Joseph’s Dreams

1  וַיֵּ֣שֶׁב (And dwelt) יַעֲקֹ֔ב (Jacob) בְּאֶ֖רֶץ (in the land) מְגוּרֵ֣י (of the sojournings) אָבִ֑יו (of his father), בְּאֶ֖רֶץ (in the land) כְּנָֽעַן׃ (of Canaan).

2  אֵ֣לֶּה׀ (These are) תֹּלְד֣וֹת (the generations) יַעֲקֹ֗ב (of Jacob): יוֹסֵ֞ף (Joseph), בֶּן־ (a son) שְׁבַֽע־ (of seven) עֶשְׂרֵ֤ה (and ten) שָׁנָה֙ (years), הָיָ֨ה (was) רֹעֶ֤ה (shepherding) אֶת־ (with) אֶחָיו֙ (his brothers) בַּצֹּ֔אן (the flock); וְה֣וּא (and was) נַ֗עַר (the boy) אֶת־ (with) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) בִלְהָ֛ה (of Bilhah) וְאֶת־ (and) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) זִלְפָּ֖ה (of Zilpah), נְשֵׁ֣י (wives) אָבִ֑יו (of his father). וַיָּבֵ֥א (And brought) יוֹסֵ֛ף (Joseph) אֶת־ (-) דִּבָּתָ֥ם (a report of them) רָעָ֖ה (evil) אֶל־ (to) אֲבִיהֶֽם׃ (his father).

3  וְיִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (And Israel) אָהַ֤ב (loved) אֶת־ (-) יוֹסֵף֙ (Joseph) מִכָּל־ (more than all) בָּנָ֔יו (his sons), כִּֽי־ (because) בֶן־ (son) זְקֻנִ֥ים (of old age) ה֖וּא (he was) ל֑וֹ (unto him); וְעָ֥שָׂה (and he made) ל֖וֹ (him) כְּתֹ֥נֶת (tunic) פַּסִּֽים׃ (a long sleeved). 4  וַיִּרְא֣וּ (And saw) אֶחָ֗יו (his brothers) כִּֽי־ (that) אֹת֞וֹ (him) אָהַ֤ב (loved) אֲבִיהֶם֙ (their father) מִכָּל־ (more than all) אֶחָ֔יו (his brothers), וַֽיִּשְׂנְא֖וּ (and they hated) אֹת֑וֹ (him) וְלֹ֥א (and not) יָכְל֖וּ (able) דַּבְּר֥וֹ (speak to him) לְשָׁלֹֽם׃ (peaceably).

5  וַיַּחֲלֹ֤ם (And dreamed) יוֹסֵף֙ (Joseph) חֲל֔וֹם (a dream), וַיַּגֵּ֖ד (and he told it) לְאֶחָ֑יו (to his brothers). וַיּוֹסִ֥פוּ (And they continued) ע֖וֹד (even more) שְׂנֹ֥א (hating) אֹתֽוֹ׃ (him). 6  וַיֹּ֖אמֶר (And he said) אֲלֵיהֶ֑ם (to them) שִׁמְעוּ־ (Hear), נָ֕א (please), הַחֲל֥וֹם (the dream) הַזֶּ֖ה (this) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) חָלָֽמְתִּי׃ (I have dreamed). 7  וְ֠הִנֵּה (And behold), אֲנַ֜חְנוּ (we) מְאַלְּמִ֤ים (were binding) אֲלֻמִּים֙ (sheaves) בְּת֣וֹךְ (in the midst of) הַשָּׂדֶ֔ה (the field), וְהִנֵּ֛ה (and behold), קָ֥מָה (arose) אֲלֻמָּתִ֖י (my sheaf) וְגַם־ (and) נִצָּ֑בָה (stood upright); וְהִנֵּ֤ה (and behold), תְסֻבֶּ֙ינָה֙ (gathered around) אֲלֻמֹּ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ sheaves) וַתִּֽשְׁתַּחֲוֶ֖יןָ (and bowed themselves) לַאֲלֻמָּתִֽי׃ (to my sheaf).

8  וַיֹּ֤אמְרוּ (And said) לוֹ֙ (to him) אֶחָ֔יו (his brothers), הֲמָלֹ֤ךְ (Reigning) תִּמְלֹךְ֙ (will you reign) עָלֵ֔ינוּ (over us)? אִם־ (Or) מָשׁ֥וֹל (ruling) תִּמְשֹׁ֖ל (will you rule) בָּ֑נוּ (over us)? וַיּוֹסִ֤פוּ (And they continued) עוֹד֙ (even more) שְׂנֹ֣א (hating) אֹת֔וֹ (him) עַל־ (for) חֲלֹמֹתָ֖יו (his dreams) וְעַל־ (and for) דְּבָרָֽיו׃ (his words).

9  וַיַּחֲלֹ֥ם (And he dreamed) עוֹד֙ (yet) חֲל֣וֹם (dream) אַחֵ֔ר (another), וַיְסַפֵּ֥ר (and he told) אֹת֖וֹ (it) לְאֶחָ֑יו (to his brothers), וַיֹּ֗אמֶר (and said), הִנֵּ֨ה (Behold), חָלַ֤מְתִּֽי (I have dreamed) חֲלוֹם֙ (dream) ע֔וֹד (another); וְהִנֵּ֧ה (and behold), הַשֶּׁ֣מֶשׁ (the sun) וְהַיָּרֵ֗חַ (and the moon) וְאַחַ֤ד (and one) עָשָׂר֙ (and ten) כּֽוֹכָבִ֔ים (stars) מִֽשְׁתַּחֲוִ֖ים (were bowing themselves) לִֽי׃ (to me).

10  וַיְסַפֵּ֣ר (And he told it) אֶל־ (to) אָבִיו֮ (his father) וְאֶל־ (and to) אֶחָיו֒ (his brothers). וַיִּגְעַר־ (And rebuked) בּ֣וֹ (him) אָבִ֔יו (his father) וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and said) ל֔וֹ (to him), מָ֛ה (What is) הַחֲל֥וֹם (the dream) הַזֶּ֖ה (this) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) חָלָ֑מְתָּ (you have dreamed)? הֲב֣וֹא (Coming) נָב֗וֹא (will we come)— אֲנִי֙ (I) וְאִמְּךָ֣ (and your mother) וְאַחֶ֔יךָ (and your brothers)— לְהִשְׁתַּחֲוֺ֥ת (to bow down) לְךָ֖ (before you) אָֽרְצָה׃ (to the earth)? 11  וַיְקַנְאוּ־ (And envied) ב֖וֹ (him) אֶחָ֑יו (his brothers), וְאָבִ֖יו (and his father) שָׁמַ֥ר (kept) אֶת־ (-) הַדָּבָֽר׃ (the matter in mind).

Joseph Sold into Egypt
(Acts 7:9–14)

12  וַיֵּלְכ֖וּ (And went) אֶחָ֑יו (his brothers) לִרְע֛וֹת (to shepherd) אֶׄתׄ־ (-) צֹ֥אן (the flock) אֲבִיהֶ֖ם (of their father) בִּשְׁכֶֽם׃ (in Shechem). 13  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל (Israel) אֶל־ (to) יוֹסֵ֗ף (Joseph), הֲל֤וֹא (Are not) אַחֶ֙יךָ֙ (your brothers) רֹעִ֣ים (shepherding) בִּשְׁכֶ֔ם (in Shechem)? לְכָ֖ה (Come), וְאֶשְׁלָחֲךָ֣ (and I will send you) אֲלֵיהֶ֑ם (to them).

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And he said) ל֖וֹ (to him), הִנֵּֽנִי׃ (Behold, it is I).

14  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And he said) ל֗וֹ (to him) לֶךְ־ (Go), נָ֨א (please), רְאֵ֜ה (and see) אֶת־ (-) שְׁל֤וֹם (the welfare) אַחֶ֙יךָ֙ (of your brothers), וְאֶת־ (and) שְׁל֣וֹם (the welfare) הַצֹּ֔אן (of the flock); וַהֲשִׁבֵ֖נִי (and bring back to me) דָּבָ֑ר (word).

וַיִּשְׁלָחֵ֙הוּ֙ (And he sent him) מֵעֵ֣מֶק (from the Valley) חֶבְר֔וֹן (of Hebron), וַיָּבֹ֖א (and he went) שְׁכֶֽמָה׃ (to Shechem). 15  וַיִּמְצָאֵ֣הוּ (And found him) אִ֔ישׁ (a man), וְהִנֵּ֥ה (and behold), תֹעֶ֖ה (he was wandering) בַּשָּׂדֶ֑ה (in the field); וַיִּשְׁאָלֵ֧הוּ (and asked him) הָאִ֛ישׁ (the man), לֵאמֹ֖ר (saying), מַה־ (What are) תְּבַקֵּֽשׁ׃ (you seeking)?

16  וַיֹּ֕אמֶר (And he said), אֶת־ (-) אַחַ֖י (My brothers) אָנֹכִ֣י (I) מְבַקֵּ֑שׁ (am seeking). הַגִּֽידָה־ (Tell), נָּ֣א (please) לִ֔י (to me), אֵיפֹ֖ה (where) הֵ֥ם (they) רֹעִֽים׃ (are shepherding)?

17  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) הָאִישׁ֙ (the man), נָסְע֣וּ (They have journeyed) מִזֶּ֔ה (from this place). כִּ֤י (For) שָׁמַ֙עְתִּי֙ (I heard) אֹֽמְרִ֔ים (them say), נֵלְכָ֖ה (Let us go) דֹּתָ֑יְנָה (to Dothan). וַיֵּ֤לֶךְ (And went) יוֹסֵף֙ (Joseph) אַחַ֣ר (after) אֶחָ֔יו (his brothers), וַיִּמְצָאֵ֖ם (and he found them) בְּדֹתָֽן׃ (in Dothan).

18  וַיִּרְא֥וּ (And they saw) אֹת֖וֹ (him) מֵרָחֹ֑ק (from a distance), וּבְטֶ֙רֶם֙ (and before) יִקְרַ֣ב (he came near) אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם (to them), וַיִּֽתְנַכְּל֥וּ (and they conspired against) אֹת֖וֹ (him) לַהֲמִיתֽוֹ׃ (to kill him). 19  וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ (And they said) אִ֣ישׁ (each man) אֶל־ (to) אָחִ֑יו (his brother), הִנֵּ֗ה (Behold), בַּ֛עַל (master) הַחֲלֹמ֥וֹת (of dreams) הַלָּזֶ֖ה (this) בָּֽא׃ (is coming)! 20  וְעַתָּ֣ה׀ (And now) לְכ֣וּ (come) וְנַֽהַרְגֵ֗הוּ (and let us kill him) וְנַשְׁלִכֵ֙הוּ֙ (and cast him) בְּאַחַ֣ד (into one) הַבֹּר֔וֹת (of the pits), וְאָמַ֕רְנוּ (and we will say) חַיָּ֥ה (a beast) רָעָ֖ה (evil) אֲכָלָ֑תְהוּ (has devoured him). וְנִרְאֶ֕ה (And we will see) מַה־ (what) יִּהְי֖וּ (will become) חֲלֹמֹתָֽיו׃ (of his dreams).

21  וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע (And heard) רְאוּבֵ֔ן (Reuben), וַיַּצִּלֵ֖הוּ (and he delivered him) מִיָּדָ֑ם (out of their hand) וַיֹּ֕אמֶר (and said), לֹ֥א (Not) נַכֶּ֖נּוּ (let us take) נָֽפֶשׁ׃ (his life). 22  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) אֲלֵהֶ֣ם׀ (to them) רְאוּבֵן֮ (Reuben), אַל־ (Not) תִּשְׁפְּכוּ־ (do shed) דָם֒ (blood), הַשְׁלִ֣יכוּ (cast) אֹת֗וֹ (him) אֶל־ (into) הַבּ֤וֹר (the pit) הַזֶּה֙ (this) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (which is) בַּמִּדְבָּ֔ר (in the wilderness). וְיָ֖ד (And a hand) אַל־ (not) תִּשְׁלְחוּ־ (stretch out) ב֑וֹ (against him), לְמַ֗עַן (that) הַצִּ֤יל (he might deliver) אֹתוֹ֙ (him) מִיָּדָ֔ם (out of their hand), לַהֲשִׁיב֖וֹ (to return him) אֶל־ (to) אָבִֽיו׃ (his father).

23  וַֽיְהִ֕י (And it came to pass), כַּֽאֲשֶׁר־ (when) בָּ֥א (came) יוֹסֵ֖ף (Joseph) אֶל־ (to) אֶחָ֑יו (his brothers), וַיַּפְשִׁ֤יטוּ (that they stripped) אֶת־ (-) יוֹסֵף֙ (Joseph) אֶת־ (-) כֻּתָּנְתּ֔וֹ (of his tunic), אֶת־ (-) כְּתֹ֥נֶת (tunic) הַפַּסִּ֖ים (the long sleeved) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that was) עָלָֽיו׃ (on him). 24  וַיִּ֨קָּחֻ֔הוּ (And they took him) וַיַּשְׁלִ֥כוּ (and cast) אֹת֖וֹ (him) הַבֹּ֑רָה (into the pit). וְהַבּ֣וֹר (And the pit) רֵ֔ק (was empty), אֵ֥ין (there was no) בּ֖וֹ (in it) מָֽיִם׃ (water).

25  וַיֵּשְׁבוּ֮ (And they sat down) לֶֽאֱכָל־ (to eat) לֶחֶם֒ (bread). וַיִּשְׂא֤וּ (And they lifted) עֵֽינֵיהֶם֙ (their eyes) וַיִּרְא֔וּ (and they saw), וְהִנֵּה֙ (and behold), אֹרְחַ֣ת (a caravan) יִשְׁמְעֵאלִ֔ים (of Ishmaelites) בָּאָ֖ה (was coming) מִגִּלְעָ֑ד (from Gilead). וּגְמַלֵּיהֶ֣ם (And their camels) נֹֽשְׂאִ֗ים (were bearing) נְכֹאת֙ (spices) וּצְרִ֣י (and balm) וָלֹ֔ט (and myrrh), הוֹלְכִ֖ים (going) לְהוֹרִ֥יד (to bring them down) מִצְרָֽיְמָה׃ (to Egypt).

26  וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And said) יְהוּדָ֖ה (Judah) אֶל־ (to) אֶחָ֑יו (his brothers), מַה־ (What) בֶּ֗צַע (profit is it) כִּ֤י (if) נַהֲרֹג֙ (we kill) אֶת־ (-) אָחִ֔ינוּ (our brother) וְכִסִּ֖ינוּ (and cover up) אֶת־ (-) דָּמֽוֹ׃ (his blood)? 27  לְכ֞וּ (Come) וְנִמְכְּרֶ֣נּוּ (and let us sell him) לַיִּשְׁמְעֵאלִ֗ים (to the Ishmaelites), וְיָדֵ֙נוּ֙ (and let our hand) אַל־ (not) תְּהִי־ (let be) ב֔וֹ (upon him), כִּֽי־ (for) אָחִ֥ינוּ (our brother) בְשָׂרֵ֖נוּ (our flesh) ה֑וּא (he is). וַֽיִּשְׁמְע֖וּ (And listened) אֶחָֽיו׃ (his brothers). 28  וַיַּֽעַבְרוּ֩ (And passed by) אֲנָשִׁ֨ים (men) מִדְיָנִ֜ים (Midianite), סֹֽחֲרִ֗ים (traders). וַֽיִּמְשְׁכוּ֙ (And they pulled up) וַיַּֽעֲל֤וּ (and lifted up) אֶת־ (-) יוֹסֵף֙ (Joseph) מִן־ (out) הַבּ֔וֹר (of the pit), וַיִּמְכְּר֧וּ (and sold) אֶת־ (-) יוֹסֵ֛ף (Joseph) לַיִּשְׁמְעֵאלִ֖ים (to the Ishmaelites) בְּעֶשְׂרִ֣ים (for twenty shekels) כָּ֑סֶף (of silver). וַיָּבִ֥יאוּ (And they brought) אֶת־ (-) יוֹסֵ֖ף (Joseph) מִצְרָֽיְמָה׃ (to Egypt).

29  וַיָּ֤שָׁב (And returned) רְאוּבֵן֙ (Reuben) אֶל־ (to) הַבּ֔וֹר (the pit); וְהִנֵּ֥ה (and behold), אֵין־ (not) יוֹסֵ֖ף (Joseph was) בַּבּ֑וֹר (in the pit), וַיִּקְרַ֖ע (and he tore) אֶת־ (-) בְּגָדָֽיו׃ (his clothes). 30  וַיָּ֥שָׁב (And he returned) אֶל־ (to) אֶחָ֖יו (his brothers) וַיֹּאמַ֑ר (and said), הַיֶּ֣לֶד (The boy is) אֵינֶ֔נּוּ (not), וַאֲנִ֖י (and I), אָ֥נָה (where) אֲנִי־ (I) בָֽא׃ (am going)?

Jacob Mourns Joseph

31  וַיִּקְח֖וּ (And they took) אֶת־ (-) כְּתֹ֣נֶת (the tunic) יוֹסֵ֑ף (of Joseph), וַֽיִּשְׁחֲטוּ֙ (and they slaughtered) שְׂעִ֣יר (a kid) עִזִּ֔ים (of the goats), וַיִּטְבְּל֥וּ (and they dipped) אֶת־ (-) הַכֻּתֹּ֖נֶת (the tunic) בַּדָּֽם׃ (in the blood). 32  וַֽיְשַׁלְּח֞וּ (And they sent) אֶת־ (-) כְּתֹ֣נֶת (tunic) הַפַּסִּ֗ים (the long sleeved), וַיָּבִ֙יאוּ֙ (and they brought it) אֶל־ (to) אֲבִיהֶ֔ם (their father) וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ (and said), זֹ֣את (This) מָצָ֑אנוּ (we have found). הַכֶּר־ (Recognize) נָ֗א (please) הַכְּתֹ֧נֶת (the tunic) בִּנְךָ֛ (of your son) הִ֖וא (is it) אִם־ (or) לֹֽא׃ (not).

33  וַיַּכִּירָ֤הּ (And he recognized it) וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (and said), כְּתֹ֣נֶת (Tunic) בְּנִ֔י (of my son)! חַיָּ֥ה (A beast) רָעָ֖ה (evil) אֲכָלָ֑תְהוּ (has devoured him)! טָרֹ֥ף (Being torn) טֹרַ֖ף (has been torn to pieces) יוֹסֵֽף׃ (Joseph)! 34  וַיִּקְרַ֤ע (And tore) יַעֲקֹב֙ (Jacob) שִׂמְלֹתָ֔יו (his clothes), וַיָּ֥שֶׂם (and put) שַׂ֖ק (sackcloth) בְּמָתְנָ֑יו (on his waist), וַיִּתְאַבֵּ֥ל (and he mourned) עַל־ (for) בְּנ֖וֹ (his son) יָמִ֥ים (days) רַבִּֽים׃ (many). 35  וַיָּקֻמוּ֩ (And arose) כָל־ (all) בָּנָ֨יו (his sons) וְכָל־ (and all) בְּנֹתָ֜יו (his daughters) לְנַחֲמ֗וֹ (to comfort him), וַיְמָאֵן֙ (and he refused) לְהִתְנַחֵ֔ם (to be comforted). וַיֹּ֕אמֶר (And he said), כִּֽי־ (For) אֵרֵ֧ד (I shall go down) אֶל־ (to) בְּנִ֛י (my son) אָבֵ֖ל (mourning) שְׁאֹ֑לָה (to Sheol). וַיֵּ֥בְךְּ (And wept) אֹת֖וֹ (for him) אָבִֽיו׃ (his father).

36  וְהַ֨מְּדָנִ֔ים (And the Midianites) מָכְר֥וּ (sold) אֹת֖וֹ (him) אֶל־ (into) מִצְרָ֑יִם (Egypt) לְפֽוֹטִיפַר֙ (to Potiphar), סְרִ֣יס (an officer) פַּרְעֹ֔ה (of Pharaoh) שַׂ֖ר (and captain) הַטַּבָּחִֽים׃פ (of the guards).
