Deuteronomy 27

The Altar on Mount Ebal
(Joshua 8:30–35)

1  וַיְצַ֤ו (And commanded) מֹשֶׁה֙ (Moses) וְזִקְנֵ֣י (and the elders) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) אֶת־ (-) הָעָ֖ם (the people), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), שָׁמֹר֙ (Keep) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) הַמִּצְוָ֔ה (the commandments) אֲשֶׁ֧ר (that) אָנֹכִ֛י (I) מְצַוֶּ֥ה (command) אֶתְכֶ֖ם (to you⁺) הַיּֽוֹם׃ (today).

2  וְהָיָ֗ה (And it shall come to pass) בַּיּוֹם֮ (on the day) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (when) תַּעַבְר֣וּ (you⁺ pass over) אֶת־ (-) הַיַּרְדֵּן֒ (the Jordan) אֶל־ (to) הָאָ֕רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ (your God) נֹתֵ֣ן (is giving) לָ֑ךְ (to you), וַהֲקֵמֹתָ֤ (that you shall set up) לְךָ֙ (for yourselves) אֲבָנִ֣ים (stones) גְּדֹל֔וֹת (large) וְשַׂדְתָּ֥ (and plaster) אֹתָ֖ם (them) בַּשִּֽׂיד׃ (with plaster). 3  וְכָתַבְתָּ֣ (And you shall write) עֲלֵיהֶ֗ן (on them) אֶֽת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) דִּבְרֵ֛י (the words) הַתּוֹרָ֥ה (of the law) הַזֹּ֖את (this), בְּעָבְרֶ֑ךָ (in your passing over) לְמַ֡עַן (so) אֲשֶׁר֩ (that) תָּבֹ֨א (you may enter) אֶל־ (into) הָאָ֜רֶץ (the land) אֲ‍ֽשֶׁר־ (that) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֣יךָ׀ (your God) נֹתֵ֣ן (is giving) לְךָ֗ (to you), אֶ֣רֶץ (a land) זָבַ֤ת (flowing) חָלָב֙ (with milk) וּדְבַ֔שׁ (and honey), כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) דִּבֶּ֛ר (has spoken) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵֽי־ (God) אֲבֹתֶ֖יךָ (of your fathers) לָֽךְ׃ (to you). 4  וְהָיָה֮ (And it shall come to pass) בְּעָבְרְכֶ֣ם (in your⁺ passing over) אֶת־ (-) הַיַּרְדֵּן֒ (the Jordan) תָּקִ֜ימוּ (that you⁺ shall set up) אֶת־ (-) הָאֲבָנִ֣ים (the stones) הָאֵ֗לֶּה (these), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (which) אָנֹכִ֜י (I) מְצַוֶּ֥ה (command) אֶתְכֶ֛ם (to you⁺) הַיּ֖וֹם (today), בְּהַ֣ר (on Mount) עֵיבָ֑ל (Ebal), וְשַׂדְתָּ֥ (and you shall plaster) אוֹתָ֖ם (them) בַּשִּֽׂיד׃ (with plaster).

5  וּבָנִ֤יתָ (And you shall build) שָּׁם֙ (there) מִזְבֵּ֔חַ (an altar) לַיהוָ֖ה (to YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ (your God), מִזְבַּ֣ח (an altar) אֲבָנִ֔ים (of stones); לֹא־ (not) תָנִ֥יף (shall you wave) עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם (over them) בַּרְזֶֽל׃ (iron). 6  אֲבָנִ֤ים (With stones) שְׁלֵמוֹת֙ (uncut) תִּבְנֶ֔ה (you shall build) אֶת־ (-) מִזְבַּ֖ח (the altar) יְהוָ֣ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ (your God), וְהַעֲלִ֤יתָ (and offer) עָלָיו֙ (on it) עוֹלֹ֔ת (burnt offerings) לַיהוָ֖ה (to YHWH) אֱלֹהֶֽיךָ׃ (your God). 7  וְזָבַחְתָּ֥ (And you shall sacrifice) שְׁלָמִ֖ים (peace offerings), וְאָכַ֣לְתָּ (and you shall eat) שָּׁ֑ם (there) וְשָׂ֣מַחְתָּ֔ (and rejoice) לִפְנֵ֖י (before the face of) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶֽיךָ׃ (your God). 8  וְכָתַבְתָּ֣ (And you shall write) עַל־ (on) הָאֲבָנִ֗ים (the stones) אֶֽת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) דִּבְרֵ֛י (the words) הַתּוֹרָ֥ה (of the law) הַזֹּ֖את (this), בַּאֵ֥ר (making plain) הֵיטֵֽב׃ס (well engraved).

9  וַיְדַבֵּ֤ר (And spoke) מֹשֶׁה֙ (Moses) וְהַכֹּהֲנִ֣ים (and the priests), הַלְוִיִּ֔ם (the Levites), אֶ֥ל (to) כָּל־ (all) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (Israel), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), הַסְכֵּ֤ת׀ (Be silent) וּשְׁמַע֙ (and listen), יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (O Israel), הַיּ֤וֹם (the day) הַזֶּה֙ (this) נִהְיֵ֣יתָֽ (you have become) לְעָ֔ם (the people) לַיהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֶֽיךָ׃ (your God). 10  וְשָׁ֣מַעְתָּ֔ (And you shall obey) בְּק֖וֹל (the voice) יְהוָ֣ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ (your God), וְעָשִׂ֤יתָ (and do) אֶת־ (-) מִצְוֺתָו֙ (His commandments) וְאֶת־ (and) חֻקָּ֔יו (His statutes) אֲשֶׁ֛ר (that) אָנֹכִ֥י (I) מְצַוְּךָ֖ (am commanding you) הַיּֽוֹם׃ס (today).

11  וַיְצַ֤ו (And commanded) מֹשֶׁה֙ (Moses) אֶת־ (-) הָעָ֔ם (the people) בַּיּ֥וֹם (on the day) הַה֖וּא (that), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 12  אֵ֠לֶּה (These) יַֽעַמְד֞וּ (shall stand) לְבָרֵ֤ךְ (to bless) אֶת־ (-) הָעָם֙ (the people) עַל־ (on) הַ֣ר (Mount) גְּרִזִ֔ים (Gerizim) בְּעָבְרְכֶ֖ם (when you⁺ have passed over) אֶת־ (-) הַיַּרְדֵּ֑ן (the Jordan) שִׁמְעוֹן֙ (Simeon), וְלֵוִ֣י (and Levi), וִֽיהוּדָ֔ה (and Judah), וְיִשָּׂשכָ֖ר (and Issachar), וְיוֹסֵ֥ף (and Joseph), וּבִנְיָמִֽן׃ (and Benjamin). 13  וְאֵ֛לֶּה (And these) יַֽעַמְד֥וּ (shall stand) עַל־ (to) הַקְּלָלָ֖ה (curse) בְּהַ֣ר (on Mount) עֵיבָ֑ל (Ebal): רְאוּבֵן֙ (Reuben), גָּ֣ד (Gad), וְאָשֵׁ֔ר (and Asher), וּזְבוּלֻ֖ן (and Zebulun), דָּ֥ן (Dan), וְנַפְתָּלִֽי׃ (and Naphtali).

14  וְעָנ֣וּ (And shall speak) הַלְוִיִּ֗ם (the Levites) וְאָֽמְר֛וּ (and say) אֶל־ (to) כָּל־ (every) אִ֥ישׁ (man) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) ק֥וֹל (in a voice) רָֽם׃ס (loud):

15  אָר֣וּר (Cursed is) הָאִ֡ישׁ (the man) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who) יַעֲשֶׂה֩ (makes) פֶ֨סֶל (a carved) וּמַסֵּכָ֜ה (or molten image), תּוֹעֲבַ֣ת (an abomination to) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH), מַעֲשֵׂ֛ה (the work) יְדֵ֥י (of the hands) חָרָ֖שׁ (of the craftsman), וְשָׂ֣ם (and sets it up) בַּסָּ֑תֶר (in secret).

וְעָנ֧וּ (And shall answer) כָל־ (all) הָעָ֛ם (the people) וְאָמְר֖וּ (and say), אָמֵֽן׃ס (Amen).

16  אָר֕וּר (Cursed is) מַקְלֶ֥ה (he who dishonors) אָבִ֖יו (his father) וְאִמּ֑וֹ (or his mother).

וְאָמַ֥ר (And shall say) כָּל־ (all) הָעָ֖ם (the people), אָמֵֽן׃ס (Amen).

17  אָר֕וּר (Cursed is) מַסִּ֖יג (he who moves) גְּב֣וּל (a border) רֵעֵ֑הוּ (of his neighbor).

וְאָמַ֥ר (And shall say) כָּל־ (all) הָעָ֖ם (the people), אָמֵֽן׃ס (Amen).

18  אָר֕וּר (Cursed is) מַשְׁגֶּ֥ה (he who causes to err) עִוֵּ֖ר (a blind man) בַּדָּ֑רֶךְ (in the road).

וְאָמַ֥ר (And shall say) כָּל־ (all) הָעָ֖ם (the people), אָמֵֽן׃ס (Amen).

19  אָר֗וּר (Cursed is) מַטֶּ֛ה (he who withholds) מִשְׁפַּ֥ט (justice) גֵּר־ (the sojourner), יָת֖וֹם (the fatherless), וְאַלְמָנָ֑ה (and the widow).

וְאָמַ֥ר (And shall say) כָּל־ (all) הָעָ֖ם (the people), אָמֵֽן׃ס (Amen).

20  אָר֗וּר (Cursed is) שֹׁכֵב֙ (he who lies) עִם־ (with) אֵ֣שֶׁת (the wife) אָבִ֔יו (of his father), כִּ֥י (because) גִלָּ֖ה (he has uncovered) כְּנַ֣ף (the skirt) אָבִ֑יו (of his father).

וְאָמַ֥ר (And shall say) כָּל־ (all) הָעָ֖ם (the people), אָמֵֽן׃ס (Amen).

21  אָר֕וּר (Cursed is) שֹׁכֵ֖ב (he who lies) עִם־ (with) כָּל־ (any kind) בְּהֵמָ֑ה (of animal).

וְאָמַ֥ר (And shall say) כָּל־ (all) הָעָ֖ם (the people), אָמֵֽן׃ס (Amen).

22  אָר֗וּר (Cursed is) שֹׁכֵב֙ (he who lies) עִם־ (with) אֲחֹת֔וֹ (his sister), בַּת־ (the daughter) אָבִ֖יו (of his father), א֣וֹ (or) בַת־ (the daughter) אִמּ֑וֹ (of his mother).

וְאָמַ֥ר (And shall say) כָּל־ (all) הָעָ֖ם (the people), אָמֵֽן׃ס (Amen).

23  אָר֕וּר (Cursed is) שֹׁכֵ֖ב (he who lies) עִם־ (with) חֹֽתַנְתּ֑וֹ (his mother-in-law).

וְאָמַ֥ר (And shall say) כָּל־ (all) הָעָ֖ם (the people), אָמֵֽן׃ס (Amen).

24  אָר֕וּר (Cursed is) מַכֵּ֥ה (he who strikes down) רֵעֵ֖הוּ (his neighbor) בַּסָּ֑תֶר (in secret).

וְאָמַ֥ר (And shall say) כָּל־ (all) הָעָ֖ם (the people), אָמֵֽן׃ס (Amen).

25  אָרוּר֙ (Cursed is) לֹקֵ֣חַ (he who takes) שֹׁ֔חַד (a bribe) לְהַכּ֥וֹת (to slay) נֶ֖פֶשׁ (a soul) דָּ֣ם (of blood) נָקִ֑י (innocent).

וְאָמַ֥ר (And shall say) כָּל־ (all) הָעָ֖ם (the people), אָמֵֽן׃ס (Amen).

26  אָר֗וּר (Cursed is) אֲשֶׁ֧ר (he who) לֹא־ (not) יָקִ֛ים (does confirm) אֶת־ (-) דִּבְרֵ֥י (the words) הַתּוֹרָֽה־ (of the law) הַזֹּ֖את (this) לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת (by doing) אוֹתָ֑ם (it).

וְאָמַ֥ר (And shall say) כָּל־ (all) הָעָ֖ם (the people), אָמֵֽן׃פ (Amen).
