The Army of Locusts
(Amos 7:1–9)

1  תִּקְע֨וּ (Blow) שׁוֹפָ֜ר (the shofar) בְּצִיּ֗וֹן (in Zion),

וְהָרִ֙יעוּ֙ (and give a shout) בְּהַ֣ר (on the mountain)! קָדְשִׁ֔י (Of My holiness)

יִרְגְּז֕וּ (let tremble), כֹּ֖ל (all) יֹשְׁבֵ֣י (those dwelling) הָאָ֑רֶץ (in the land)

כִּֽי־ (for) בָ֥א (is coming), יוֹם־ (the day) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH)

כִּ֥י (indeed) קָרֽוֹב׃ (it is near);

2  י֧וֹם (a day) חֹ֣שֶׁךְ (of darkness) וַאֲפֵלָ֗ה (and gloom),

י֤וֹם (a day) עָנָן֙ (of clouds) וַעֲרָפֶ֔ל (and thick darkness),

כְּשַׁ֖חַר (like dawn) פָּרֻ֣שׂ (spreading) עַל־ (over) הֶֽהָרִ֑ים (the mountains),

עַ֚ם (a people) רַ֣ב (great) וְעָצ֔וּם (and strong);

כָּמֹ֗הוּ (the like), לֹ֤א (not) נִֽהְיָה֙ (has there been) מִן־ (from) הָ֣עוֹלָ֔ם (of old)

וְאַֽחֲרָיו֙ (and after them) לֹ֣א (not) יוֹסֵ֔ף (will be again) עַד־ (even to) שְׁנֵ֖י (years) דּ֥וֹר (of generation) וָדֽוֹר׃ (and generation).

3  לְפָנָיו֙ (Before its face) אָ֣כְלָה (devours) אֵ֔שׁ (a fire)

וְאַחֲרָ֖יו (and behind them) תְּלַהֵ֣ט (burns). לֶֽהָבָ֑ה (A flame)

כְּגַן־ (like the garden) עֵ֨דֶן (of Eden) הָאָ֜רֶץ (is the land) לְפָנָ֗יו (before its face)

וְאַֽחֲרָיו֙ (and behind it) מִדְבַּ֣ר (a wilderness); שְׁמָמָ֔ה (of desolation)

וְגַם־ (and surely), פְּלֵיטָ֖ה (escape) לֹא־ (nothing) הָ֥יְתָה (shall) לּֽוֹ׃ (from them).

4  כְּמַרְאֵ֥ה (Like the appearance) סוּסִ֖ים (of horses); מַרְאֵ֑הוּ (is its appearance)

וּכְפָרָשִׁ֖ים (and like steeds), כֵּ֥ן (so) יְרוּצֽוּן׃ (they run).

5  כְּק֣וֹל (As with the sound) מַרְכָּב֗וֹת (of chariots)

עַל־ (over) רָאשֵׁ֤י (the tops) הֶֽהָרִים֙ (of mountains) יְרַקֵּד֔וּן (they leap),

כְּקוֹל֙ (like the sound) לַ֣הַב (of a fire) אֵ֔שׁ (flaming) אֹכְלָ֖ה (devouring) קָ֑שׁ (the stubble),

כְּעַ֣ם (like a people) עָצ֔וּם (strong) עֱר֖וּךְ (arrayed for) מִלְחָמָֽה׃ (battle).

6  מִפָּנָ֖יו (Before its face) יָחִ֣ילוּ (writhe); עַמִּ֑ים (the peoples)

כָּל־ (all) פָּנִ֖ים (faces) קִבְּצ֥וּ (gather) פָארֽוּר׃ (paleness).

7  כְּגִבּוֹרִ֣ים (Like mighty men); יְרֻצ֔וּן (they run)

כְּאַנְשֵׁ֥י (like men) מִלְחָמָ֖ה (of war); יַעֲל֣וּ (they climb) חוֹמָ֑ה (the wall)

וְאִ֤ישׁ (and a man) בִּדְרָכָיו֙ (in his ways), יֵֽלֵכ֔וּן (marches)

וְלֹ֥א (and not) יְעַבְּט֖וּן (do they swerve) אֹרְחוֹתָֽם׃ (from their paths).

8  וְאִ֤ישׁ (And each man) אָחִיו֙ (his brother); לֹ֣א (not) יִדְחָק֔וּן (jostle)

גֶּ֥בֶר (each man) בִּמְסִלָּת֖וֹ (in his path); יֵֽלֵכ֑וּן (marches)

וּבְעַ֥ד (between) הַשֶּׁ֛לַח (the weapon), יִפֹּ֖לוּ (they lunge)

לֹ֥א (not) יִבְצָֽעוּ׃ (are they cut down).

9  בָּעִ֣יר (Into the city); יָשֹׁ֗קּוּ (they rush)

בַּֽחוֹמָה֙ (on the wall), יְרֻצ֔וּן (they run)

בַּבָּתִּ֖ים (into the houses); יַעֲל֑וּ (they come up)

בְּעַ֧ד (and at) הַחַלּוֹנִ֛ים (the windows) יָבֹ֖אוּ (they come in) כַּגַּנָּֽב׃ (like a thief).

10  לְפָנָיו֙ (Before their faces) רָ֣גְזָה (quakes) אֶ֔רֶץ (the earth)

רָעֲשׁ֖וּ (quake), שָׁמָ֑יִם (the heavens)

שֶׁ֤מֶשׁ (the sun) וְיָרֵ֙חַ֙ (and moon) קָדָ֔רוּ (grow dark),

וְכוֹכָבִ֖ים (and the stars) אָסְפ֥וּ (withdraw) נָגְהָֽם׃ (their brightness).

11  וַֽיהוָ֗ה (And YHWH) נָתַ֤ן (gives forth) קוֹלוֹ֙ (His voice)

לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face) חֵיל֔וֹ (of His army)

כִּ֣י (for) רַ֤ב (large), מְאֹד֙ (exceedingly) מַחֲנֵ֔הוּ (is His camp)

כִּ֥י (for) עָצ֖וּם (strong is) עֹשֵׂ֣ה (the One doing) דְבָר֑וֹ (His word).

כִּֽי־ (For) גָד֧וֹל (great is) יוֹם־ (the day) יְהוָ֛ה (of YHWH) וְנוֹרָ֥א (and fearsome); מְאֹ֖ד (very)

וּמִ֥י (and who) יְכִילֶֽנּוּ׃ (can endure it).

Return with All Your Heart

12  וְגַם־ (Even) עַתָּה֙ (now),

נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH),

שֻׁ֥בוּ (May you turn) עָדַ֖י (to Me) בְּכָל־ (with all) לְבַבְכֶ֑ם (your⁺ heart),

וּבְצ֥וֹם (and with fasting), וּבְבְכִ֖י (and with weeping), וּבְמִסְפֵּֽד׃ (and with mourning);

13  וְקִרְע֤וּ (and rend) לְבַבְכֶם֙ (your⁺ heart), וְאַל־ (and not) בִּגְדֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ garments),

וְשׁ֖וּבוּ (and may you return) אֶל־ (to) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֑ם (your⁺ God),

כִּֽי־ (for) חַנּ֤וּן (gracious) וְרַחוּם֙ (and compassionate), ה֔וּא (He is)

אֶ֤רֶךְ (slow to) אַפַּ֙יִם֙ (anger), וְרַב־ (and great) חֶ֔סֶד (in loving devotion),

וְנִחָ֖ם (and relenting) עַל־ (from) הָרָעָֽה׃ (harm).

14  מִ֥י (Who) יוֹדֵ֖עַ (knows) יָשׁ֣וּב (if He will turn) וְנִחָ֑ם (and relent),

וְהִשְׁאִ֤יר (and will leave) אַֽחֲרָיו֙ (behind Him) בְּרָכָ֔ה (a blessing)

מִנְחָ֣ה (a grain offering) וָנֶ֔סֶךְ (and a drink offering)

לַיהוָ֖ה (for YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃פ (your⁺ God)?

15  תִּקְע֥וּ (Blow) שׁוֹפָ֖ר (the shofar) בְּצִיּ֑וֹן (in Zion),

קַדְּשׁוּ־ (Consecrate) צ֖וֹם (a fast),

קִרְא֥וּ (call) עֲצָרָֽה׃ (a solemn assembly);

16  אִסְפוּ־ (Gather) עָ֞ם (the people), קַדְּשׁ֤וּ (sanctify) קָהָל֙ (the congregation),

קִבְצ֣וּ (assemble) זְקֵנִ֔ים (the elders), אִסְפוּ֙ (gather) עֽוֹלָלִ֔ים (the infants),

וְיֹנְקֵ֖י (and those suckling) שָׁדָ֑יִם (the breasts);

יֵצֵ֤א (let go out) חָתָן֙ (the bridegroom) מֵֽחֶדְר֔וֹ (from his chamber),

וְכַלָּ֖ה (and the bride) מֵחֻפָּתָֽהּ׃ (from her chamber).

17  בֵּ֤ין (Between) הָאוּלָם֙ (the porch) וְלַמִּזְבֵּ֔חַ (and the altar),

יִבְכּוּ֙ (let weep) הַכֹּ֣הֲנִ֔ים (the priests), מְשָׁרְתֵ֖י (those ministering to) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH),

וְֽיֹאמְר֞וּ (and let them say), ח֧וּסָה (Have pity) יְהוָ֣ה (O YHWH), עַל־ (on) עַמֶּ֗ךָ (Your people),

וְאַל־ (and do not) תִּתֵּ֨ן (give) נַחֲלָתְךָ֤ (Your heritage) לְחֶרְפָּה֙ (to reproach),

לִמְשָׁל־ (for the ruling) בָּ֣ם (over them) גּוֹיִ֔ם (by the nations)

לָ֚מָּה (Why) יֹאמְר֣וּ (should they say) בָֽעַמִּ֔ים (among the peoples),

אַיֵּ֖ה (Where is) אֱלֹהֵיהֶֽם׃ (their God)?

Restoration Promised

18  וַיְקַנֵּ֥א (And will be jealous) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) לְאַרְצ֑וֹ (for His land),

וַיַּחְמֹ֖ל (and He will have pity) עַל־ (on) עַמּֽוֹ׃ (His people).

19  וַיַּ֨עַן (And will answer) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and say) לְעַמּ֗וֹ (to His people),

הִנְנִ֨י (Behold, I) שֹׁלֵ֤חַ (am sending) לָכֶם֙ (to you⁺) אֶת־ (-)

הַדָּגָן֙ (the grain), וְהַתִּיר֣וֹשׁ (and the new wine), וְהַיִּצְהָ֔ר (and the oil),

וּשְׂבַעְתֶּ֖ם (and you⁺ will be satisfied) אֹת֑וֹ (with them);

וְלֹא־ (and not) אֶתֵּ֨ן (will I give) אֶתְכֶ֥ם (you⁺) ע֛וֹד (any longer)

חֶרְפָּ֖ה (to reproach) בַּגּוֹיִֽם׃ (among the nations).

20  וְֽאֶת־ (And) הַצְּפוֹנִ֞י (the northern) אַרְחִ֣יק (I will put far away) מֵעֲלֵיכֶ֗ם (from you⁺)

וְהִדַּחְתִּיו֮ (and I will drive him away) אֶל־ (into) אֶ֣רֶץ (a land) צִיָּ֣ה (of dryness) וּשְׁמָמָה֒ (and desolation),

אֶת־ (with) פָּנָ֗יו (his face) אֶל־ (toward) הַיָּם֙ (the Sea), הַקַּדְמֹנִ֔י (Eastern)

וְסֹפ֖וֹ (and his back) אֶל־ (toward) הַיָּ֣ם (the sea), הָאַֽחֲר֑וֹן (western)

וְעָלָ֣ה (and will come up), בָאְשׁ֗וֹ (his stench)

וְתַ֙עַל֙ (and will rise up), צַחֲנָת֔וֹ (his smell)

כִּ֥י (for) הִגְדִּ֖יל (He has been great) לַעֲשֽׂוֹת׃ (in doing).

21  אַל־ (Not), תִּֽירְאִ֖י (should you fear) אֲדָמָ֑ה (O land);

גִּ֣ילִי (be glad) וּשְׂמָ֔חִי (and rejoice),

כִּֽי־ (for) הִגְדִּ֥יל (has been great) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) לַעֲשֽׂוֹת׃ (in doing).

22  אַל־ (Not) תִּֽירְאוּ֙ (should you⁺ be afraid) בַּהֲמ֣וֹת (O beasts) שָׂדַ֔י (of the field);

כִּ֥י (for) דָשְׁא֖וּ (have sprouted), נְא֣וֹת (the pastures) מִדְבָּ֑ר (of the wilderness)

כִּֽי־ (for) עֵץ֙ (the tree) נָשָׂ֣א (has borne) פִרְי֔וֹ (its fruit),

תְּאֵנָ֥ה (the fig tree) וָגֶ֖פֶן (and the vine) נָתְנ֥וּ (give forth) חֵילָֽם׃ (their strength).

23  וּבְנֵ֣י (And you sons) צִיּ֗וֹן (of Zion),

גִּ֤ילוּ (rejoice) וְשִׂמְחוּ֙ (and be glad) בַּיהוָ֣ה (in YHWH) אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ God);

כִּֽי־ (for) נָתַ֥ן (He gives) לָכֶ֛ם (to you⁺) אֶת־ (-) הַמּוֹרֶ֖ה (the early rain)

לִצְדָקָ֑ה (for vindication),

וַיּ֣וֹרֶד (and He brings down) לָכֶ֗ם (for you⁺) גֶּ֛שֶׁם (the rain),

מוֹרֶ֥ה (the early rain), וּמַלְק֖וֹשׁ (and the latter rain) בָּרִאשֽׁוֹן׃ (as it was at the first).

24  וּמָלְא֥וּ (And will be full) הַגֳּרָנ֖וֹת (the threshing floors) בָּ֑ר (of wheat),

וְהֵשִׁ֥יקוּ (and will overflow) הַיְקָבִ֖ים (the wine vats) תִּיר֥וֹשׁ (with new wine) וְיִצְהָֽר׃ (and oil).

25  וְשִׁלַּמְתִּ֤י (And I will restore) לָכֶם֙ (to you⁺) אֶת־ (-) הַשָּׁנִ֔ים (the years) אֲשֶׁר֙ (that) אָכַ֣ל (have eaten),

הָֽאַרְבֶּ֔ה (the swarming locust) הַיֶּ֖לֶק (the young locust),

וְהֶחָסִ֣יל (and the destroying locust), וְהַגָּזָ֑ם (and the devouring locust),

חֵילִי֙ (My army) הַגָּד֔וֹל (great) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) שִׁלַּ֖חְתִּי (I have sent) בָּכֶֽם׃ (among you⁺).

26  וַאֲכַלְתֶּ֤ם (And eating) אָכוֹל֙ (you⁺ will eat)

וְשָׂב֔וֹעַ (and be satisfied),

וְהִלַּלְתֶּ֗ם (and you⁺ will praise) אֶת־ (-) שֵׁ֤ם (the name) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH) אֱלֹ֣הֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ God),

אֲשֶׁר־ (who) עָשָׂ֥ה (has worked) עִמָּכֶ֖ם (over you⁺) לְהַפְלִ֑יא (to do wonders)

וְלֹא־ (and not) יֵבֹ֥שׁוּ (will be put to shame) עַמִּ֖י (My people)

לְעוֹלָֽם׃ (forever).

27  וִידַעְתֶּ֗ם (And you⁺ will know) כִּ֣י (that) בְקֶ֤רֶב (in the midst) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel), אָ֔נִי (I am)

וַאֲנִ֛י (and that I am) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֖ם (your⁺ God),

וְאֵ֣ין (and there is not) ע֑וֹד (any other);

וְלֹא־ (and not) יֵבֹ֥שׁוּ (will be put to shame). עַמִּ֖י (My people)

לְעוֹלָֽם׃ס (forever).

I Will Pour Out My Spirit
(Acts 2:14–36)

28  וְהָיָ֣ה (And it will come to pass) אַֽחֲרֵי־ (after) כֵ֗ן (this), אֶשְׁפּ֤וֹךְ (that I will pour out) אֶת־ (-) רוּחִי֙ (My Spirit) עַל־ (on) כָּל־ (all) בָּשָׂ֔ר (flesh);

וְנִבְּא֖וּ (and will prophesy), בְּנֵיכֶ֣ם (your⁺ sons) וּבְנֽוֹתֵיכֶ֑ם (and your⁺ daughters)

זִקְנֵיכֶם֙ (your⁺ old men) חֲלֹמ֣וֹת (dreams) יַחֲלֹמ֔וּן (will dream),

בַּח֣וּרֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ young men) חֶזְיֹנ֖וֹת (visions) יִרְאֽוּ׃ (will see).

29  וְגַ֥ם (And even) עַל־ (on) הָֽעֲבָדִ֖ים (the menservants) וְעַל־ (and on) הַשְּׁפָח֑וֹת (the maidservants)

בַּיָּמִ֣ים (in the days) הָהֵ֔מָּה (those) אֶשְׁפּ֖וֹךְ (will I pour out) אֶת־ (-) רוּחִֽי׃ (My Spirit).

30  וְנָֽתַתִּי֙ (And I will give) מֽוֹפְתִ֔ים (wonders) בַּשָּׁמַ֖יִם (in the heavens) וּבָאָ֑רֶץ (and on the earth),

דָּ֣ם (blood), וָאֵ֔שׁ (and fire), וְתִֽימֲר֖וֹת (and columns) עָשָֽׁן׃ (of smoke).

31  הַשֶּׁ֙מֶשׁ֙ (The sun) יֵהָפֵ֣ךְ (will be turned) לְחֹ֔שֶׁךְ (to darkness),

וְהַיָּרֵ֖חַ (and the moon) לְדָ֑ם (to blood),

לִפְנֵ֗י (before) בּ֚וֹא (the coming of). י֣וֹם (The day) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) הַגָּד֖וֹל (of the great) וְהַנּוֹרָֽא׃ (and awesome).

32  וְהָיָ֗ה (And it will come to pass), כֹּ֧ל (that everyone) אֲשֶׁר־ (who) יִקְרָ֛א (calls) בְּשֵׁ֥ם (on the name) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH)

יִמָּלֵ֑ט (will be saved);

כִּ֠י (for) בְּהַר־ (on Mount) צִיּ֨וֹן (Zion) וּבִירוּשָׁלִַ֜ם (and in Jerusalem)

תִּֽהְיֶ֣ה (there will be) פְלֵיטָ֗ה (escape), כַּֽאֲשֶׁר֙ (according to that which) אָמַ֣ר (has said), יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH)

וּבַ֨שְּׂרִידִ֔ים (and among those remaining) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (whom) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) קֹרֵֽא׃ (is calling).
