Daniel’s Vision by the Tigris

In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia,

Around 536 BC, in the third year of Cyrus king of Persia, Jewish exiles were returning to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple, while Daniel remained in the Persian realm amid opposition and uncertainty.

a message was revealed to Daniel,

God again entrusted Daniel with knowledge concerning events beyond his own lifetime. Though advanced in age, Daniel remained a faithful servant and received further instruction about the future of Israel and the nations.

Daniel retained the Babylonian name Belteshazzar, possibly meaning “Bel protect the king,” assigned to him during his exile, but his identity and loyalty remained rooted in the God of Israel.

Dan 5:12 Daniel, the one he named Belteshazzar, was found…

The message was true,

The revelation came from God and would certainly be fulfilled, even though its content involved distant and difficult events.

The Tigris was one of Mesopotamia’s principal rivers, flowing through the lands of the Babylonian and Persian empires. Its location underscores that Daniel received this vision while Israel remained scattered among powerful nations, yet under the sovereign direction of God.

Only I, Daniel, saw the vision;

Daniel alone was permitted to see the heavenly messenger and receive the revelation intended for God’s people. His companions were present during the event, confirming that it occurred in a real setting, yet the vision was given specifically to Daniel because of his prophetic calling.

The unseen presence of divine power overwhelmed the men with fear. Their reaction shows that God’s revelation carried an unmistakable reality even for those who were not allowed to understand or behold it.

“Do not be afraid, Daniel,”

The heavenly messenger calms Daniel, whose encounter with the unseen realm had left him weakened. Though Daniel had received earlier visions, the presence and glory of the messenger remained overwhelming.

The message concerns Israel, Daniel’s people, and the future God had appointed for them beyond their Babylonian exile. Israel remains central to the unfolding events described in the vision.

The scope reaches beyond Daniel’s lifetime to the final period of history, when God’s purposes for Israel and the nations move toward their appointed completion.

Hos 3:5 Afterward, the people of Israel will return…

What Daniel is shown belongs to a future sequence of conflict, judgment, and ultimate deliverance. The events are fixed within God’s plan and will occur in the time He has determined.

Ezk 3:26 I will make your tongue stick to the roof of your mouth…

Isa 6:7 And with it he touched my mouth and said:…
Jer 1:9 Then the LORD reached out His hand, touched my mouth……
Ezk 3:27 But when I speak with you, I will open your mouth…

Ezk 2:1-2 “Son of man,” He said to me, “stand up on your feet”…
Luk 1:11-13 Just then an angel of the Lord appeared to Zechariah…

The revelation of coming conflicts and suffering had deeply troubled Daniel, leaving him distressed before the messenger.

Rev 1:17 When I saw Him, I fell at His feet like a dead man.…
Gen 15:12 As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep…

and I have no strength.

Daniel’s physical weakness reflected the weight of what he had seen and the limits of human strength before God’s revealed purposes.

Psa 38:10 My heart pounds, my strength fails, and even the light…
Psa 22:15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd…
Psa 73:26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is my portion…

How can I, your servant, speak with you, my lord?

Daniel is overcome by the vision and addresses the heavenly messenger with humility and respect. Though faithful and greatly beloved, he recognizes the vast difference between human weakness and the authority of God’s messenger.

Jos 5:14 “Neither,” He replied. “I have now come as Commander…”…
Exo 4:10 “Please, Lord,” Moses replied, “I have never been eloquent”…
Jer 1:6 “Ah, Lord GOD,” I said, “I surely do not know how to speak,…

Now I have no strength,

The encounter has left Daniel physically exhausted. The glory and seriousness of what he has seen reveal the limits of human strength before the realities of heaven.

Psa 38:10 My heart pounds, my strength fails, and even the light…
Psa 31:10 For my life is consumed with grief and my years with groaning…
Psa 22:15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd…

Daniel describes complete weakness and distress. He cannot respond or stand on his own, showing his need for strength supplied by God through the messenger.

The messenger’s touch brought direct reassurance and aid from God. Daniel’s encounter was not merely symbolic; he was physically affected by the vision and personally restored by the angelic visitor.

1Ki 19:5-7 Then he lay down under the broom tree…

and strengthened me.

God renewed Daniel’s strength so that he could receive the message concerning Israel’s future. The strengthening enabled him to stand, listen, and respond to the revelation entrusted to him.

Luk 22:43 Then an angel from heaven appeared to Him…
2Ti 4:17 But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me,…

“Do not be afraid, you who are highly precious,”

The heavenly messenger reassures Daniel, who had been overwhelmed by the vision and weakened by its weight. God regards Daniel as precious because of his faithful devotion and readiness to seek understanding.

Isa 43:4 Because you are precious and honored in My sight,…
Luk 1:30 So the angel told her, “Do not be afraid, Mary,…
Isa 41:10 Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid…

he said. “Peace be with you!

The messenger brings peace from God, calming Daniel in the presence of heavenly revelation. This peace assures him that he is not under judgment but is being prepared to receive what God has revealed.

Jhn 20:19 It was the first day of the week, and that very evening,…
Jdg 6:23 But the LORD said to him, “Peace be with you.…
Jhn 14:27 Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you.…

Be strong now; be very strong!”

Daniel is commanded to rise from his weakness with strength supplied by God. The repeated encouragement emphasizes that he will need divine strength to bear the message concerning future conflict and suffering.

Jos 1:9 Have I not commanded you to be strong and courageous?…
1Ch 28:20 David also said to Solomon his son, “Be strong…
Eph 6:10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.

As he spoke with me, I was strengthened and said,

The messenger’s words restore Daniel physically and inwardly. Having been renewed, Daniel is able to continue listening to the revelation.

Psa 119:28 My soul melts with sorrow; strengthen me…
Job 4:4 Your words have steadied those who stumbled;…
Isa 50:4 The Lord GOD has given Me the tongue of discipleship,…

“Speak, my lord, for you have strengthened me.”

Daniel respectfully asks the messenger to continue. He recognizes that the strength needed to receive and endure God’s message has been given to him.

1Sa 3:10 Then the LORD came and stood there, calling as before,…
Psa 138:3 On the day I called, You answered me; You emboldened me…
Isa 40:29 He gives power to the faint and increases the strength…

“Do you know why I have come to you?” he said.

Having strengthened Daniel, the heavenly messenger turns to the purpose of his appearance: to reveal what will happen to Daniel’s people in the latter days. His coming was not casual but part of God’s answer to Daniel’s prayer and mourning.

Dan 8:17 As he came near to where I stood, I was terrified…
Dan 9:21-23 while I was still praying, Gabriel, the man I had seen…
Luk 1:19 “I am Gabriel,” replied the angel. “I stand in the presence…”…

“I must return at once to fight against the prince of Persia,

The prince of Persia is a powerful spiritual ruler opposing God’s purposes in connection with the Persian Empire. Though Persia governed the Jewish people and permitted many exiles to return, unseen conflict continued behind the actions of earthly kings and kingdoms.
