The Beginning
(Genesis 1:1–2; Hebrews 11:1–3)
1 Ἐν (In) ἀρχῇ (the beginning) ἦν (was) ὁ (the) Λόγος (Word), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) Λόγος (Word) ἦν (was) πρὸς (with) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God), καὶ (and) Θεὸς (God) ἦν (was) ὁ (the) Λόγος (Word).
2 Οὗτος (This One) ἦν (was) ἐν (in) ἀρχῇ (the beginning) πρὸς (with) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God).
3 πάντα (All things) δι’ (through) αὐτοῦ (Him) ἐγένετο (came into being), καὶ (and) χωρὶς (without) αὐτοῦ (Him) ἐγένετο (came into being) οὐδὲ (not even) ἕν (one thing) ὃ (that) γέγονεν (has come into being).
4 ἐν (In) αὐτῷ (Him) ζωὴ (life) ἦν (was), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ζωὴ (life) ἦν (was) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (of men).
5 καὶ (And) τὸ (the) φῶς (Light) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σκοτίᾳ (darkness) φαίνει (shines), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) σκοτία (darkness) αὐτὸ (it) οὐ (not) κατέλαβεν (overcame).
The Witness of John
6 Ἐγένετο (There was) ἄνθρωπος (a man), ἀπεσταλμένος (sent) παρὰ (from) Θεοῦ (God), ὄνομα (the name) αὐτῷ (to Him) Ἰωάννης (was John)·
7 οὗτος (This one) ἦλθεν (came) εἰς (for) μαρτυρίαν (testimony), ἵνα (so that) μαρτυρήσῃ (he might testify) περὶ (concerning) τοῦ (the) φωτός (Light), ἵνα (so that) πάντες (all) πιστεύσωσιν (might believe) δι’ (through) αὐτοῦ (him).
8 οὐκ (Not) ἦν (was) ἐκεῖνος (that one) τὸ (the) φῶς (Light), ἀλλ’ (but) ἵνα (that) μαρτυρήσῃ (he might testify) περὶ (concerning) τοῦ (the) φωτός (Light).
9 Ἦν (Was) τὸ (the) φῶς (Light) τὸ (-) ἀληθινὸν (true), ὃ (who) φωτίζει (enlightens) πάντα (every) ἄνθρωπον (man), ἐρχόμενον (coming) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world).
10 ἐν (In) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world) ἦν (He was), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) δι’ (through) αὐτοῦ (Him) ἐγένετο (came into being), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) αὐτὸν (Him) οὐκ (not) ἔγνω (knew).
11 εἰς (To) τὰ (the) ἴδια (own) ἦλθεν (He came), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) ἴδιοι (own) αὐτὸν (Him) οὐ (not) παρέλαβον (received).
12 ὅσοι (As many as) δὲ (however) ἔλαβον (received) αὐτόν (Him), ἔδωκεν (He gave) αὐτοῖς (to them) ἐξουσίαν (authority) τέκνα (children) Θεοῦ (of God) γενέσθαι (to become), τοῖς (to those) πιστεύουσιν (believing) εἰς (in) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) αὐτοῦ (of Him),
13 οἳ (who) οὐκ (not) ἐξ (of) αἱμάτων (blood) οὐδὲ (nor) ἐκ (of) θελήματος (will) σαρκὸς (of flesh) οὐδὲ (nor) ἐκ (of) θελήματος (will) ἀνδρὸς (of man) ἀλλ’ (but) ἐκ (of) Θεοῦ (God) ἐγεννήθησαν (were born).

14 Καὶ (And) ὁ (the) Λόγος (Word) σὰρξ (flesh) ἐγένετο (became) καὶ (and) ἐσκήνωσεν (tabernacled) ἐν (among) ἡμῖν (us), καὶ (and) ἐθεασάμεθα (we saw) τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) αὐτοῦ (of Him), δόξαν (glory) ὡς (as) μονογενοῦς (of the only begotten) παρὰ (from) Πατρός (the Father), πλήρης (full) χάριτος (of grace) καὶ (and) ἀληθείας (truth).
15 Ἰωάννης (John) μαρτυρεῖ (testifies) περὶ (concerning) αὐτοῦ (Him) καὶ (and) κέκραγεν (he has cried out) λέγων (saying)· Οὗτος (This) ἦν (was He) ὃν (of whom) εἶπον (I said)· Ὁ (The One) ὀπίσω (after) μου (me) ἐρχόμενος (coming) ἔμπροσθέν (precedence) μου (over me) γέγονεν (has), ὅτι (because) πρῶτός (before) μου (me) ἦν (He was).
16 Ὅτι (For) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) πληρώματος (fullness) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἡμεῖς (we) πάντες (all) ἐλάβομεν (received), καὶ (also) χάριν (grace) ἀντὶ (upon) χάριτος (grace)·
17 ὅτι (For) ὁ (the) νόμος (law) διὰ (through) Μωϋσέως (Moses) ἐδόθη (was given), ἡ (-) χάρις (grace) καὶ (and) ἡ (-) ἀλήθεια (truth) διὰ (through) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ) ἐγένετο (came).
18 Θεὸν (God) οὐδεὶς (no one) ἑώρακεν (has seen) πώποτε (ever yet)· μονογενὴς (the only begotten) Θεὸς (God) ὁ (the One) ὢν (being) εἰς (in) τὸν (the) κόλπον (bosom) τοῦ (of the) Πατρὸς (Father), ἐκεῖνος (He) ἐξηγήσατο (has made Him known).

19 Καὶ (And) αὕτη (this) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) μαρτυρία (testimony) τοῦ (-) Ἰωάννου (of John) ὅτε (when) ἀπέστειλαν (sent) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (him) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews) ἐξ (of) Ἱεροσολύμων (Jerusalem) ἱερεῖς (priests) καὶ (and) Λευίτας (Levites) ἵνα (so that) ἐρωτήσωσιν (they might ask) αὐτόν (him)· Σὺ (You) τίς (who) εἶ (are)?
20 καὶ (And) ὡμολόγησεν (he confessed) καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἠρνήσατο (denied), καὶ (but) ὡμολόγησεν (confessed) ὅτι (-) Ἐγὼ (I) οὐκ (not) εἰμὶ (am) ὁ (the) Χριστός (Christ).
21 Καὶ (And) ἠρώτησαν (they asked) αὐτόν (him)· Τί (What) οὖν (then)? σὺ (You) Ἠλίας (Elijah) εἶ (are)?
Καὶ (And) λέγει (he says)· Οὐκ (Not) εἰμί (I am).
Ὁ (The) προφήτης (Prophet) εἶ (are) σύ (you)?
Καὶ (And) ἀπεκρίθη (he answered)· Οὔ (No).
22 Εἶπαν (They said) οὖν (therefore) αὐτῷ (to him)· Τίς (Who) εἶ (are you)? ἵνα (So that) ἀπόκρισιν (an answer) δῶμεν (we might give) τοῖς (to those) πέμψασιν (having sent) ἡμᾶς (us)· τί (what) λέγεις (do you say) περὶ (about) σεαυτοῦ (yourself)?
23 Ἔφη (He was saying)· Ἐγὼ (I am) φωνὴ (a voice) βοῶντος (crying) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἐρήμῳ (wilderness)· Εὐθύνατε (Make straight) τὴν (the) ὁδὸν (way) Κυρίου (of the Lord), καθὼς (just as) εἶπεν (said) Ἠσαΐας (Isaiah) ὁ (the) προφήτης (prophet).
24 Καὶ (And) ἀπεσταλμένοι (ones having been sent) ἦσαν (were) ἐκ (from) τῶν (the) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees).
25 καὶ (And) ἠρώτησαν (they asked) αὐτὸν (him) καὶ (and) εἶπαν (said) αὐτῷ (to him)· Τί (Why) οὖν (then) βαπτίζεις (do you baptize) εἰ (if) σὺ (you) οὐκ (not) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) Χριστὸς (Christ) οὐδὲ (nor) Ἠλίας (Elijah) οὐδὲ (nor) ὁ (the) προφήτης (Prophet)?
26 Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) αὐτοῖς (them) ὁ (-) Ἰωάννης (John) λέγων (saying)· Ἐγὼ (I) βαπτίζω (baptize) ἐν (in) ὕδατι (water)· μέσος (but in the midst) ὑμῶν (of you⁺) ἕστηκεν (stands One) ὃν (whom) ὑμεῖς (you⁺) οὐκ (not) οἴδατε (know),
27 ὁ (the One) ὀπίσω (after) μου (me) ἐρχόμενος (coming), οὗ (of whom) οὐκ (not) εἰμὶ (am) ἐγὼ (I) ἄξιος (worthy) ἵνα (that) λύσω (I should loose) αὐτοῦ (of Him) τὸν (the) ἱμάντα (strap) τοῦ (of the) ὑποδήματος (sandal).
28 Ταῦτα (These things) ἐν (in) Βηθανίᾳ (Bethany) ἐγένετο (came to pass) πέραν (beyond) τοῦ (the) Ἰορδάνου (Jordan), ὅπου (where) ἦν (was) ὁ (-) Ἰωάννης (John) βαπτίζων (baptizing).
Jesus the Lamb of God

29 Τῇ (On the) ἐπαύριον (next day) βλέπει (he sees) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) ἐρχόμενον (coming) πρὸς (to) αὐτόν (him), καὶ (and) λέγει (says)· Ἴδε (Behold) ὁ (the) Ἀμνὸς (Lamb) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ὁ (the One) αἴρων (taking away) τὴν (the) ἁμαρτίαν (sin) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world).
30 οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is the One) ὑπὲρ (concerning) οὗ (whom) ἐγὼ (I) εἶπον (said)· Ὀπίσω (After) μου (me) ἔρχεται (comes) ἀνὴρ (a man) ὃς (who) ἔμπροσθέν (precedence) μου (over me) γέγονεν (has), ὅτι (because) πρῶτός (before) μου (me) ἦν (He was).
31 κἀγὼ (And I) οὐκ (not) ᾔδειν (knew) αὐτόν (Him), ἀλλ’ (but) ἵνα (so that) φανερωθῇ (He might be revealed) τῷ (-) Ἰσραὴλ (to Israel), διὰ (because of) τοῦτο (this) ἦλθον (came) ἐγὼ (I) ἐν (in) ὕδατι (water) βαπτίζων (baptizing).
32 Καὶ (And) ἐμαρτύρησεν (testified) Ἰωάννης (John) λέγων (saying) ὅτι (-) Τεθέαμαι (I have seen) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) καταβαῖνον (descending) ὡς (as) περιστερὰν (a dove) ἐξ (out of) οὐρανοῦ (heaven), καὶ (and) ἔμεινεν (it remained) ἐπ’ (upon) αὐτόν (Him).
33 κἀγὼ (And I) οὐκ (not) ᾔδειν (knew) αὐτόν (Him), ἀλλ’ (but) ὁ (the One) πέμψας (having sent) με (me) βαπτίζειν (to baptize) ἐν (in) ὕδατι (water) ἐκεῖνός (He) μοι (to me) εἶπεν (said)· Ἐφ’ (Upon) ὃν (whom) ἂν (-) ἴδῃς (you shall see) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) καταβαῖνον (descending) καὶ (and) μένον (remaining) ἐπ’ (upon) αὐτόν (Him), οὗτός (this) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the One) βαπτίζων (baptizing) ἐν (in) Πνεύματι (the Spirit) Ἁγίῳ (Holy).
34 κἀγὼ (And I) ἑώρακα (have seen), καὶ (and) μεμαρτύρηκα (have testified) ὅτι (that) οὗτός (this) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

35 Τῇ (On the) ἐπαύριον (next day) πάλιν (again) εἱστήκει (was standing) ὁ (-) Ἰωάννης (John) καὶ (and) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) μαθητῶν (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of him) δύο (two),
36 καὶ (And) ἐμβλέψας (having looked at) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) περιπατοῦντι (walking) λέγει (he says)· Ἴδε (Behold) ὁ (the) Ἀμνὸς (Lamb) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).
37 καὶ (And) ἤκουσαν (heard) οἱ (the) δύο (two) μαθηταὶ (disciples) αὐτοῦ (him) λαλοῦντος (speaking) καὶ (and) ἠκολούθησαν (followed) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus).
38 Στραφεὶς (Having turned) δὲ (then) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) καὶ (and) θεασάμενος (having seen) αὐτοὺς (them) ἀκολουθοῦντας (following) λέγει (He says) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Τί (What) ζητεῖτε (do you⁺ seek)?
Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπαν (they said) αὐτῷ (to Him)· Ῥαββί (Rabbi), ὃ (which) λέγεται (is to say) μεθερμηνευόμενον (being translated) Διδάσκαλε (Teacher)—Ποῦ (where) μένεις (are You staying)?
39 Λέγει (He says) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Ἔρχεσθε (Come) καὶ (and) ὄψεσθε (you⁺ will see). ἦλθαν (They went) οὖν (therefore) καὶ (and) εἶδαν (saw) ποῦ (where) μένει (He is staying), καὶ (and) παρ’ (with) αὐτῷ (Him) ἔμειναν (they stayed) τὴν (the) ἡμέραν (day) ἐκείνην (that)· ὥρα (The hour) ἦν (was) ὡς (about) δεκάτη (the tenth).

41 εὑρίσκει (Finds) οὗτος (he) πρῶτον (first) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) τὸν (-) ἴδιον (own) Σίμωνα (Simon) καὶ (and) λέγει (he says) αὐτῷ (to him)· Εὑρήκαμεν (We have found) τὸν (the) Μεσσίαν (Messiah) ὅ (which) ἐστιν (is) μεθερμηνευόμενον (being translated) Χριστός (Christ).
42 ἤγαγεν (He led) αὐτὸν (him) πρὸς (to) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus). ἐμβλέψας (Having looked at) αὐτῷ (him) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said)· Σὺ (You) εἶ (are) Σίμων (Simon) ὁ (the) υἱὸς (son) Ἰωάννου (of John), σὺ (You) κληθήσῃ (will be called) Κηφᾶς (Cephas) ὃ (which) ἑρμηνεύεται (is interpreted) Πέτρος (Peter).

43 Τῇ (On the) ἐπαύριον (next day) ἠθέλησεν (He willed) ἐξελθεῖν (to go out) εἰς (into) τὴν (-) Γαλιλαίαν (Galilee). καὶ (And) εὑρίσκει (He finds) Φίλιππον (Philip). καὶ (and) λέγει (says) αὐτῷ (to him) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus)· Ἀκολούθει (Follow) μοι (Me).
44 ἦν (Was) δὲ (now) ὁ (-) Φίλιππος (Philip) ἀπὸ (from) Βηθσαϊδά (Bethsaida), ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) πόλεως (city) Ἀνδρέου (of Andrew) καὶ (and) Πέτρου (Peter).
45 Εὑρίσκει (Finds) Φίλιππος (Philip) τὸν (-) Ναθαναὴλ (Nathanael) καὶ (and) λέγει (says) αὐτῷ (to him)· Ὃν (Him whom) ἔγραψεν (wrote of) Μωϋσῆς (Moses) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) νόμῳ (Law) καὶ (also) οἱ (the) προφῆται (prophets) εὑρήκαμεν (we have found), Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) υἱὸν (the son) τοῦ (-) Ἰωσὴφ (of Joseph) τὸν (-) ἀπὸ (from) Ναζαρέτ (Nazareth).
46 Καὶ (And) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to him) Ναθαναήλ (Nathanael)· Ἐκ (Out of) Ναζαρὲτ (Nazareth) δύναταί (is able) τι (any) ἀγαθὸν (good thing) εἶναι (to be)?

47 Εἶδεν (Saw) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) τὸν (-) Ναθαναὴλ (Nathanael) ἐρχόμενον (coming) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (Him) καὶ (and) λέγει (He says) περὶ (about) αὐτοῦ (him)· Ἴδε (Behold) ἀληθῶς (truly) Ἰσραηλίτης (an Israelite), ἐν (in) ᾧ (whom) δόλος (deceit) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (there is).
48 Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to Him) Ναθαναήλ (Nathanael)· Πόθεν (From where) με (me) γινώσκεις (do You know)?

49 Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) αὐτῷ (Him) Ναθαναήλ (Nathanael)· Ῥαββί (Rabbi), σὺ (You) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), σὺ (You) Βασιλεὺς (King) εἶ (are) τοῦ (-) Ἰσραήλ (of Israel).
50 Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to him)· Ὅτι (Because) εἶπόν (I said) σοι (to you) ὅτι (that) εἶδόν (I saw) σε (you) ὑποκάτω (under) τῆς (the) συκῆς (fig tree), πιστεύεις (do you believe)? μείζω (Greater things) τούτων (than these) ὄψῃ (You will see).
51 καὶ (And) λέγει (He says) αὐτῷ (to him)· Ἀμὴν (Truly) ἀμὴν (truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you⁺), ὄψεσθε (you⁺ will see) τὸν (the) οὐρανὸν (heaven) ἀνεῳγότα (opened) καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) ἀγγέλους (angels) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἀναβαίνοντας (ascending) καὶ (and) καταβαίνοντας (descending) ἐπὶ (on) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man).
