The Tradition of the Elders
(Matthew 15:1–9)
1 Καὶ (And) συνάγονται (are gathered together) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (Him) οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) καί (and) τινες (some) τῶν (of the) γραμματέων (scribes) ἐλθόντες (having come) ἀπὸ (from) Ἱεροσολύμων (Jerusalem).
2 καὶ (And) ἰδόντες (they had seen) τινὰς (some) τῶν (of the) μαθητῶν (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ὅτι (that) κοιναῖς (with defiled) χερσίν (hands), τοῦτ’ (that) ἔστιν (is) ἀνίπτοις (unwashed), ἐσθίουσιν (they are eating) τοὺς (the) ἄρτους (loaves),—
3 Οἱ (-) γὰρ (For) Φαρισαῖοι (the Pharisees) καὶ (and) πάντες (all) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews) ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) πυγμῇ (to the fist) νίψωνται (they wash) τὰς (the) χεῖρας (hands) οὐκ (not) ἐσθίουσιν (eat), κρατοῦντες (holding to) τὴν (the) παράδοσιν (tradition) τῶν (of the) πρεσβυτέρων (elders),
4 καὶ (and) ἀπ’ (coming from) ἀγορᾶς (the marketplace) ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) βαπτίσωνται (they immerse) οὐκ (not) ἐσθίουσιν (they eat), καὶ (and) ἄλλα (other things) πολλά (many) ἐστιν (there are) ἃ (that) παρέλαβον (they received) κρατεῖν (to hold to), βαπτισμοὺς (immersions) ποτηρίων (of cups) καὶ (and) ξεστῶν (pitchers) καὶ (and) χαλκίων (bronze vessels) καὶ (and) κλινῶν (couches),—
5 Καὶ (And) ἐπερωτῶσιν (questioned) αὐτὸν (Him) οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes)· Διὰ (Because of) τί (why) οὐ (not) περιπατοῦσιν (walk) οἱ (the) μαθηταί (disciples) σου (of You) κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) παράδοσιν (tradition) τῶν (of the) πρεσβυτέρων (elders), ἀλλὰ (but) κοιναῖς (with defiled) χερσὶν (hands) ἐσθίουσιν (eat) τὸν (the) ἄρτον (bread)?
6 Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Καλῶς (correctly) ἐπροφήτευσεν (prophesied) Ἠσαΐας (Isaiah) περὶ (about) ὑμῶν (you⁺) τῶν (-) ὑποκριτῶν (hypocrites), ὡς (as) γέγραπται (it has been written) ὅτι (-)
Οὗτος (This) ὁ (-) λαὸς (people) τοῖς (with the) χείλεσίν (lips) με (Me) τιμᾷ (honors),
Ἡ (-) δὲ (but) καρδία (the heart) αὐτῶν (of them) πόρρω (far away) ἀπέχει (is kept) ἀπ’ (from) ἐμοῦ (Me)·
7 Μάτην (In vain) δὲ (now) σέβονταί (they worship) με (Me),
Διδάσκοντες (teaching) διδασκαλίας (as teachings) ἐντάλματα (the precepts) ἀνθρώπων (of men)·
8 Ἀφέντες (Having left) τὴν (the) ἐντολὴν (commandment) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) κρατεῖτε (you⁺ hold to) τὴν (the) παράδοσιν (tradition) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (of men).
9 Καὶ (And) ἔλεγεν (He was saying) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Καλῶς (Nobly) ἀθετεῖτε (do you⁺ set aside) τὴν (the) ἐντολὴν (commandment) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἵνα (so that) τὴν (the) παράδοσιν (tradition) ὑμῶν (of you⁺) τηρήσητε (you⁺ might keep).
10 Μωϋσῆς (Moses) γὰρ (for) εἶπεν (said)· Τίμα (Honor) τὸν (the) πατέρα (father) σου (of you) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) μητέρα (mother) σου (of you), καί (and)· Ὁ (The one) κακολογῶν (speaking evil of) πατέρα (father) ἢ (or) μητέρα (mother) θανάτῳ (in death) τελευτάτω (let him end).
11 ὑμεῖς (You⁺) δὲ (however) λέγετε (say that) Ἐὰν (if) εἴπῃ (might say) ἄνθρωπος (a man) τῷ (to the) πατρὶ (father) ἢ (or) τῇ (to the) μητρί (mother)· Κορβᾶν (is Corban), ὅ (that) ἐστιν (is) Δῶρον (a gift), Ὃ (whatever) ἐὰν (if) ἐξ (from) ἐμοῦ (me) ὠφεληθῇς (you might be profited),
12 οὐκέτι (no longer) ἀφίετε (do you⁺ permit) αὐτὸν (him) οὐδὲν (anything) ποιῆσαι (to do) τῷ (for the) πατρὶ (father) ἢ (or) τῇ (for the) μητρί (mother),
13 ἀκυροῦντες (making void) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) τῇ (for the) παραδόσει (tradition) ὑμῶν (of you⁺) ᾗ (which) παρεδώκατε (you⁺ delivered)· καὶ (And) παρόμοια (as) τοιαῦτα (such) πολλὰ (many) ποιεῖτε (you⁺ do).
What Defiles a Man
(Matthew 15:10–20)
14 Καὶ (And) προσκαλεσάμενος (having summoned) πάλιν (again) τὸν (the) ὄχλον (crowd) ἔλεγεν (He was saying) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Ἀκούσατέ (Hear) μου (Me) πάντες (all) καὶ (and) σύνετε (understand).
15 οὐδέν (Nothing) ἐστιν (there is) ἔξωθεν (from outside) τοῦ (the) ἀνθρώπου (man) εἰσπορευόμενον (entering) εἰς (into) αὐτὸν (him) ὃ (that) δύναται (is able) κοινῶσαι (to defile) αὐτόν (him)· ἀλλὰ (but) τὰ (the things) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) ἀνθρώπου (man) ἐκπορευόμενά (proceeding) ἐστιν (are) τὰ (the things) κοινοῦντα (defiling) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man).
17 Καὶ (And) ὅτε (when) εἰσῆλθεν (He entered) εἰς (into) οἶκον (the house) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) ὄχλου (crowd), ἐπηρώτων (were questioning) αὐτὸν (Him) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him) τὴν (about the) παραβολήν (parable).
18 Καὶ (And) λέγει (He says) αὐτοῖς (to them)· Οὕτως (Thus) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you⁺) ἀσύνετοί (without understanding) ἐστε (are)? οὐ (Not) νοεῖτε (understand you⁺) ὅτι (that) πᾶν (everything) τὸ (-) ἔξωθεν (from outside) εἰσπορευόμενον (entering) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man) οὐ (not) δύναται (is able) αὐτὸν (him) κοινῶσαι (to defile),
19 ὅτι (because) οὐκ (not) εἰσπορεύεται (it enters) αὐτοῦ (of him) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) καρδίαν (heart) ἀλλ’ (but) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) κοιλίαν (belly), καὶ (and) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) ἀφεδρῶνα (sewer) ἐκπορεύεται (goes out), καθαρίζων (thus purifying) πάντα (all) τὰ (the) βρώματα (food)?
20 Ἔλεγεν (He was saying) δὲ (now) ὅτι (-) Τὸ (That which) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) ἀνθρώπου (man) ἐκπορευόμενον (is proceeding), ἐκεῖνο (that) κοινοῖ (defiles) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man).
21 ἔσωθεν (From within) γὰρ (for) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) καρδίας (heart) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (of men) οἱ (-) διαλογισμοὶ (reasonings) οἱ (-) κακοὶ (evil) ἐκπορεύονται (proceed), πορνεῖαι (sexual immorality), κλοπαί (thefts), φόνοι (murders), μοιχεῖαι (adulteries),
22 πλεονεξίαι (covetous desires), πονηρίαι (wickednesses), δόλος (deceit), ἀσέλγεια (sensuality), ὀφθαλμὸς (an eye) πονηρός (evil), βλασφημία (slander), ὑπερηφανία (pride), ἀφροσύνη (foolishness)·
23 πάντα (All) ταῦτα (these) τὰ (-) πονηρὰ (evils) ἔσωθεν (from within) ἐκπορεύεται (proceed) καὶ (and) κοινοῖ (they defile) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man).

(Matthew 15:21–28)
24 Ἐκεῖθεν (From there) δὲ (also) ἀναστὰς (having risen up) ἀπῆλθεν (He went away) εἰς (into) τὰ (the) ὅρια (borders) Τύρου (of Tyre). Καὶ (And) εἰσελθὼν (having entered) εἰς (into) οἰκίαν (a house) οὐδένα (no one) ἤθελεν (He was wanting) γνῶναι (to know it), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἠδυνήθη (He was able) λαθεῖν (to be hidden)·
25 ἀλλ’ (But) εὐθὺς (immediately) ἀκούσασα (having heard) γυνὴ (a woman) περὶ (about) αὐτοῦ (Him), ἧς (of whom) εἶχεν (had) τὸ (the) θυγάτριον (little daughter) αὐτῆς (of her) πνεῦμα (a spirit) ἀκάθαρτον (unclean), ἐλθοῦσα (having come) προσέπεσεν (fell) πρὸς (at) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) αὐτοῦ (of Him)·
26 ἡ (-) δὲ (Now) γυνὴ (the woman) ἦν (was) Ἑλληνίς (a Greek), Συροφοινίκισσα (Syrophoenician) τῷ (by) γένει (race)· καὶ (and) ἠρώτα (she was asking) αὐτὸν (Him) ἵνα (that) τὸ (the) δαιμόνιον (demon) ἐκβάλῃ (He might cast) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) θυγατρὸς (daughter) αὐτῆς (of her).
27 Καὶ (And) ἔλεγεν (He was saying) αὐτῇ (to her)· Ἄφες (Permit) πρῶτον (first) χορτασθῆναι (to be satisfied) τὰ (the) τέκνα (children)· οὐ (not) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (it is) καλόν (good) λαβεῖν (to take) τὸν (the) ἄρτον (bread) τῶν (of the) τέκνων (children) καὶ (and) τοῖς (to the) κυναρίοις (dogs) βαλεῖν (to cast it).
28 Ἡ (-) δὲ (But) ἀπεκρίθη (she answered) καὶ (and) λέγει (she says) αὐτῷ (to Him)· Ναί (Yes), Κύριε (Lord)· καὶ (even) τὰ (the) κυνάρια (dogs) ὑποκάτω (under) τῆς (the) τραπέζης (table) ἐσθίουσιν (eat) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) ψιχίων (crumbs) τῶν (of the) παιδίων (children).
29 Καὶ (And) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτῇ (to her)· Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτον (this) τὸν (-) λόγον (word) ὕπαγε (go), ἐξελήλυθεν (has gone forth) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) θυγατρός (daughter) σου (of you) τὸ (the) δαιμόνιον (demon).
30 καὶ (And) ἀπελθοῦσα (having gone away) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) οἶκον (house) αὐτῆς (of her) εὗρεν (she found) τὸ (the) παιδίον (child) βεβλημένον (laid) ἐπὶ (on) τὴν (the) κλίνην (bed) καὶ (and) τὸ (the) δαιμόνιον (demon) ἐξεληλυθός (having gone out).

31 Καὶ (And) πάλιν (again) ἐξελθὼν (having gone out) ἐκ (from) τῶν (the) ὁρίων (borders) Τύρου (of Tyre) ἦλθεν (He went) διὰ (through) Σιδῶνος (Sidon) εἰς (to) τὴν (the) θάλασσαν (Sea) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (of Galilee) ἀνὰ (through) μέσον (the midst) τῶν (of the) ὁρίων (borders) Δεκαπόλεως (of the Decapolis).
32 Καὶ (And) φέρουσιν (they bring) αὐτῷ (to Him) κωφὸν (a deaf man) καὶ (and) μογιλάλον (he spoke with difficulty), καὶ (and) παρακαλοῦσιν (they implore) αὐτὸν (Him) ἵνα (that) ἐπιθῇ (He might lay) αὐτῷ (on him) τὴν (the) χεῖρα (hand).
33 Καὶ (And) ἀπολαβόμενος (having taken away) αὐτὸν (him) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) ὄχλου (crowd) κατ’ (by) ἰδίαν (himself) ἔβαλεν (He put) τοὺς (the) δακτύλους (fingers) αὐτοῦ (of Him) εἰς (into) τὰ (the) ὦτα (ears) αὐτοῦ (of him) καὶ (and) πτύσας (having spit) ἥψατο (He touched) τῆς (the) γλώσσης (tongue) αὐτοῦ (of him),
34 καὶ (and) ἀναβλέψας (having looked up) εἰς (to) τὸν (-) οὐρανὸν (heaven) ἐστέναξεν (He sighed deeply), καὶ (and) λέγει (He says) αὐτῷ (to him)· Ἐφφαθά (Ephphatha), ὅ (that) ἐστιν (is)· Διανοίχθητι (Be opened).
35 Καὶ (And) εὐθὺς (immediately) ἠνοίγησαν (were opened) αὐτοῦ (his) αἱ (-) ἀκοαί (ears), καὶ (and) ἐλύθη (was loosed) ὁ (the) δεσμὸς (band) τῆς (of the) γλώσσης (tongue) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) ἐλάλει (he was speaking) ὀρθῶς (rightly).
36 Καὶ (And) διεστείλατο (He instructed) αὐτοῖς (them) ἵνα (that) μηδενὶ (no one) λέγωσιν (they should tell)· ὅσον (As much as) δὲ (however) αὐτοῖς (He) διεστέλλετο (was instructing), αὐτοὶ (them) μᾶλλον (more) περισσότερον (abundantly) ἐκήρυσσον (they were proclaiming it).
37 καὶ (And) ὑπερπερισσῶς (above measure) ἐξεπλήσσοντο (they were astonished) λέγοντες (saying)· Καλῶς (Well) πάντα (all things) πεποίηκεν (He has done), καὶ (both) τοὺς (the) κωφοὺς (deaf) ποιεῖ (He makes) ἀκούειν (to hear) καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) ἀλάλους (mute) λαλεῖν (to speak).
