When Jesus had finished saying all this to the people, he returned to Capernaum.1When Jesus had concluded His discourse in the hearing of the people, He went to Capernaum.
At that time the highly valued slave of a Roman officer was sick and near death.2There a highly valued servant of a centurion was sick and about to die.
When the officer heard about Jesus, he sent some respected Jewish elders to ask him to come and heal his slave.3When the centurion heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to ask Him to come and heal his servant.
So they earnestly begged Jesus to help the man. “If anyone deserves your help, he does,” they said,4They came to Jesus and pleaded with Him earnestly, “This man is worthy to have You grant this,
“for he loves the Jewish people and even built a synagogue for us.”5for he loves our nation and has built our synagogue.”
So Jesus went with them. But just before they arrived at the house, the officer sent some friends to say, “Lord, don’t trouble yourself by coming to my home, for I am not worthy of such an honor.6So Jesus went with them. But when He was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends with the message: “Lord, do not trouble Yourself, for I am not worthy to have You come under my roof.
I am not even worthy to come and meet you. Just say the word from where you are, and my servant will be healed.7That is why I did not consider myself worthy to come to You. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed.
I know this because I am under the authority of my superior officers, and I have authority over my soldiers. I only need to say, ‘Go,’ and they go, or ‘Come,’ and they come. And if I say to my slaves, ‘Do this,’ they do it.”8For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell one to go, and he goes; and another to come, and he comes. I tell my servant to do something, and he does it.”
When Jesus heard this, he was amazed. Turning to the crowd that was following him, he said, “I tell you, I haven’t seen faith like this in all Israel!”9When Jesus heard this, He marveled at the centurion. Turning to the crowd following Him, He said, “I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such great faith.”
And when the officer’s friends returned to his house, they found the slave completely healed. Jesus Raises a Widow’s Son10And when the messengers returned to the house, they found the servant in good health.
Soon afterward Jesus went with his disciples to the village of Nain, and a large crowd followed him.11Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain. His disciples went with Him, accompanied by a large crowd.
A funeral procession was coming out as he approached the village gate. The young man who had died was a widow’s only son, and a large crowd from the village was with her.12As He approached the town gate, He saw a dead man being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her.
When the Lord saw her, his heart overflowed with compassion. “Don’t cry!” he said.13When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said, “Do not weep.”
Then he walked over to the coffin and touched it, and the bearers stopped. “Young man,” he said, “I tell you, get up.”14Then He went up and touched the coffin, and those carrying it stood still. “Young man,” He said, “I tell you, get up!”
Then the dead boy sat up and began to talk! And Jesus gave him back to his mother.15And the dead man sat up and began to speak! Then Jesus gave him back to his mother.
Great fear swept the crowd, and they praised God, saying, “A mighty prophet has risen among us,” and “God has visited his people today.”16A sense of awe swept over all of them, and they glorified God. “A great prophet has appeared among us!” they said. “God has visited His people!”
And the news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding countryside. Jesus and John the Baptist17And the news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and all the surrounding region.
The disciples of John the Baptist told John about everything Jesus was doing. So John called for two of his disciples,18Then John’s disciples informed him about all these things.
and he sent them to the Lord to ask him, “Are you the Messiah we’ve been expecting, or should we keep looking for someone else?”19So John called two of his disciples and sent them to ask the Lord, “Are You the One who was to come, or should we look for someone else?”
John’s two disciples found Jesus and said to him, “John the Baptist sent us to ask, ‘Are you the Messiah we’ve been expecting, or should we keep looking for someone else?’”20When the men came to Jesus, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to ask, ‘Are You the One who was to come, or should we look for someone else?’ ”
At that very time, Jesus cured many people of their diseases, illnesses, and evil spirits, and he restored sight to many who were blind.21At that very hour Jesus healed many people of their diseases, afflictions, and evil spirits, and He gave sight to many who were blind.
Then he told John’s disciples, “Go back to John and tell him what you have seen and heard—the blind see, the lame walk, those with leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life, and the Good News is being preached to the poor.”22So He replied, “Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.
And he added, “God blesses those who do not fall away because of me. ”23Blessed is the one who does not fall away on account of Me.”
After John’s disciples left, Jesus began talking about him to the crowds. “What kind of man did you go into the wilderness to see? Was he a weak reed, swayed by every breath of wind?24After John’s messengers had left, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swaying in the wind?
Or were you expecting to see a man dressed in expensive clothes? No, people who wear beautiful clothes and live in luxury are found in palaces.25Otherwise, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? Look, those who wear elegant clothing and live in luxury are found in palaces.
Were you looking for a prophet? Yes, and he is more than a prophet.26What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.
John is the man to whom the Scriptures refer when they say, ‘Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, and he will prepare your way before you.’27This is the one about whom it is written: ‘Behold, I will send My messenger ahead of You, who will prepare Your way before You.’
I tell you, of all who have ever lived, none is greater than John. Yet even the least person in the Kingdom of God is greater than he is!”28I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John, yet even the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”
When they heard this, all the people—even the tax collectors—agreed that God’s way was right, for they had been baptized by John.29All the people who heard this, even the tax collectors, acknowledged God’s justice. For they had received the baptism of John.
But the Pharisees and experts in religious law rejected God’s plan for them, for they had refused John’s baptism.30But the Pharisees and experts in the law rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.
“To what can I compare the people of this generation?” Jesus asked. “How can I describe them?31“To what, then, can I compare the men of this generation? What are they like?
They are like children playing a game in the public square. They complain to their friends, ‘We played wedding songs, and you didn’t dance, so we played funeral songs, and you didn’t weep.’32They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to one another: ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not weep.’
For John the Baptist didn’t spend his time eating bread or drinking wine, and you say, ‘He’s possessed by a demon.’33For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon!’
The Son of Man, on the other hand, feasts and drinks, and you say, ‘He’s a glutton and a drunkard, and a friend of tax collectors and other sinners!’34The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look at this glutton and drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’
But wisdom is shown to be right by the lives of those who follow it. ” Jesus Anointed by a Sinful Woman35But wisdom is vindicated by all her children.”
One of the Pharisees asked Jesus to have dinner with him, so Jesus went to his home and sat down to eat.36Then one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to eat with him, and He entered the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table.
When a certain immoral woman from that city heard he was eating there, she brought a beautiful alabaster jar filled with expensive perfume.37When a sinful woman from that town learned that Jesus was dining there, she brought an alabaster jar of perfume.
Then she knelt behind him at his feet, weeping. Her tears fell on his feet, and she wiped them off with her hair. Then she kept kissing his feet and putting perfume on them.38As she stood behind Him at His feet weeping, she began to wet His feet with her tears and wipe them with her hair. Then she kissed His feet and anointed them with the perfume.
When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know what kind of woman is touching him. She’s a sinner!”39When the Pharisee who had invited Jesus saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, He would know who this is and what kind of woman is touching Him—for she is a sinner!”
Then Jesus answered his thoughts. “Simon,” he said to the Pharisee, “I have something to say to you.” “Go ahead, Teacher,” Simon replied.40But Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.” “Tell me, Teacher,” he said.
Then Jesus told him this story: “A man loaned money to two people—500 pieces of silver to one and 50 pieces to the other.41“Two men were debtors to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.
But neither of them could repay him, so he kindly forgave them both, canceling their debts. Who do you suppose loved him more after that?”42When they were unable to repay him, he forgave both of them. Which one, then, will love him more?”
Simon answered, “I suppose the one for whom he canceled the larger debt.” “That’s right,” Jesus said.43“I suppose the one who was forgiven more,” Simon replied. “You have judged correctly,” Jesus said.
Then he turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Look at this woman kneeling here. When I entered your home, you didn’t offer me water to wash the dust from my feet, but she has washed them with her tears and wiped them with her hair.44And turning toward the woman, He said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? When I entered your house, you did not give Me water for My feet, but she wet My feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.
You didn’t greet me with a kiss, but from the time I first came in, she has not stopped kissing my feet.45You did not greet Me with a kiss, but she has not stopped kissing My feet since I arrived.
You neglected the courtesy of olive oil to anoint my head, but she has anointed my feet with rare perfume.46You did not anoint My head with oil, but she has anointed My feet with perfume.
“I tell you, her sins—and they are many—have been forgiven, so she has shown me much love. But a person who is forgiven little shows only little love.”47Therefore I tell you, because her many sins have been forgiven, she has loved much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little.”
Then Jesus said to the woman, “Your sins are forgiven.”48Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”
The men at the table said among themselves, “Who is this man, that he goes around forgiving sins?”49But those at the table began to say to themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”
And Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”50And Jesus told the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”
