Now on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they, and certain other women with them, came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared.1But at early dawn on the first day of the week, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared.
But they found the stone rolled away from the tomb.2They found the stone rolled away from the tomb,
Then they went in and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.3but when they went in, they didn't find the body of the Lord Jesus.
And it happened, as they were greatly perplexed about this, that behold, two men stood by them in shining garments.4While they were puzzling over this, two men in dazzling robes suddenly stood beside them.
Then, as they were afraid and bowed their faces to the earth, they said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead?5While the women remained terrified, bowing their faces to the ground, the men asked them, "Why are you looking among the dead for someone who is living?
He is not here, but is risen! Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee,6He is not here, but has been raised. Remember what he told you while he was still in Galilee:
saying, ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.’ ”7The Son of Man must be handed over to sinful men, be crucified, and rise on the third day.'"
And they remembered His words.8Then the women remembered Jesus' words.
Then they returned from the tomb and told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest.9They returned from the tomb and reported all these things to the eleven disciples and all the others.
It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them, who told these things to the apostles.10The women who told the apostles about it were Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and some others.
And their words seemed to them like idle tales, and they did not believe them.11But what they said seemed nonsense to them, so they did not believe them.
But Peter arose and ran to the tomb; and stooping down, he saw the linen cloths lying by themselves; and he departed, marveling to himself at what had happened.12Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. He stooped down and saw only the linen cloths. Then he went home, wondering about what had happened.
Now behold, two of them were traveling that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was seven miles from Jerusalem.13On the same day, two of Jesus' followers were walking to a village called Emmaus, about 60 stadia from Jerusalem.
And they talked together of all these things which had happened.14They were talking with each other about all these things that had taken place.
So it was, while they conversed and reasoned, that Jesus Himself drew near and went with them.15While they were discussing and analyzing what had happened, Jesus himself approached and began to walk with them,
But their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him.16but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him.
And He said to them, “What kind of conversation is this that you have with one another as you walk and are sad?”17He asked them, "What are you discussing with each other as you're walking along?" They stood still and looked gloomy.
Then the one whose name was Cleopas answered and said to Him, “Are You the only stranger in Jerusalem, and have You not known the things which happened there in these days?”18The one whose name was Cleopas answered him, "Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who doesn't know what happened there in the past few days?"
And He said to them, “What things?” So they said to Him, “The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a Prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people,19He asked them, "What things?" They answered him, "The events involving Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet, mighty in what he said and did before God and all the people,
and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to be condemned to death, and crucified Him.20and how our high priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and had him crucified.
But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened.21But we kept hoping that he would be the one to redeem Israel. What is more, this is now the third day since these things occurred.
Yes, and certain women of our company, who arrived at the tomb early, astonished us.22Even some of our women have startled us by what they told us. They were at the tomb early this morning
When they did not find His body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said He was alive.23and didn't find his body there, so they came back and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who were saying that he was alive.
And certain of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but Him they did not see.”24Then some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said. However, they didn't see him."
Then He said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!25Then Jesus told them, "O, how foolish you are! How slow you are to believe everything the prophets said!
Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?”26The Messiah had to suffer these things and then enter his glory, didn't he?"
And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.27Then, beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them all the passages of Scripture about himself.
Then they drew near to the village where they were going, and He indicated that He would have gone farther.28As they came near the village where the two men were headed, Jesus acted as though he were going farther.
But they constrained Him, saying, “Abide with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent.” And He went in to stay with them.29But they strongly urged him, "Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the daylight is nearly gone." So he went in to stay with them.
Now it came to pass, as He sat at the table with them, that He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them.30While he was at the table with them, he took the bread, blessed it, broke it in pieces, and gave it to them.
Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight.31Then their eyes were opened, and they knew who he was. And he vanished from them.
And they said to one another, “Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?”32Then they asked each other, "Our hearts kept burning within us as he was talking to us on the road and explaining the Scriptures to us, didn't they?"
So they rose up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together,33They got up right away, went back to Jerusalem, and found the eleven disciples and their companions all together.
saying, “The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!”34They kept saying, "The Lord has really risen and has appeared to Simon!"
And they told about the things that had happened on the road, and how He was known to them in the breaking of bread.35Then the two men began to tell what had happened on the road and how they had recognized him when he broke the bread in pieces.
Now as they said these things, Jesus Himself stood in the midst of them, and said to them, “Peace to you.”36While they were all talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and told them, "Peace be with you."
But they were terrified and frightened, and supposed they had seen a spirit.37They were startled and terrified, thinking they were seeing a ghost.
And He said to them, “Why are you troubled? And why do doubts arise in your hearts?38But Jesus told them, "What's frightening you? And why are you doubting?
Behold My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself. Handle Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see I have.”39Look at my hands and my feet, because it's really me. Touch me and look at me, because a ghost doesn't have flesh and bones as you see that I have."
When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet.40After he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.
But while they still did not believe for joy, and marveled, He said to them, “Have you any food here?”41Even though they were still skeptical due to their joy and astonishment, Jesus asked them, "Do you have anything here to eat?"
So they gave Him a piece of a broiled fish and some honeycomb.42They gave him a piece of broiled fish,
And He took it and ate in their presence.43and he took it and ate it in their presence.
Then He said to them, “These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.”44Then he told them, "These are the words that I spoke to you while I was still with you—that everything written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms had to be fulfilled."
And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures.45Then he opened their minds so that they might understand the Scriptures.
Then He said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day,46He told them, "This is how it is written: the Messiah was to suffer and rise from the dead on the third day,
and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.47and then repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
And you are witnesses of these things.48You are witnesses of these things.
Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.”49I am sending to you what my Father promised, so stay here in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high."
And He led them out as far as Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them.50Later, he led them out as far as Bethany, lifted up his hands, and blessed them.
Now it came to pass, while He blessed them, that He was parted from them and carried up into heaven.51While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up to heaven.
And they worshiped Him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy,52They worshipped him and returned to Jerusalem filled with great joy.
and were continually in the temple praising and blessing God. Amen.53They were continually in the Temple, blessing God.
