The tribes of Reuben and Gad owned vast numbers of livestock. So when they saw that the lands of Jazer and Gilead were ideally suited for their flocks and herds,1Now the children of Reuben and the children of Gad had a very great multitude of cattle: and when they saw the land of Jazer, and the land of Gilead, that, behold, the place was a place for cattle;
they came to Moses, Eleazar the priest, and the other leaders of the community. They said,2The children of Gad and the children of Reuben came and spake unto Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and unto the princes of the congregation, saying,
“Notice the towns of Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sibmah, Nebo, and Beon.3Ataroth, and Dibon, and Jazer, and Nimrah, and Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Shebam, and Nebo, and Beon,
The LORD has conquered this whole area for the community of Israel, and it is ideally suited for all our livestock.4Even the country which the LORD smote before the congregation of Israel, is a land for cattle, and thy servants have cattle:
If we have found favor with you, please let us have this land as our property instead of giving us land across the Jordan River.”5Wherefore, said they, if we have found grace in thy sight, let this land be given unto thy servants for a possession, and bring us not over Jordan.
“Do you intend to stay here while your brothers go across and do all the fighting?” Moses asked the men of Gad and Reuben.6And Moses said unto the children of Gad and to the children of Reuben, Shall your brethren go to war, and shall ye sit here?
“Why do you want to discourage the rest of the people of Israel from going across to the land the LORD has given them?7And wherefore discourage ye the heart of the children of Israel from going over into the land which the LORD hath given them?
Your ancestors did the same thing when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to explore the land.8Thus did your fathers, when I sent them from Kadeshbarnea to see the land.
After they went up to the valley of Eshcol and explored the land, they discouraged the people of Israel from entering the land the LORD was giving them.9For when they went up unto the valley of Eshcol, and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the children of Israel, that they should not go into the land which the LORD had given them.
Then the LORD was very angry with them, and he vowed,10And the LORD'S anger was kindled the same time, and he sware, saying,
‘Of all those I rescued from Egypt, no one who is twenty years old or older will ever see the land I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, for they have not obeyed me wholeheartedly.11Surely none of the men that came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I sware unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob; because they have not wholly followed me:
The only exceptions are Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, for they have wholeheartedly followed the LORD.’12Save Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite, and Joshua the son of Nun: for they have wholly followed the LORD.
“The LORD was angry with Israel and made them wander in the wilderness for forty years until the entire generation that sinned in the LORD’s sight had died.13And the LORD'S anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation, that had done evil in the sight of the LORD, was consumed.
But here you are, a brood of sinners, doing exactly the same thing! You are making the LORD even angrier with Israel.14And, behold, ye are risen up in your fathers' stead, an increase of sinful men, to augment yet the fierce anger of the LORD toward Israel.
If you turn away from him like this and he abandons them again in the wilderness, you will be responsible for destroying this entire nation!”15For if ye turn away from after him, he will yet again leave them in the wilderness; and ye shall destroy all this people.
But they approached Moses and said, “We simply want to build pens for our livestock and fortified towns for our wives and children.16And they came near unto him, and said, We will build sheepfolds here for our cattle, and cities for our little ones:
Then we will arm ourselves and lead our fellow Israelites into battle until we have brought them safely to their land. Meanwhile, our families will stay in the fortified towns we build here, so they will be safe from any attacks by the local people.17But we ourselves will go ready armed before the children of Israel, until we have brought them unto their place: and our little ones shall dwell in the fenced cities because of the inhabitants of the land.
We will not return to our homes until all the people of Israel have received their portions of land.18We will not return unto our houses, until the children of Israel have inherited every man his inheritance.
But we do not claim any of the land on the other side of the Jordan. We would rather live here on the east side and accept this as our grant of land.”19For we will not inherit with them on yonder side Jordan, or forward; because our inheritance is fallen to us on this side Jordan eastward.
Then Moses said, “If you keep your word and arm yourselves for the LORD’s battles,20And Moses said unto them, If ye will do this thing, if ye will go armed before the LORD to war,
and if your troops cross the Jordan and keep fighting until the LORD has driven out his enemies,21And will go all of you armed over Jordan before the LORD, until he hath driven out his enemies from before him,
then you may return when the LORD has conquered the land. You will have fulfilled your duty to the LORD and to the rest of the people of Israel. And the land on the east side of the Jordan will be your property from the LORD.22And the land be subdued before the LORD: then afterward ye shall return, and be guiltless before the LORD, and before Israel; and this land shall be your possession before the LORD.
But if you fail to keep your word, then you will have sinned against the LORD, and you may be sure that your sin will find you out.23But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the LORD: and be sure your sin will find you out.
Go ahead and build towns for your families and pens for your flocks, but do everything you have promised.”24Build you cities for your little ones, and folds for your sheep; and do that which hath proceeded out of your mouth.
Then the men of Gad and Reuben replied, “We, your servants, will follow your instructions exactly.25And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben spake unto Moses, saying, Thy servants will do as my lord commandeth.
Our children, wives, flocks, and cattle will stay here in the towns of Gilead.26Our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and all our cattle, shall be there in the cities of Gilead:
But all who are able to bear arms will cross over to fight for the LORD, just as you have said.”27But thy servants will pass over, every man armed for war, before the LORD to battle, as my lord saith.
So Moses gave orders to Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the leaders of the clans of Israel.28So concerning them Moses commanded Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the chief fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel:
He said, “The men of Gad and Reuben who are armed for battle must cross the Jordan with you to fight for the LORD. If they do, give them the land of Gilead as their property when the land is conquered.29And Moses said unto them, If the children of Gad and the children of Reuben will pass with you over Jordan, every man armed to battle, before the LORD, and the land shall be subdued before you; then ye shall give them the land of Gilead for a possession:
But if they refuse to arm themselves and cross over with you, then they must accept land with the rest of you in the land of Canaan.”30But if they will not pass over with you armed, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Canaan.
The tribes of Gad and Reuben said again, “We are your servants, and we will do as the LORD has commanded!31And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben answered, saying, As the LORD hath said unto thy servants, so will we do.
We will cross the Jordan into Canaan fully armed to fight for the LORD, but our property will be here on this side of the Jordan.”32We will pass over armed before the LORD into the land of Canaan, that the possession of our inheritance on this side Jordan may be ours.
So Moses assigned land to the tribes of Gad, Reuben, and half the tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph. He gave them the territory of King Sihon of the Amorites and the land of King Og of Bashan—the whole land with its cities and surrounding lands.33And Moses gave unto them, even to the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, and unto half the tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land, with the cities thereof in the coasts, even the cities of the country round about.
The descendants of Gad built the towns of Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer,34And the children of Gad built Dibon, and Ataroth, and Aroer,
Atroth-shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah,35And Atroth, Shophan, and Jaazer, and Jogbehah,
Beth-nimrah, and Beth-haran. These were all fortified towns with pens for their flocks.36And Bethnimrah, and Bethharan, fenced cities: and folds for sheep.
The descendants of Reuben built the towns of Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim,37And the children of Reuben built Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Kirjathaim,
Nebo, Baal-meon, and Sibmah. They changed the names of some of the towns they conquered and rebuilt.38And Nebo, and Baalmeon, (their names being changed,) and Shibmah: and gave other names unto the cities which they builded.
Then the descendants of Makir of the tribe of Manasseh went to Gilead and conquered it, and they drove out the Amorites living there.39And the children of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead, and took it, and dispossessed the Amorite which was in it.
So Moses gave Gilead to the Makirites, descendants of Manasseh, and they settled there.40And Moses gave Gilead unto Machir the son of Manasseh; and he dwelt therein.
The people of Jair, another clan of the tribe of Manasseh, captured many of the towns in Gilead and changed the name of that region to the Towns of Jair.41And Jair the son of Manasseh went and took the small towns thereof, and called them Havothjair.
Meanwhile, a man named Nobah captured the town of Kenath and its surrounding villages, and he renamed that area Nobah after himself.42And Nobah went and took Kenath, and the villages thereof, and called it Nobah, after his own name.
