Josiah Renews the Covenant
(2 Chronicles 34:29–33)

1  וַיִּשְׁלַ֖ח (And sent them) הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ (the king), וַיַּאַסְפ֣וּ (and they gathered) אֵלָ֔יו (to him) כָּל־ (all) זִקְנֵ֥י (the elders) יְהוּדָ֖ה (of Judah) וִירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ (and Jerusalem). 2  וַיַּ֣עַל (And went up) הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ (the king) בֵּית־ (to the house) יְהוָ֡ה (of YHWH), וְכָל־ (and all) אִ֣ישׁ (the men) יְהוּדָה֩ (of Judah), וְכָל־ (and all) יֹשְׁבֵ֨י (the dwellers) יְרוּשָׁלִַ֜ם (of Jerusalem) אִתּ֗וֹ (with him), וְהַכֹּֽהֲנִים֙ (and the priests), וְהַנְּבִיאִ֔ים (and the prophets), וְכָל־ (and all) הָעָ֖ם (the people) לְמִקָּטֹ֣ן (from small) וְעַד־ (and to) גָּד֑וֹל (great), וַיִּקְרָ֣א (and he read) בְאָזְנֵיהֶ֗ם (in their ears) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) דִּבְרֵי֙ (the words) סֵ֣פֶר (of the Book) הַבְּרִ֔ית (of the Covenant) הַנִּמְצָ֖א (found) בְּבֵ֥ית (in the house) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).

3  וַיַּעֲמֹ֣ד (And stood) הַ֠מֶּלֶךְ (the king) עַֽל־ (by) הָ֨עַמּ֜וּד (the pillar), וַיִּכְרֹ֥ת (and he cut) אֶֽת־ (-) הַבְּרִ֣ית׀ (the covenant) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face of) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH), לָלֶ֜כֶת (to walk) אַחַ֤ר (after) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) וְלִשְׁמֹ֨ר (and to keep) מִצְוֺתָ֜יו (His commandments) וְאֶת־ (and) עֵדְוֺתָ֤יו (His testimonies) וְאֶת־ (and) חֻקֹּתָיו֙ (His statutes) בְּכָל־ (with all) לֵ֣ב (the heart) וּבְכָל־ (and with all) נֶ֔פֶשׁ (the soul), לְהָקִ֗ים (to establish) אֶת־ (-) דִּבְרֵי֙ (the words) הַבְּרִ֣ית (of the covenant) הַזֹּ֔את (this) הַכְּתֻבִ֖ים (written) עַל־ (in) הַסֵּ֣פֶר (the book) הַזֶּ֑ה (this). וַיַּעֲמֹ֥ד (Stood) כָּל־ (all) הָעָ֖ם (the people) בַּבְּרִֽית׃ (in the covenant).

Josiah Destroys Idolatry
(1 Kings 13:1–10; 2 Chronicles 34:3–7)

4  וַיְצַ֣ו (And commanded) הַמֶּ֡לֶךְ (the king) אֶת־ (-) חִלְקִיָּהוּ֩ (Hilkiah) הַכֹּהֵ֨ן (the priest) הַגָּד֜וֹל (high) וְאֶת־ (and) כֹּהֲנֵ֣י (the priests) הַמִּשְׁנֶה֮ (of the second rank), וְאֶת־ (and) שֹׁמְרֵ֣י (the keepers) הַסַּף֒ (of the threshold), לְהוֹצִיא֙ (to bring) מֵהֵיכַ֣ל (out of the temple) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) אֵ֣ת (-) כָּל־ (all) הַכֵּלִ֗ים (the articles) הָֽעֲשׂוּיִם֙ (made) לַבַּ֣עַל (for the Baal), וְלָֽאֲשֵׁרָ֔ה (and for the Asherah), וּלְכֹ֖ל (and for all) צְבָ֣א (the host) הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם (of the heavens). וַֽיִּשְׂרְפֵ֞ם (And he burned them) מִח֤וּץ (outside) לִירוּשָׁלִַ֙ם֙ (Jerusalem) בְּשַׁדְמ֣וֹת (in the fields) קִדְר֔וֹן (of Kidron) וְנָשָׂ֥א (and carried) אֶת־ (-) עֲפָרָ֖ם (their ashes) בֵּֽית־ (to Beth-) אֵֽל׃ (el).

5  וְהִשְׁבִּ֣ית (And he removed) אֶת־ (-) הַכְּמָרִ֗ים (the idolatrous priests) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (whom) נָֽתְנוּ֙ (had ordained) מַלְכֵ֣י (the kings) יְהוּדָ֔ה (of Judah) וַיְקַטֵּ֤ר (and they burned incense) בַּבָּמוֹת֙ (on the high places) בְּעָרֵ֣י (in the cities) יְהוּדָ֔ה (of Judah) וּמְסִבֵּ֖י (and in the places all around) יְרוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (Jerusalem)) וְאֶת־ (and) הַֽמְקַטְּרִ֣ים (those who burned incense) לַבַּ֗עַל (to the Baal), לַשֶּׁ֤מֶשׁ (to the sun), וְלַיָּרֵ֙חַ֙ (and to the moon), וְלַמַּזָּל֔וֹת (and to the constellations), וּלְכֹ֖ל (and to all) צְבָ֥א (the host) הַשָּׁמָֽיִם׃ (of the heavens).

6  וַיֹּצֵ֣א (And he brought out) אֶת־ (-) הָאֲשֵׁרָה֩ (the Asherah pole) מִבֵּ֨ית (from the house) יְהוָ֜ה (of YHWH) מִח֤וּץ (outside) לִירוּשָׁלִַ֙ם֙ (Jerusalem), אֶל־ (to) נַ֣חַל (the Valley) קִדְר֔וֹן (Kidron), וַיִּשְׂרֹ֥ף (and he burned) אֹתָ֛הּ (it) בְּנַ֥חַל (in the Valley) קִדְר֖וֹן (Kidron) וַיָּ֣דֶק (of and he crushed it) לְעָפָ֑ר (to a dust) וַיַּשְׁלֵךְ֙ (and threw) אֶת־ (-) עֲפָרָ֔הּ (its dust) עַל־ (on) קֶ֖בֶר (the graves) בְּנֵ֥י (of the sons) הָעָֽם׃ (of the people). 7  וַיִּתֹּץ֙ (And he tore down) אֶת־ (-) בָּתֵּ֣י (the houses) הַקְּדֵשִׁ֔ים (of the male shrine prostitutes) אֲשֶׁ֖ר (that were) בְּבֵ֣ית (in the house) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (where) הַנָּשִׁ֗ים (the women) אֹרְג֥וֹת (had woven) שָׁ֛ם (there) בָּתִּ֖ים (houses) לָאֲשֵׁרָֽה׃ (for the Asherah).

8  וַיָּבֵ֤א (And he brought) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) הַכֹּֽהֲנִים֙ (the priests) מֵעָרֵ֣י (from the cities) יְהוּדָ֔ה (of Judah) וַיְטַמֵּ֣א (and he defiled) אֶת־ (-) הַבָּמ֗וֹת (the high places) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (where) קִטְּרוּ־ (had burned incense) שָׁ֙מָּה֙ (there) הַכֹּ֣הֲנִ֔ים (the priests), מִגֶּ֖בַע (from Geba) עַד־ (to) בְּאֵ֣ר (Beer-) שָׁ֑בַע (sheba), וְנָתַ֞ץ (and he broke down) אֶת־ (-) בָּמ֣וֹת (the high places) הַשְּׁעָרִ֗ים (of the gates) אֲשֶׁר־ (that were) פֶּ֜תַח (at the entrance) שַׁ֤עַר (of the gate) יְהוֹשֻׁ֙עַ֙ (of Joshua) שַׂר־ (the governor) הָעִ֔יר (of the city) אֲשֶֽׁר־ (that were) עַל־ (on) שְׂמֹ֥אול (the left) אִ֖ישׁ (of a man) בְּשַׁ֥עַר (at the gate) הָעִֽיר׃ (of the city). 9  אַ֗ךְ (Only) לֹ֤א (not) יַֽעֲלוּ֙ (did come up) כֹּהֲנֵ֣י (the priests) הַבָּמ֔וֹת (of the high places) אֶל־ (to) מִזְבַּ֥ח (the altar) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (in Jerusalem), כִּ֛י (but) אִם־ (rather) אָכְל֥וּ (they ate) מַצּ֖וֹת (unleavened things) בְּת֥וֹךְ (in the midst) אֲחֵיהֶֽם׃ (of their brothers).

10  וְטִמֵּ֣א (And he defiled) אֶת־ (-) הַתֹּ֔פֶת (Topheth), אֲשֶׁ֖ר (which is) בְּגֵ֣י (in the Valley of) בְנֵי (of Ben-) הִנֹּ֑ם (hinnom), לְבִלְתִּ֗י (so that not) לְהַעֲבִ֨יר (could make pass) אִ֜ישׁ (a man) אֶת־ (-) בְּנ֧וֹ (his son) וְאֶת־ (or) בִּתּ֛וֹ (his daughter) בָּאֵ֖שׁ (through the fire) לַמֹּֽלֶךְ׃ (to Molech). 11  וַיַּשְׁבֵּ֣ת (And he removed) אֶת־ (-) הַסּוּסִ֗ים (the horses) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) נָתְנוּ֩ (had dedicated) מַלְכֵ֨י (the kings) יְהוּדָ֤ה (of Judah) לַשֶּׁ֙מֶשׁ֙ (to the sun), מִבֹּ֣א (from the entrance) בֵית־ (to the house) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH), אֶל־ (by) לִשְׁכַּת֙ (the chamber) נְתַן־ (of Nathan-) מֶ֣לֶךְ (melech) הַסָּרִ֔יס (the officer), אֲשֶׁ֖ר (who was) בַּפַּרְוָרִ֑ים (in the parbarim). וְאֶת־ (And) מַרְכְּב֥וֹת (the chariots) הַשֶּׁ֖מֶשׁ (of the sun) שָׂרַ֥ף (he burned) בָּאֵֽשׁ׃ (with the fire).

12  וְאֶֽת־ (And) הַֽמִּזְבְּח֡וֹת (the altars) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that were) עַל־ (on) הַגָּג֩ (the roof) עֲלִיַּ֨ת (the upper chamber) אָחָ֜ז (of Ahaz), אֲשֶׁר־ (which) עָשׂ֣וּ׀ (had made) מַלְכֵ֣י (the kings) יְהוּדָ֗ה (of Judah), וְאֶת־ (and) הַֽמִּזְבְּחוֹת֙ (the altars) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) עָשָׂ֣ה (had made) מְנַשֶּׁ֔ה (Manasseh) בִּשְׁתֵּ֛י (in two) חַצְר֥וֹת (the courts) בֵּית־ (of the house) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH), נָתַ֣ץ (broke down) הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ (the king) וַיָּ֣רָץ (and pulverized them) מִשָּׁ֔ם (there), וְהִשְׁלִ֥יךְ (and he threw) אֶת־ (-) עֲפָרָ֖ם (their dust) אֶל־ (into) נַ֥חַל (the Valley) קִדְרֽוֹן׃ (Kidron).

13  וְֽאֶת־ (And) הַבָּמ֞וֹת (the high places) אֲשֶׁ֣ר׀ (that were) עַל־ (on) פְּנֵ֣י (the face) יְרוּשָׁלִַ֗ם (Jerusalem), אֲשֶׁר֮ (that were) מִימִ֣ין (on the right) לְהַר־ (of the Mount) הַמַּשְׁחִית֒ (of Corruption), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (which) בָּ֠נָה (had built) שְׁלֹמֹ֨ה (Solomon) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל (of Israel) לְעַשְׁתֹּ֣רֶת׀ (for Ashtoreth) שִׁקֻּ֣ץ (the abomination) צִידֹנִ֗ים (of the Sidonians), וְלִכְמוֹשׁ֙ (and for Chemosh) שִׁקֻּ֣ץ (the abomination) מוֹאָ֔ב (of the Moabites), וּלְמִלְכֹּ֖ם (and for Milcom) תּוֹעֲבַ֣ת (the abomination) בְּנֵֽי־ (of the sons) עַמּ֑וֹן (Ammon), טִמֵּ֖א (defiled) הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ (the king). 14  וְשִׁבַּר֙ (And he broke in pieces) אֶת־ (-) הַמַּצֵּב֔וֹת (the pillars), וַיִּכְרֹ֖ת (and he cut down) אֶת־ (-) הָאֲשֵׁרִ֑ים (the Asherah poles), וַיְמַלֵּ֥א (and he filled) אֶת־ (-) מְקוֹמָ֖ם (their places) עַצְמ֥וֹת (with the bones) אָדָֽם׃ (of men).

15  וְגַ֨ם (Moreover) אֶת־ (-) הַמִּזְבֵּ֜חַ (the altar) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that was) בְּבֵֽית־ (at Beth-) אֵ֗ל (el) הַבָּמָה֙ (and the high place) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) עָשָׂ֜ה (had made) יָרָבְעָ֤ם (Jeroboam) בֶּן־ (son) נְבָט֙ (of Nebat), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who) הֶחֱטִ֣יא (caused to sin) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (Israel)— גַּ֣ם (both) אֶת־ (-) הַמִּזְבֵּ֧חַ (altar) הַה֛וּא (that) וְאֶת־ (and) הַבָּמָ֖ה (the high place)— נָתָ֑ץ (he broke down), וַיִּשְׂרֹ֧ף (and he burned) אֶת־ (-) הַבָּמָ֛ה (the high place) הֵדַ֥ק (and crushed it) לְעָפָ֖ר (to powder) וְשָׂרַ֥ף (and he burned) אֲשֵׁרָֽה׃ (the Asherah pole). 16  וַיִּ֣פֶן (And turned) יֹאשִׁיָּ֗הוּ (Josiah) וַיַּ֨רְא (and he saw) אֶת־ (-) הַקְּבָרִ֤ים (the tombs) אֲשֶׁר־ (that were) שָׁם֙ (there) בָּהָ֔ר (on the mountain), וַיִּשְׁלַ֗ח (and he sent) וַיִּקַּ֤ח (and took) אֶת־ (-) הָֽעֲצָמוֹת֙ (the bones) מִן־ (out) הַקְּבָרִ֔ים (of the tombs) וַיִּשְׂרֹ֥ף (and he burned them) עַל־ (on) הַמִּזְבֵּ֖חַ (the altar) וַֽיְטַמְּאֵ֑הוּ (and defiled it) כִּדְבַ֣ר (according to the word) יְהוָ֗ה (of YHWH) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) קָרָא֙ (had proclaimed) אִ֣ישׁ (the man) הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים (of God) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who) קָרָ֔א (had proclaimed) אֶת־ (-) הַדְּבָרִ֖ים (the words) הָאֵֽלֶּה׃ (these).

17  וַיֹּ֕אמֶר (And he said), מָ֚ה (What is) הַצִּיּ֣וּן (the monumen) הַלָּ֔ז (this) אֲשֶׁ֖ר (that) אֲנִ֣י (I) רֹאֶ֑ה (see)?

וַיֹּאמְר֨וּ (And said) אֵלָ֜יו (to him) אַנְשֵׁ֣י (the men) הָעִ֗יר (of the city), הַקֶּ֤בֶר (It is the tomb) אִישׁ־ (of the man) הָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ (of God) אֲשֶׁר־ (who) בָּ֣א (came) מִֽיהוּדָ֔ה (from Judah) וַיִּקְרָ֗א (and proclaimed) אֶת־ (-) הַדְּבָרִ֤ים (the things) הָאֵ֙לֶּה֙ (these) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) עָשִׂ֔יתָ (you have done) עַ֖ל (against) הַמִּזְבַּ֥ח (the altar) בֵּֽית־ (of Beth-) אֵֽל׃ (el).

18  וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (And he said) הַנִּ֣יחוּ (Let alone) ל֔וֹ (him). אִ֖ישׁ (Man) אַל־ (not) יָנַ֣ע (let move) עַצְמֹתָ֑יו (his bones).

וַֽיְמַלְּטוּ֙ (And they let alone) עַצְמֹתָ֔יו (his bones) אֵ֚ת (with) עַצְמ֣וֹת (the bones) הַנָּבִ֔יא (of the prophet) אֲשֶׁר־ (who) בָּ֖א (came) מִשֹּׁמְרֽוֹן׃ (from Samaria).

19  וְגַם֩ (And also) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) בָּתֵּ֨י (the shrines) הַבָּמ֜וֹת (of the high places) אֲשֶׁ֣ר׀ (that were) בְּעָרֵ֣י (in the cities) שֹׁמְר֗וֹן (of Samaria), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (which) עָשׂ֜וּ (had made) מַלְכֵ֤י (the kings) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel) לְהַכְעִ֔יס (to provoke anger), הֵסִ֖יר (took away) יֹֽאשִׁיָּ֑הוּ (Josiah). וַיַּ֣עַשׂ (And he did) לָהֶ֔ם (to them) כְּכָל־ (according to all) הַֽמַּעֲשִׂ֔ים (the deeds) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) עָשָׂ֖ה (he had done) בְּבֵֽית־ (in Beth-) אֵֽל׃ (el). 20  וַ֠יִּזְבַּח (And he slaughtered) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) כֹּהֲנֵ֨י (the priests) הַבָּמ֤וֹת (of the high places) אֲשֶׁר־ (who were) שָׁם֙ (there) עַל־ (on) הַֽמִּזְבְּח֔וֹת (the altars), וַיִּשְׂרֹ֛ף (and he burned) אֶת־ (-) עַצְמ֥וֹת (the bones) אָדָ֖ם (of man) עֲלֵיהֶ֑ם (on them). וַיָּ֖שָׁב (And he returned) יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ (to Jerusalem).

Josiah Restores the Passover
(2 Chronicles 35:1–19)

21  וַיְצַ֤ו (And commanded) הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ (the king) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) הָעָ֣ם (the people), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), עֲשׂ֣וּ (Make) פֶ֔סַח (a Passover) לַֽיהוָ֖ה (to YHWH) אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֑ם (your⁺ God), כַּכָּת֕וּב (as it is written) עַ֛ל (in) סֵ֥פֶר (Book) הַבְּרִ֖ית (of the Covenant) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this).

22  כִּ֣י (For) לֹ֤א (not) נַֽעֲשָׂה֙ (it had been done) כַּפֶּ֣סַח (like Passover) הַזֶּ֔ה (this) מִימֵי֙ (since the days) הַשֹּׁ֣פְטִ֔ים (of the judges) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who) שָׁפְט֖וּ (judged) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (Israel), וְכֹ֗ל (and all) יְמֵ֛י (the days) מַלְכֵ֥י (of the kings) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) וּמַלְכֵ֥י (and the kings) יְהוּדָֽה׃ (of Judah). 23  כִּ֗י (For) אִם־ (but) בִּשְׁמֹנֶ֤ה (in the eight) עֶשְׂרֵה֙ (and tenth) שָׁנָ֔ה (the year) לַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (of King) יֹֽאשִׁיָּ֑הוּ (Josiah) נַעֲשָׂ֞ה (was done) הַפֶּ֧סַח (the Passover) הַזֶּ֛ה (this) לַיהוָ֖ה (to YHWH) בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ (in Jerusalem).

24  וְגַ֣ם (Moreover) אֶת־ (-) הָאֹב֣וֹת (the mediums), וְאֶת־ (and) הַ֠יִּדְּעֹנִים (the spiritists), וְאֶת־ (and) הַתְּרָפִ֨ים (the teraphim), וְאֶת־ (and) הַגִּלֻּלִ֜ים (the idols), וְאֵ֣ת (and) כָּל־ (all) הַשִּׁקֻּצִ֗ים (the abominations) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) נִרְאוּ֙ (were seen) בְּאֶ֤רֶץ (in the land) יְהוּדָה֙ (of Judah) וּבִיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם (and in Jerusalem), בִּעֵ֖ר (put away) יֹֽאשִׁיָּ֑הוּ (Josiah) לְ֠מַעַן (that) הָקִ֞ים (he would cause to stand) אֶת־ (-) דִּבְרֵ֤י (the words) הַתּוֹרָה֙ (of the law) הַכְּתֻבִ֣ים (written) עַל־ (in) הַסֵּ֔פֶר (the book) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) מָצָ֛א (found) חִלְקִיָּ֥הוּ (Hilkiah) הַכֹּהֵ֖ן (the priest) בֵּ֥ית (in the house) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).

25  וְכָמֹהוּ֩ (And like him) לֹֽא־ (none) הָיָ֨ה (there was) לְפָנָ֜יו (before his face), מֶ֗לֶךְ (a king) אֲשֶׁר־ (who) שָׁ֤ב (turned) אֶל־ (to) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) בְּכָל־ (with all) לְבָב֤וֹ (his heart), וּבְכָל־ (and with all) נַפְשׁוֹ֙ (his soul), וּבְכָל־ (and with all) מְאֹד֔וֹ (his might), כְּכֹ֖ל (according to all) תּוֹרַ֣ת (the Law) מֹשֶׁ֑ה (of Moses)— וְאַחֲרָ֖יו (and after him) לֹֽא־ (not one) קָ֥ם (has arisen) כָּמֹֽהוּ׃ (like him).

26  אַ֣ךְ׀ (Nevertheless) לֹֽא־ (not) שָׁ֣ב (did turn away) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH) מֵחֲר֤וֹן (from the burning) אַפּוֹ֙ (of His wrath) הַגָּד֔וֹל (great), אֲשֶׁר־ (with which) חָרָ֥ה (was kindled) אַפּ֖וֹ (His anger) בִּֽיהוּדָ֑ה (against Judah), עַ֚ל (because) כָּל־ (of all) הַכְּעָסִ֔ים (the provocations) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (with which) הִכְעִיס֖וֹ (had provoked Him) מְנַשֶּֽׁה׃ (Manasseh). 27  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH), גַּ֤ם (Also) אֶת־ (-) יְהוּדָה֙ (Judah) אָסִיר֙ (I will remove) מֵעַ֣ל (from) פָּנַ֔י (My sight) כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) הֲסִרֹ֖תִי (I have removed) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (Israel), וּ֠מָאַסְתִּי (and I will cast off) אֶת־ (-) הָעִ֨יר (the city) הַזֹּ֤את (this) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) בָּחַ֙רְתִּי֙ (I have chosen), אֶת־ (-) יְר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם (Jerusalem), וְאֶת־ (and) הַבַּ֔יִת (the house) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (of which) אָמַ֔רְתִּי (I said), יִהְיֶ֥ה (Shall be) שְׁמִ֖י (My Name) שָֽׁם׃ (there).

28  וְיֶ֛תֶר (And the rest) דִּבְרֵ֥י (of the acts) יֹאשִׁיָּ֖הוּ (of Josiah), וְכָל־ (and all) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) עָשָׂ֑ה (he did), הֲלֹא־ (are not) הֵ֣ם (they) כְּתוּבִ֗ים (written) עַל־ (in) סֵ֛פֶר (the Book) דִּבְרֵ֥י (of the Words) הַיָּמִ֖ים (of the Days) לְמַלְכֵ֥י (of the Kings) יְהוּדָֽה׃ (of Judah)?

29  בְּיָמָ֡יו (In his days) עָלָה֩ (went) פַרְעֹ֨ה (Pharaoh) נְכֹ֧ה (Neco) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) מִצְרַ֛יִם (of Egypt) עַל־ (on account) מֶ֥לֶךְ (of the king) אַשּׁ֖וּר (of Assyria) עַל־ (to) נְהַר־ (the River) פְּרָ֑ת (Euphrates). וַיֵּ֨לֶךְ (And went) הַמֶּ֤לֶךְ (King) יֹאשִׁיָּ֙הוּ֙ (Josiah) לִקְרָאת֔וֹ (against him). וַיְמִיתֵ֙הוּ֙ (And he killed him) בִּמְגִדּ֔וֹ (at Megiddo) כִּרְאֹת֖וֹ (when he saw) אֹתֽוֹ׃ (him).

30  וַיַּרְכִּבֻ֨הוּ (And moved in a chariot) עֲבָדָ֥יו (his servants) מֵת֙ (his body) מִמְּגִדּ֔וֹ (from Megiddo), וַיְבִאֻ֙הוּ֙ (and they brought him) יְר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם (to Jerusalem), וַֽיִּקְבְּרֻ֖הוּ (and buried him) בִּקְבֻֽרָת֑וֹ (in his own tomb). וַיִּקַּ֣ח (And took) עַם־ (the people) הָאָ֗רֶץ (of the land) אֶת־ (-) יְהֽוֹאָחָז֙ (Jehoahaz) בֶּן־ (son) יֹ֣אשִׁיָּ֔הוּ (of Josiah) וַיִּמְשְׁח֥וּ (and anointed) אֹת֛וֹ (him) וַיַּמְלִ֥יכוּ (and made him king) אֹת֖וֹ (-) תַּ֥חַת (in place) אָבִֽיו׃פ (of his father).

Jehoahaz Succeeds Josiah
(2 Chronicles 36:1–4)

31  בֶּן־ (A son) עֶשְׂרִ֨ים (of twenty) וְשָׁלֹ֤שׁ (and three) שָׁנָה֙ (years) יְהוֹאָחָ֣ז (Jehoahaz was) בְּמָלְכ֔וֹ (in his reigning), וּשְׁלֹשָׁ֣ה (and three) חֳדָשִׁ֔ים (months) מָלַ֖ךְ (he reigned) בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (in Jerusalem). וְשֵׁ֣ם (And the name) אִמּ֔וֹ (of his mother) חֲמוּטַ֥ל (was Hamutal) בַּֽת־ (daughter) יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ (of Jeremiah) מִלִּבְנָֽה׃ (from Libnah). 32  וַיַּ֥עַשׂ (And he did) הָרַ֖ע (evil) בְּעֵינֵ֣י (in the eyes) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH) כְּכֹ֥ל (according to all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) עָשׂ֖וּ (had done) אֲבֹתָֽיו׃ (his fathers).

33  וַיַּאַסְרֵהוּ֩ (And bound him) פַרְעֹ֨ה (Pharaoh) נְכֹ֤ה (Neco) בְרִבְלָה֙ (at Riblah) בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) חֲמָ֔ת (of Hamath), בִּמְלֹךְ (that he might not reign) בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (in Jerusalem). וַיִּתֶּן־ (And he imposed) עֹ֙נֶשׁ֙ (a tribute) עַל־ (on) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the land) מֵאָ֥ה (of a hundred) כִכַּר־ (talents) כֶּ֖סֶף (of silver) וְכִכַּ֥ר (and a talent) זָהָֽב׃ (of gold). 34  וַיַּמְלֵךְ֩ (And made king) פַּרְעֹ֨ה (Pharaoh) נְכֹ֜ה (Neco) אֶת־ (-) אֶלְיָקִ֣ים (Eliakim) בֶּן־ (son) יֹאשִׁיָּ֗הוּ (of Josiah) תַּ֚חַת (in place) יֹאשִׁיָּ֣הוּ (of Josiah) אָבִ֔יו (his father), וַיַּסֵּ֥ב (and he turned) אֶת־ (-) שְׁמ֖וֹ (his name) יְהוֹיָקִ֑ים (to Jehoiakim). וְאֶת־ (And) יְהוֹאָחָ֣ז (Jehoahaz) לָקָ֔ח (he took) וַיָּבֹ֥א (and carried him off) מִצְרַ֖יִם (to Egypt), וַיָּ֥מָת (and he died) שָֽׁם׃ (there).

35  וְהַכֶּ֣סֶף (And the silver) וְהַזָּהָ֗ב (and the gold) נָתַ֤ן (gave) יְהוֹיָקִים֙ (Jehoiakim) לְפַרְעֹ֔ה (to Pharaoh), אַ֚ךְ (but) הֶעֱרִ֣יךְ (he taxed) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the land) לָתֵ֥ת (to give) אֶת־ (-) הַכֶּ֖סֶף (the silver) עַל־ (according to) פִּ֣י (the mouth) פַרְעֹ֑ה (of Pharaoh). אִ֣ישׁ (From each man), כְּעֶרְכּ֗וֹ (according to his assessment), נָגַ֞שׂ (he exacted) אֶת־ (-) הַכֶּ֤סֶף (the silver) וְאֶת־ (and) הַזָּהָב֙ (the gold) אֶת־ (-) עַ֣ם (from the people) הָאָ֔רֶץ (of the land), לָתֵ֖ת (to give it) לְפַרְעֹ֥ה (to Pharaoh) נְכֹֽה׃ס (Neco).

Jehoiakim Reigns in Judah
(2 Chronicles 36:5–8)

36  בֶּן־ (A son) עֶשְׂרִ֨ים (of twenty) וְחָמֵ֤שׁ (and five) שָׁנָ֨ה (years) יְהוֹיָקִ֣ים (Jehoiakim was) בְּמָלְכ֔וֹ (in his reigning), וְאַחַ֤ת (and one) עֶשְׂרֵה֙ (and ten) שָׁנָ֔ה (years) מָלַ֖ךְ (he reigned) בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (in Jerusalem). וְשֵׁ֣ם (And the name) אִמּ֔וֹ (of his mother) זְבִידָה (was Zebudah) בַת־ (daughter) פְּדָיָ֖ה (of Pedaiah) מִן־ (from) רוּמָֽה׃ (Rumah). 37  וַיַּ֥עַשׂ (And he did) הָרַ֖ע (evil) בְּעֵינֵ֣י (in the eyes) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), כְּכֹ֥ל (according to all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) עָשׂ֖וּ (had done) אֲבֹתָֽיו׃ (his fathers).
