Mark 9

The Transfiguration
(Matthew 17:1–13; Luke 9:28–36; 2 Peter 1:16–21)

1  Καὶ (And) ἔλεγεν (He was saying) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you⁺) ὅτι (that) εἰσίν (there are) τινες (some) ὧδε (here) τῶν (of those) ἑστηκότων (standing) οἵτινες (who) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) γεύσωνται (shall taste) θανάτου (of death) ἕως (until) ἂν (-) ἴδωσιν (they shall see) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐληλυθυῖαν (having come) ἐν (in) δυνάμει (power).

2  Καὶ (And) μετὰ (after) ἡμέρας (days) ἓξ (six) παραλαμβάνει (takes along) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) τὸν (-) Πέτρον (Peter) καὶ (and) τὸν (-) Ἰάκωβον (James) καὶ (and) τὸν (-) Ἰωάννην (John), καὶ (and) ἀναφέρει (He brings up) αὐτοὺς (them) εἰς (onto) ὄρος (a mountain) ὑψηλὸν (high) κατ’ (by) ἰδίαν (themselves) μόνους (alone). καὶ (And) μετεμορφώθη (He was transfigured) ἔμπροσθεν (before) αὐτῶν (them), 3  καὶ (and) τὰ (the) ἱμάτια (garments) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐγένετο (became) στίλβοντα (shining) λευκὰ (white) λίαν (exceedingly), οἷα (such as) γναφεὺς (a launderer) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth) οὐ (not) δύναται (is able) οὕτως (thus) λευκᾶναι (to whiten them). 4  καὶ (And) ὤφθη (there appeared) αὐτοῖς (to them) Ἠλίας (Elijah) σὺν (with) Μωϋσεῖ (Moses), καὶ (and) ἦσαν (they were) συλλαλοῦντες (talking with) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus).

5  Καὶ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) (-) Πέτρος (Peter) λέγει (says) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (to Jesus)· Ῥαββί (Rabbi), καλόν (good) ἐστιν (it is) ἡμᾶς (for us) ὧδε (here) εἶναι (to be), καὶ (And) ποιήσωμεν (let us make) τρεῖς (three) σκηνάς (tabernacles), σοὶ (for You) μίαν (one) καὶ (and) Μωϋσεῖ (for Moses) μίαν (one) καὶ (and) Ἠλίᾳ (for Elijah) μίαν (one). 6  οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) ᾔδει (he knew) τί (what) ἀποκριθῇ (he should answer)· ἔκφοβοι (terrified) γὰρ (for) ἐγένοντο (they were).

7  Καὶ (And) ἐγένετο (there was) νεφέλη (a cloud) ἐπισκιάζουσα (overshadowing) αὐτοῖς (them), καὶ (and) ἐγένετο (there was) φωνὴ (a voice) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) νεφέλης (cloud)· Οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) (the) Υἱός (Son) μου (of Me) (the) ἀγαπητός (Beloved), ἀκούετε (listen you⁺) αὐτοῦ (to Him). 8  καὶ (And) ἐξάπινα (suddenly) περιβλεψάμενοι (having looked around) οὐκέτι (longer) οὐδένα (no) εἶδον (did they see anyone) ἀλλὰ (but) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) μόνον (alone) μεθ’ (with) ἑαυτῶν (themselves). meth’ heautōn

9  Καὶ (And) καταβαινόντων (in the coming down) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) ὄρους (mountain) διεστείλατο (He instructed) αὐτοῖς (them) ἵνα (that) μηδενὶ (to no one) (what) εἶδον (they saw) διηγήσωνται (they should relate), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ὅταν (when) (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead) ἀναστῇ (should rise). 10  καὶ (And) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) ἐκράτησαν (they kept) πρὸς (to) ἑαυτοὺς (themselves) συζητοῦντες (discussing) τί (what) ἐστιν (it is) τὸ (-) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead) ἀναστῆναι (to rise). 11  καὶ (And) ἐπηρώτων (they were questioning) αὐτὸν (Him) λέγοντες (saying) Ὅτι (-)· Λέγουσιν (Say) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes) ὅτι (that) Ἠλίαν (for Elijah) δεῖ (it is necessary) ἐλθεῖν (to come) πρῶτον (first)?

12  (-) δὲ (And) ἔφη (He was saying) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Ἠλίας (Elijah) μὲν (indeed) ἐλθὼν (having come) πρῶτον (first) ἀποκαθιστάνει (restores) πάντα (all things)· καὶ (and) πῶς (how) γέγραπται (has it been written) ἐπὶ (about) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man), ἵνα (that) πολλὰ (many things) πάθῃ (He should suffer) καὶ (and) ἐξουδενηθῇ (be set at nothing)? 13  ἀλλὰ (But) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you⁺) ὅτι (that) καὶ (also) Ἠλίας (Elijah) ἐλήλυθεν (has come), καὶ (and) ἐποίησαν (they did) αὐτῷ (to him) ὅσα (whatever) ἤθελον (they were wanting), καθὼς (as) γέγραπται (it has been written) ἐπ’ (of) αὐτόν (him).

The Boy with an Evil Spirit
(Matthew 17:14–18; Luke 9:37–42)

14  Καὶ (And) ἐλθόντες (having come) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) μαθητὰς (disciples) εἶδον (they saw) ὄχλον (a crowd) πολὺν (great) περὶ (around) αὐτοὺς (them) καὶ (and) γραμματεῖς (scribes) συζητοῦντας (disputing) πρὸς (with) αὐτούς (them). 15  καὶ (And) εὐθὺς (immediately) πᾶς (all) (the) ὄχλος (crowd) ἰδόντες (having seen) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐξεθαμβήθησαν (were greatly amazed), καὶ (and) προστρέχοντες (running to Him) ἠσπάζοντο (they were greeting) αὐτόν (Him).

16  Καὶ (And) ἐπηρώτησεν (He questioned) αὐτούς (them)· Τί (What) συζητεῖτε (are you⁺ disputing) πρὸς (with) αὑτούς (them)?

17  Καὶ (And) ἀπεκρίθη (answered) αὐτῷ (Him) εἷς (one) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) ὄχλου (crowd)· Διδάσκαλε (Teacher), ἤνεγκα (I brought) τὸν (the) υἱόν (son) μου (of me) πρὸς (to) σέ (You), ἔχοντα (having) πνεῦμα (a spirit) ἄλαλον (mute)· 18  καὶ (and) ὅπου (wherever) ἐὰν (if) αὐτὸν (him) καταλάβῃ (it might seize), ῥήσσει (it throws down) αὐτόν (him), καὶ (and) ἀφρίζει (he foams) καὶ (and) τρίζει (gnashes) τοὺς (-) ὀδόντας (his teeth) καὶ (and) ξηραίνεται (is withering away)· καὶ (And) εἶπα (I spoke) τοῖς (to the) μαθηταῖς (disciples) σου (of You) ἵνα (that) αὐτὸ (it) ἐκβάλωσιν (they might cast out), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἴσχυσαν (they had strength).

19  (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) αὐτοῖς (them) λέγει (He says)· (O) γενεὰ (generation) ἄπιστος (unbelieving), ἕως (until) πότε (when) πρὸς (with) ὑμᾶς (you⁺) ἔσομαι (will I be)? ἕως (Until) πότε (when) ἀνέξομαι (will I bear with) ὑμῶν (you⁺)? φέρετε (Bring) αὐτὸν (him) πρός (to) με (Me).

20  Καὶ (And) ἤνεγκαν (they brought) αὐτὸν (him) πρὸς (to) αὐτόν (Him). καὶ (and) ἰδὼν (having seen) αὐτὸν (Him) τὸ (the) πνεῦμα (spirit) εὐθὺς (immediately) συνεσπάραξεν (threw into convulsions) αὐτόν (him), καὶ (and) πεσὼν (having fallen) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) γῆς (ground) ἐκυλίετο (he was rolling around) ἀφρίζων (foaming).

21  Καὶ (And) ἐπηρώτησεν (He questioned) τὸν (the) πατέρα (father) αὐτοῦ (of him)· Πόσος (How long) χρόνος (a time) ἐστὶν (is it) ὡς (that) τοῦτο (this) γέγονεν (has been) αὐτῷ (with him)?

(-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (he said)· Ἐκ (From) παιδιόθεν (childhood)· 22  καὶ (And) πολλάκις (often) καὶ (also) εἰς (into) πῦρ (the fire) αὐτὸν (him) ἔβαλεν (it cast) καὶ (and) εἰς (into) ὕδατα (the waters) ἵνα (so that) ἀπολέσῃ (it might destroy) αὐτόν (him)· ἀλλ’ (But) εἴ (if) τι (anything) δύνῃ (You are able to do), βοήθησον (help) ἡμῖν (us) σπλαγχνισθεὶς (having compassion) ἐφ’ (on) ἡμᾶς (us).

23  (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to him)· Τὸ (-) Εἰ (If) δύνῃ (You are able), πάντα (All things) δυνατὰ (are possible) τῷ (to the one) πιστεύοντι (believing).

24  Εὐθὺς (Immediately) κράξας (having cried out) (the) πατὴρ (father) τοῦ (of the) παιδίου (child) ἔλεγεν (was saying)· Πιστεύω (I believe)· βοήθει (help) μου (of me) τῇ (the) ἀπιστίᾳ (unbelief).

25  Ἰδὼν (Having seen) δὲ (now) (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ὅτι (that) ἐπισυντρέχει (is running together) ὄχλος (a crowd), ἐπετίμησεν (He rebuked) τῷ (the) πνεύματι (spirit) τῷ (-) ἀκαθάρτῳ (unclean) λέγων (saying) αὐτῷ (to it)· Τὸ (-) ἄλαλον (Mute) καὶ (and) κωφὸν (deaf) πνεῦμα (spirit), ἐγὼ (I) ἐπιτάσσω (command) σοι (you), ἔξελθε (come) ἐξ (out of) αὐτοῦ (him) καὶ (and) μηκέτι (no more) εἰσέλθῃς (may you enter) εἰς (into) αὐτόν (him).

26  Καὶ (And) κράξας (having cried out) καὶ (and) πολλὰ (many) σπαράξας (having thrown him into convulsions) ἐξῆλθεν (it came out)· καὶ (and) ἐγένετο (he became) ὡσεὶ (as if) νεκρὸς (dead), ὥστε (so as for) τοὺς (-) πολλοὺς (many) λέγειν (to say) ὅτι (that) ἀπέθανεν (he was dead). 27  (-) δὲ (But) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) κρατήσας (having taken) τῆς (by the) χειρὸς (hand) αὐτοῦ (him) ἤγειρεν (raised up) αὐτόν (him), καὶ (and) ἀνέστη (he arose).

28  Καὶ (And) εἰσελθόντος (on having entered) αὐτοῦ (He) εἰς (into) οἶκον (the house) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him) κατ’ (by) ἰδίαν (Himself) ἐπηρώτων (were questioning) αὐτόν (Him)· Ὅτι (Why) ἡμεῖς (we) οὐκ (not) ἠδυνήθημεν (were able) ἐκβαλεῖν (to cast out) αὐτό (it)?

29  Καὶ (And) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Τοῦτο (This) τὸ (-) γένος (kind) ἐν (by) οὐδενὶ (nothing) δύναται (is able) ἐξελθεῖν (to come out) εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ἐν (by) προσευχῇ (prayer).

The Second Prediction of the Passion
(Matthew 17:22–23; Luke 9:43–45)

30  Κἀκεῖθεν (From there) ἐξελθόντες (having gone out) παρεπορεύοντο (they were passing) διὰ (through) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (Galilee), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἤθελεν (He wished) ἵνα (that) τις (anyone) γνοῖ (should know)· 31  ἐδίδασκεν (He was teaching) γὰρ (for) τοὺς (the) μαθητὰς (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) ἔλεγεν (He was saying) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὅτι (-) (The) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) παραδίδοται (is delivered) εἰς (into) χεῖρας (the hands) ἀνθρώπων (of men), καὶ (and) ἀποκτενοῦσιν (they will kill) αὐτόν (Him), καὶ (and) ἀποκτανθεὶς (having been killed) μετὰ (after) τρεῖς (three) ἡμέρας (days) ἀναστήσεται (He will rise). 32  οἱ (-) δὲ (But) ἠγνόουν (they were not understanding) τὸ (the) ῥῆμα (saying), καὶ (and) ἐφοβοῦντο (they were afraid) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐπερωτῆσαι (to question).

The Greatest in the Kingdom
(Matthew 18:1–5; Luke 9:46–50)

33  Καὶ (And) ἦλθον (they came) εἰς (to) Καφαρναούμ (Capernaum). Καὶ (And) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) οἰκίᾳ (house) γενόμενος (being) ἐπηρώτα (He was questioning) αὐτούς (them)· Τί (What) ἐν (on) τῇ (the) ὁδῷ (way) διελογίζεσθε (were you⁺ reasoning)? 34  οἱ (-) δὲ (But) ἐσιώπων (they were silent)· πρὸς (with) ἀλλήλους (one another) γὰρ (for) διελέχθησαν (they discussed) ἐν (on) τῇ (the) ὁδῷ (way) τίς (who was) μείζων (greater).

35  Καὶ (And) καθίσας (having sat down) ἐφώνησεν (He called) τοὺς (the) δώδεκα (Twelve) καὶ (and) λέγει (He says) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Εἴ (If) τις (anyone) θέλει (wants) πρῶτος (first) εἶναι (to be), ἔσται (he will be) πάντων (of all) ἔσχατος (last) καὶ (and) πάντων (of all) διάκονος (servant).

36  Καὶ (And) λαβὼν (having taken) παιδίον (a little child) ἔστησεν (He set) αὐτὸ (him) ἐν (in) μέσῳ (the midst) αὐτῶν (of them), καὶ (and) ἐναγκαλισάμενος (having taken in His arms) αὐτὸ (him) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them)· 37  Ὃς (Whoever) ἂν (-) ἓν (one) τῶν (-) τοιούτων (of such) παιδίων (little children) δέξηται (shall receive) ἐπὶ (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματί (name) μου (of Me), ἐμὲ (Me) δέχεται (receives)· καὶ (and) ὃς (whoever) ἂν (-) ἐμὲ (Me) δέχηται (shall receive), οὐκ (not) ἐμὲ (Me) δέχεται (receives) ἀλλὰ (but) τὸν (the One) ἀποστείλαντά (having sent) με (Me).

49  Πᾶς (Everyone) γὰρ (for) πυρὶ (with fire) ἁλισθήσεται (will be salted).
