“I tell you the truth, anyone who sneaks over the wall of a sheepfold, rather than going through the gate, must surely be a thief and a robber!1Ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν μὴ εἰσερχόμενος διὰ τῆς θύρας εἰς τὴν αὐλὴν τῶν προβάτων ἀλλὰ ἀναβαίνων ἀλλαχόθεν ἐκεῖνος κλέπτης ἐστὶν καὶ λῃστής
But the one who enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep.2 δὲ εἰσερχόμενος διὰ τῆς θύρας ποιμήν ἐστιν τῶν προβάτων
The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep recognize his voice and come to him. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.3τούτῳ θυρωρὸς ἀνοίγει καὶ τὰ πρόβατα τῆς φωνῆς αὐτοῦ ἀκούει καὶ τὰ ἴδια πρόβατα φωνεῖ κατ’ ὄνομα καὶ ἐξάγει αὐτά
After he has gathered his own flock, he walks ahead of them, and they follow him because they know his voice.4Ὅταν τὰ ἴδια πάντα ἐκβάλῃ ἔμπροσθεν αὐτῶν πορεύεται καὶ τὰ πρόβατα αὐτῷ ἀκολουθεῖ ὅτι οἴδασιν τὴν φωνὴν αὐτοῦ
They won’t follow a stranger; they will run from him because they don’t know his voice.”5ἀλλοτρίῳ δὲ οὐ μὴ ἀκολουθήσουσιν ἀλλὰ φεύξονται ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ ὅτι οὐκ οἴδασιν τῶν ἀλλοτρίων τὴν φωνήν
Those who heard Jesus use this illustration didn’t understand what he meant,6Ταύτην τὴν παροιμίαν εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς ἐκεῖνοι δὲ οὐκ ἔγνωσαν τίνα ἦν ἐλάλει αὐτοῖς
so he explained it to them: “I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep.7Εἶπεν οὖν πάλιν ‹αὐτοῖς› Ἰησοῦς Ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι θύρα τῶν προβάτων
All who came before me were thieves and robbers. But the true sheep did not listen to them.8πάντες ὅσοι ἦλθον πρὸ ἐμοῦ κλέπται εἰσὶν καὶ λῃσταί ἀλλ’ οὐκ ἤκουσαν αὐτῶν τὰ πρόβατα
Yes, I am the gate. Those who come in through me will be saved. They will come and go freely and will find good pastures.9ἐγώ εἰμι θύρα δι’ ἐμοῦ ἐάν τις εἰσέλθῃ σωθήσεται καὶ εἰσελεύσεται καὶ ἐξελεύσεται καὶ νομὴν εὑρήσει
The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.10 κλέπτης οὐκ ἔρχεται εἰ μὴ ἵνα κλέψῃ καὶ θύσῃ καὶ ἀπολέσῃ ἐγὼ ἦλθον ἵνα ζωὴν ἔχωσιν καὶ περισσὸν ἔχωσιν
“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd sacrifices his life for the sheep.11Ἐγώ εἰμι ποιμὴν καλός ποιμὴν καλὸς τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ τίθησιν ὑπὲρ τῶν προβάτων
A hired hand will run when he sees a wolf coming. He will abandon the sheep because they don’t belong to him and he isn’t their shepherd. And so the wolf attacks them and scatters the flock.12 μισθωτὸς καὶ οὐκ ὢν ποιμήν οὗ οὐκ ἔστιν τὰ πρόβατα ἴδια θεωρεῖ τὸν λύκον ἐρχόμενον καὶ ἀφίησιν τὰ πρόβατα καὶ φεύγει καὶ λύκος ἁρπάζει αὐτὰ καὶ σκορπίζει
The hired hand runs away because he’s working only for the money and doesn’t really care about the sheep.13ὅτι μισθωτός ἐστιν καὶ οὐ μέλει αὐτῷ περὶ τῶν προβάτων
“I am the good shepherd; I know my own sheep, and they know me,14Ἐγώ εἰμι ποιμὴν καλός καὶ γινώσκω τὰ ἐμὰ καὶ γινώσκουσί με τὰ ἐμά
just as my Father knows me and I know the Father. So I sacrifice my life for the sheep.15καθὼς γινώσκει με Πατὴρ κἀγὼ γινώσκω τὸν Πατέρα καὶ τὴν ψυχήν μου τίθημι ὑπὲρ τῶν προβάτων
I have other sheep, too, that are not in this sheepfold. I must bring them also. They will listen to my voice, and there will be one flock with one shepherd.16καὶ ἄλλα πρόβατα ἔχω οὐκ ἔστιν ἐκ τῆς αὐλῆς ταύτης κἀκεῖνα δεῖ με ἀγαγεῖν καὶ τῆς φωνῆς μου ἀκούσουσιν καὶ γενήσονται* μία ποίμνη εἷς ποιμήν
“The Father loves me because I sacrifice my life so I may take it back again.17Διὰ τοῦτό με Πατὴρ ἀγαπᾷ ὅτι ἐγὼ τίθημι τὴν ψυχήν μου ἵνα πάλιν λάβω αὐτήν
No one can take my life from me. I sacrifice it voluntarily. For I have the authority to lay it down when I want to and also to take it up again. For this is what my Father has commanded.”18οὐδεὶς αἴρει* αὐτὴν ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ ἀλλ’ ἐγὼ τίθημι αὐτὴν ἀπ’ ἐμαυτοῦ ἐξουσίαν ἔχω θεῖναι αὐτήν καὶ ἐξουσίαν ἔχω πάλιν λαβεῖν αὐτήν ταύτην τὴν ἐντολὴν ἔλαβον παρὰ τοῦ Πατρός μου
When he said these things, the people were again divided in their opinions about him.19Σχίσμα πάλιν ἐγένετο ἐν τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις διὰ τοὺς λόγους τούτους
Some said, “He’s demon possessed and out of his mind. Why listen to a man like that?”20ἔλεγον δὲ πολλοὶ ἐξ αὐτῶν Δαιμόνιον ἔχει καὶ μαίνεται τί αὐτοῦ ἀκούετε
Others said, “This doesn’t sound like a man possessed by a demon! Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?” Jesus Claims to Be the Son of God21Ἄλλοι ἔλεγον Ταῦτα τὰ ῥήματα οὐκ ἔστιν δαιμονιζομένου μὴ δαιμόνιον δύναται τυφλῶν ὀφθαλμοὺς ἀνοῖξαι
It was now winter, and Jesus was in Jerusalem at the time of Hanukkah, the Festival of Dedication.22Ἐγένετο τότε τὰ ἐνκαίνια ἐν τοῖς Ἱεροσολύμοις χειμὼν ἦν
He was in the Temple, walking through the section known as Solomon’s Colonnade.23καὶ περιεπάτει Ἰησοῦς ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ ἐν τῇ στοᾷ τοῦ Σολομῶνος
The people surrounded him and asked, “How long are you going to keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.”24ἐκύκλωσαν οὖν αὐτὸν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι καὶ ἔλεγον αὐτῷ Ἕως πότε τὴν ψυχὴν ἡμῶν αἴρεις εἰ σὺ εἶ Χριστός εἰπὲ* ἡμῖν παρρησίᾳ
Jesus replied, “I have already told you, and you don’t believe me. The proof is the work I do in my Father’s name.25Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς Εἶπον ὑμῖν καὶ οὐ πιστεύετε τὰ ἔργα ἐγὼ ποιῶ ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι τοῦ Πατρός μου ταῦτα μαρτυρεῖ περὶ ἐμοῦ
But you don’t believe me because you are not my sheep.26ἀλλὰ ὑμεῖς οὐ πιστεύετε ὅτι οὐκ ἐστὲ ἐκ τῶν προβάτων τῶν ἐμῶν
My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.27τὰ πρόβατα τὰ ἐμὰ τῆς φωνῆς μου ἀκούουσιν κἀγὼ γινώσκω αὐτά καὶ ἀκολουθοῦσίν μοι
I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them away from me,28κἀγὼ δίδωμι αὐτοῖς ζωὴν αἰώνιον καὶ οὐ μὴ ἀπόλωνται εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα καὶ οὐχ ἁρπάσει τις αὐτὰ ἐκ τῆς χειρός μου
for my Father has given them to me, and he is more powerful than anyone else. No one can snatch them from the Father’s hand.29 Πατήρ μου δέδωκέν μοι πάντων μεῖζόν ἐστιν καὶ οὐδεὶς δύναται ἁρπάζειν ἐκ τῆς χειρὸς τοῦ Πατρός
The Father and I are one.”30ἐγὼ καὶ Πατὴρ ἕν ἐσμεν
Once again the people picked up stones to kill him.31Ἐβάστασαν ‹οὖν› πάλιν λίθους οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι ἵνα λιθάσωσιν αὐτόν
Jesus said, “At my Father’s direction I have done many good works. For which one are you going to stone me?”32ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς Πολλὰ ἔργα «ἔδειξα ὑμῖν» καλὰ ἐκ τοῦ Πατρός διὰ ποῖον αὐτῶν ἔργον ἐμὲ λιθάζετε
They replied, “We’re stoning you not for any good work, but for blasphemy! You, a mere man, claim to be God.”33Ἀπεκρίθησαν αὐτῷ οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι Περὶ καλοῦ ἔργου οὐ λιθάζομέν σε ἀλλὰ περὶ βλασφημίας καὶ ὅτι σὺ ἄνθρωπος ὢν ποιεῖς σεαυτὸν Θεόν
Jesus replied, “It is written in your own Scriptures that God said to certain leaders of the people, ‘I say, you are gods!’34Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς Οὐκ ἔστιν γεγραμμένον ἐν τῷ νόμῳ ὑμῶν ὅτι Ἐγὼ εἶπα Θεοί ἐστε
And you know that the Scriptures cannot be altered. So if those people who received God’s message were called ‘gods,’35εἰ ἐκείνους εἶπεν θεοὺς πρὸς οὓς λόγος τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐγένετο καὶ οὐ δύναται λυθῆναι γραφή
why do you call it blasphemy when I say, ‘I am the Son of God’? After all, the Father set me apart and sent me into the world.36ὃν Πατὴρ ἡγίασεν καὶ ἀπέστειλεν εἰς τὸν κόσμον ὑμεῖς λέγετε ὅτι Βλασφημεῖς ὅτι εἶπον Υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ εἰμι
Don’t believe me unless I carry out my Father’s work.37Εἰ οὐ ποιῶ τὰ ἔργα τοῦ Πατρός μου μὴ πιστεύετέ μοι
But if I do his work, believe in the evidence of the miraculous works I have done, even if you don’t believe me. Then you will know and understand that the Father is in me, and I am in the Father.”38εἰ δὲ ποιῶ κἂν ἐμοὶ μὴ πιστεύητε τοῖς ἔργοις πιστεύετε ἵνα γνῶτε καὶ γινώσκητε ὅτι ἐν ἐμοὶ Πατὴρ κἀγὼ ἐν τῷ Πατρί
Once again they tried to arrest him, but he got away and left them.39Ἐζήτουν οὖν αὐτὸν πάλιν πιάσαι καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ἐκ τῆς χειρὸς αὐτῶν
He went beyond the Jordan River near the place where John was first baptizing and stayed there awhile.40Καὶ ἀπῆλθεν πάλιν πέραν τοῦ Ἰορδάνου εἰς τὸν τόπον ὅπου ἦν Ἰωάννης τὸ πρῶτον βαπτίζων καὶ ἔμεινεν* ἐκεῖ
And many followed him. “John didn’t perform miraculous signs,” they remarked to one another, “but everything he said about this man has come true.”41καὶ πολλοὶ ἦλθον πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ ἔλεγον ὅτι Ἰωάννης μὲν σημεῖον ἐποίησεν οὐδέν πάντα δὲ ὅσα εἶπεν Ἰωάννης περὶ τούτου ἀληθῆ ἦν
And many who were there believed in Jesus.42καὶ πολλοὶ ἐπίστευσαν εἰς αὐτὸν ἐκεῖ
