλιοι ἄνδρες χωρὶς γυναικῶν καὶ παιδίων
After Jesus had sent the crowd away, he got into the boat and went to the vicinity of Magadan.39Καὶ ἀπολύσας τοὺς ὄχλους ἐνέβη εἰς τὸ πλοῖον καὶ ἦλθεν εἰς τὰ ὅρια Μαγαδάν
