Mark 8

The Feeding of the Four Thousand
(2 Kings 4:42–44; Matthew 15:29–39)

1  Ἐν (In) ἐκείναις (those) ταῖς (-) ἡμέραις (days) πάλιν (again) πολλοῦ (great) ὄχλου (the crowd) ὄντος (being) καὶ (and) μὴ (not) ἐχόντων (having) τί (what) φάγωσιν (they might eat), προσκαλεσάμενος (having summoned) τοὺς (the) μαθητὰς (disciples) λέγει (He says) αὐτοῖς (to them)· 2  Σπλαγχνίζομαι (I have compassion) ἐπὶ (toward) τὸν (the) ὄχλον (crowd), ὅτι (because) ἤδη (already) ἡμέραι (days) τρεῖς (three) προσμένουσίν (they continue) μοι (with Me) καὶ (and) οὐκ (nothing) ἔχουσιν (have) τί (that) φάγωσιν (they might eat)· 3  καὶ (And) ἐὰν (if) ἀπολύσω (I shall dismiss) αὐτοὺς (them) νήστεις (hungry) εἰς (to) οἶκον (the house) αὐτῶν (of them), ἐκλυθήσονται (they will faint) ἐν (on) τῇ (the) ὁδῷ (way)· καί (And) τινες (some) αὐτῶν (of them) ἀπὸ (from) μακρόθεν (afar) ἥκασιν (have come).

4  Καὶ (And) ἀπεκρίθησαν (answered) αὐτῷ (Him) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ὅτι (-) Πόθεν (From where) τούτους (these) δυνήσεταί (will be able) τις (anyone) ὧδε (here) χορτάσαι (to satisfy) ἄρτων (with loaves) ἐπ’ (in) ἐρημίας (a wilderness)?

5  Καὶ (And) ἠρώτα (He was asking) αὐτούς (them)· Πόσους (How many) ἔχετε (do you⁺ have) ἄρτους (loaves)?

Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπαν (they said)· Ἑπτά (Seven).

6  Καὶ (And) παραγγέλλει (He commands) τῷ (the) ὄχλῳ (crowd) ἀναπεσεῖν (to recline) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) γῆς (ground)· καὶ (And) λαβὼν (having taken) τοὺς (the) ἑπτὰ (seven) ἄρτους (loaves) εὐχαριστήσας (having given thanks) ἔκλασεν (He broke them) καὶ (and) ἐδίδου (was giving them) τοῖς (to) μαθηταῖς (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἵνα (so that) παρατιθῶσιν (they might set them before them), καὶ (And) παρέθηκαν (they set them before) τῷ (the) ὄχλῳ (crowd). 7  καὶ (And) εἶχον (they had) ἰχθύδια (small fish) ὀλίγα (a few)· καὶ (And) εὐλογήσας (having blessed) αὐτὰ (them) εἶπεν (He said) καὶ (also) ταῦτα (these) παρατιθέναι (to set before them).

8  Καὶ (And) ἔφαγον (they ate) καὶ (and) ἐχορτάσθησαν (were satisfied), καὶ (And) ἦραν (they took up) περισσεύματα (over and above) κλασμάτων (of fragments) ἑπτὰ (seven) σπυρίδας (baskets). 9  ἦσαν (There were) δὲ (now) ὡς (about) τετρακισχίλιοι (four thousand men).

καὶ (And) ἀπέλυσεν (He dismissed) αὐτούς (them). 10  Καὶ (And) εὐθὺς (immediately) ἐμβὰς (having entered) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πλοῖον (boat) μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) μαθητῶν (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἦλθεν (He went) εἰς (to) τὰ (the) μέρη (parts) Δαλμανουθά (of Dalmanutha).

11  Καὶ (And) ἐξῆλθον (came out) οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) καὶ (and) ἤρξαντο (began) συζητεῖν (to dispute with) αὐτῷ (Him), ζητοῦντες (seeking) παρ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (Him) σημεῖον (a sign) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (-) οὐρανοῦ (heaven), πειράζοντες (testing) αὐτόν (Him).

12  Καὶ (And) ἀναστενάξας (having sighed deeply) τῷ (in the) πνεύματι (spirit) αὐτοῦ (of Him) λέγει (He says)· Τί (Why) (the) γενεὰ (generation) αὕτη (this) ζητεῖ (seeks) σημεῖον (a sign)? ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you⁺), εἰ (if) δοθήσεται (there will be given) τῇ (to the) γενεᾷ (generation) ταύτῃ (this) σημεῖον (a sign). 13  καὶ (And) ἀφεὶς (having left) αὐτοὺς (them) πάλιν (again) ἐμβὰς (having embarked) ἀπῆλθεν (He went away) εἰς (to) τὸ (the) πέραν (other side).

14  Καὶ (And) ἐπελάθοντο (they forgot) λαβεῖν (to take) ἄρτους (loaves), καὶ (and) εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ἕνα (one) ἄρτον (loaf) οὐκ (not) εἶχον (they had) μεθ’ (with) ἑαυτῶν (them) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) πλοίῳ (boat). 15  καὶ (And) διεστέλλετο (He was instructing) αὐτοῖς (them) λέγων (saying)· Ὁρᾶτε (Watch), βλέπετε (take heed) ἀπὸ (of) τῆς (the) ζύμης (leaven) τῶν (of the) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees) καὶ (and) τῆς (of the) ζύμης (leaven) Ἡρῴδου (of Herod).

16  καὶ (And) διελογίζοντο (they were reasoning) πρὸς (with) ἀλλήλους (one another) ὅτι (because) ἄρτους (loaves) οὐκ (not) ἔχουσιν (they had).

17  Καὶ (And) γνοὺς (having known) λέγει (He says) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Τί (Why) διαλογίζεσθε (do you⁺ reason) ὅτι (that) ἄρτους (loaves) οὐκ (not) ἔχετε (you⁺ have)? οὔπω (Not yet) νοεῖτε (do you⁺ perceive) οὐδὲ (nor) συνίετε (do you⁺ understand)? πεπωρωμένην (Hardened) ἔχετε (do you⁺ have) τὴν (the) καρδίαν (heart) ὑμῶν (of you⁺)? 18  Ὀφθαλμοὺς (Eyes) ἔχοντες (having) οὐ (not) βλέπετε (do you⁺ see), καὶ (And) ὦτα (ears) ἔχοντες (having) οὐκ (not) ἀκούετε (do you⁺ hear)? καὶ (And) οὐ (not) μνημονεύετε (do you⁺ remember), 19  ὅτε (When) τοὺς (the) πέντε (five) ἄρτους (loaves) ἔκλασα (I broke) εἰς (for) τοὺς (the) πεντακισχιλίους (five thousand), πόσους (how many) κοφίνους (hand-baskets) κλασμάτων (of fragments) πλήρεις (full) ἤρατε (did you⁺ take up)?

Λέγουσιν (They say) αὐτῷ (to Him)· Δώδεκα (Twelve).

20  Ὅτε (When) καὶ (also) τοὺς (the) ἑπτὰ (seven) εἰς (were for) τοὺς (the) τετρακισχιλίους (four thousand), πόσων (of how many) σπυρίδων (baskets) πληρώματα (full) κλασμάτων (of fragments) ἤρατε (did you⁺ take up)?

Καὶ (And) λέγουσιν (said) αὐτῷ (they)· Ἑπτά (Seven).

21  Καὶ (And) ἔλεγεν (He was saying) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Οὔπω (Not yet) συνίετε (do you⁺ understand)?

The Blind Man at Bethsaida

22  Καὶ (And) ἔρχονται (they come) εἰς (to) Βηθσαϊδάν (Bethsaida). Καὶ (And) φέρουσιν (they bring) αὐτῷ (to Him) τυφλὸν (a blind man), καὶ (and) παρακαλοῦσιν (implore) αὐτὸν (Him) ἵνα (that) αὐτοῦ (him) ἅψηται (He might touch). 23  καὶ (And) ἐπιλαβόμενος (having taken hold of) τῆς (the) χειρὸς (hand) τοῦ (of the) τυφλοῦ (blind man) ἐξήνεγκεν (He led forth) αὐτὸν (him) ἔξω (outside) τῆς (of the) κώμης (village), καὶ (and) πτύσας (having spit) εἰς (upon) τὰ (the) ὄμματα (eyes) αὐτοῦ (of him), ἐπιθεὶς (having laid) τὰς (the) χεῖρας (hands) αὐτῷ (upon him), ἐπηρώτα (He was asking) αὐτόν (him) Εἴ (if) τι (anything) βλέπεις (you see)?

24  Καὶ (And) ἀναβλέψας (having looked up) ἔλεγεν (he was saying)· Βλέπω (I see) τοὺς (the) ἀνθρώπους (men), ὅτι (because) ὡς (as) δένδρα (trees) ὁρῶ (I see them) περιπατοῦντας (walking).

25  Εἶτα (Then) πάλιν (again) ἐπέθηκεν (He laid) τὰς (the) χεῖρας (hands) ἐπὶ (upon) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) διέβλεψεν (he opened his eyes) καὶ (and) ἀπεκατέστη (he was restored), καὶ (and) ἐνέβλεπεν (he was seeing) τηλαυγῶς (clearly) ἅπαντα (everything). 26  καὶ (And) ἀπέστειλεν (He sent) αὐτὸν (him) εἰς (to) οἶκον (the house) αὐτοῦ (of him) λέγων (saying)· Μηδὲ (Not) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) κώμην (village) εἰσέλθῃς (enter).

29  Καὶ (And) αὐτὸς (He) ἐπηρώτα (was questioning) αὐτούς (them)· Ὑμεῖς (You⁺) δὲ (however) τίνα (who) με (I) λέγετε (do you⁺ say) εἶναι (am)?

Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) (-) Πέτρος (Peter) λέγει (says) αὐτῷ (to Him)· Σὺ (You) εἶ (are) (the) Χριστός (Christ).

30  Καὶ (And) ἐπετίμησεν (He warned) αὐτοῖς (them) ἵνα (that) μηδενὶ (no one) λέγωσιν (they should tell) περὶ (concerning) αὐτοῦ (Him).

33  (-) δὲ (But) ἐπιστραφεὶς (having turned) καὶ (and) ἰδὼν (having seen) τοὺς (the) μαθητὰς (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐπετίμησεν (He rebuked) Πέτρῳ (Peter) καὶ (and) λέγει (He says)· Ὕπαγε (Get) ὀπίσω (behind) μου (Me), Σατανᾶ (Satan), ὅτι (because) οὐ (not) φρονεῖς (you have in mind) τὰ (the) τοῦ (things) Θεοῦ (of God) ἀλλὰ (but) τὰ (the) τῶν (things) ἀνθρώπων (of men).
