Jesus then left that place and went into the region of Judea and across the Jordan. Again crowds of people came to him, and as was his custom, he taught them.1Getting up, He went from there to the region of Judea and beyond the Jordan; crowds gathered around Him again, and, according to His custom, He once more began to teach them.
Some Pharisees came and tested him by asking, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?"2Some Pharisees came up to Jesus, testing Him, and began to question Him whether it was lawful for a man to divorce a wife.
"What did Moses command you?" he replied.3And He answered and said to them, "What did Moses command you?"
They said, "Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away."4They said, "Moses permitted a man TO WRITE A CERTIFICATE OF DIVORCE AND SEND her AWAY."
"It was because your hearts were hard that Moses wrote you this law," Jesus replied.5But Jesus said to them, "Because of your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment.
"But at the beginning of creation God 'made them male and female.'6"But from the beginning of creation, God MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE.
For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife,7"FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER,
and the two will become one flesh.' So they are no longer two, but one flesh.8AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH; so they are no longer two, but one flesh.
Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate."9"What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate."
When they were in the house again, the disciples asked Jesus about this.10In the house the disciples began questioning Him about this again.
He answered, "Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her.11And He said to them, "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her;
And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery."12and if she herself divorces her husband and marries another man, she is committing adultery."
People were bringing little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples rebuked them.13And they were bringing children to Him so that He might touch them; but the disciples rebuked them.
When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.14But when Jesus saw this, He was indignant and said to them, "Permit the children to come to Me; do not hinder them; for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.
Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it."15"Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it at all."
And he took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them.16And He took them in His arms and began blessing them, laying His hands on them.
As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. "Good teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?"17As He was setting out on a journey, a man ran up to Him and knelt before Him, and asked Him, "Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?"
"Why do you call me good?" Jesus answered. "No one is good--except God alone.18And Jesus said to him, "Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone.
You know the commandments: 'You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, you shall not defraud, honor your father and mother.'"19"You know the commandments, 'DO NOT MURDER, DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, DO NOT STEAL, DO NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS, Do not defraud, HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER.'"
"Teacher," he declared, "all these I have kept since I was a boy."20And he said to Him, "Teacher, I have kept all these things from my youth up."
Jesus looked at him and loved him. "One thing you lack," he said. "Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."21Looking at him, Jesus felt a love for him and said to him, "One thing you lack: go and sell all you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me."
At this the man's face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.22But at these words he was saddened, and he went away grieving, for he was one who owned much property.
Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, "How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!"23And Jesus, looking around, said to His disciples, "How hard it will be for those who are wealthy to enter the kingdom of God!"
The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again, "Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!24The disciples were amazed at His words. But Jesus answered again and said to them, "Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!
It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God."25"It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."
The disciples were even more amazed, and said to each other, "Who then can be saved?"26They were even more astonished and said to Him, "Then who can be saved?"
Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God."27Looking at them, Jesus said, "With people it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God."
Then Peter spoke up, "We have left everything to follow you!"28Peter began to say to Him, "Behold, we have left everything and followed You."
"Truly I tell you," Jesus replied, "no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel29Jesus said, "Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or farms, for My sake and for the gospel's sake,
will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age: homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields--along with persecutions--and in the age to come eternal life.30but that he will receive a hundred times as much now in the present age, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and farms, along with persecutions; and in the age to come, eternal life.
But many who are first will be last, and the last first."31"But many who are first will be last, and the last, first."
They were on their way up to Jerusalem, with Jesus leading the way, and the disciples were astonished, while those who followed were afraid. Again he took the Twelve aside and told them what was going to happen to him.32They were on the road going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking on ahead of them; and they were amazed, and those who followed were fearful. And again He took the twelve aside and began to tell them what was going to happen to Him,
"We are going up to Jerusalem," he said, "and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles,33saying, "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death and will hand Him over to the Gentiles.
who will mock him and spit on him, flog him and kill him. Three days later he will rise."34"They will mock Him and spit on Him, and scourge Him and kill Him, and three days later He will rise again."
Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. "Teacher," they said, "we want you to do for us whatever we ask."35James and John, the two sons of Zebedee, came up to Jesus, saying, "Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask of You."
"What do you want me to do for you?" he asked.36And He said to them, "What do you want Me to do for you?"
They replied, "Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory."37They said to Him, "Grant that we may sit, one on Your right and one on Your left, in Your glory."
"You don't know what you are asking," Jesus said. "Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?"38But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?"
"We can," they answered. Jesus said to them, "You will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with,39They said to Him, "We are able." And Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you shall drink; and you shall be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized.
but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared."40"But to sit on My right or on My left, this is not Mine to give; but it is for those for whom it has been prepared."
When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John.41Hearing this, the ten began to feel indignant with James and John.
Jesus called them together and said, "You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them.42Calling them to Himself, Jesus said to them, "You know that those who are recognized as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them; and their great men exercise authority over them.
Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,43"But it is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant;
and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all.44and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be slave of all.
For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."45"For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many."
Then they came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (which means "son of Timaeus"), was sitting by the roadside begging.46Then they came to Jericho. And as He was leaving Jericho with His disciples and a large crowd, a blind beggar named Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the road.
When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!"47When he heard that it was Jesus the Nazarene, he began to cry out and say, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!"
Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, "Son of David, have mercy on me!"48Many were sternly telling him to be quiet, but he kept crying out all the more, "Son of David, have mercy on me!"
Jesus stopped and said, "Call him." So they called to the blind man, "Cheer up! On your feet! He's calling you."49And Jesus stopped and said, "Call him here." So they called the blind man, saying to him, "Take courage, stand up! He is calling for you."
Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus.50Throwing aside his cloak, he jumped up and came to Jesus.
"What do you want me to do for you?" Jesus asked him. The blind man said, "Rabbi, I want to see."51And answering him, Jesus said, "What do you want Me to do for you?" And the blind man said to Him, "Rabboni, I want to regain my sight!"
"Go," said Jesus, "your faith has healed you." Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road.52And Jesus said to him, "Go; your faith has made you well." Immediately he regained his sight and began following Him on the road.
