Berean Study Bible Daniel’s Vision by the TigrisCyrus had conquered Babylon in 539 BC, and his decree had already opened the way for Jewish exiles to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the temple (Ezra 1:1–4). The year was about 536 BC, a season of restoration marked also by opposition, delay, and discouragement among the returned remnant. Daniel remained in Persia, likely as an elderly man, carrying the burden of his people before God. Ezr 1:1 In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia,… a message was revealed to Daniel, God continued to disclose His purposes through Daniel after the fall of Babylon. The revelation prepared Daniel to understand events affecting Israel under the Persian and Greek empires and to see that earthly history unfolds under God’s sovereign rule. Dan 2:19 During the night, the mystery was revealed to Daniel… who was called Belteshazzar. Babylon had given Daniel a name associated with its false god Bel—Belteshazzar, possibly meaning “Bel protect the king”—when he was taken from Judah (Daniel 1:7). The foreign name identified his place within a pagan court, but it did not alter his loyalty to the God of Israel or diminish God’s purpose for his life. Dan 1:7 The chief official gave them new names: To Daniel… The message was true, The revelation came from the God who rules nations and keeps His word. Its fulfillment in coming historical conflicts would confirm that God had not forgotten His covenant people, even while they remained weak and surrounded by powerful kingdoms. Dan 11:2 Now then, I will tell you the truth: Three more kings… and it concerned a great conflict. The message concerned a prolonged time of warfare and distress, including the struggles of Israel under future rulers. Behind the visible conflicts of kings and empires stood an unseen spiritual battle, revealed more fully in Daniel’s encounter with the angelic messenger. Dan 12:1 At that time Michael, the great prince who stands watch… And the understanding of the message was given to him in a vision. God granted Daniel insight into what he saw so that he could receive and preserve the revelation for God’s people. The vision in chapters 10–12 looks beyond immediate hardships to the final triumph of God’s kingdom and the resurrection of those who belong to Him. Dan 8:16 And I heard the voice of a man calling from between… In those days Daniel’s mourning occurred during the reign of Cyrus of Persia, after the first Jewish exiles had returned to Jerusalem. Although Cyrus had authorized the rebuilding of the temple, opposition and discouragement hindered the work, leaving God’s people in a vulnerable season. Ezr 1:1 In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia,… I, Daniel, Daniel identifies himself as the eyewitness to these events. Though he served in the Persian court and had received remarkable revelations, he remained deeply burdened for Jerusalem, the temple, and the fulfillment of God’s purposes for Israel. Dan 7:15 I, Daniel, was grieved in my spirit, and… was mourning Daniel’s grief was expressed through prayer, fasting, and humble self-denial. The following verse explains that he abstained from pleasant food, meat, wine, and personal comforts. His sorrow reflected spiritual discernment concerning the conflict surrounding God’s people and the weight of the revelation he had received. Ezr 10:6 Then Ezra withdrew from before the house of God… for three full weeks. Daniel persevered in seeking God for twenty-one days. His extended mourning prepared the setting for the angelic visitation and revelation that followed, revealing that spiritual conflict stood behind earthly events and that God hears the prayers of His faithful servants from the beginning. Num 20:29 When the whole congregation saw that Aaron had died,… I ate no rich food, Daniel set aside the delicacies associated with comfort, feasting, and courtly life during a season of mourning before God. Fasting in Scripture often accompanied earnest prayer, repentance, and the seeking of divine help, as seen in Esther’s appeal for Israel and Nineveh’s response to Jonah’s warning. Dan 1:8 But Daniel made up his mind not to defile himself… no meat or wine entered my mouth, Daniel’s abstinence from ordinary signs of abundance expressed humility and undivided attention to God. Though he lived within the Persian administration, he refused to let the privileges of his position dull his dependence upon the Lord. Dan 1:12 Please test your servants for ten days… and I did not anoint myself with oil Daniel also neglected customary grooming associated with refreshment and rejoicing. His outward self-denial matched the burden of his heart as he sought understanding concerning God’s people and the future revealed to him. 2Sa 14:2 So Joab sent to Tekoa to bring a wise woman from there.… until the three weeks were completed. Daniel persisted for twenty-one days rather than abandoning prayer when no immediate answer came. The heavenly messenger later revealed that Daniel’s prayer had been heard from the first day, while spiritual opposition delayed the messenger’s arrival, showing that faithful prayer participates in realities beyond what can be seen. Est 4:16 Go and assemble all the Jews who can be found… On the twenty-fourth day of the first month, The first month, Nisan, fell in March–April and included Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Daniel’s three weeks of mourning had ended at this time, marking a season when Israel remembered the Lord’s redemption from Egypt. While living under Persian rule, Daniel continued to seek God with humility and concern for His people. Ezr 6:19 On the fourteenth day of the first month,… as I was standing on the bank of the great river, Daniel stood apart at a place suited for solemn reflection and divine encounter. God had often revealed His purposes near waters, including Ezekiel’s visions by the Chebar Canal. Daniel’s posture shows readiness to receive what the Lord would disclose concerning Israel’s future. Ezk 1:1 In the thirtieth year, on the fifth day of the fourth month,… the Tigris, The Tigris was one of Mesopotamia’s great rivers, flowing through the lands dominated by Assyria, Babylon, and Persia. It is also identified with the Hiddekel, one of the rivers associated with Eden (Genesis 2:14). Daniel received this vision amid the power centers of the Gentile empires, yet the revelation would show that earthly kingdoms remain under God’s sovereign rule. Gen 2:14 The name of the third river is the Tigris;… I lifted up my eyes, Daniel’s attention was drawn from mourning and prayer to a revelation granted by God, opening his sight to the unseen spiritual realm. Dan 8:3 Then I lifted up my eyes and saw a ram with two horns… and behold, there was a certain man The man appeared in human form yet possessed heavenly glory, identifying him as a divine messenger sent with an answer concerning Israel’s future. Dan 8:15 While I, Daniel, was watching the vision… dressed in linen, Linen marked priestly purity and holiness, fitting one who stood in God’s presence and carried His message. Dan 12:6 One of them said to the man dressed in linen,… with a belt of fine gold from Uphaz around his waist. The costly gold displayed royal splendor and heavenly authority, echoing the glorious description of the risen Christ in Revelation 1:13. Jer 10:9 Hammered silver is brought from Tarshish,… His body was like beryl, The precious, radiant appearance of beryl portrayed the heavenly splendor of the messenger who came to Daniel. Beryl also appears among the foundations of the New Jerusalem (Revelation 21:20), linking its beauty with the glory of God’s eternal dwelling. Ezk 1:16 The workmanship of the wheels looked like the gleam of beryl… his face like the brilliance of lightning, The messenger’s radiance reflected the fearful majesty associated with God’s presence at Sinai (Exodus 19:16). Such overwhelming brightness also anticipates the unveiled glory of Christ, whose face shone like the sun at the transfiguration (Matthew 17:2). Mat 28:3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes… his eyes like flaming torches, Eyes like fire revealed searching knowledge, holy purity, and judgment against evil. The risen Christ is similarly described with eyes like a flame of fire (Revelation 1:14; 19:12), seeing fully what is hidden from human sight. Rev 1:14 The hair of His head was white like wool, as white as snow,… his arms and legs like the gleam of polished bronze, The shining bronze conveyed strength, stability, and readiness to act in God’s service. Bronze was associated with instruments of warfare and judgment, while the glorified Christ is pictured with feet like burnished bronze (Revelation 1:15). Rev 1:15 His feet were like polished bronze refined in a furnace,… and his voice like the sound of a multitude. The voice carried an authority too great for Daniel to bear comfortably, resembling the sound of many waters in Ezekiel’s vision of God’s glory (Ezekiel 43:2) and in John’s vision of the risen Christ (Revelation 1:15). Heaven’s messenger spoke with the weight of the Lord’s command, making clear that Daniel’s coming revelation concerned realities beyond human power. Ezk 43:2 I saw the glory of the God of Israel coming from the east.… Only I, Daniel, saw the vision; Daniel alone received the visible revelation, though others were present. God had set him apart to receive truth concerning Israel’s future and the conflict surrounding God’s purposes. His solitary experience resembles Paul’s encounter with the risen Christ, when those accompanying him perceived the effects of the event without sharing Paul’s full revelation (Acts 9:7; 22:9). Rev 1:10-17 On the Lord’s day I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me… the men with me did not see it, Daniel’s companions were not necessarily unbelieving, but they were not appointed to see what Daniel saw. The Lord gives prophetic revelation according to His sovereign purpose, entrusting His servants with messages they must faithfully preserve and proclaim. Daniel’s vision was not produced by human imagination, since its effects reached even those unable to behold its source. Act 9:7 The men traveling with Saul stood there speechless.… but a great terror fell upon them, The unseen presence of heavenly glory overwhelmed the men with Daniel. Similar fear fell upon the guards at Christ’s tomb and upon the shepherds when angels appeared. Fallen human beings cannot casually stand before the holy realm; even indirect exposure to divine majesty exposes human weakness and creates dread. Gen 35:5 As they set out, a terror from God fell… and they ran and hid themselves. The men fled as people often do when confronted by a reality beyond their control. Adam and Eve hid after sin entered the world, and Israel trembled at Sinai before the holiness of God. Daniel remained, not because he possessed natural strength, but because God had called and sustained him to receive the message entrusted to him. Rev 6:15-16 Then the kings of the earth, the nobles, the commanders… So I was left alone, Daniel’s companions had fled in terror, though they had not seen the heavenly being. Left by himself, Daniel received the revelation personally, as God had appointed him to understand matters concerning Israel’s future and the conflict surrounding God’s purposes. Gen 32:24 So Jacob was left all alone, and there a man wrestled with him… gazing at this great vision. Daniel beheld the glorious messenger described in the preceding verses, whose appearance reflected the majesty of the heavenly realm. The vision concerned the final period of distress and deliverance appointed for Daniel’s people. Act 7:55-56 But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked intently… No strength remained in me; The unveiled glory of God’s messenger exposed Daniel’s human frailty. Like Isaiah, Ezekiel, and John, Daniel could not endure such holiness and splendor in his own strength. Psa 38:10 My heart pounds, my strength fails, and even the light… my face grew deathly pale, Fear and physical collapse marked Daniel’s encounter with the supernatural. The sight brought him face-to-face with realities beyond human power and understanding. Nam 2:10 She is emptied! Yes, she is desolate and laid waste!… and I was powerless. Daniel’s inability to stand prepared him to receive strength from heaven. God’s servants are often made aware of their weakness before being equipped to hear, understand, and carry His message. Isa 40:29-31 He gives power to the faint and increases the strength… I heard the sound of his words, Daniel heard the heavenly messenger speak, confirming that the vision carried a personal and authoritative message from God. The encounter overwhelmed him, as divine revelation often did for the prophets. The messenger’s words introduced the final vision concerning Israel’s future conflicts and God’s sovereign purposes. Deu 4:12 And the LORD spoke to you out of the fire.… and as I listened, Daniel gave full attention to the message entrusted to him. Faithful servants of God receive His word with reverence, recognizing that obedience and understanding begin with hearing. Deu 5:27 Go near and listen to all that the LORD our God says.… I fell into a deep sleep, The weight of the vision and the presence of the angel overcame Daniel’s natural strength. His condition resembles other occasions when God brought His servants beyond ordinary awareness in order to reveal matters they could not discover by human wisdom. Dan 8:18 While he was speaking with me, I fell into a deep sleep,… with my face to the ground. Daniel’s posture displayed helplessness, humility, and reverence before the holiness of God. Even this faithful prophet could not stand in his own strength before heaven’s glory, yet God would raise him and strengthen him for the message he was called to receive. Jos 5:14 “Neither,” He replied. “I have now come as Commander…”… Suddenly, a hand touched me Daniel lay overwhelmed by the vision when a heavenly messenger came near and strengthened him. God did not leave His servant in terror but sent help, as He had done through Gabriel in earlier revelations to Daniel. Dan 8:18 While he was speaking with me, I fell into a deep sleep,… and set me trembling The touch raised Daniel from complete helplessness, yet the weight of the divine encounter still shook him. His trembling reflects reverent fear before the holiness and authority of heaven, especially as he was about to hear of spiritual conflict and future events affecting Israel. Dan 8:17 As he came near to where I stood, I was terrified… on my hands and knees. Daniel remained low before the messenger, humbled and dependent upon divine strength. From this posture of submission, he would be prepared to hear that he was deeply loved and to receive the message for which he had prayed and fasted. Ezr 9:5 At the evening offering, I got up from my humiliation… He said to me, The heavenly messenger addressed Daniel personally after strengthening him from his overwhelmed condition. The speaker’s authority came from God, who had heard Daniel’s prayer from the first day he sought understanding. Zec 1:9 “What are these, my lord?” I asked. And the angel… “Daniel, you are a man who is highly precious. Daniel’s beloved standing before God rested in the Lord’s gracious favor and was evidenced by a life of faithful obedience. The same assurance had been given during Daniel’s earlier vision (Daniel 9:23), confirming that heaven had not overlooked his mourning, prayer, or service. Dan 9:23 At the beginning of your petitions, an answer went out… Consider carefully the words that I am about to say to you. Daniel was to give full attention to the revelation concerning the future conflict of nations and God’s purposes for His people. Divine revelation calls for humble attentiveness, since its meaning and fulfillment belong to the Lord. Pro 4:20-21 My son, pay attention to my words; incline your ear… Stand up, for I have now been sent to you.” The command restored Daniel to a posture of readiness before God’s messenger. The angel had been commissioned to bring Daniel understanding, showing that God answers His servants according to His wise timing and purpose. Act 26:16 But get up and stand on your feet. For I have appeared… And when he had said this to me, I stood up trembling. Daniel obeyed, though still shaken by the weight of the encounter. His trembling reflects reverent fear in the presence of heavenly glory and the sobering nature of the revelation entrusted to him. Dan 8:17-18 As he came near to where I stood, I was terrified… “Do not be afraid, Daniel,” The heavenly messenger calms Daniel, whose strength had failed before the unveiled glory of the spiritual realm. God does not send revelation to destroy His servant but to strengthen him for the truth he must receive. Luk 1:13 But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah,… he said, The angel speaks with authority as God’s messenger, bringing an answer from the heavenly court. Gabriel had previously been sent to Daniel with understanding, and this messenger likewise serves God’s purpose of revealing events that concern His people. Gen 22:11 Just then the angel of the LORD called out to him… “for from the first day that you purposed to understand and to humble yourself before your God, Daniel had sought understanding concerning the vision and had humbled himself through mourning, fasting, and prayer. His posture joined diligent pursuit of God’s truth with dependence upon God’s mercy, showing that spiritual understanding is received by those who submit themselves to the Lord. 1Ki 3:9 Therefore give Your servant an understanding heart… your words were heard, God heard Daniel immediately, even though the visible answer was delayed. The delay did not indicate divine indifference; heaven had received Daniel’s prayer from the beginning. Act 10:31 Cornelius, your prayer has been heard, and your gifts… and I have come in response to them. The messenger’s arrival reveals that Daniel’s prayer was involved in God’s unfolding purpose. The following account shows that opposition in the spiritual realm delayed the messenger, yet God’s answer prevailed, confirming that prayer matters within the real conflict between the kingdom of God and the powers opposed to Him. Act 12:11 Then Peter came to himself and said, “Now I know for sure… However, the prince of the kingdom of Persia opposed me for twenty-one days. The prince of Persia was a spiritual ruler working behind the Persian Empire, resisting the angel sent in response to Daniel’s prayer. Daniel’s three weeks of mourning and petition coincided with this conflict, revealing that God heard him from the first day even though the answer was delayed (Daniel 10:2–3, 12). Earthly kingdoms and events are not independent of the unseen realm; spiritual powers oppose God’s purposes, yet remain under His sovereign authority. Believers likewise contend not merely with human opposition but with spiritual forces of evil (Ephesians 6:12). Eph 2:2 in which you used to walk when you conformed… Then Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, Michael is a high-ranking angelic prince and the special defender of Israel (Daniel 12:1; Jude 9). His arrival turned the conflict, showing that God provides the strength and help required to accomplish His will. The struggle was real, but the Persian spiritual ruler could not finally prevent God’s message from reaching Daniel. Dan 12:1 At that time Michael, the great prince who stands watch… for I had been left there with the kings of Persia. The angel remained engaged against the spiritual powers connected with Persia until Michael came to assist him. The plural kings may point to the succession of Persian rulers or to the spiritual authorities operating over that empire. Behind Persia’s political rise and decisions stood an unseen conflict, yet God was directing history toward the fulfillment of His purposes for Israel and the coming kingdom of Christ. Dan 11:2 Now then, I will tell you the truth: Three more kings… Now I have come to explain to you A heavenly messenger came by God’s command to give Daniel understanding that human wisdom could not supply. The conflict described in Daniel 10:12–13 shows that heaven’s purposes are opposed by real spiritual forces, yet God’s word reaches His servant at the appointed time. Dan 8:16 And I heard the voice of a man calling from between… what will happen to your people Daniel’s people are Israel, the nation chosen through Abraham and bound to God by covenant. Although Israel was scattered and humbled in exile, God had not abandoned His promises concerning their future, their land, their Messiah, and their ultimate restoration. Num 24:14 Now I am going back to my people, but come… in the latter days, The prophecy reaches beyond Daniel’s lifetime and beyond the immediate return from Babylon. Daniel 11 and 12 disclose events affecting Israel through succeeding empires and leading toward the time of the end, when God will judge wicked rulers, deliver His people, and establish His righteous kingdom. Deu 4:30 When you are in distress and all these things have happened… for the vision concerns those days.” The coming revelation belongs to God’s fixed plan for history. What Daniel would see included near historical fulfillments and events still awaiting their final completion, demonstrating that the Lord rules over kings, nations, conflicts, and the destiny of Israel. Ezk 12:27 “Son of man, take note that the house of Israel is saying… While he was speaking these words to me, The heavenly messenger continued unfolding God’s appointed purposes for Israel and the nations. Daniel received the revelation not as human speculation but as divine communication mediated by an angelic servant. Act 10:44 While Peter was still speaking these words, … I set my face toward the ground Daniel responded with reverent humility before the majesty of God’s message and the presence of His messenger. Like Moses before the burning bush and John before the glorified Christ, Daniel recognized the overwhelming distance between human weakness and heavenly glory. Dan 8:18 While he was speaking with me, I fell into a deep sleep,… and became speechless. The weight of the revelation left Daniel without strength or words. His silence testified both to the seriousness of what God was revealing and to the dependence of every prophet upon God’s enabling grace. Mat 22:12 ‘Friend,’ he asked, ‘how did you get in here… And suddenly one with the likeness of a man touched my lips, The heavenly messenger appeared in human form and strengthened Daniel at the point of speech. The touch recalls Isaiah’s cleansing and commissioning in Isaiah 6:7, yet Daniel’s need was not purification but renewed ability to speak after being overwhelmed by the vision. Isa 6:7 And with it he touched my mouth and said:… and I opened my mouth and said to the one standing before me, Daniel’s restored speech enabled him to respond honestly to the messenger. The angel who stood before him had been sent with God’s revelation and remained present to sustain Daniel through its weight. Jos 5:13-15 Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw… “My lord, because of the vision, I am overcome with anguish, Daniel addressed the messenger with reverence, acknowledging the authority of one sent from God. The vision of conflict among earthly kingdoms and the spiritual warfare surrounding them had left him deeply distressed. Isa 6:5 Then I said: “Woe is me, for I am ruined,… and I have no strength. Daniel’s weakness reveals the frailty of man before heavenly glory and divine revelation. God did not abandon Daniel in his weakness but provided strength so that he could receive and record the message entrusted to him. Psa 38:10 My heart pounds, my strength fails, and even the light… How can I, your servant, speak with you, my lord? Daniel’s humility reflects his awareness that he stands before a heavenly messenger sent from God. Though Daniel had served faithfully in positions of influence under Babylonian and Persian rulers, he recognized his frailty before the authority of heaven. Similar reverence marked Moses, Isaiah, Ezekiel, and John when they encountered God’s glory or angelic messengers. Daniel could not presume to speak freely while overcome by the weight of the revelation. Jos 5:14 “Neither,” He replied. “I have now come as Commander…”… Now I have no strength, The vision had drained Daniel physically, revealing the sharp contrast between human weakness and the power of God’s presence. Earlier, Daniel had fallen into a deep sleep and lost his strength at the angel’s appearance (Daniel 10:9–10). God’s servants are not sustained by natural ability when called to receive divine revelation; they must be strengthened by God Himself. Psa 38:10 My heart pounds, my strength fails, and even the light… nor is any breath left in me.” Daniel described utter exhaustion, as though life itself had ebbed from him. Breath belongs to God, who formed man from dust and gave him the breath of life (Genesis 2:7). The heavenly messenger would soon touch and strengthen Daniel, showing that the God who reveals future conflicts and kingdoms also supplies the strength needed to receive His word. 1Ki 17:17 Later, the son of the woman who owned the house… Again the one with the likeness of a man The heavenly messenger appeared in a form Daniel could endure, though the encounter still revealed the overwhelming holiness and power of God’s presence. The being is not named in this chapter, yet his humanlike appearance recalls Gabriel’s earlier ministry to Daniel (Daniel 8:15–16; 9:21). Angels often appeared as men when sent to deliver God’s word, as with the visitors to Abraham and the angels who came to Lot. God made His message accessible without reducing the majesty of the heavenly realm. Dan 8:15 While I, Daniel, was watching the vision… touched me Daniel had been physically weakened by the vision and by the spiritual conflict surrounding the messenger’s arrival. The touch conveyed personal reassurance as well as divine authority. God’s servants are not merely given revelation; they are sustained to receive it. The Lord similarly strengthened His prophets when they were overcome by His presence, and Jesus touched the weak, afflicted, and fearful with restoring compassion. Dan 8:18 While he was speaking with me, I fell into a deep sleep,… and strengthened me. The strength Daniel received enabled him to hear the message concerning Israel’s future and to remain faithful under the burden of what was revealed. God supplies strength proportionate to the task He assigns. Daniel’s renewal anticipates the promise that the Lord gives power to the faint and increases strength to those who have no might (Isaiah 40:29–31). 1Ki 19:8 So he got up and ate and drank. And strengthened by that food… “Do not be afraid, you who are highly precious,” Daniel had been overwhelmed by the glory of the heavenly messenger and weakened by the weight of the revelation. Yet heaven’s response to Daniel’s fear began with assurance. God had heard Daniel’s prayer from the first day of his mourning and regarded him as greatly beloved, as He had already declared in Daniel 9:23. Daniel’s value before God rested not on personal strength, but on God’s gracious regard for a faithful servant. Isa 43:4 Because you are precious and honored in My sight,… he said. “Peace be with you! God’s peace met Daniel in the presence of heavenly majesty. The peace offered was more than relief from fear; it carried the assurance of God’s favor, protection, and purpose. Though Daniel had received troubling visions concerning future conflict, God had not abandoned His people or His servant. Jhn 20:19 It was the first day of the week, and that very evening,… Be strong now; be very strong!” The repeated command supplied the courage Daniel lacked. Like Joshua before entering the land and the prophets called to difficult service, Daniel was strengthened to receive and bear God’s word. The coming revelation would include warfare, suffering, and the rise and fall of kingdoms, but God’s sovereign rule stood over every earthly power. Jos 1:9 Have I not commanded you to be strong and courageous?… As he spoke with me, I was strengthened and said, The messenger’s words accomplished what Daniel could not produce in himself. God often prepares His servants for revelation and service by first humbling them, then restoring them through His presence and word. Daniel’s renewed strength enabled him to listen rather than collapse under the burden of what he was shown. Psa 119:28 My soul melts with sorrow; strengthen me… “Speak, my lord, for you have strengthened me.” Daniel responded with reverence and willing obedience. Addressing the heavenly messenger as lord acknowledged the authority of one sent from God. Strengthened by divine encouragement, Daniel was ready to receive the further revelation concerning Persia, Greece, Israel, and the conflict surrounding God’s people. 1Sa 3:10 Then the LORD came and stood there, calling as before,… “Do you know why I have come to you?” he said. The heavenly messenger came in answer to Daniel’s mourning, fasting, and prayer for understanding concerning Israel’s future. God had heard Daniel from the first day, yet the delivery of the message involved conflict in the unseen realm. Daniel’s visions concerned coming kingdoms, persecution, and God’s final deliverance of His people; the messenger’s arrival confirmed that these matters proceeded according to God’s appointed purpose. Dan 8:17 As he came near to where I stood, I was terrified… “I must return at once to fight against the prince of Persia, The prince of Persia was a hostile spiritual ruler connected with the Persian Empire, not the human Persian king. The angel had already encountered resistance from this power for twenty-one days until Michael came to help him (Daniel 10:13). Persia remained the ruling empire during Daniel’s lifetime and would permit Jewish exiles to return and rebuild Jerusalem, yet spiritual opposition continued even within events God governed for Israel’s good. Earthly rulers and empires operate under God’s sovereignty, while spiritual powers seek to oppose His purposes. Eph 6:12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood,… and when I have gone forth, behold, the prince of Greece will come. Greece would rise after Persia, as Daniel had previously been shown in the visions of the great image, the beasts, and the ram and goat (Daniel 2; 7; 8). Alexander the Great’s conquests would bring the Greek Empire to power and eventually lead to severe oppression of the Jewish people under Antiochus IV. The coming of another hostile prince reveals that the conflict would continue as empires changed. God’s people are not abandoned amid such warfare, for the Lord directs the course of kingdoms and appoints Michael to stand for His people. Dan 8:21-22 The shaggy goat represents the king of Greece,… But first I will tell you what is inscribed in the Book of Truth. The Book of Truth records God’s settled purposes for the nations and for His people. What Daniel receives has been established in heaven and will unfold according to God’s sovereign will. The coming conflicts of Persia, Greece, Israel, and the final kingdom are neither accidental nor beyond the Lord’s rule. God’s decrees stand with the same certainty as His record of the redeemed in the Book of Life. Psa 56:8 You have taken account of my wanderings.… Yet no one has the courage to support me against these, The angel speaks of opposition from the spiritual princes associated with Persia and Greece. Behind earthly kingdoms stand hostile powers that resist God’s purposes and seek to hinder His servants. Daniel’s vision reveals that political events on earth are connected to conflict in the unseen realm. God’s messengers carry out His will amid real spiritual warfare, yet the outcome remains governed by the Lord’s written plan. Isa 63:5 I looked, but there was no one to help;… except Michael your prince. Michael is the heavenly prince appointed to defend Israel. He stands uniquely with God’s messenger against the powers opposing the covenant people and will arise again during Israel’s future time of distress. His presence assures Daniel that Israel is not abandoned among the empires that threaten her. God has assigned powerful protection to His people while preserving them for the fulfillment of His redemptive purposes.
